Kevin was not at the restaurant the night we went and I think there were just a few loose strings. The silverware wasn't always there when we needed it. Open Table said we couldn't come at 7 when we wanted. We came at 6:30 and literally were the only people there. Kind of weird. Especially when only one other table came at 7. There are no adjectives in the entire Websters dictionary that can adequately describe the meal we had for my Birthday dinner Saturday night. I am in the hospitality business, travel and dine out frequently. Binkley's is as close to dining perfection as I have experienced in the US. Go hungry, and get the six course tasting and splurge to have the wine accompaniment. We lost track of how many actual servings of "amuse bouche" we had in between those courses, but my guess is 15. We always enjoy the 6 course tasting menu with wine pairing. That and the dozen or more amuse bouche! Incredibly knowledgeable wait staff. Little molecular gastronomic tricks without flaunting it. Food was outstanding and the little surprises between the courses made it a true dining experience. It is not cheap by any means, but a 'once in a while' special treat makes this a very valid option. Because it was Restaurant Week in Phoenix, the price for the fixed menu was considerably lower than the regular menu, but it was still higher than we are accustomed to. However, the food was superb, the little surprises between courses were fantastic, the service was impeccable, the wine list was extensive and we'll be going back (on special occasions, of course). Eating at Binkley's is a true adventure, and like nothing you've experienced in any other restaurant. Chef Kevin Binkley is a master of the culinary arts. We've eaten here at least 5 times and have not had a repeat of any item! If you love good food and want a real food experience, then you've got to try this place! Service should be mentioned separetly as it deserves special notice. The server (we've had her twice) is so passionate about her job (food, service, etc.) that she helps make the experience top-notch. I wish we remembered her name as we'd recommend her specifically.
Two unfortunate distractions: the temperature in the restaurant was way too high. I asked that it be turned down which helped but then it went back up again. The chef must have an A+ in chemistry because he uses that in every aspect. Take the 4 or 5 course tasting and you will get your courses all designed by you using menu items, you will also get close to 10 to 15 additional small tastings in between. Some are smoking, some lite up like disco balls, some fired up . Too many to describe, you must experience this drama of never knowing what you may get. The staff is well trained and knowledgeable about every dish and explain it in full. Romantic seating in the dining room area or patio. Nice bar, but very busy across from the bar with the food running. Not food, plenty of food, but I have been to other places where I had 1 bite and I still remember the taste years later. I was expecting the same thing. Lastly the main server was great, but not authentic. I got more care out of the other staff. The menu offers the option of 4, 5 or 6 course tasting dinners. In addition to these courses, each diner receives about a dozen or more additional tastes between the selected courses. All courses and tastes are small such that even less hardy eaters such as myself can finish them all. And they are all good! The food and presentation never fail to impress. This was our 4th or 5th time at the restaurant and for the first time service was not great. The bread person forgot to give bread to one of our party (there were 6 of us). One of the couples had ordered a bottle of wine and had to ask for more of it to be poured during our entree. Another person had asked for a cup of coffee at the beginning of the meal and had to repeat his request because our server had forgotten. Another person had requested another glass of wine and it took so long to bring it, she told another staff member to forget it. It seemed the staff was off their game.
