I'd like to review the food, but we didn't make it that far. Friends recommended Bijou on a recent visit to Hayward when we wanted to take relatives out to a nice meal. We were immediately put off by the grungy entrance, unswept, dusty floors and dirty windows. I admit it was a busy holiday weekend. We were seated at a booth with plaster crumbling from the wall and a sticky table. This was not a place we wanted to entertain guests, especially for the prices on the menu. We left and wandered down the street to the microbrewery which seated us in a quiet patio area and served us a great meal. We expected more from Bijou. First impressions are important, and although the food at Bijou is supposed to be good, I wasn't willing to take the risk.

Most of the restaurant was rather dark. Behind my companion was a wall of bright colored bars of light. The noise level was high enough to make conversation a challenge. We expected French/Canadian food and looked forward to several items from the menu. Unfortunately these were not available on the prix fixe menu from our voucher. Champagne was mediocre. Bread with spicy chimichuri sauce?? My companion's chicken thighs were overcooked and dried out. She didn't finish it. My pork tenderloin was cooked properly, but again chimichuri sauce? Huh?? Bread pudding dessert was good.

Starters were good but rest of meal very disappointing. Meat was way over cook. Unable to eat my pork medallions. Left my entire meal except 2 bits. Very Rushed. In and out in 40 minutes. Would have liked to finished one plate before next came out. My husband had his spoon in a bowl of soup and was taking a bit as the waiter picked up his bowl to remove it. My husband grabbed the bowl and stated that he was still eating. Desert was vanilla ice cream with a drizzle of carmel and brownie dust (would have like a little of both). My husband's cream brulee was good.

I bought a $75 Groupon for four dinner meals from the fixed price menu with champagne. I cannot imagine at the Bijou that I would in the future actually paying the $236 for four people for the fixed price menu plus $36 for the four glasses of champagne. The champagne tasted like Asti Spumoni, the portions were too small, the pork tenderloin on the menu was actually overcooked really chewy pork loins. I enjoyed my chosen appetizer of scallops in puff pastry but, the pastry did not get puffed. My friends all said the dressing on their salads were great (raspberry vinaigrette) but, their just was not enough.

Food was good. We got the living social deal so the low price made it taste even better. Service and location was different story. First, AC was busted and we were sweating bullets the whole dinner. Next, servers, bar tender, hosts were very unprofessional. They were congregated in the bar area cracking jokes with each other and at one point even all took a shot together. Granted there were only a handful of patrons in the restaurant at the time but this was still not professional. Overall, food saved the day

I took my date here and we had a really wonderful time. The atmosphere and decor is great, the waitress was very friendly, and best of all was the food! It was upscale, beautifully presented, and delicious. We had the tuna tar tar, scallop pastry puff, pork chops with chimichurri and mashed potatoes, sole with couscous, topped off with double scoops of vanilla ice cream, caramel, and brownie bits for dessert. I would definitely come here again!

The food, food presentation and the restaurant decor were wonderful! I am surprised this place is in Hayward! We had the ahi tartar, duck salad, pork loin medallions with garlic potatoes, mango chicken with rice, bread pudding and ice cream with caramel. All were absolutely delicious and delivered in a timely fashion by the wait staff! The bar is well separated from the dining area and the sound was not intrusive to our dining conversation. Besides, the A's game was on one of the TVs and not the Giant's game was not on the other TV so I was not as interested in the bar area. All in all Bijou is a place I will be going back to for another welcomed dining experience.

We purchased a tasting menu from Bijou and were pretty happy with our food and the restaurant. The restaurant is clean, open with both indoor and outdoor seating. We had a tuna tartare appetizer - very tasty. Our sole entree was just OK - the presentation and seasoning were great, but the fish was a little tough. I had an ice cream sundae for desert and my wife had bread pudding. Both were awesome. Our tasting package included a glass of California Champagne - we enjoyed it. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. Bottom line is we will go back again.

I came in to Bijou after purchasing their Groupon deal. I've walked past the restaurant before and loved the decor, the scene and the warm atmosphere. I was especially thrilled to see how gorgeous their bar area was! I read the reviews both of Groupon, Yelp and on Open Table and couldn't wait to try them for myself. Coming in, the hostess asked for the Groupon voucher. I handed it to her and she walked us to our table, showing the Groupon menu and the regular menu. After looking at the regular menu, my party and I decided to go off of that instead of the Groupon deal. I figured I would be back and will use the voucher my second time. I ordered the Chilean Bass and I couldn't be any more happier with my choice!

The restaurant tries to be an upscale restaurant and sports bar at the same time. They do neither very well. The menu is limited. Food is ok, but overpriced. The service is fair. The noise level during sports events is overwhelming for those trying to experience a fine dining experience. The location is good but in a city that has been unsuccessfully trying to create a lively downtown for over 50 years.

Fancy upscale restaurant at first glance, but when you take a closer look - its just a guise, with mediocre service and way overpriced food, that is not that good. I ordered the chilean sea bass, risoto was too salty, and fish overdone - which is a shame, cause its such a delicious fish. My husband the recommended Chicken dish - the Costco rotissere chicken is better. The small plate mussles was the only saving grace, with really delicious broth. My dirty martini was served in a margarita glass! Service too slow, no one refilled waters. Spent over $100 for 2 adults - not worth the $, will not go again.

I purchased a groupon coupon that was suppose to be a fixed price dinner for 2 at a 68% discount off regular price. I paid $39 for the coupon. I purchased the coupon for the rib eye dinner it advertised including a picture of the entree. I came expecting the rib eye steak dinner with mashed potatoes and green beans as advertised. I was served a bowl of gravy with some beef chunks and french fries. The server saw the look on our faces and disappeared. Of course she did not ask how our meal was. I have dietary restrictions and cannot tolerate fried foods and heavy sauces or gravies. I could not eat my entree. Will never dine there again.

Upon arrival we noticed the interior was noisy and warm, one of the hottest days of the year, eventually we got used to the noise, after adjusting voice levels. The heat did not subside. Ther were four of us . Service was good and attentive (restaurant not very busy). Table was cleared of used items promptly. Spinach salad was good followed by salmon with rice and zuccini, also good. Crab salad and apraragus dish were consumed, as were two pizzas. Eating at Bijou was a good experience with people that have something to talk about. It was nice to get outside as the heat was not finding a way to. We will try Bijou again.

for my birthday, so that always helps. Myself, my daughter and her boyfriend went to The Bijou for Father's Day dinner. It was very quiet in my opinion, but then I don't know Hayward that well. As a result, the service was very attentive. Smiling faces. We ate a variety of selections from the menu since my daughter is vegetarian. Salad to steak. Every dish was very good. For the taste, ambiance, service and price I would eat at The Bijou again. And having just moved to Hayward, I likely will.

The appetizer selection was satisfactory, but the entree and dessert selection was a joke. I was given 3 poor choices for entree and for dessert. A chicken leg with a scoop of bland mashed potato, my partner ordered the beef rib with a scoop of mashed potato. My other entree choice was white taco fish. The 3 desserts had fancy names, and that was the best part. The quantity of beef or chicken could be on a children menu. I have visited this restaurant 4 times in the past with Groupon or Travelzoo vouchers and had positive experiences. I have a feeling that the restaurant needed to cut food cost and felt the customer wouldn't notice, sorry but i will not go back.

Took my sister here for her birthday! I had bought a living social deal. I had a tasty ahi tartar appetizer. The sauces on the side were very good. For main course I had braised beef ribs. The meat fell off the bone but majorly lacked in flavor. The garlic mashed potatoes were also very bland and flavorless! The chocolate ice cream was good, but hard to mess up store bought ice cream. My group had 3 other people who dined with us. The 2 gentlemen we were with were still hungry when we left the resturaunt. Small portions. The food was just ok, service was descent, wine glasses were filthy dirty only to be replaced with a slightly less dirty glass. The most disappointing part was the bathroom. It smelled like mold and pee. Pretty disgusting!

Downtown Hayward needs a good restaurant. Bijou has decent ambiance and lighting, but lacks a feeling of intimacy. Can't recall if there were candles on each tables, but maybe some flowers would help. Service was utterly baffling. Three or four different people served our dishes with indifference and wondered if they even had the right table. Our main waiter couldn't remember that we both ordered a glass of wine and it arrived late during the entree. Soup was way too salty and short ribs way too peppery and a little tough. Get the feeling that the place needs some better management and staff training and maybe some new recipes. Might try the pizza next time, but that's it. Please improve. . . Hayward needs you!

Took a group of 7 for a birthday dinner, 4 people had never been there before. Service was extremely slow and part of the order was forgotten. When I asked to speak to the manager, Christian, the executive Chef came out. During the conversation he mentioned he may not be the manager. When I asked for the owner's name, he wouldn't provide. Christian has poor customer service skills and I would not recommend this restaurant until the matter is addressed.

Had fixed price menu. Selections available were good and food was tasty. Left full but not overly full and quantity and quality was fine for me since I used a coupon. Full price seemed pretty stiff for the quantity and choices from the fixed price menu. Service was good. Memorable ahi tuna tartare appetizer. Wasabi sauce served with it really cleared my nasal passages. Tasty though the chip served with it felt and tasted a bit oily. Ambiance was ok though noisy. Hayward, has done a lot to improve its downtown and to make it "walk around friendly". Unfortunately this restaurant is in an area about a block off foothill blvd and area felt a bit rough with worn looking storefronts.
