A word from Big Bowl-Reston
There’s really only one place for authentic Chinese and Thai, and that's Big Bowl. It all begins with the highest quality ingredients–naturally raised chicken and beef, heirloom pork, sustainable seafood and produce grown locally. Because Big Bowl believes that the best food is made from scratch, you can taste big, bold layers of flavors in every dish, from the curries right down to the dipping sauces.

Everyone raves about the pad Thai, our spicy dishes that are truly hot, and our create-your-own stir-fry–and for good reason. Every element adds up to big taste and takes our food to another level, be it a fresh squeeze of lime, fragrant herbs or the seared Thai chilies.

Big Bowl is so big on authentic flavors that even the ginger ale is made with fresh ginger root–from scratch, of course.

Diner Reviews
  • "My fiance and I took my soon to be inlaws here on Saturday evening. They had really good food, and it was a nice place inside. The only downside is that if you're trying to talk to the people you're out to dinner with, you won't hear them. The noise level is extremely bad. Primarily due to the large amount of patrons, but they also had music on, and I believe that makes the patrons have to speak louder. Overall it was a good exeperience, but I can't remember the last time I was at a nice restaraunt and the noise level reminded me of Redskins game. Otherwise the cocktails were great, the apps, and the main dishes were as expected."

  • "Don't come here if you want to be able to talk to your table mates! It's so loud you can't hear the person talking next to you. The service was pretty slow, to the point that we wondered why we ordered an appetizer because we really just wanted our food at that point. Taste of food was pretty good, but not sure that overcame the other issues of the place"

  • "Big Bowl is always packed at the Reston Town Center, but their food is very fresh and great table service. The chicken lettuce wraps are amazing, as well as the Shrimp Pad Thai. Always come back here for my favorite dishes. Great ambiance as well."

  • "Big Bowl seldom disappoints. It has a lively air. Not the least of it is due to its energetic servers. Many of them are young. All of them seem spirited. There is a quality of enthusiasm in this restaurant. The food was good. But -- I have to say this -- it wasn't wonderful. The quality was less than what I am used to here (I have dined here often). It was just okay."

  • "Big Bowl has been a favorite restaurant of mine for years. My most recent dining experience has not made me think otherwise. The server was courteous, took our order correctly, and was timely with our requests. I have no doubt that I'll return to Big Bowl again in the near future."

  • "Great food and service. Family friendly we will go back."

  • "Food is good. The menu could use some enhancements. Meals say "spring" vegetables or "in season vegetables" but the Waiter's sometimes don't know what's included. The restaurant is extremely loud. Sitting across from someone and you can hardly hear them. Also, not sure why they allow you to reserve a table, you always have to wait even with a reservation."

  • "Excellent food and service. Short, expensive wine pours. Very loud music-good music, just rather loud. Food is always delicious."

  • "Our server Mario was great. Very attentive. The manager was also very attentive. He stopped by our table to check on us."

  • "We went to Big Bowl twice and enjoyed it very much. We had pot stickers, vegetable and chicken, they were awesome and three sauces made them better. Also had pad thai and sweet scallops and shrimp both were very good and would get them again."

  • "This was our first time eating at Big Bowl. The food was delicious. The service was great. I can't wait to get back for dinner again."

  • "My friend got her usual -- BBQ fried rice -- and was very pleased with it. I tried a lunch special -- field green salad, sesame chicken, and an apple crisp for dessert. We shared the dessert -- it was delicious. My sesame chicken was spicy and flavorful. Our waiter, Milton, was attentive and personable. We'll ask for him when we return -- and we will!"

  • "Server was fine, but really not pleased with any of the food. Wonton soup was like none I'd had before. Vietnamese chicken soup tasted like cilantro and nothing else. Orange chicken was more like orange chicken crumbs...very tiny bits of chicken. Mongolian beef had a good flavor - when you could find some beef. The green onions and other vegetables overwhelmed the dish. And the brown rice was terribly dry and tasteless. We've only been there once before, and we were equally underwhelmed. Steamed dumplings were the only thing we had that we really enjoyed, unfortunately."

  • "While not extensive in size, the gluten free options are very well made and offer a good variety."

  • "Appetizers were good--spicy beans and beef lettuce wraps. Panang curry was very heavy and not authentic. Spicy chickenwas too salty and vinegar-y. Build your own bowl with salmon, kung pap, and chef's choice veggies was a hit for the person who ordered it. But 2/3 dinner entrees falling short does not bode well for a repeat visit."

  • "Took my girlfriend to this restaurant in Reston and it was a great location on the corner of the street. Seated immediately even though it was valentines day and the food was brought out in a timely manner. Teriyaki chicken and fried rice is excellent. Waitress was kind and checked in often enough. Good overall restaurant for Chinese/Thai food."

  • "Big Bowl is a great go to restaurant when you want reliable. Always order the stir fry bar where I can pick and choose what I want to eat. There is an abundance of fresh veggies to pick from. Sauces are delicious too. You can also order many other dishes from the vast selections on the menu."

  • "Great place to go for a variety of choices. Have been many times and meat, vegetables, and sauces are always fresh. Satisfying portions too."

  • "We made a res on OT, and arrived on time to find that the greeter could not have been less pleasant or less informative about telling us to wait in the over-crowded reception area. While our wait was under 10 minutes, others with reservations were obviously getting antsy and vocal about waiting. Waitress took our empty water container as if to refill it but she never returned - we had to flag her down and she seemed surprised that we would ask for more water on the table. Food was ok, nothing special, but pricey."

  • "We were a group of 5. The volume of the music and the general din in the restaurant made conversation difficult. Because 2 of the group were first-timers, we got a free welcoming appetizer. We also ordered a round of potstickers ... always a good choice. The ginger ale is gingery -- order the one mixed with orange juice for more sweetness. Our waitress was terrific -- friendly, enthusiastic, and helpful. All Chinese and Thai dishes were delicious. Portion size was sufficient to require doggie boxes."

  • "The Big Bowl team greeted me by name, and took me to a very nice corner table in the back. Since this was a business meeting, it was perfect as the noise level was very manageable."

  • "The food here is consistently good but the service is generally awful and there is always lot's of attitude dished out from the hostess station. We had a female server tonight that was the best ever. I did not get her name unfortunately but she had a Russian dialect and if I were promised to have her as a server every time I dined there, I would eat their three times a week."

  • "Best food for that price. No surprise in the menu but always fresh and never disappointing. Good friendly service, nice bar. Bad point though: Music was too loud. But it was a Saturday night. Still, too loud."

  • "I have been a long time supporters of Big Bowl but my recent visit was disappointing. Perhaps it was due in part to our servers inattention. She was friendly but confused. I felt forgotten. On the food, one guest ordered the Kung Pao Chicken. Might have better been called Kung Pao peanuts...lots of peanuts but a severely limited amount of chicken. Seems like there has been decrease in the amount of main ingredients in their dishes. Food has lost its "sparkle." After supporting this restaurant for many years, we have decided it is time to "move on.""

  • "We first visited Big Bowl years ago. What keeps us coming back is the vegetable bar. They have it set up so that you can order your meal by picking the type of meat (or go vegetarian), the type of sauce (8 +- choices) and rice or noodles. Then they give you a big bowl (hence the name) and you go to a vegetable bar where you can fill your bowl with whatever veggies you want. They have at least two dozen choices from onions, a couple of different types of mushrooms, green and red peppers, bamboo, shallots, hot peppers, carrots, pineapple, etc. etc. etc. It's all very fresh. Then you give it to the kitchen, and they cook it up. It's awesome. You can also order from the menu, and they have a lot of standard Chinese and Thai dishes"

  • "Service was exceptional. My boyfriend and I visited at lunchtime on a Tuesday afternoon. As first time diners we were offered a free 2 piece appetizer, unfortunately I do not recall what it was - though very good. We ordered the Spicy Sichuan Green Beans for a full appetizer which was very flavorful. It had a little kick to it but not hot. I would recommend them. This was followed by their Pho. This was my first time having Pho so I do not have anything to compare it to, but it was hot and delicious. Just what I needed when temps were 9 degrees outside! For my main meal I had the Thai Hot Pepper Chicken with Basil and Peanuts. This was definitely a hot dish, loved all the cilantro, great blend of flavors! Highly recommend this dish."

  • "We went to BIg Bowl on New Years Eve--reservations were a must that night, as the place was packed. The menu had changed a bit since we were there a while ago--we took advantage of the Family Style meal for groups of 4 or more. We had PLENTY of food for everyone, my daughter is a vegetarian and there were great choice there that we all enjoyed. Place is pretty noisy, but we lucked out and got a table by the bar where we could at least hear each other."

  • "Not only was the food and service excellent, we arrived early for our reservations and instant accomodations were made. The noise level was abit loud, but everyone seemed to be enjoying theirselves on a very cold Christmas eve."

  • "This is an ok Asian restaurant which tries to do both Chinese and Thai dishes. None of them are truly "authentic" and the emphasis is on chicken with some beef and shrimp. For example, Chinese dumplings are almost ALWAYS pork and there is no pork on the menu at all. So if you just want basic Asian this place will do."

  • "We went here after an afternoon movie, it was only a short walk around the block. They had a very good menu with plenty of choices. There Thai beef lettuce wraps were very delicious with a great mix of flavors. My wife had the Pad Thai and enjoyed that, and I had the Panang Curry Chicken with Jasmine rice which was very good. I would recommend this place to anyone in the area."

  • "My family and I were looking forward to dining at the Big-Bowl Restaurant because of the variety of Chinese and Thai options available. Sadly, we were underwhelmed. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad, it just wasn't very good either. The best thing that we had were the green beans from the appetizer menu. The rest of the meal was drenched in sauces and not very flavorful. With all of the dining options in Reston Town Center, we would opt out of a return visit to the Big-Bowl."

  • "Big Bowl is changing a little over time. We find that their healthy side is getting a hit as their menu changes. Some of the more healthy choices are a little less so. I got lettuce wraps, usually one of the most health, but the oil a grease in the filling was dominate. After showing the waitress they attempted to do it over, and it came back slightly better, but still not as good as other local restaurants. The select your own stir fry is as good as ever. I like the selection of fresh ingredients and the sauce and base choices."

  • "Enjoyed eating at Big Bowl in Reston, especially the stir-fry bar where you could choose your own veggies, meat, sauce and rice - I always enjoyed the flavor profile. Chicken lettuce cups were terrific, and I liked the peanut satay sauce. I also like how accommodating the restaurant is to kids, especially given the more hip ambiance. Service, unfortunately, was a little slow (we only saw our server once after our food came in, so beverages and water glasses left unfilled). But there was minimal wait with the reservation (thank you, Open Table) so in general, it was a positive experience."

  • "The food at the BB is great, however for lunch it's sometimes too much. The lunch menu they added a few months ago was a perfect addition. Same great flavor but perfectly sized. And it's still a good amount of food for the value!"
