Diner Reviews
  • "Consistent, job well done, my go to restaurant, not flashy or hip, just elegant finely crafted food"

  • "Can lasagne be fluffy and light? OMG YES!!! Been wanting to try it for years but afraid it would be heavy and I would be out of the game for the rest of dinner. I will get it from now on! Incredible. Of course the osso buco was amazing - had to bring some home....it was even better the next day for lunch."

  • "We both loved our dishes, both being on the picky side for no seafood, were limited to a few dishes, the lasagna and pork chop were both equally well prepared. The restuarant is clean but in need of a update feels like stepping into the 80's with the art and wall sconces"

  • "Biba's restaurant is the BEST Italian restaurant in Sacramento. The food is the freshest and made with care and attention to detail. Everyone must eat here!"

  • "The lasagna has a well deserved outstanding reputation. We made sure to go on Thursday as it is only served on Thursday and Friday until they run out. The pasta is perfect and the béchamel sauce is outstanding. Their gorgonzola salad dressing is lighter than you would expect but has a great flavor. Our daughter had the sole which was excellent. The only disappointment was the swordfish. It was a little dry and the texture was a bit off. The service as always was great."

  • "This was a special occasion, a wedding anniversary dinner. The food was very good. I had salmon and he had a veal stew. Both dishes were very good. The atmosphere was very nice; not too noisy until a foursom took the table right next to us. That was toward the end of dinner, so in wasn't too bad. Overall, the service was great and the atmosphere was congenial."

  • "As good as the food was (and I put 5 stars) the service was even better. Our waitress couldn't have been better. Professional, fun, etc. she was everything. Our food from the soups and slads, the lasagna and Carbanara, to the gelatto were first class and fresh."

  • "My wife and I enjoyed an incredible meal at Biba. I saw her on a Martha Stewart show in 2001 and I have been waiting since to go to her resturant. We live in Washington state and had to make a trip to Davis Cal. so it was the perfect opportunity to fullfil my dream. We have travelled most of Europe including France and Italy (twice) and this meal was one of the best meals that we have ever experienced. The service was exceptional and the entire experience was all that we could have expected. To top it off Biba was there and came to our table to speak with us and signed the book that I purchased. She was very gracious and friendly and it was the perfect ending to a lovely evening."

  • "Wonderful evening with every course perfectly done. Best Manhatten ever. Delectable pork."

  • "Another fabulous dining experience at this long time neighborhood favorite. An appetizer of prawn ravioli and gnocchi in a veal ragu sauce were an incredible start. Entrees were equally as good. Always an enjoyable, well prepared dinner with consistently good service."

  • "Only after a charming visit from the proprietress, and being served an incredibly unique and tasty main course did we really warm to this place. The host and service staff were aloof, the ambience a tad stiff, and the appetizer and salad a bit mediocre. The wines by the glass were kind of pedestrian, and we were thoroughly underwhelmed until the pasta course arrived, along with a check in from Biba herself, smoothing out all the rough edges with that confident Italian charm. I ordered what seemed the most unusual dish I could find on the menu -- buckwheat noodles with braised cabbage, potatoes and fontina. Out of this world. It absolutely erased the bad review I was composing in my head!"

  • "Biba is located in "midtown" Sacramento, near the hospital. The exterior looks like some kind of European half timbered cottage. The greeting station is in the bar; the dining room is huge and open; with pale beige and yellow decor. The large open room is vibrant and noisy. The 10 layer lasagne was everything we expected. although it arrived before we had even finished our prosecco cocktails. The romaine salad and fish dishes were wonderful and the desserts were outrageous - the creamiest gelato ever and the zuccotto fiorentino, a heavenly chocolate covered dome of pound cake filled with whipped cream and nuts. Interesting wine list. Service wasn't peffect but it was friendly. For 2 visitors to Sacramento, it was a pleasant evening."

  • "It's a lovely place with terrific service, so I can see why it gets high ratings. But honestly, the food, while good, is not that special. Their Lattuga Romana con Pignoli e Gorgonzola was just your basic Caesar with cheesier dressing; their gnocchi was decent, just not melt-in-your-mouth; their duck was as good as a couple other places, though the cherries seemed superfluous. This is our second time, and once again, I came with high expectations and left without raving. (The breadsticks are the exception--they're heavenly!)"

  • "We chose Biba as it was our friends anniversary and we anted to take them to an Italian restaurant. Our friend Giuseppe is as Italian as they come so it was a risk. He can be very critical, But in this case he Loved it. Top marks for food an d service. would go again."

  • "We've gone to Biba's mostly for special occasions: birthday's and anniversaries over the past twelve years. The restaurant never falters. Service is impeccable, food is superb, and Mrs. Caggiano (Biba) is a gracious, warm host. Her wait staff is made up of professionals who have worked there a long time. The quality shows each time we visit. Biba's is a wonderful restaurant for anyone wanting a very special dinner. I say "anyone" because Biba's is not the least bit pretentious. It is warm, thoughtful and generous. Just as you'd expect at a home - or restaurant - in Italy."

  • "My wife and I were expecting very good service, excellent food and an exceptional wine list. All of our expectations were met and exceeded. Our server was an Italian who was well-versed in the menu and the wine list. She was attentive without lingering or forgetting us. The Lasagne was unbelievable, according to my wife. So light and creamy! I ordered the lamb shanks with polenta and they were delicious, very meaty and tender. We opted for a split tiramisou and were glad we did it as it was a large slice. Brewed coffee to finish the meal and we were "in hog heaven", Italian style!"

  • "We went to Biba the first time for our anniversary celebration. The food was amazing -- flavorful without being in your face, rich but light. It was the best Italian food I've ever eaten, and the service was very good. They were attentive without hovering. While we brought our own wine, we did peruse the wine list, and they have quite a good selection. I'd highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "I took a friend to Biba's for a birthday lunch and we had a great time. I had requested a quiet table and we were escorted to a nice corner table--which was perfect. Our waiter was excellent: knowledgeable, helpful, and provided excellent service. He really went out of his way to make our experience enjoyable. We shared an appetizer but the waiter had it split on two plates--which was very nice of him. It really was a perfect meal and our waiter was a big part of that."

  • "Seasonal, fresh menu. Fabulous salad with fennel, arugula, citrus and goat cheese. Perfect calamari appetizer, excellent portion size. We had Biba's famous lasagna, and the seasonal beet ravioli with asparagus. Every bite was fantastic. Beautiful ambiance, excellent service. Biba was in dining room, stopping and chatting with diners. Highly recommend."

  • "We personally can't afford Biba too often, but she and her restaurant never fail to delight us. It's like visiting Emilia/Romagna and Piemonte all over again without the cost of airfare and lodging."

  • "My husband and I love this place. We have been coming to Biba's for over 20 years and the food and service have been consistently a cut above other restaurants. Our only complaint (and the first one ever) is a waiter we have never had who served us that night. He is young, and he may be a newer employee, but he is not as attentive and timely with drinks as the more seasoned personnel. In time he will most likely come up to the level of the other wait staff."

  • "Another meal at Biba adds up to a wonderful experience. Quiet, bright surroundings are relaxing and welcoming. The various wines we all had were excellent. Everyone enjoyed their meals thoroughly - no caveats at all. The smoked salmon and frisee were superb - ravioli like you were in Italy, salads beautifully dressed, pork and parmesan mashed potatoes perfectly cooked. It was like being in a dream, between the impeccable service and the perfect food. Harmony, pleasure and relaxation were the hallmarks of the day. Biba, please never close."

  • "I have been visiting Biba's for a number of years. I have never been disappointed. The food is wonderful, simple with fresh ingredients. You can see Biba's attention to detail in each dish and the impeccable service. The servers are knowledgeable and able to recommend appropriate wines. The wine list is ample with excellent California and Italian wines available. The wine list is reasonably priced for a restaurant of this quality."

  • "I have loved this expensive joint for decades. It's just that kind of place, I guess. The food is lovely and well presented. It's not the BEST Italian food you'll ever taste, but it is uncompromisingly good. The prices are steep. The dining room is nicely appointed, clean, and warm. Street parking is not too hard, but reservations take some planning, because Biba's is in demand. If you're a vegetarian, this is not the place for you. It's a meat and potatoes joint, with lots of style. The gnocchi is divine and the Osso Bucco, out of this world. The clientele is gray-headed, polite and pleasure to dine with. Her desserts a wonderful and the wine list well-chosen. On top of that, Biba will saunter over to your table and say," Bona sera.""

  • "I have to say that Biba is one of my favorite restaurants. I was there on a Thursday for lunch and had the lasagna. I swear no one makes it better. Had the Beet salad, always yummy, and gelato too. I was full for the rest of the day. Food was great and so was the service. I highly recommend Biba!"

  • "I had ordered the Lasagna & my husband, the Pancetta Stuffed Ravioli. The waitress came back and informed me they were out of Lasagna and suggested the Bolognese. The waitress informed me in the future if I wanted the Lasagna and we were going to be dining late to preorder the dish and they would have it waiting for me. When the dinners arrived I can tell you I was not disappointed in the recommendation, the first taste of my Bolognese took me back to Italy. It was perfect. My husband enjoyed every bite of his dish and some of mine. We look forward to going back. This is not an establishment if you are looking for a quite night. The way the restaurant is set up the dining room was quite noisy."

  • "The restaurant was terrific--food, ambience and service--very, very good. In a time when it's very easy to spend $100 on a very mediocre meal with mediocre service in less than mediocre surroundings, it's a pleasure to go to a restaurant where everything is as it should be and you leave feeling good about going to dinner."

  • "This is an older restaurant with a fine reputation. But its ambience and food are not up to par with today's better restaurants. Very unimaginative in all respects, and very average cuisine."

  • "We met the celebrated Biba Caggiano herself at Biba's on Capitol Avenue in Sacramento, just before Valentine's Day. Biba was easy to recognize, as a longtime TV personality, but it was nice to meet her--she circulated and greeted each diner. She was keeping a wary eye out, supervising the quality of the dining experience. She has the respect of her staff, which she rewards by encouraging rapport. She promotes the sense of "family" for all concerned. As for our order? We had to try the famous ten-layer lasagna. Our waiter was sure they were out of lasagna, but found that our order had been placed just before the "we've run out" stage. We got our lasagnas, which lived up to their legend: rich but delicate, stuffed with finely ground beef."

  • "Our meal of steak for the lady and sea bass for the gentleman was prepared as requested. We started with a Cesar salad which we split and that too was fresh and the dressing just right, not over done. The wait staff were vert attentive and gave us time to enjoy our wine before taking our order. We. Appreciated that the owner made the rounds and greeted everyone and shared her background and the history of Biba."

  • "Everything -- from the first course (gnocchi and ravioli), to the Lasagne Verde, to the Spaghetti Carbonara, to the Veal Milanese, and the cappuccino cheesecake -- was fantastic. Our server was very attentive and helpful in selecting the courses as well as the wine. Definitely one of my "Top 10" dining experiences, ever!"

  • "Went with another couple to Biba's to celebrate 2 birthday's (my wife's, and the husband from the other couple). Fantastic time all around. We arrived at 6:00, intending to have a drink at the bar before our 7:00 reservation - unfortunately, the bar was packed, so we ordered and stood for a moment..... but they were able to seat us at a table immediately. Appetizer (calamari) was solid; salads (beet salad, Caesar) were very good...... but the main courses were outstanding. 2 of us had the 10-layer lasagna; scrumptious. Our party also ordered the osso buco, and the filet - also delicious. Finished off with desserts - cheesecake and zoccotto, which were also tremendous. Service and pacing were also excellent. We'll definitely go back."
