A word from Big Grove Tavern
At Big Grove Tavern, we celebrate the true sense of the word tavern. The heart and soul of a community, the tavern is a warm and welcoming place bringing together both visitors and locals. It is somewhere to share a pint of ale or a wholesome meal with your neighbor, a place that welcomes all regardless of your position or status.

It is in this tradition that we bring you Big Grove Tavern. Our mission is to source local and farm fresh ingredients whenever possible – not only to create delicious dishes but to help support our neighbors.

Our name comes from a large stand of trees called, “The Big Grove,” which offered shelter from the wide open prairie skies during the earliest days of our community. Now known as Busey Woods, you can still see the remnant of Big Grove in Urbana today. Whether you’re from Champaign, Urbana, the University, the surrounding towns or a visitor –ALL are welcome at Big Grove.

Eat, drink and think local.

  • "Sunday brunch. Very good, orriginal dishes. Not just your typical brunch fare..... Surpirised it was not busier. It should be.."

  • "I was traveling through town alone, so decided to eat at their bar. The menu looked great, but the bartender couldn't have ignored me more if she had tried. I had one drink, paid my tab, and left. Service at Ko-Fusion (sushi restaurant next door) was superlative."

  • "Excellent experience all the way around. We sure to be back."

  • "My son and I had brunch on a Saturday at the Big Grove Tavern in Champaign. It is not a typical brunch but a limited menu with some great items to meet just about anyone's tastes. It is not a "tavern" atmosphere by any means. Comfortable setting and simple yet updated furnishings. Great food and great service. I would like to return in the evening for dinner as the menu looks interesting. I would recommend based on my experience. A pleasant surprise was "breakfast" popcorn...that day it was flavored with bacon and cinnamon coffee grounds...it was excellent!"

  • "I was completely blown away by my experience at Big Grove Tavern! I'd heard high praise about the restaurant from many of my friends before I went, but I can personally say that it was one of the best dining experiences I've ever had! I ordered the Sweet Pea Risotto and it was absolutely to die for. A vegetarian's dream dish! I would recommend BGT to anyone looking for the perfect rustic, chic restaurant."

  • "Great farm-to-table restaurant. It's one of those places where everything looks good so you can't decide. From beer and cheese sampling to roasted pork with pickled mustard seeds to the edison bulb decor, it's a must for foodies. Excellent pricing for the kind of place it is, as well."

  • "Love the fresh local food! I am a big believer in supporting local farmers. Makes a huge difference in the quality and taste."

  • "Very good menu options and great food. Service was also very fast and attentive. Noise level lower than most restaurants."

  • "Big Grove has become one of our favorite restaurants to celebrate any occasion! The wine is always good, and the food - delicious! Can't wait until it's warm enough to eat outside on their outdoor patio!"

  • "Dined here recently after not eating here since this place opened when we weren't so impressed so wanted to give it another try. We settled i nto the menu and ordered a bottle a wine...30 minutes later the waitress came back to our table to tell us that the dishes one of us had ordered which was the special..was no longer available.. again 30 mins after we ordered and it being barely 6:30pm and already out of the special homeade pasta of the day? really?.. Don't get me wrong what we did ordered was good although my cauliflower soup lacked any taste or seasoning, but the problem lies in the service aspect. Service seemed slow and amateurish..We had to repeatedly ask for water from our server which is unacceptable when paying those highprices"

  • "Great spot in downtown Champaign. Nice cocktails and decent local beers. I've been here a couple times and both times had good service and tasty food. My son's salmon was good. My spare rib on a bed of grits was fantastic. Good place, give it a try."

  • "We like Big Grove Tavern for its commitment to make good food from local ingredients. I had the farro with chicken and coconut sauce: yum; my spouse had steak (of course). We particularly liked the green salad with cheese and grapes. I found that both of my dishes were too salty for my taste, so I will take the server's advice to ask for future orders to be underseasoned. She was very nice but seemed a little harried. We will definitely be back."

  • "This was our second visit to Big Grove Tavern and once again each and every dish ordered by our party of six was excellent and perfectly done. The decor is sophisticated and interesting and the food presentation was wonderful, as was the service. We will definitely return to Big Grove; cheers to the chef!"

  • "There is no better restaurant in Champaign-Urbana! The food is delicious and creative, the service is always top notch and the drink list is perfect. I love BGT!"

  • "Our table of 4 visited on a very busy evening. Our server did a great job considering her load of tables. The beer choices were outstanding and our entrees ranged from good to great. We enjoyed our choices. I'll say the Tavern Burger is outstanding but I'd not order it cooked beyond medium. Medium-well proved a bit dry but still tasty."

  • "Been to Big Grove many times and have always had a good experience. Saturday night was no exception except for one thing, the service. It was even better than it normally is. Our server was knowledgable, timely and enhanced our experience."

  • "I thought the noise level was very loud. Great bar. I was disappointed that a dessert I saw on the on-line menu was not available. The waiter indicated they do change their menu periodically. I ordered the carrot cake and was disappointed. Service was fabulous. The gentleman filling our water and taking plates was outstanding. Funny and interactive. He was the highlight of the experience. The beef rib was fabulous."

  • "This is the second time I have eaten at Big Grove and both times our experience was exceptional. The food options are a bit trendy, but delicious. I have tried the Salmon and the Grilled Chicken. Both items were cooked perfectly and the accompanying sides were different but worked well together. My only complaint would be the time waiting to receive the entrees. It was over 30 minutes before our food arrived after ordering. If you know this ahead of time, it is well worth the wait."

  • "The chicken and short rib were both very tasty, the sides that went with them were so-so. The appetizer list was not great, nothing really that could be shared with a date. Nuts, pretzels, and pickled vegetables are not romantic. The options for the main entree is challenging for picky eaters. I'd recommend trying it once but that's enough for me. If they changed their menu I would definitely go back. The ambiance is nice and the waitress was friendly."

  • "Big Grove restaurant is in the slow food tradition using local farmers products whenever possible. The food is all ways good and consistent. The atmosphere is very nice, classy. It can get a little loud in the main dining room if it is full, which includes the bar, has high ceilings, but is convivial. The service is all ways exceptional. The Valentine's prie fixe menu was adventurous and fun to eat."

  • "Don't let the name fool you! Big Grove Tavern is a restaurant, not just a bar. The menu is limited. However, we were able to find something for everyone. The food was very good. The service was excellent. Our server, Ashley, was fantastic. We came in for brunch, and left with garlic popcorn. :-) I would definitely recommend the Big Grove Tavern."

  • "Dining here was a good experience. The food was good, though I discovered I prefer not to have sausage mixed with the red meat in my burger."

  • "I went here for valentine's day and was genuinely impressed. It's a much nicer restaurant than the name would suggest"
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "I went here on Valentine's Day and it was definitely a great choice. The food was amazing I ordered the salmon and the Seared pork tenderloin. They're both excellent. They have a great selection of beer and wine as well."

  • "I love the atmosphere of Big Grove Tavern! The decor is beautiful. The food is even better! Everything is locally sourced and delicious. I would dine here every night if I could! The pork belly appetizer melts in your mouth."

  • "My first brunch at Big Grove left me wanting. It felt like they don't do breakfast and don't care to. We ordered hot tea and grapefruit juice right away and were told that the tea was substandard and that they don't have grapefruit juice, even though it's a key ingredient of one of their brunch cocktails. While I appreciated the honesty of my server about the tea, I was a little lost. He helpfully offered coffee, but I'm not a coffee drinker and with it cold outside, I wanted a hot drink. I ended up with a delicious cocktail, that did nothing to help me start my day our warm up. I still love this restaurant and will continue to visit, just not when I'm in the mood for brunch."

  • "The team at Big Grove is focused on quality food with quality service. Comfort food with a local focus. And consistency is outstanding. There is NO difference in core meals from visit to visit. A huge surprise."

  • "This was my third visit to Big Grove Tavern, and once again, it did not disappoint. The dishes are fresh and inspired, and the taste combinations they choose for their dishes are unique and delicious. Looking forward to going again!"

  • "Great Sunday breakfast. We were looking for someplace new and boy, did we find it. This is a farm to table restaurant. They will give you a small breakfast menu as well as a lunch menu. We particularly enjoyed the popcorn that was brought in a small galvanized bucket. They change the flavorings, but we had bacon/coffee that morning. It was great! Our next trip there will be for dinner Great coffee, too."

  • "Always well executed. Big Grove brings competitive dining from TV to Champaign County. Always appreciate the professional and thoughtful service."

  • "Good food served in a comfortable elegant atmosphere. The service is as good as the food. Great place for dinner before the Spymphony!"

  • "This is one of two gourmet dining experiences that can be had in Champaign. The pork and salmon dishes were both very good! I would give them a 5 star. The only miss were the pear slices on the pate plate - they were flavorless. Service needs to be improved: a plate was removed from in front of me while I was still chewing the last bite. Also check arrived before we were finished eating. Serving sizes are reasonable, and prices are a little high, but the gourmet food is worth it. Definitely would go back."

  • "We've visited Big Grove many times and have consistently had good if not excellent food and service. The small plates are delightful, with a variety of tastes to try. They've also got a really solid vegetarian menu. Only complaint this trip were the greens with my fish were definitely oversalted. I figured the first time this happened it was a fluke, but this is the second or third time the greens have been way too salty. Otherwise, fabulous!"

  • "Everything was wonderful from the service to the food. We had the filet and the chicken. Everything was cooked to perfection. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Would definitely recommend Big Grove Tavern, it will become a regular dinner destination for us!"

  • "The food was excellent. The service was also excellent. Eating at a restaurant the serves local produce is a great option"

  • "Excellent service, reasonably good food, and fun atmosphere all for a reasonable price makes this a go to place for a fun evening with friends. Enjoy the popcorn better than a bread basket!"
