Diner Reviews
  • "All the food was good and well priced. The most delicious thing was the Salmon entrée; it was very fine quality fish and seemed to be extremely fresh...both of which are so important with regard to fish."

  • "We had the trout special and the ahi tuna for entrees and dumplings for an appetizer. Everything was delicious."

  • "Me and and friend had the shrimp toast and potstickers convo and as app and that alone was tremendous. As far as entrees we order Mongolian beef and the sesame chicken and split the two....again that was delicious and to too if all off was the warm dark chocolate cake....I will definitely be going here again soon!!"

  • "This place has surprisingly good food for a formulaic chain restaurant. The BBQ salmon was perfectly cooked and flavorful, and the Panang curry chicken was well prepared and mildly spiced. Service is a bit shaky but adequate. Exceedingly limited wine list has a couple of adequate cheap wines by the glass - beer would be a better choice. The vibrant bar scene can produce a lot of noise on a busy night."

  • "We always enjoy he ambiance at this restaurant, lively and energetic. Also, we usually enjoy the food, this time hot and sour soup, chicken lettuce wrap and the select your own vegetable stir fry."

  • "Was disappointed with our overall dining experience. I made a comment to the restaurant in my Open Table reservation that we were celebrating a birthday. This is my niece's favorite place to eat and we brought her here to celebrate her birthday. No mention was made of the birthday, nor did she receive a complimentary dessert for the occasion. Also, it seems like there are not a lot of entree options on the menu compared with past dining experiences, and my husband and I both thought the portions were on the small side. I think it will be a while before we return here in the future. There are too many other restaurants to try."

  • "We had a nice time at Big Bowl. Pot stickers and spring rolls are excellent. The beef and broccoli is one of the best ever. Pad Thai looked good too"

  • "I am not one to mention servers by name in reviews, whether positively or negatively, but in this case, I have to proclaim how awesome Patrick was. As my recent dive into veganism is in its early stages, dining out has become quite interesting. I have to say, how accommodating and gracious Patrick was about my 'diet choice' really blew me and my guest away. As a matter of fact, they already have a vegan item on the menu, but he offered to check on a few other things for me, which allowed me some variety. Awesome job! Thanks for allowing me to feel welcomed and leave full and happy. As an aside, bring back the old prep for the cashew chicken! (proclaimed my guest)"

  • "Always take my family here when they come up. The grilled trout special was fantastic and the coconut fudge sunday was a great finish. Also the Asparagus Tempera was very good.We always look forward to the seasonal Sangria as the Sangrias here are really wonderful by the pitcher. We all thought this was the best yet in all the times we've been here. More relatives in next week so we'll be back."

  • "Wow - what a pleasure to visit Big Bowl again after many years. A new chef has brought life and vitality into the restaurant and updated menus and the creative process. Beverages were excellent especially the Blood Orange Sangria - strong and full of fruit. The story was in the apps with shrimp toast and the shrimp pork dumplings being the best we've ever tried. Entrees were strong too - the 15 spice beef was expertly seasoned, while the Sichuan steak had just the right amount of spicy. Cashew chicken looked too pretty to eat but was delicious also. Simply can't wait to go back here. Professional service and a delightful staff rounded out the picture for us. A++."

  • "The service was not good, they got us the wrong dish twice, The food was cold, and the stuff did not care,"

  • "It appears that Big Bowl has reduced their menu, to some extent. However, I was relieved to see that many familiar dishes were still available.I usually order the same dish each time I eat at Big Bowl: a yellow curry dish with shrimp. In the past it has been quite flavorful, with a balance of spice and sweetness. However, this time the dish was actually bland, with no outstanding flavors. The green beans and red peppers were not over-cooked and did retain some bite, perfect for this type of dish. It also appears that the portion size has been reduced and the dish is served in a different manner than previously experienced.I have not given up on Big Bowl and will give it a few more tries. But, I was disappointed with this most recent meal."

  • "Forgive the cliche title, but this restaurant has been a "go-to" for years each time we are in Chicago, which is quite often. We knew something was different as soon as we were handed our menus. It seems that this particular location is a "test" restaurant for the entire chain, and since the first week in December, they have been experimenting with a new (and MUCH smaller) menu and have eliminated quite a few items, including my husband's favorite dish. My pad tai had zero taste and the peanut sauce I requested on the side was so hot that it ruined the taste for anything else. My husband ordered some crunchy chicken dish and was extremely disappointed. He left half of it. Why change something that wasn't broken. We won't be back."

  • "All staff were most friendly and accomodating...from valet to hostesses to our server Pace of service was ideal. We so often feel rushed at restaurants to get done and get out. Not at Big Bowl. We were able to enjoy each course and each other without feeling fused at all."

  • "Big Bowl is a favorite destination - we've been to several in multiple states. The food is fresh and flavorful - a healthy choice for dinner out. A solid choice in our experience. The potstickers we particularly delicious."

  • "the new atmossphere falls short for romantic and kid friendy. the old marg with fresh lime was great and new one was not. i can eat raw tuna 5 times a week but the preparation was way too much. it turned clean sushi in to a dish as greasy as everything else. In NYC i can also eat Chinese 5 times a week because they keep it light and simple. All vegetables come to the table with their original color and texture. it is not necessary for 90 percent of the fat and carbs to come from the sauces and preparation. Big Bowl has always had great signature tastes and even though they were way to greasy, the taste was always good. Keeping the taste with less sauce would have worked, but it looks like it went the other way."

  • "Good comfort food with a zing. Although Big Bowl is a chain the menu is nice and the food is prepared well. If you're in the mood for a low key good food restaurant Big Bowl won't disappoint."

  • "Long time Big Bowl fan and when we got there we were told the menu has changed. We were very worried at first b/c we have a couple things that we get every time. The potstickers are now made in house and we loved the not-in-house ones before so we were worried they'd be different than what we've always loved...they were AWESOME! You even get six now instead of five which is smart b/c why do they give an odd number when sharing? Not anymore! And they're bigger and just cooked perfectly. Stir-fry bar was delicious. Good service, consistently a good place to go."

  • "This Big Bowl has been a neighborhood staple for years. However, the recent "redo" of the menu is more than just a tweak - and it goes too far! Folks do not come here for more upscale meals (and prices); they come here for an easy, comfortable place to get good, interesting but uncomplicated Asian food. The changes to the menu go way too far and risk alienating a loyal, local clientele. LEY, please dial back a bit!"

  • "New menu at Big Bowl--more small plates, less variety. Not sure I am resonating with the selections. Food is generally consistent and good--but if you don't want to make your own bowl, some of the great go-to items on the menu are gone. I'll try again and see how it goes."

  • "This Big Bowl location was far inferior to the one on Ohio Street. The service was slow and unresponsive, some dishes were very bland and others way to spicy to be edible, even though they were ordered mild. We love the Big Bow but would not go bad to this location."

  • "This was my yearly pilgrimage to the Big Bowl on Cedar with a group of 10. We keep coming back year after year when we visit Chicago....probably the past 10 years in a row we've enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. We'll be back next year. They's better have a BIG table for us...."

  • "Lighting was dark and food was marginal. Didn't taste authentic. Stirfry was dry and took along time to be prepared. You will not be blown away by the Pad Thai."

  • "Greatly enjoy Big Bowl for reliable and healthy casual dining. On this visit, however, the kitchen dropped the ball and there was a 30 minute wait between finishing our appetizers and the arrival of our main courses. Before we could even raise the issue with our server, he had already apologized. Before our bill arrived, he proactively comped several small items off of the final bill - a nice gesture in consideration that we could barely start on our main courses before having to depart for a 9pm movie showing. This is the sort of customer service that will keep us coming back."

  • "Great food as always. Lots of neat flavor explosion combinations. When the family comes in we always go there. The Pomegranate Sangria's are always wonderful; we tried the special Cinnamon, Honey Sangrias and they are my favorite now. Always a nice portion. Kung Pao Chicken is my favorite here. The spring rolls are wonderful and rib appetizers are great. We also had the Pumpkin soup that has coconut milk in it and that was very good. Fun place to relax, sip a sangria or two and have a great meal. Its the only Chinese/Thai place I come away from not hungry, maybe it was the The Guinness Ice cream and chocolate covered pretzels for dessert that did it. They always have something chocolate in their great desserts selection as well!"

  • "This place is always a favorite place for my family My kids love the sesame chicken, the app riblets are awesome ! The waiter was attentive and the food was consistence. Valet parking was only 14.00 and the restaurant credits four dollars of that which brings the parking down to 10.00. This is also a great location, we typically go to the Schaumburg location but we have never had a bad experience at any of the little entertain you restaurants ."

  • "Because we had kids with us Big Bowl was a good choice for the entire group. Kids liked picking out their own vegetables for stir fry. Major disappointment was chicken stir fry. Alot of vegetables and noodles but very little chicken. Ambiance is nice, but lighting is very low. Hard to see food and menus. Waiters are friendly and accommodating. Thai food is a good choice for spicy lovers."

  • "My girlfriend and I met my dad for dinner. The food was delicious and the waitress helped him figure out the menu. Low volume in the room so my dad who wears a hearing aid could hear us. If you valet they give you $4 off you dinning bill which we thought was kinda wired. Thanks for a great night Big Bowl!"
