A word from Billy's Boston Chowder House
Billy’s Boston Chowder House is like so many seaside restaurants known by the locals as their favorite family seafood eatery. More than a clam shack or lobster pound but a full service seafood restaurant. The essence of great New England Chowder House is not about elegance, it is about quality ingredients simply prepared so the natural flavor of seafood and fresh vegetables take center stage. It’s about the love of the sea and respect for each ingredient and the role they play. Billy’s Boston Chowder House serves both old and new friends from Boston and the Bay Area who have hearty sea lover appetites in search for traditional Yankee faire.Continued

  • "Was excellent in every way. Would not recommend it a "quiet intimate" evening. Was lively & the food was fabulous. The sand dabs & lobster bisque was fabulous."

  • "The Manhattan and Boston clam chowdah were very good and the lobsta rolls were so good! Lots of hot lobster in the roll; so good. It wasn't very busy that night and Bill, the owner, came by and talked to all his guests."

  • "Limited seating- so open table is a good idea. Very charming place in Los Gatos. Food is really good and prices are fair."

  • "Good seafood dishes with relatively large portions. Solid choice in Los Gatos."

  • "The food had gone downhill since the last time (about a year ago) we went. We had the chowder sampler, the Manhattan tasted like tomato fish soup, the chowder tasted like thick salt water with clams and half cooked potato cubes, and the lobster bisque tasted like flour water with orange coloring (no lobster meat in sight). My husband had the fish and chips, the fish was covered in heavy batter that has no flavor. My lobster cioppino had a decent soup base, but the seafood (shrimps, clams, squids, mussels) were deeply frozen and you can still taste the freezer burn. I hate to say this but it seems the restaurant is now serving food court quality food. You call yourself a chowder house, at least at your chowder right!"

  • "Real Boston flavor - great service - great food - looking forward to coming back to try more of the menu. We stayed safe and just went with the Fish n Chips and WOW...."

  • "Very friendly staff crowd. Great seafood. Had an entertaining guitarist Fred McCarty when we were there to liven up the atmosphere."

  • "We had a great dinner at Billy's. Our server was absolutely wonderful, she was on the spot with everything! The New England chowder and steamed mussels were AMAZING. We also got the lobster roll and Captain's platter which were both great....but it was the chowder and mussels that will have us coming back for more!"

  • "Great food & great prices, just what LG needed! Loved the addition with the live music! Very fun. Marie, you are a great server!"

  • "After a fun, pleasant dinner here last week, we got to speaking with Billy about the music they have in the evenings. Unfortunately, we got there at 8:00 and the music was already over...I was told it only runs from 6-8. We were looking for a place to hang out 'til 10...still like the place though!"

  • "Warm eatery in town. Exactly as we had hoped, it was an authentic Boston corner bar/restaurant which it should be since it is run by a real Bawstonian. My wife and I both went to school in New England and two of our kids went to college in Boston so we know the real thing...and this is it!"

  • "Such fresh seafood and the best lobster roll! The crab sandwich is also delicious! Can't go wrong with great food so reasonably priced."

  • "We recently ate at Billy's looking for a casual but good seafood restaurant. It was disappointing. Their Christmas bisque ($25) was separated, the lobsta roll was okay but not much flavor, very small, and way more bread than lobster. All of the lobster was very chewy and not flavorful. The ceviche was like salsa mixed with frozen little shrimp. When I asked the server if different items were fresh, I got the same answer - no it comes from a bag. They were out of the first three beers we asked for and had to settle for one that was a disappointment. The server and host were very friendly. The atmosphere was open and casual. Unfortunately, the food was on par with Red Lobster - over-priced, not fresh, and lacking in flavor."

  • "Perfect spot for our belated Valentine dinner! The staff was very friendly and welcoming. My husband tried Grandma's Gravy and loved it. The pasta was cooked perfectly and the sauce and sausage were amazing .I had the 2lb crab dinner and enjoyed every bite. The chowda was perfect as well! Can't wait to visit and try the Cioppino with Lobsta! Definitely, make a reservation if you want to avoid the long line."

  • "Where do I begin? I think this might be the best meal that we had since moving from the east coast back in April. We started out with the Dungeness crab cakes and prawn cocktail. Both were very good. My wife had Boston Cioppino and I had Seafood Linguine. Both were Outstanding. The sauce was perfect. The flavors were amazing. You should Really mafe reservation on the weekend. We only had to wait about 10 minutes for our table. We have tried several seafood places in the south bay area and this is by far the best we been too. I can't wait to go back!"

  • "My favorite place for dinner. The chowder is fabulous and the lobster is to die for... This is my "go to" place for dinner or a special night out. The owner comes around to the table to see how you are doing and is very friendly. He chatted with us after our dinner and felt like a old friend. Can't wait to go back. Service was great too. It was Valentines Day and they were working hard. But that didn't stop them from giving excellent service. Every time I have been in has been a great experience and I tell all my friends."

  • "This is a very nice place. We really liked the "New England clam" and "lobsta bisque", didn't care so much for the Manhattan clam. Next time we will take a bowl of soup with bread as our main dish and skip the entrees. We all tried something different. The Cioppino was good, but the other dishes like the sole and the haddock lacked spices. Would go back for lunch instead of dinner."

  • "We go there fairly often because the food is consistently delicious and fresh. It's always worth noting places where the chef takes genuine pride in putting out the best quality dishes he can, so we have taken family and friends there with us several times. My only complaint would be that there were a couple of musicians who set up an amp in the corner and started playing/singing during the supper service. The dining room is too small and too loud for that. While they were playing and singing, it was impossible for us to carry on normal conversation at our table, and we were as far away from them as anyone could get. If that's going to be a new regular part of their evening meal time, I suggest going for lunch, instead."

  • "Very good and fresh seafood. Place is small for large group, but they made do for my party of 10. Had many TV's with the game on, so would be a great place to watch a game."

  • "This was our second visit and we drive over an hour to get there. They have gone to the trouble to create a gluten free area in their kitchen. My wife and one of my children have Celiac Disease and it is very difficult to find safe restaurants. My daughter loves the fried Calamari. The staff and owner are always very cheerful and helpful. We will be back again soon."

  • "Went for an early New Year's Eve dinner. Had to try the chowder and lobster-rolls -- was very good. Made me feel like I was in Maine. I recommend! Plan on a return soon to try oyster po'boy."

  • "We enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere. The crab sandwich could have been a bit more generous with the filling. Flavors were all good. Very good clam chowder."

  • "This was our second visit to Billy's, and yes, I will go back. However, one expects to be seated on time if a reservation was made, which it was, obviously through Open Table. Our wait was over 30 minutes. The server was apologetic and did make an adjustment on our bill, but with the crowd and noise and no where to sit, it was a long wait. Waiting outside was not an option as it was cold! But Billy's is good food, and given the time of year, I think we can understand the wait time. But if it happens again, we won't go back."

  • "Delicious cioppino with generous seafood portions and amazing broth, definitely worth getting! Oysters are fresh and briny, and our waitress was friendly and efficient. Cute interior with brick walls, christmas lights, chalkboard menu and a few flatscreens for those interested. Easy to make reservations on Opentable. I loved it so much, I'm going back twice in one week! Definitely recommend."

  • "Lobster Roll expensive ($18.90) but lobster tasted as though previously cooked and let stand. Real lobster flavor was absent. Raw oysters were good. Noise was near intolerable. Sam's Chowder House and Lou's Village lobster roll are MUCH better."

  • "We come back here for the Boston Clam Chowder. It is so good! My husband likes the Fish & Chips. It comes with fries and a coleslaw that is a little spicy. It is very good. Our waitress was very friendly and efficient. This is a great place if you are craving seafood."

  • "I arrived on time expecting to be seated right away. But had to wait for 15 min. What's the point of making a reservation if the table wasn't ready on time?"

  • "We tried Billy's chowder house for 1st time. We were pleasantly surprised that it was so good. The service was excellent despite a seemingly busy Sunday evening. We were celebrating 2 birthdays (one belated) and when Marie our server overheard this, she offered us choices of 2 desserts and coffee. The 2 musicians, Aly & Gretchen were delightful and added to our experience. We will definitely return."

  • "We have known about Billy's for a while and were excited to go for some fresh oysters, and the oysters were the only bright spot. For folks who really like fresh seafood - I would not recommend this place. I must admit the clam chowder was also very good. My husband's lobster roll was terrible, my shrimp and marinara with linguine was unremarkable, and my mother's red snapper was okay. Not what I was expecting. Our waitress was nice but she was very slow and inefficient. Won't be headed back anytime soon."

  • "What a find! We were meeting a friend for lunch and wanted to find some place new and different. I checked Trip Advisor and found that this place was rated the seventh best in Los Gatos! Yes, indeed! Can't wait to go back. The server was very friendly and not in the least intrusive. The owner could be friendlier, but he does a great job with the food. He needs to at the very least acknowledge his diners. But I can't wait to go back!"

  • "We've been here a couple of times for dinner on special occasions. The food is decent, nothing to write home about. The atmosphere is casual and a bit noisy, as there's one big room and it's kind of hollow and echoey. Seats are very close together, much like a cafateria. We've had shrimp cocktail, crab appetizers, baked sole, and scallops. Our biggest issue is the small portions and ridiculous prices. $24 for about 8 small scallops, and your choice of two sides. For that kind of money I expect to get either large portions, high-end atmosphere, or unbelievable food. Sad to say you get non of these. We actually went home and ate as we left the restaurant hungry! On the positive side, the staff is very friendly and eager to please."
