Betony, named after an herb in the mint family known for its healing qualities, is a Modern American restaurant overseen by Executive Chef Bryce Shuman (the former Executive Sous Chef of Eleven Madison Park) and General Manager Eamon Rockey (formerly of Eleven Madison Park, Atera, and Aska ). The restaurant, which is located a block off of Fifth Avenue, features soaring ceilings, contemporary photos of New York City street scenes, a 35-seat bar and lounge and 85-seat dining room.   • "I am so happy we found Betony as it was not only in the neighborhood we visited but the food was unusual, delicious and inventive. The moment the amuse bouche arrived I was hooked. The tuna appetizer was as beautiful as it was fun to eat and I highly suggest a try. By now, the chicken is a well publicized entree and it lived up to its chatter. I would suggest that anyone who, as we, wants a lovely dinner in calm surroundings offered by an excellent chef, join in the party and go to Betony. Who knows, if you decide to go, you may be seated next to some celebrity chef from far off places like Copenhagen or even me the next time around."

  • "If you can't get into Eleven Madison or Nomad, certainly the food just as good at Betony. Excellent service and amazing cocktails ,especially the Milk Cocktails. Careful molecular cuisine, but not over the top. Decor could use some help as designed over the top for a Russian restuarant. Service was charming and no attitude, though it was the summer."

  • "We had an amazing meal. Amazing fried picles to start. I had a wonderful salad - not exotic but just plain excellent. One of our diners had the halibut which was terrific, another the chicken and I had the outstanding sweet corn ravioli with fresh black truffles generously shaved on top at the table. Both desserts that we had - the peach and the chocolate- were also excellent as was the mint lavender tea. Service was great as well. All in all exceptional."

  • "Two of us ordered hors d'ouevres and one ordered an appetizer. It seems like the restaurant's policy is to encourage people to order an hors d'ouevres, an appetizer and an entree. The waiter brought the hors d'ouevres first and I didn't get my appetizer til later. My husband's grilled short rib was delicious and the poached lobster was good. The latter came with a creamy sauce and a huge bunch of dill. The waiter poured some of the sauce over the dill to "infuse" the sauce but then promptly removed the dill. I should have asked him to give me a doggy bag for it. The wait staff was gracious but the service was very slow (we were there on a Sunday at 6:30) We would have had coffee but didn't think it was worth the wait."

  • "After the second visit to Betony, with 2 friends (who came in from New Jersey just to eat there) I find the experience from every measurable level just brilliant. And the food just takes over your pleasure centers for the time you are there, and keeps them revved in a continuous state of gastronomic ecstasy. I would go here every day to have meals like these memorable ones. Wine list also was rather solid and intelligent with such a great and unique selection. I will continue to bring friends and family here.. very easy to make Betony fans. Just enter through the front door!"

  • "The food was outstanding. The marinated scallops appetizer was probably the best dish. My wife ordered two hor d'oeuvres and an appetizer . I ordered a salad and a main course. We asked that her courses be spaced out and served with my courses but that couldn't be done. The hor d'oeuvres had to be served immediately and the appetizer served with my salad so she had no courses when I was eating my main course. Overall the food is very well prepared with top ingredients."

  • "Absolutely Perfect wine list: The usual heavy hitters (CalCabs, Bordeaux) alongside some esoteric gems as well. Lovely somelier made our evening. Haitian gentleman. Rhones are esp strong. My guest enjoyed his foie appetizer and chicken app. Short ribs I had were v v good, but a bit fatty. Crisp service. Will return soon."

  • "What Le Bernardin is to seafood, Betony is to red meat. Five stars to the foie gras appetizer and the lamb entree. We felt like we've never really tasted lamb until now. Reminiscent of fabulous meals we've had at Les Papilles in Paris. The only Con is the layout of the place. Its "L" shape makes it hard to feel that whole "among the people" thing. Great for romantics who want to be off in a corner. Plenty of those. However please DO dine here. It's lovely. We're coming back asap."

  • "Aside from the host who greeted us and the young woman who served the tap water, the service was dreadful. So many servers and suits wandering around, the latter appeared to do nothing. One creepy guy took our drink and food orders. He forced us to listen to him explain the menu even though we told him we were not ready to order. One drink was served 10 minutes before we could order another drink (because he never came back to our table). The food was very good, but we won't be back. How interesting it was to read about the two head honchos in Eater just after eating at Betony. You guys have a lot to do to be the kind of restaurant you claim to want."

  • "We were enthusiastically welcomed and seated promptly. Soaring ceilings, mirror, dark woods, beautiful lighting, and comfortable seating. The staff was efficient, friendly and helpful. We shared several starters, including the Australian truffles, which were personally served by chef, and were out of this world! The main courses were excellent. My short rib was nicely marbellized and very tender. Every one raved about their selections: tile fish, poached lobster, and skate. The desserts - apricot chevre cardamom and the sweet corn blueberry and basil in particular were very good. The preparations are inventive, but not weirdly so. Prices are somewhat steep, but the experience is well worth it."

The support staff was amazing but our server seemed bored to tears and lackluster! If you can get past their uppity superiority complex then you might have a great evening!"

We went back to restaurants we know well: Cafe Boulud, Le Bernardin and Jean-Georges; all lived up to our high expectations. The last night was open and based on the advice of some foodie friends we decided to try something new and give Betony a try. We were not disappointed! This restaurant offered as much pleasure as those other top-tier restaurants. The food was more experimental but equally delicious. A stand-out course was the luscious Sweet Corn Agnolotti with Australian Black Truffles which Bryce Shuman (executive chef) shaved at the table for us. The service, wine choices and decor were as good as the food. We will return!"

  • "I've been going to 11 Madison for ages, even way before Sex and the City filmed a scene there. So when I learned that its former chef opened a new restaurant, upon the urging of good reviews from Adam Platt and Pete Wells, I went last week. I totally get 11 Madison but I got lost in Betony. What Mr. Wells thought was heavenly in the foie gras with broth, I thought was foie gras with dishwater. The amuse bouche of vegetable puree dunked in liquid nitrogen tasted more like liquid nitrogen (isn't time to move on from this and sou vide?). Maybe I need a re-education of my palate to suit the new trends dictated by these food critics but then everyone raved about Corton as well. The service bordered on sanctimonious but for that food? Oh well."

  • "Opening service was fine, hors d'oeuvre were good, mains were good. An unexpected amuse-bouche (chilled evaporated gazpacho) was unexpectedly salty, which was noted to the waitstaff. The lettuce salad was then incredibly salty and was sent back. It was ultimately removed from the bill in advance without comment, which is as it should be. The sommelier was engaging and helpful with the wines, offering tastings, which was great. However, when a beer top up was applied to the glass, it was incorrectly poured (Belgian beer), overflowed, and spilled. It was cleaned up, but a fresh beer was not provided as should be standard in such cases and the (same) glass was returned sticky. Overall a disappointing experience. Would not recommend."

  • "A poor excuse for an up scale restaurant. The menu is not only brief, but does not adequately describe the ridiculously small portions. The waitstaff in describing the entrees gloss over the most important points about the food. I had family from out of town and I wanted to show them the best of NY. It turned out to be an embarrassing evening."

  • "Had 8:30 reservation and was right on time still had to wait 15 minutes and they gave us a bar table. Over all impression of the staff was pretentious. It seems they are one dog who's been stroked and praised so much they forgot how to play fetch. The half cooked mackerel dish with chewy skin and grass clippings of dill with tomato seeds dish was highly regrettable to say the least. The short rib was awesome. A bit small but very tasty and composed very well. Also the desserts were very clever all using savory unusually well. Particularly the apricot dish with the watercress."

  • "We were a group of 6 for dinner and we had a sampling of appetizers to share. I loved that they adjusted the serving portion to ensure each person had a taste. Everything was delicious. We liked that the food was imaginative and creative, with interesting and surprising flavors. For dinner, I had the lobster, which was excellent with a creamy sauce and dill. My companions loved their lamb. The wine list was varied and we were glad to find some reasonably priced bottles of Sancerre and Riesling. We also liked the surprise palate cleansers like the gazpacho that was practically a snow cone (very inventive) and the strawberry sorbet right before dessert was perfect."
