A word from Big Grove Tavern
At Big Grove Tavern, we celebrate the true sense of the word tavern. The heart and soul of a community, the tavern is a warm and welcoming place bringing together both visitors and locals. It is somewhere to share a pint of ale or a wholesome meal with your neighbor, a place that welcomes all regardless of your position or status.

It is in this tradition that we bring you Big Grove Tavern. Our mission is to source local and farm fresh ingredients whenever possible – not only to create delicious dishes but to help support our neighbors.

Our name comes from a large stand of trees called, “The Big Grove,” which offered shelter from the wide open prairie skies during the earliest days of our community. Now known as Busey Woods, you can still see the remnant of Big Grove in Urbana today. Whether you’re from Champaign, Urbana, the University, the surrounding towns or a visitor –ALL are welcome at Big Grove.

Eat, drink and think local.

Diner Reviews
  • "Big Grove Tavern in downtown Champaign has the right style and fabulous food for a neat downtown place. Lots of locally sourced, well-prepared food and desserts...who wouldn't love panna cotta with caramel further topped with some caramel-coated popcorn? Oh, be still my heart. Three of us enjoyed perfectly prepared and nicely served meals of free-range chicken in a broth with veggies and tiny potatoes and dressing dumplings, pork loin, and mac and cheese. Appetizers of beets and deviled eggs got us ready. The wait staff doesn't bother diners but are responsive. Nice wine list. Big Grove always delivers."

  • "For the money there are better places in C-U. It's hard to complain too much when you order filet but we weren't really impressed - it was just kind of okay."

  • "Best roasted chicken ever!!!!! Excellent, friendly service. Nothing negative to say!!!"

  • "We have been to this restaurant a number of Tim's & enjoyed it very much; the rankings are based upon our most recent visit . On Saturday we went for brunch & discovered dogs are allowed at the tables outside. This was not pleasant as dogs bark, sniff people as they walk by, & not everyone wants to share a meal with a dog. If we wanted to hang out with dogs we would not have gone to a restaurant. We recommend this place if they omit the welcome wagon for animals. "

  • "We love Big Grove Tavern! The food is always delicious and the wait staff is friendly. We like the fact that the food is locally grown which makes the menu a seasonal one. It's fun to see what new foods are on the menu!"

  • "The roasted chicken was very salty and not worth the price. They exchanged it for Mahi Mahi dish, but poured a ton of radish (many with tails still on them). Who can eat that much radish?"

  • "Loved the green salad with orange-coriander dressing, such a pleasant change from the usual. I also enjoyed the deviled egg, love to see different options from the typical restaurant menu!"

  • "Great place for outdoor seating! Especially during the summer - they have live music on Friday nights! The food is always perfect :) Definitely recommended Big Grove :)"

  • " This was my second visit to Big Grove Tavern. It is an attractive restaurant with attentive, informed service. We enjoyed our dinner - roasted chicken was outstanding. However the two people who ordered the beef really disliked the flowering kale side. All four of us tasted it and found it quite bitter. It was unfamiliar to us so we were wiling to try it but would have appreciated a warning about the bitterness. Kale aside, I am looking forward to returning to Big Grove to try out their summer menus."

  • "We have been to Big Grove 3 or 4 times now and loved it every time! The popcorn they bring to the table is different every time, as are the deviled eggs and they are a treat! The menu changes quite frequently, but there are some main dishes that stick around and they are excellent as well! The menu is small so you aren't overwhelmed by too many choices, and everything that is on the menu is a gem! Local foods, great combinations, and you must save room for dessert!"

  • "We went here for the 1st time for our anniv. Had a great waiter. We had a few sm appet to start. Husband had short rib &loved it! I had the filet & it was a ill rare for me, but they took it and cooked it more then it was great!"

  • "While I still think Big Grove's greatest strength is its lunch menu, the brunch we had in May 2014 was pretty good. There are a variety of menu options that, relative to other downtown brunch spots, are moderately priced ($8ish for salads, $10-12 for entrees, $7 for drinks). The outdoor seating at Big Grove is quiet lovely and not to be missed on a nice day. "

  • "They couldn't come up with a tomato slice and onion slice to put on the tavern burger. If you want one with aoli and marmalade, I guess it would be ok, but if you want any personalization of your meal, don't expect it here. It was also painfully loud. I think this was the layout of the building. Noises are amplified. Overall - nothing to recommend the place for, no real reason to go again. "

  • "Big Grove has an eclectic menu and a comfortable dining space. It is quiet so it is perfect for business lunches and dinners. The service is always very good and very dependable."

  • "I have been to Big Grove three times and each time I have found the wait staff slightly pretentious, the food tasty but way over priced. The drinks are similarly over priced but well mixed. If it was not for a gift card to the restaurant, I doubt I would have selected to dine there. There are other places just as good at a better price."

  • "I was traveling through town alone, so decided to eat at their bar. The menu looked great, but the bartender couldn't have ignored me more if she had tried. I had one drink, paid my tab, and left. Service at Ko-Fusion (sushi restaurant next door) was superlative."

  • "Sunday brunch. Very good, orriginal dishes. Not just your typical brunch fare..... Surpirised it was not busier. It should be.."

  • "I was completely blown away by my experience at Big Grove Tavern! I'd heard high praise about the restaurant from many of my friends before I went, but I can personally say that it was one of the best dining experiences I've ever had! I ordered the Sweet Pea Risotto and it was absolutely to die for. A vegetarian's dream dish! I would recommend BGT to anyone looking for the perfect rustic, chic restaurant."

  • "My son and I had brunch on a Saturday at the Big Grove Tavern in Champaign. It is not a typical brunch but a limited menu with some great items to meet just about anyone's tastes. It is not a "tavern" atmosphere by any means. Comfortable setting and simple yet updated furnishings. Great food and great service. I would like to return in the evening for dinner as the menu looks interesting. I would recommend based on my experience. A pleasant surprise was "breakfast" popcorn...that day it was flavored with bacon and cinnamon coffee grounds...it was excellent!"

  • "Great farm-to-table restaurant. It's one of those places where everything looks good so you can't decide. From beer and cheese sampling to roasted pork with pickled mustard seeds to the edison bulb decor, it's a must for foodies. Excellent pricing for the kind of place it is, as well."

  • "Big Grove has become one of our favorite restaurants to celebrate any occasion! The wine is always good, and the food - delicious! Can't wait until it's warm enough to eat outside on their outdoor patio!"

  • "Dined here recently after not eating here since this place opened when we weren't so impressed so wanted to give it another try. We settled i nto the menu and ordered a bottle a wine...30 minutes later the waitress came back to our table to tell us that the dishes one of us had ordered which was the special..was no longer available.. again 30 mins after we ordered and it being barely 6:30pm and already out of the special homeade pasta of the day? really?.. Don't get me wrong what we did ordered was good although my cauliflower soup lacked any taste or seasoning, but the problem lies in the service aspect. Service seemed slow and amateurish..We had to repeatedly ask for water from our server which is unacceptable when paying those highprices"

  • "We like Big Grove Tavern for its commitment to make good food from local ingredients. I had the farro with chicken and coconut sauce: yum; my spouse had steak (of course). We particularly liked the green salad with cheese and grapes. I found that both of my dishes were too salty for my taste, so I will take the server's advice to ask for future orders to be underseasoned. She was very nice but seemed a little harried. We will definitely be back."

  • "This was our second visit to Big Grove Tavern and once again each and every dish ordered by our party of six was excellent and perfectly done. The decor is sophisticated and interesting and the food presentation was wonderful, as was the service. We will definitely return to Big Grove; cheers to the chef!"

  • "Great spot in downtown Champaign. Nice cocktails and decent local beers. I've been here a couple times and both times had good service and tasty food. My son's salmon was good. My spare rib on a bed of grits was fantastic. Good place, give it a try."

  • "Our table of 4 visited on a very busy evening. Our server did a great job considering her load of tables. The beer choices were outstanding and our entrees ranged from good to great. We enjoyed our choices. I'll say the Tavern Burger is outstanding but I'd not order it cooked beyond medium. Medium-well proved a bit dry but still tasty."

  • "Been to Big Grove many times and have always had a good experience. Saturday night was no exception except for one thing, the service. It was even better than it normally is. Our server was knowledgable, timely and enhanced our experience."

  • "I thought the noise level was very loud. Great bar. I was disappointed that a dessert I saw on the on-line menu was not available. The waiter indicated they do change their menu periodically. I ordered the carrot cake and was disappointed. Service was fabulous. The gentleman filling our water and taking plates was outstanding. Funny and interactive. He was the highlight of the experience. The beef rib was fabulous."
    Dined on 2/21/2014
  • "The chicken and short rib were both very tasty, the sides that went with them were so-so. The appetizer list was not great, nothing really that could be shared with a date. Nuts, pretzels, and pickled vegetables are not romantic. The options for the main entree is challenging for picky eaters. I'd recommend trying it once but that's enough for me. If they changed their menu I would definitely go back. The ambiance is nice and the waitress was friendly."

  • "This is the second time I have eaten at Big Grove and both times our experience was exceptional. The food options are a bit trendy, but delicious. I have tried the Salmon and the Grilled Chicken. Both items were cooked perfectly and the accompanying sides were different but worked well together. My only complaint would be the time waiting to receive the entrees. It was over 30 minutes before our food arrived after ordering. If you know this ahead of time, it is well worth the wait."

  • "Don't let the name fool you! Big Grove Tavern is a restaurant, not just a bar. The menu is limited. However, we were able to find something for everyone. The food was very good. The service was excellent. Our server, Ashley, was fantastic. We came in for brunch, and left with garlic popcorn. :-) I would definitely recommend the Big Grove Tavern."
