Diner Reviews
  • "Fancy upscale restaurant at first glance, but when you take a closer look - its just a guise, with mediocre service and way overpriced food, that is not that good. I ordered the chilean sea bass, risoto was too salty, and fish overdone - which is a shame, cause its such a delicious fish. My husband the recommended Chicken dish - the Costco rotissere chicken is better. The small plate mussles was the only saving grace, with really delicious broth. My dirty martini was served in a margarita glass! Service too slow, no one refilled waters. Spent over $100 for 2 adults - not worth the $, will not go again."

  • "I purchased a groupon coupon that was suppose to be a fixed price dinner for 2 at a 68% discount off regular price. I paid $39 for the coupon. I purchased the coupon for the rib eye dinner it advertised including a picture of the entree. I came expecting the rib eye steak dinner with mashed potatoes and green beans as advertised. I was served a bowl of gravy with some beef chunks and french fries. The server saw the look on our faces and disappeared. Of course she did not ask how our meal was. I have dietary restrictions and cannot tolerate fried foods and heavy sauces or gravies. I could not eat my entree. Will never dine there again."

  • "The appetizer selection was satisfactory, but the entree and dessert selection was a joke. I was given 3 poor choices for entree and for dessert. A chicken leg with a scoop of bland mashed potato, my partner ordered the beef rib with a scoop of mashed potato. My other entree choice was white taco fish. The 3 desserts had fancy names, and that was the best part. The quantity of beef or chicken could be on a children menu. I have visited this restaurant 4 times in the past with Groupon or Travelzoo vouchers and had positive experiences. I have a feeling that the restaurant needed to cut food cost and felt the customer wouldn't notice, sorry but i will not go back."

  • "for my birthday, so that always helps. Myself, my daughter and her boyfriend went to The Bijou for Father's Day dinner. It was very quiet in my opinion, but then I don't know Hayward that well. As a result, the service was very attentive. Smiling faces. We ate a variety of selections from the menu since my daughter is vegetarian. Salad to steak. Every dish was very good. For the taste, ambiance, service and price I would eat at The Bijou again. And having just moved to Hayward, I likely will."

  • "Took my sister here for her birthday! I had bought a living social deal. I had a tasty ahi tartar appetizer. The sauces on the side were very good. For main course I had braised beef ribs. The meat fell off the bone but majorly lacked in flavor. The garlic mashed potatoes were also very bland and flavorless! The chocolate ice cream was good, but hard to mess up store bought ice cream. My group had 3 other people who dined with us. The 2 gentlemen we were with were still hungry when we left the resturaunt. Small portions. The food was just ok, service was descent, wine glasses were filthy dirty only to be replaced with a slightly less dirty glass. The most disappointing part was the bathroom. It smelled like mold and pee. Pretty disgusting!"

  • "We live in Hayward and first dine here w/Groupons several times, and liked it.Last night,we had a dinner w/o a voucher(invited an old friend from a diff.town), enjoyed both food and service.Chilean sea bass with mushroom risotto was absolutely delicious.I had a crab\ avocado salad for a main dish.We shared a flat bread with smoked salmon-tasty and light! One of us had a flank stake (broccolini and too many fries)and it was very good.We had a very attentive and friendly server (a young lady with a beautiful smile)-every dish and drink was served timely, dirty plates were taken away w/o any delays. We stayed after 9 pm with coffee and deserts (coffee cheese cake was the best!), and nobody rushed us out. We'll come back soon for great food!"

  • "Downtown Hayward needs a good restaurant. Bijou has decent ambiance and lighting, but lacks a feeling of intimacy. Can't recall if there were candles on each tables, but maybe some flowers would help. Service was utterly baffling. Three or four different people served our dishes with indifference and wondered if they even had the right table. Our main waiter couldn't remember that we both ordered a glass of wine and it arrived late during the entree. Soup was way too salty and short ribs way too peppery and a little tough. Get the feeling that the place needs some better management and staff training and maybe some new recipes. Might try the pizza next time, but that's it. Please improve. . . Hayward needs you!"

  • "Took a group of 7 for a birthday dinner, 4 people had never been there before. Service was extremely slow and part of the order was forgotten. When I asked to speak to the manager, Christian, the executive Chef came out. During the conversation he mentioned he may not be the manager. When I asked for the owner's name, he wouldn't provide. Christian has poor customer service skills and I would not recommend this restaurant until the matter is addressed. "

  • "We purchased a groupon for a pre fixe dinner. Enjoyed all of it! There were enough options to suit your tastes. We especially loved our entree, the Braised Short Ribs. Would definitely return for dinner in the future. We need more good restaurants in Hayward. This is now on our list of restaurants."

  • "Had fixed price menu. Selections available were good and food was tasty. Left full but not overly full and quantity and quality was fine for me since I used a coupon. Full price seemed pretty stiff for the quantity and choices from the fixed price menu. Service was good. Memorable ahi tuna tartare appetizer. Wasabi sauce served with it really cleared my nasal passages. Tasty though the chip served with it felt and tasted a bit oily. Ambiance was ok though noisy. Hayward, has done a lot to improve its downtown and to make it "walk around friendly". Unfortunately this restaurant is in an area about a block off foothill blvd and area felt a bit rough with worn looking storefronts."

  • "This was my third time using a voucher at this establishment. WARNING... the servings have shrunk, significantly!!! While the food flavor was good, the amount of food given was ridiculous. My piece of chicken was so small that it was laughable (and I am not a large portion person by any stretch of the imagination). Bijou, get it together, or just don't offer your "special!" "

  • "I admit we only came to Bijou because of a Groupon for a Prix-Fixe dinner for two. I came with best friend since my husband was out of town and we were both really impressed with the food. For the appetizer, she chose the ceviche (yum!) and I opted for healthy and got the goat cheese salad (good). We both had the rib-eye entree that came with fries. It was delicious, perfectly cooked, and the fries were so much better than the typical mashed potatoes. She got the creme brulee for dessert, and I got the Nutella sundae -- we even had room to clean off our plates! This is a rarity for me since I normally don't have dessert because I feel so stuffed. BUT the portions were spot-on and I would definitely return & recommend to friends!"

  • "There were leaves and paper scraps on the floor, the chais and tables had stains, therefore, not a good first impression. The wait staff seemed impatient when we requested hot beverage instead of water, the ketchup containers had ketchup on the sides. Food portions were larger than other restaurants, however, lacked taste except for the fries, which was the best item all night. Even though we got everything we requested, the wait staff did not acknowledge our requests so we were not sure if they will bring the drinks or ketchup or not...."

  • "The food was good, the service okay. I told the waitstaff it was my boyfriend's birthday. I said a candle or something special. They gave us a "happy birthday" on the way out the door. I was very disappointed and would not recommend this spot for a special occassion. Also the lighting was very dark, good thing we went early enough to see by daylight. The food was fantastic. The escargot was delicious. The un-birthday treatment was the big disappointment."

  • "Me and my boyfriend dined here with a living social voucher for the seasonal tasting menu. We made a reservation for 7:30 and when we arrived we where promptly seated, then our waitress came up and explained the menu to us and told us that it also came with a glass of champagne each which was a nice touch. I had the escargot as my first course and my bf had the tuna tartare, both where delicious! Then he ordered the tilapia over wild rice and I ordered the Coq Au Vin, which is a chicken roasted in a red wine sauce with mushrooms and baby onions over mashed potatoes, mine was amazing and the tilapia was okay. Then we finished off with some creme brulee. I would recommend this place to people, it is a little pricey though. "

  • "Came here because of a Travelzoo deal for 3 course menu for two. Food was not very good. Seemed like the ony available options for the prix fixe menu were variations from items on the main menu. Maybe the main menu would be better. Service was just OK."

  • "The food was good, a great place for young people due to the lively atmosphere and music. The service was outstanding. A beautiful piece of cheesecake with a candle was brought for our guest of honor who just turned 88. We used a Groupon coupon and were treated no differently than full price paying guests."

  • "It sounded like a deal I should not pass up! I purchased a Groupon coupon for 4 at $75 serving a appetizer, entree, dessert, and a glass of champagne for each person. The actual cost of the bill was $236 before tax. The Groupon coupon required the guest to pay the tax and gratuity. No Problem! However, the food was barely average. My party's order included all entree choices chicken, beef, and fish, which were all served in lunch size portions and this was dinner. We all ordered the ice cream dessert, which was two of the smallest scopes of chocolate ice cream that did not taste like chocolate, using Nutello for the sauce, no nuts, nothing to decorate the plate. • "I went out to Bijou with my girlfriend on a Friday evening and the waitress we got was quite rude and unattentive. The food was unpalatable and it was just amateur like."

  • "Ordered a bunch of small plates here which were pretty good. Only problem was after we finished the first we waited over 20 minutes for the next. The restaurant wasn't very busy so they can't use that as an excuse. Next when we ordered dessert they managed to forget one order but didn't forget to charge us for it. We took a trip to the bathroom and it smelled like a bus station. The ladies room was so bad my wife wouldn't use it. On the bright side the food was really good. Then muscles and escargot we excellent as was the tuna tartar. The desserts were also fantastic. So I would give it a thumbs up fir the food and s thumbs down for service."

  • "I've been here for special date nights and girls night out. It's a but pricey but you can see why based on the quality of their food, cocktails and service. This restaurant is more of a special occasion for me but I'm happy Hayward has a cool great place for me to go to."

  • "We drove to Hayward from Sunnyvale because we had a deal: 3 course Prix-Fixe for 2 for $39. We bought 2 of these deals and double-dated. Worth the drive due to the price. But as a restaurant, it was average. Our server, Rachel, was excellent. Beet Salad was excellent. (A green salad with some fruits, cheeses, and a few beet sections, but they were actually good!) Dungenous Crab Croquettes disappeared before I could grab a nibble. Wife said it was delicious. Beef Short Ribs not memorable. Mahi Mahi which was incredible. Friends had the chicken and the other fish dish, which they devoured. Dessert: 3 creme broulee's (not good - very egg-y) and one coffee cheesecake which was very good. The complimentary champagne was tasty."

  • "Like the song this Bijou made me Blue. Noisy like a sports bar, most of the noise was coming from the bar which in turn made the dining customers a lot louder. Not a fine restaurant in that regard. Food was good, though the selection doesn't have any resemblance to an actual Bijou cuisine. The selection is also very limited and the difference between the small plates and the large plates seemed to be proportionally closer to equal than I expected. Severely misleading with definitely a French(ish) ambiance and the Bijou ambiance one might expect from the name. Will try again and I'm hoping to have a better experience."

  • "We received excellent service. We were using a local coupon, so we were limited to some choices. However, all the food was delicious, except the chicken. I prefer white breast portions, but wasn't given a choice - leg/thigh only. The only complaint I have is the noise level is really LOUD!!!! We sat in the back corner of the restaurant side, but the noise from the bar side was so loud I could barely hear the person seated across the table. I will definitely so back, but will try going during lunch hour."

  • "We enjoyed our meal. The Escargot was perfectly cooked, the sweet/regular Frites were great (The sweet potato especially). We enjoyed our salads as well, especially the pan seared goat cheese. The portions for small plates were generous. Two salads and four small plates was almost too much for two of us. The one drink we got from the bar was really good. On the downside-The baby back ribs were a little sweet and overdone, and the Beef Carpaccio suffered from too much parmesan cheese. The ambiance was nice and the service was excellent, attentive, but not intrusive. The only drawback to the place that it was quite dark and the print on the menu was very small. I had more trouble reading the menu than any other place I have been."

  • "The positives were many. Our server, Robert, was spectacular. He had a great up-beat bubbly personality, was engaging, and was just a major dude. Robert would easily be welcomed at any of San Francisco's finer restaurants and we were happy to tip based on the meal's full value. I have no idea who the chef is at Bijou but he or she can cook and the way they present food is first-rate. We had the mussels and tuna tartare for starters, tried salmon, the short ribs and the mahi mahi for main courses and finished with Bijou Coffee Cheese Cake and the Bijou Green Tea Macaroon Ice Cream Sandwich. All were excellent I think they should spend the time to sweep the front of the restaurant. I think $11.50 for a lemon drop is ridiculous."
