A word from Bida Manda Restaurant and Bar
Right in the heart of downtown Raleigh, Bida Manda is a thoughtful and sharp gathering place celebrating the diverse food and culture of Laos. Bida Manda is one of the very first Laotian restaurants in the US. Sanskrit for father and mother, we name the restaurant Bida Manda as our way of honoring our parents in Laos who taught us everything we know about food, hospitality, and the power it has in bringing people together.

Our parents' recipes are the inspiration for our menu. Every dish on our menu is exactly what we grew up eating. They are the kind of dishes you might find on the street corners of Luang Prabang and at a Laotian home.

The dessert trio was a perfect ending to a delicious meal. The old fashioned jazz music is a bit odd and doesn't add to the ambience, IMHO."

  • "Bida Manda was a restaurant I have been waiting to go to for months. The atmosphere was exotic and romantic with bamboo on the walls and Laotian clothing on display behind glass on the walls. The waitress was very helpful on giving recommendations for entrees and cocktails. She told us that when Billy Joel was in town, he came and loved the crispy pork belly soup. and it was definitely the winner of the night! Delicious lemongrass coconut flavor with noodles and crispy pork. The basil stir fry and papaya salad and phone were also great. I did the restaurant week fixed price menu, and I'm glad I did because I the crispy spring rolls were so tasty and the macaron with strawberry made a nice light dessert. I can't wait to go back!"

  • "One of my favorite downtown restaurants for food, but on at 6:30 on a Thursday night the noise was overpowering. SO bad I couldn't hear my wife across the table. So bad I pulled up the sound meter app on my iPhone. The peak was 90db! Average was 88. Level at which sustained exposure may result in hearing loss is 90-95 db. 98 is what a hand drill sound like. So even though the food was outstanding I couldn't wait to get out of the restaurant. But not before eating. The chicken Satay app was not bad, but the whole fish was incredible. It was on special for restaurant week, but I will return if they have it again. The Pork Belly Soup is my favorite dish there, so if there is no whole fish there is a backup plan. On a quiet night though."

  • "We enjoyed Restaurant Week at Bida Manda. The spring rolls were crispy and the lamb with raw papaya salad, well cooked. The macaroon for dessert, while thrifty, was delicious. The outstanding item about the place, however, is the service. We had an excellent waitress, who was there when we needed her but never hovered, and even the owner? came by to ask how things were going. Exceptional."

  • "The service here is top notch, the food interesting and well-presented, and the decor really unique. Since it was restaurant week it was quite busy, and this may have contributed to the din. Our party of four was able to try most of what was offered on the restaurant week prix fixe menu. The curry was wonderful, the papaya salad was fragrant and spicy, and the whole fried fish was impressive. We were not so impressed with the pad thai, finding it to be a bit too sweet, lacking depth, and the seafood somewhat rubbery. Dessert was a large French macaron, light and airy with just the right amount of chewiness and creamy filling. Overall the food is great, with many gluten-free options, and the staff is warm, friendly, and attentive."

  • "The smaller dining room, bamboo-lined walls, and candlelit tables provide a relaxed but upscale atmosphere, with appropriate lighting levels for the selection of unique dishes (you want to see what you're eating!). The service is friendly and helpful. The selection of appetizers and dishes was just large enough to appeal to a variety of palates without being overwhelming, given that each dish, with the exception a few cultural "staples", is a new experience to most. The Pad Thai and chicken curry were excellent. The bar menu was varied, but focused on rum and tequila drinks. Wines were reasonably priced. While the price was a bit higher than most DTRaleigh restaurants ($15-$20), Bida Manda goes the extra distance that most places won't."

  • "I'm usually not one to write reviews, but our visit to this restaurant was such a wonderful experience I had to give feedback. We started our meal with the Crispy Rice Lettuce Wraps.....OMG....so delicious!! For my main course, I had Green Papaya Salad with grilled sea bass.....absolutely delectable. And then to top it all off, it was my birthday :-) and the server brought out a complimentary 'trio plate' of desserts. Needless to say, the desserts, like the other dishes did not disappoint either. I will go back again. Service was wonderful, food was superb and the decor of the restaurant...A+. Check it out for yourself."

The appetizers, entrees and desserts are presented attractively and provide more than adequate amounts of food. The space is warm and festive with unusual decorations and always fresh flowers. The whole baked fish makes a spectacular entree. The trio of desserts gives you choices and they are all light and not too filling."

Most recently, I went there with 9 other colleagues, and we were seated immediately and our server was excellent (no easy feat with 10 people!). Try the papaya salad with steak! The pad thai also looked amazing. If you've never tried thai tea, definitely try it with a spicier dish."

  • "This is my favorite restaurant in raleigh. The decor is beautiful, the food is always delicious with interesting ideas and flavors. Only gave it a 4 instead if a 5 this time because if a few things: I tried to make a reservation for 4 instead if two on open table to invite friends, wouldn't let me, then we were seated at a 4 top. The server also rushed us quite a bit. I know it's a busy restaurant, but asking if he can clear my plate when I have a fork to my mouth is not cool in any restaurant. We had the crispy rice rolls for an appetizer, yummy. We shared two entrees.... Pork belly soup (best entree there). And the shrimp and bacon crepe, was a first and last, there is a sauce they use that gives the inside a mushy texture."
