Big 4 Restaurant - The Huntington HotelTraditional; no surprises;Traditional; no surprises; excellent service; wines expensive but 1/2 price if you ask on Sunday.5/19/2013 12:00:00 AMQuiet sophisticationRefined, traditional, and sophisticated. A welcome holdover from a more elegant era. There should be a category that embodies these; but I guess there are too few restaurants of this sort left to warrant such a category.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMClassic gemWonderful ambience reminiscent of the classic upscale restaurant and the food was delicious!5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMRare eleganceBig 4 has the kind of elegance you don't experience very often anymore - but it's not outdated or stodgy. Impeccable but friendly service. Outstanding filet mignon. Large salads (a la carte and rather expensive). This is the kind of restaurant for when you want a memorable experience and aren't worrying about the cost.5/8/2013 12:00:00 AMEnjoyable eveningWe met old friends for dinner at The Big 4 and it did not disappoint. We could talk without shouting which was great. The good and ambiance were excellent5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMNob Hill ExperienceService and food excellent. Tables are close together
and it can be a bit noisy. Piano musician is excellent which affords an overall pleasant experience.4/30/2013 12:00:00 AM4 starsVery good food, decent portions, good service, interesting place with fabulous old photos/posters depicting SF history.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMDark, romantic and exquisite!Walking into the restaurant, it is decorated as if you are going into a classy, gentleman's den. There is a man playing the piano softly, the maitre'd is waiting patiently for your coat, and the restaurant is filled with couples enjoying each other in romantic conversation. Try something unique like the Wild Boar Chop. The bartender is a MUST-SEE! He has been bartending at The Big 4 for 19+ years. You have to get an after-dinner drink with him. My favorite is the expresso martini. -A very satisfied Wife4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMDine With Local San FranciscoThe Big 4 Restaurant is the quintessential San Francisco restaurant. Take a short step back into San Francisco history with all the old photos, the railroad magnates, the banking magnates and retailers who made San Francisco the pearl of the West. A step away from the Barbary Coast into the elegance of the 20's in old San Francisco. The Big 4 is a special place for that special event, quiet, staff is calm, well organized, at your beckon call and extremely attentive to details. The world class bar and their expert mixologist are unmatched. Their manhattans are superb, try one of your choice, MakersMark, Bourbon, Southern Comfort et al, the man is an artisan with this. Food selections are always current and use of local products is good4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMClassic Old School RestaurantClassic Old School Restaurant - From the piano playing in the bar to the perfectly prepared food - It's what dining out in a fine restaurant is all about.4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMWe like going to the Big 4.We like going to the Big 4. The surroundings are great; it has an old world San Francisco vibe. The service is always attentive. However, I think the prices are sometimes out of line for what you get. We both had the chef's special last time. The price was $33 for a pork ragu with gnocchi. The ragu lacked flavor and you only got about six to seven gnocchi. I wish the food lived up to the rest of the dining experience.4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMA favorite spot to dine! One of our favorite spots to dine in the City! Never disappoints.3/31/2013 12:00:00 AMThe service was excellentThe service was excellent but the food wasn't memorable. You are paying for the atmosphere and it was classic San Francisco.3/30/2013 12:00:00 AMThis restaurant has greatThis restaurant has great food and very personal service.
The decor takes you back to a classy yesteryear feel that is best described as "relaxing."
After 10 minutes, you blood pressure will have dropped 17%!
A wonderful spot for a quiet dinner after a hectic day.3/26/2013 12:00:00 AMA good somewhat old fashionedA good somewhat old fashioned SF dining spot. We both had the Sole, which was good. The salad was quite generous. We only had room for a shared sorbet for desert. The service was friendly and attentive.3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMAll good but food needs work. This is a nice restaurant in a wonderful Nob Hill location. I think the setting and atmosphere are terrific. The food, however, just did not seem exciting. Service is excellent, and the atmosphere is great. I think a better menu and possibly better chef could turn the food around. In fairness, I've only eaten here once in the past three years, but my previous experiences were similar to dinner on March 23, 2013.3/22/2013 12:00:00 AMWhile visiting San FranciscoWhile visiting San Francisco we stayed in the Nob hill neighborhood and we wanted a place close by to try. This restaurant was close by and the ambiance is classic. The food and service were excellent. I had the Chicken Breast Roasted under a Brick and it was so moist and tender, I was not dissapointed, the best chicken I have ever had. My husband had a filet and while he would of liked it cooked a little longer he did enjoy it. For dessert we had the Lemon creme brulee which was a perfect ending. Definitely this is a place where you can come to relax and enjoy a great meal.3/21/2013 12:00:00 AMBest Place to have a great meal inWe love this restaurant! We have been going there for years and have always had excellent service and food.
We tell everyone who is looking for a great place to eat in SF to go the The Big 4!
You will see us again and again!
Maryann and John Herring3/16/2013 12:00:00 AMA bit disappointingThe ambience and service were great. Salad and desert were excellent. But my $44 rib eye was just okay. First, I am almost sure it was a New York and not a Rib Eye because of the texture and lack of marbling throughout. Also, I ordered it medium rare and it came out medium which was disappointing. The wines by the glass were also very sub-par for a restaurant like this. There was only one Pinot Noir available. Overall, I would go back for the drinks and bar scene but not to eat.3/16/2013 12:00:00 AMBeautiful, classic room. SomewhatBeautiful, classic room. Somewhat noisy. Service well paced. Food good, not outstanding.3/15/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat overall, stunning oldGreat overall, stunning old world classic. A staple for local millionaires. Be sure to reserve. The wine menu is Fantastic, many local organic boutique wines!3/15/2013 12:00:00 AMStaff makes the differenceStaff makes the difference at Big 4. Menu is very classic so do not expect New California cuisine and vegan options.12/31/2012 12:00:00 AM
