"We were not greeted by the "hostess with the most-ess". She was the hostess with the least-ess! She seemed bored & was unenthusiastic. She mumbled something when she seated us, then proceeded to completely ignore us. After what seemed like 10 minutes of no acknowledgement from any of the restaurant staff (not even water), we had to get up from our table and interrupt her, while she was watching the bar tv, and ask for our waiter. The waiter was great! He helped us even though he was off duty. (He should be commended for this). His name was John - big, friendly guy - he was awesome and got our order perfect. The food was very good - I will definitely return and recommend it to others. But I will warn them about a potential rude greeting."

"At our first visit, we were pleasantly surprised by the unusual mix of items on the menu (reference the calamari with fried lemon). Different, unique, and interesting. On this visit, this "different and unusual" caught us by surprise. First, the good: Starter of crab and artichoke was excellent. Not very stiff, as is usual, but still full of flavor, crab, and served not just with bread, but also sweet red pepper, chips, parboiled broccoli, carrots, etc. Excellent. Wife's blackened chicken in brown butter was excellent. My bbq pork tostada salad, however, was just OK. Mostly iceberg and watery, the pork was good, the toppings were too heavy. Strangely, the salad included kalmata olives, which were really out of place. Service great"

"This place has lost its edge. Food used to be innovative, side dishes tasty, some interesting and unique flavors. Food has become OK, side dishes (vegetables) overcooked and too much oil. I used to recommend Billy Berk's to friends. Now it is more of a risk."

"Fantastic food where casual attire is appropriate (servers were wearing Sharks t-shirts in light of Sharks game on Sat night). Menu is quire varied, both in terms of food selections and price range. The 4 of us all thought it was great. Will definitely go back again when in downtown SJ for theater."

"This was my third time to Billy Berks and the second time in which we have had bad service. We were seated for over 25 minutes and no one came to take our order.I went to the front desk and asked who was assigned to our table as we had not seen anybody. In a few minutes the waitress came by and asked for our order. No apology or acknowledgement that she had ignored us all that time. The service was slow the rest of the evening and we had to practically trip her to get her attention to get our bill. Great food but such obnoxious service will make me rethink coming back."
