Betony, named after an herb in the mint family known for its healing qualities, is a Modern American restaurant overseen by Executive Chef Bryce Shuman (the former Executive Sous Chef of Eleven Madison Park) and General Manager Eamon Rockey (formerly of Eleven Madison Park, Atera, and Aska ). The restaurant, which is located a block off of Fifth Avenue, features soaring ceilings, contemporary photos of New York City street scenes, a 35-seat bar and lounge and 85-seat dining room.   • "I was so excited to try Betony. Eleven Madison park is one of my absolute favorites. I also love the Nomad. Betony was so disappointing. The food was cold, flavorless and just plain bad. If I'm going to spend $50 on 6 pieces of corn agnolotti with black truffles, I except them to come to the table warm and get a decent shaving. The short ribs were so fatty and the foie gras was tasteless. I strongly suggest finding a different restaurant."

  • "We celebrated our 6th wedding anniversary here recently and the staff made it so special. Excemplary service and exceptional food. I had skate in a Thai green sauce (still talking about it) and my wife had the pulled pork - amazing. We did a wine pairing and the selections were new to us and perfectly balanced the meal. They gave us the best table, a special welcome at the door, an anniversary card, free dessert. The general manager came to our table to thank us and wish us a happy anniversary too. They went above and beyond. The GM and chef are ex-11 Madison Park and you can tell. This restaurant was very special."

  • "The lobster roll and scallops Hors d'oeuvre were amazing. I had the summer squash with goat cheese. This was served with a little soup strained from the goat cheese? It was amazing. Firm squash with tangy "soup". For main course we had the skate wing with thai curry sauce which again was very nicely done. Why not 5 star? My fellow diners said the mackerel was so so and the pig terrine was not v good. The dessert has a theme concept. Apricot prepared 3 ways. Strawberry done 3 ways. We ordered these 2 and they were both unremarkable. The roasted chicken tAste good but the stark presentation of a sliver of chicken on an empty white plate leaves me longing."

  • "Betony has a nice atmosphere and good food, but it lacks that certain something that would make jt a truely excellent restaurant. Food was somewhat salty and fell flat. Also everyone eating there looks like a total slob--not what I want to see on my romantic date."

  • "My husband and I had one of the best dining experiences we've ever had in NYC at Betony on Thursday night. I have a gluten intolerance, and was told they could modify everything on the menu (expect one brand-new dish)! Everything was creative, spectacularly delicious, and I honestly couldn't believe it was gluten-free, it tasted so similar to gluten. The quiet ambiance was a nice change from the usual midtown pace. We loved everything about dinner and hope to be back soon!"

  • "Here's a three-star restaurant (New York Times) that lives up to its rating. The short ribs were heavenly, best I've had in a very long time. The side dish of creamy mashed potatoes was irresistible. I had a glass of pinot noir, which like the rest of the by-the-glass wine selection, was very good though pricey. The service was nearly impeccable and the atmosphere elegant but casual. I'd go back."

  • "We were really looking forward to dining at Betony, but were very disappointed in our meal. The lobster rolls were tasteless and the hot foie gras was just OK. The lobster entree and skate entree were both mediocre. We were first ushered upstairs to eat, where it was deadly, so we asked for a table downstairs (lots of empty ones). Our server was nice and we shared a good bottle of wine. The best dish was the bread and butter. Betony made the list of best new restaurants in NYC, but it did not live up to the hype."

  • "My wife and I had our 15th wedding anniversary supper at Betony. Our experience was great and we enjoyed ourselves. We had chosen this restaurant as we were in New York for the weekend and did not regret our choice. Service was especially amazing with just enough attention to satisfy our needs without being too much to be disturbing. Thank-you for this wonderful evening!"

  • "Betony is a character fine dining restaurant - brick walls and limed carved wood interior. The menu is 3 to 4 courses (depending on desert) and the food is both interesting and exquisite, full of flavour and beautifully executed. The staff are knowledgeable, efficient and incredibly polite. We had a thoroughly enjoyable evening, and will certainly be back with foodie friends who enjoy a good dining experience and civilised conversation without being drowned out by your neighbours or thumping muzak! I really don't understand how anyone could leave feeling hungry as the portions were perfect - just don't expect mountains of carbs with your mains! It would also be a good place to pop in for a nice cocktail at the bar in elegant surroundings."

  • "My wife and I were in New York City for one day and chose Betony--unfortunately, it was a Sunday evening.We chose Betony because of the NY Times article.We were greeted by a very formal host---his first comment was "...are the two of you able to walk up steps as we have a quiet table on the second floor."Neither of us had a cane or a visible physical imparement and, initially, we thought the comment was a joke.Our waiter asked us if we had any dietary restrictions-ten minutes later he returned and asked the very same question.I asked if the lamb was from Colorado; waiter response: "I will ask the chef."30 minutes later-no response.Water glass was not refilled nor was the terrific butter-yogurt replaced. Huge disappointment!"

The combination of ingredients (excellent quality), and menu plate titles seemed to focus more on pushing whimsical than balance within originality.   • "Betony fully deserves all the great press they have been getting. This is an outstanding restaurant. Don't miss the foie gras, the hot version with kale leaves. Also, definitely try the lobster roll. The food is innovative, tasty and beautifully presented. The service is impeccable, with the perfect balance of professionalism and warmth. The sommelier that helped us was wonderful. I brought my friend for her birthday and every single person we came in contact with wished her a happy birthday. Details like this matter a great deal. Very importantly, you can actually have a conversation in this place as they understand that conviviality is part of the dining experience. It takes guts these days to keep the noise level down! Go now!"

  • "This restaurant is amazing! The food is terrific, the service impeccable, and the drinks creative (try the milk punch-it's a sin not to)! The decor of the restaurant is the best I have seen in a long time-I loved everything about it. So why then did the owners/investors/designers choose such unbearably uncomfortable seating? The banquette and the velvet chairs are too deep and too soft- really uncomfortable. It is easy to overlook these little details for the sake of the perfect"look" but they really affect the diner's experience and detract from otherwise amazing food."

  • "First off, I want to make it clear that I had a great experience at Betony. The food was good and the service was great. The rolls might be some of the best bread I've ever had. That said my only complaint was that for a $200 meal (for two people), the entree portions were a big meager. My girlfriend and I found ourselves getting a second dinner a few hours later. All-in-all though, very nice place and recommended."

  • "Our recent visit to Betony for a birthday celebration was a mixed experience. The menu is very limited. The chicken liver toasts were delicious; the mackeral, which was "meh". The skate and short ribs were both delicious, but the short ribs portion was tiny even for those accustomed to small portions. My husband, a modest eater, was left hungry. The dinner roll was wonderful, but the desserts leave a great deal to be desired. The butterscotch was delicious, but the assortment (marcaron, taffy and chocolate) was a crime -- tasteless. The sommellier was wonderful."

Wines by the glass pricey. Please improve your selections for those who need to order by the glass (Ugh, not everyone drinks!!). Overall, Bravo. Thanks for a lovely evening. I want this restaurant to succeed."

  • "We went for a birthday celebration... and I loved the romantic ambience... originally we were seated on the upper level - but we found the table a bit claustrophobic... so we asked to be moved down to the main level... which was fine. The chef made a real effort with inventive, well prepared food. The fried pickled ramps were exceptional... as were many of the sauces. I had black bass which was quite good... my partner liked the chicken... very moist. The only big miss was the dessert... we had the chocolate (something or other) and it did not taste nor look very good... but all in all, the food was worth the trip and the price was fair for this level of cooking... The service was excellent - attentive but not overbearing service."

  • "A combination of eclectic dining and a modern take on basic dishes (the chicken for example). Very nice execution, great flavors and interesting twists. Portions, especially on the "first courses" are small and pricey... these courses are like nibbles or bar food... but very eclectic. Lobster rolls are nothing like you'd expect. The fried pickles are a must. Service is professional and polished. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED"

  • "I read that it was one of the best new restaurant, so I went to try. but except the short ribs, nothing is impressive. the chicken liver snack is fine, but the frog legs you could not guess what it is. plain. fava bean salad is bad, just vinegar taste. lobster entry is boring. I don't know what's the fuss about this place. I'm disappointed."

  • "Betony is a gem. Our meal was delicious, relaxed and beautifully presented. I recommend highly the marinated scallop hors d'oeuvres, delicate but extremely flvorful. We would have been happy with a meal of them! But then we would have missed out on the hot foie gras, which is not to be missed. The ham hock consommé that it comes with is unbelievably rich in flavor. The roasted chicken might be a misnomer, especially if your are expecting crackling crisp skin and pull-apart meat. This chicken is cooked sous-vide, which means the texture of the meat is completely different from chicken cooked any other way. Incredibly good."

  • "First time at this restaurant. Try their signature cocktail w/tequila - outstanding. The menu is broken down into 3 parts with only 6 or 7 choices each - small plate, appetizer and main course. It is recommended to take one of each. Desserts are simply named (e.g. 'chocolate'). Everything was excellent, you cannot go wrong. The wine list mostly boutique wines from all over the world. We'll be eating here again."
