Diner Reviews
  • "First time there and the food was terrific....service was great......and a real neighborhood gem...."

  • "It's a good restaurant. The food is USUALLY good and the service was very good considering how crowded it was."

  • "We were there on a Saturday evening - the place was REALLY loud, the service was terrible, but the food was good. Unfortunately, when you are in a super loud restaurant with a scowling waitress the good food does not have much of an opportunity to shine. If you have kids, it is worth mentioning that while they do have $13 pizzas, there is no children't menu."

  • "Food was excellent, décor was what you would expect in a pub style restaurant. Only complaint was our waiter wasn't very good. Couldn't get the order right, didn't know about the food was slow. Gave bread but no butter and I asked for butter on three occasions. FInally had to ask a different server to bring me butter."

  • "Bilbo Baggins is an excellent little restaurant a few blocks off Kimg Street in the Old Town section of Alexandria. The menu is varied and the food excellent. There is a huge drink menu, and a very nice list of personal specialty pizzas. I've been there twice. The only bad thing I will say is that the service on the second trip was lacking. The waitress made us feel rushed when there were very few people in the restaurant, and did not thank us when we paid. I think this is an aberration, and would not let it deter you from trying this nice gem."

  • "Although not a regular, we go here a couple of times a year. Both service and quality of food have declined. We had a 7:30 reservation on a Mon. night. Had to wait quit a few minutes before we were acknowledged and seated. Drinks were ordered quickly and served in reasonable amount of time. The salad was served at the same time as the entree, which seemed to take over 15 minutes. The salad was WAY overpriced, $13, for large leaves of greens and a lot of candied walnuts swimming in rasperry vinagrette. Needless to say, we will probably not be returning."

  • "We returned to Bilbo Baggins for a special occasion after a 25+ year hiatus. It was great years ago. We were seated in a tight corner booth in an empty area, while there were lights, nice tables and people in the front of the top floor. I had even made a reservation! The server was non-communicative and did not check on our table. Empty beer glasses, no bread (and when asked for some she seemed surprised and did not bring more when asked). Would not make eye contact. Specials looked good on the menu. We expected fresh. It was served SO fast, it was obvious that it was prepared ahead, including my swordfish which appeared to have been reheated and a bit tough. The prices for beer are high but good selections. Would only recommend bar."

  • "We went during happy hour on a weeknight. 1/2 price pizzas. It was great and our server was awesome. He even told us what NOT to get (as in, don't waste your time on that, it's not as good as other things and you can get it better somewhere else). That's service! The pizzas were great and to us FAST! It was a light crowd and we really enjoyed it. We initially went in b/c of the name (hubby is a LOTR fan) but would go back on its own merit!"

  • "I took my friend here for her birthday. We enjoyed a very nice casual dinner. She had good wine, I had great beer. The Bilbo Pizza was delicious; she enjoyed her cinnamon pork chop. Good, friendly, unobtrusive service."

  • "We found this restaurant online while searching for a Sunday brunch menu in Alexandria. The name itself was intriguing, and the menu items and descriptions looked and sounded very tasty and were also reasonably priced. The brunch atmosphere was a bit crowded and loud, but we were seated quickly. We did the online reservation, but I think we would have been fine without it. Our server was pleasant, but seemed a bit inattentive at times, although we got our food pretty quickly and everything tasted great! We would definitely go back and would recommend this restaurant to friends and family."

  • "From the outside it doesn't look like anything special. Inside looks like a typical pub with stools around tables, tv's playing the World Cup game, and a large bar area. Where it shines is the food. The veal scallopini and weiner schnitzel were great. The selection was diverse, something for everyone. The service was a tad slow and not real energetic. If you want some great food in a relaxed-casual atmosphere, Bilbo's is for you. If you are looking for a nice place to bring your honey for quiet, ambiance, & atmosphere, you might want to go somewhere else. It was what I was looking for that night."

  • "I brought my father for Father's Day dinner. We sat upstairs, which was neither crowded nor empty. The service was good. My father Enjoyed his dinner (swordfish). I got the vegetarian plate, which had a very nice collection of vegetables + polenta. The only problem was that some of the items, especially the spinach and mashed potatoes, were way too salty. The raisin bread that came before the meal seemed totally homemade, just like I used to make in my bread-making days - dense, chewy and delicious...apart from being somewhat salty. If the kitchen would back off on the salt (you can always add at the table, but you can't remove it), I would add a star to my review. We had an enjoyable evening, but I'm not sure I would go back."

  • "This was exactly what we were looking for on a family birthday dinner. The food was good, the menu varied and a great beer selection. The service was fairly quick, although our server didn't seem to be too familiar with the menu or the drinks, other than the daily special. A bonus was that it's on a side street that isn't too crowded and there is a parking lot across the street which on Saturday night was $5."

  • "I checked notable wine list, but only because there was not a notable beer list selection. Food was well prepared and presented. Good flavors. The selection was fairly wide and everyone in our party found something to their liking. Service was a little slow, but server had a lot of tables assigned. He was courteous and helpful. Had planned on trying this restaurant out for a long time, and will be back again."

  • "The food was good and the beer list was spectacular. The beer alone makes it a place I'll go back to many times."

  • "Interesting menu of well-prepared food (the wife had duck salad and I had wiener schnitzel), great selection of beer and wine (the happy hour pricing is on a limited but still good subset), reasonable prices, all in all a rather good restaurant. Just don't let the name fool you into thinking it's Tolkien-themed, if that's what you're going for. Even without that element, though, the ambiance was fine, with funny signs on the walls. If you have an out-of-the-way table it can be hard to get the wait-staff's attention, but once you do, they're great. Most of the tables for up to four are the high kind, which I personally don't like, but of course YMMV. Parking can be hard to find, but at least after 6 PM on-street is free."

  • "Good food, fun spot with Hobbit themed menu and decor. TVs around, small seating area downstairs but was fine for our party. Nice servers."

  • "I am glad we finally got to eat here. We were given a basket of raisin bread which was delicious. My husband had a salad and I had Gandolf's Pie. We enjoyed our food and beer. Definitely will go back. I wish they would have had a kid's menu. My son decided not to share my pizza and none of the appetizer appealed to him. The server asked if he would like a bowl of fruit and he ate it. We were really that the server was so helpful."

  • "I was Expecting more of a "hobbit" feel. This was more like a Diner with vines painted on the walls. Would have been much better it Much more greenery, Heavy utensils, metal plates...more of an Old english feel. Food was just OK I have the Veggie platter...quantity was good, quality...not so good, veggies over cooked, lacked spices. House Chardonnay, very sweet....my fault I should have looked/asked about the label. Web site is Great..the only reason we took the metro, 7 stops and a Taxi....If a visitor, go to main street is downtown Alexandria"

  • "Every dish we had--including the read--was too salty. "

  • "My wife and I both ordered dishes that sounded good on the menu, but lacked once at the table. The salmon was very thin, breaded, and a bit dried out. The sauce was also overwhelming. My wife had the pork loin - again, the meat was overcooked. We came in hopes of finding a new place to dine, but we won't be back again."

  • "I've dined at Bilbo's several times, and had happy hour excursions as well, and never been disappointed. All of their pizzas have been outstanding, and their seafood is also delicious, fresh, well-seasoned and expertly cooked. Extensive beer (and wine) list, and a decadent chocolate Belgian waffle for dessert, make it truly a memorable experience to share with friends and family alike."

  • "I found Bilbo Baggins on the Alexandria website and was not disappointed. Great food, exceptional beer list, and great service."

  • "The restaurant was not very crowded, hence not noisy at all. We found the menu extremely interesting and the service attentive. There were four in our party, and we all enjoyed our meals. The extraordinary selection of beers makes me think that this woudl be a pleasant, but potentially noisy place in the evening. Nevertheless, we would try it and we would return for lunch."

  • "Bilbo's was great the first time. We vowed to return with others. I was proud to share this place with my family for Mother's Day. We entered the restaurant and waited for our table- that was upstairs with a large slant in the floor, near the bathrooms, and segregated from the rest of diners. The next room had happy families with food, attentive staff, and nice scenery. We sat for 17 minutes with no water, bread, or notice from anyone until I went downstairs to complain. My beef was rare instead of well done like I asked, but I was afraid to return it. I should have left but we wanted to give the staff a chance to redeem the service. The place wasn't packed so what was the excuse? We even left a good tip for bad service. "

  • "Pleasantly surprised with Bilbo Baggins, we knew that the restaurant was known for it's Beer selection and Wine list but the food was absolutely stupendous. Witty phrases adorn the walls and murals maps and other paraphernalia from the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings. Our server was attentive and very personable but we never felt rushed at all. Another plus is that it is off the craziness that follows King Street, being on Queen it was a much more pleasant and easy going atmosphere than the hustle and bustle of King Street."

  • "I've been to Bilbo Baggins several times for dinner and they have a great beer selection and the food is usually good. However I went with my family for the Mother's Day brunch and it was quite a different experience. The service was very slow, the server kept disappearing for long periods of time, and one of our appetizer plates was dirty (food obviously stuck to it). I had the lobster bisque to start and it was basically lobster flavored pepper water. Not creamy and not substantial. I also had the pan-seared chicken with sausage gravy and eggs. Everything was over-salted and the portion was lacking. Maybe the staff was still sleepy or something. Anyway I'd say stick to dinner and go elsewhere for brunch."

  • "great for beer - an amazing selection of interesting brews both on draft and by bottle. Main meals were disappointing but staff and atmosphere was friendly"

  • "I was expecting a unique restaurant, good food, and an atmosphere that would allow for conversation, as I was having dinner with family I hadn't seen in many years. How utterly disappointing that we were seated in a crowded, noisy, and exceedingly warm bar (NOT a restaurant!!), we were shoved in an awkward table under a low ceiling with posts separating us. Unable to carry on a conversation for the noise. In addition, the waitress brought my second "soda water" in the original bottle, instead of pouring it into a glass. When I opened it, it sprayed all over us. Topping it off, our meal was bland and overcooked. I would NEVER recommend it unless you just want a typical, noisy bar experience and don't care about service or quality."

  • "We were seated in a very sub-par section of the restaurant way in the back even though we had reservations and all of the second floor was mostly empty. The beer menu and the Sam's garden pizza were a redeeming feature. The grilled seafood platter was adequate. However, the lobster bisque was so thinned out and highly over seasoned that it was hard to finish. We've tasted much better food and were seated in better ambiance for the amount of money that we spent at Bilbo's. Given the array of choices in Alexandria, we won't be back any time soon."

  • "Felt like Bilbo Baggins was a bit of a ghost of it's former self. The Lord of the Rings theme worked on the surface, but felt underwhelming for a fan looking for a really awesome LOTR experience. A little more Shire-like hospitality please! Food was delicious and the Bilbo Baggins ale is a must. Their happy gory deals are worth going for."

  • "The food was good, not truly remarkable, but adequate. Portion size was perfect, taste was ok. Service was very fast. Good came out barely 15 minutes after we ordered. Great beer list. Disappointed there were no Virginia wines on the wine list. Would go again to try some of the other selections."

  • "Bilbos is one of our "go to" restaurants in Old Town, especially since it is a few blocks from our house. The food is reliably good. If you're in the mood for a beer with your meal, I highly recommend getting off of the King Street strip and meandering over to Bilbo Baggins."

  • "Bilbo was always a neighborhood restaurant we could depend on for good-to-terrific food and a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. I hadn't been there in two years, but when an out-of-town friend had an evening free, I thought Bilbo would be the perfect place. I was wrong. The food is still great, but the service was spotty and intrusive and the facility felt grimy. The noise level was so high we had to raise voices to hear each other. The wait staff was either not to be found or constantly trying to clear, even though we told them twice to wait until we were both finished. Note: we ate downstairs in the restaurant (not in the bar, which looked good, but was full) or upstairs, which may still be just fine, but I won't go back soon to find out."

  • "Wish Open Table had a "Notable Beer List" on the options above. BB's beer list is incredible with gems that are hard to find. All three of our brunches were delicious. Service was friendly and prompt despite it being a very busy Easter lunch and after our meal we enjoyed savoring a second sample from the beer list without being rushed out. It's a rustic spot that I'm sure can be romantic if you don't have a screaming child behind you as we did, but that can happen anywhere. "
