Diner Reviews
  • "Hey, Betony, you're not Per Se or Le Bernardin. You don't have the credibility to charge people $25 a head for cancelling a reservation that day. Yes, I had a 7pm reservation that I made on open table. We tried to cancel the night before at night, but the open table system said we had to call the restaurant. We did when it opened. THey said they'd charge. Unacceptable in my opinion. I don't care what the sytem says, I've had to cancel day of with places that hold with a credit card, and I almost never have been charged. I'll never go back again, even though the food is quite good."

  • "The whole experience was absolutely great. Starting from the discrete sign outside, the stunning decor with many details, the elegance of the place and the great service. The best part...the food. Totally not what I expected for certain degree but absolutely wonderful. A must go"

  • "My daughter and I had dinner at Betony to celebrate my birthday. Each course was exceptional, we enjoyed excellent wines by the glass, and our server was friendly and very professional. I especially appreciated an amazing vegetarian entree - a deconstructed Swiss chard lasagne. A wonderful dining experience!"

  • "it is a hard act to follow, touted itself as a offshoot of 11 madison. unfortunately it failed to meet any expectations of any kind. the portions were small, food was overpriced for what it was and the service sublimed. expected more and even if this was pub food, it wouldn't have passed the grade. skip it"

  • "We were in New York for to enjoy some of the best food in North America. We went back to restaurants we know well: Cafe Boulud, Le Bernardin and Jean-Georges; all lived up to our high expectations. The last night was open and based on the advice of some foodie friends we decided to try something new and give Betony a try. We were not disappointed! This restaurant offered as much pleasure as those other top-tier restaurants. The food was more experimental but equally delicious. A stand-out course was the luscious Sweet Corn Agnolotti with Australian Black Truffles which Bryce Shuman (executive chef) shaved at the table for us. The service, wine choices and decor were as good as the food. We will return!"

  • "I've been going to 11 Madison for ages, even way before Sex and the City filmed a scene there. So when I learned that its former chef opened a new restaurant, upon the urging of good reviews from Adam Platt and Pete Wells, I went last week. I totally get 11 Madison but I got lost in Betony. What Mr. Wells thought was heavenly in the foie gras with broth, I thought was foie gras with dishwater. The amuse bouche of vegetable puree dunked in liquid nitrogen tasted more like liquid nitrogen (isn't time to move on from this and sou vide?). Maybe I need a re-education of my palate to suit the new trends dictated by these food critics but then everyone raved about Corton as well. The service bordered on sanctimonious but for that food? Oh well."

  • "Opening service was fine, hors d'oeuvre were good, mains were good. An unexpected amuse-bouche (chilled evaporated gazpacho) was unexpectedly salty, which was noted to the waitstaff. The lettuce salad was then incredibly salty and was sent back. It was ultimately removed from the bill in advance without comment, which is as it should be. The sommelier was engaging and helpful with the wines, offering tastings, which was great. However, when a beer top up was applied to the glass, it was incorrectly poured (Belgian beer), overflowed, and spilled. It was cleaned up, but a fresh beer was not provided as should be standard in such cases and the (same) glass was returned sticky. Overall a disappointing experience. Would not recommend."

  • "A poor excuse for an up scale restaurant. The menu is not only brief, but does not adequately describe the ridiculously small portions. The waitstaff in describing the entrees gloss over the most important points about the food. I had family from out of town and I wanted to show them the best of NY. It turned out to be an embarrassing evening."

  • "Bryce Shuman, executive chef, shows his brilliance in abundance at Betony- food is extraordinary and elevated by an outstanding waitstaff - the garish, overwrought decor serves as an unintentional yet stark contrast to the elegant dishes."

  • "My wife and I went for a last date night before the birth of our third. Food was delicious, not a flaw or mistep to be found."

  • "Sunday evening reservation. Food was solid. Service was very poor. 20 plus minutes for cocktails to show after they were ordered. Up to 30 minutes between courses. Waiter was insufferable."

  • "All food and drink excellent (specialty drinks and wine, scallops, hot foie gras, rolls and bread sticks, short ribs, desserts) except for main course lobster. Tasted great but uneven in tenderness and texture. Honest about that with server; was taken off check! Will definitely return."

  • "Had 8:30 reservation and was right on time still had to wait 15 minutes and they gave us a bar table. Over all impression of the staff was pretentious. It seems they are one dog who's been stroked and praised so much they forgot how to play fetch. The half cooked mackerel dish with chewy skin and grass clippings of dill with tomato seeds dish was highly regrettable to say the least. The short rib was awesome. A bit small but very tasty and composed very well. Also the desserts were very clever all using savory unusually well. Particularly the apricot dish with the watercress."

  • "We were a group of 6 for dinner and we had a sampling of appetizers to share. I loved that they adjusted the serving portion to ensure each person had a taste. Everything was delicious. We liked that the food was imaginative and creative, with interesting and surprising flavors. For dinner, I had the lobster, which was excellent with a creamy sauce and dill. My companions loved their lamb. The wine list was varied and we were glad to find some reasonably priced bottles of Sancerre and Riesling. We also liked the surprise palate cleansers like the gazpacho that was practically a snow cone (very inventive) and the strawberry sorbet right before dessert was perfect."

  • "I was so excited to try Betony. Eleven Madison park is one of my absolute favorites. I also love the Nomad. Betony was so disappointing. The food was cold, flavorless and just plain bad. If I'm going to spend $50 on 6 pieces of corn agnolotti with black truffles, I except them to come to the table warm and get a decent shaving. The short ribs were so fatty and the foie gras was tasteless. I strongly suggest finding a different restaurant."

  • "We celebrated our 6th wedding anniversary here recently and the staff made it so special. Excemplary service and exceptional food. I had skate in a Thai green sauce (still talking about it) and my wife had the pulled pork - amazing. We did a wine pairing and the selections were new to us and perfectly balanced the meal. They gave us the best table, a special welcome at the door, an anniversary card, free dessert. The general manager came to our table to thank us and wish us a happy anniversary too. They went above and beyond. The GM and chef are ex-11 Madison Park and you can tell. This restaurant was very special."

  • "Betony has a nice atmosphere and good food, but it lacks that certain something that would make jt a truely excellent restaurant. Food was somewhat salty and fell flat. Also everyone eating there looks like a total slob--not what I want to see on my romantic date."

  • "The lobster roll and scallops Hors d'oeuvre were amazing. I had the summer squash with goat cheese. This was served with a little soup strained from the goat cheese? It was amazing. Firm squash with tangy "soup". For main course we had the skate wing with thai curry sauce which again was very nicely done. Why not 5 star? My fellow diners said the mackerel was so so and the pig terrine was not v good. The dessert has a theme concept. Apricot prepared 3 ways. Strawberry done 3 ways. We ordered these 2 and they were both unremarkable. The roasted chicken tAste good but the stark presentation of a sliver of chicken on an empty white plate leaves me longing."

  • "My husband and I had one of the best dining experiences we've ever had in NYC at Betony on Thursday night. I have a gluten intolerance, and was told they could modify everything on the menu (expect one brand-new dish)! Everything was creative, spectacularly delicious, and I honestly couldn't believe it was gluten-free, it tasted so similar to gluten. The quiet ambiance was a nice change from the usual midtown pace. We loved everything about dinner and hope to be back soon!"

  • "Betony is an extraordinary restaurant with great food and great service. Once it's been open long enough to get reviewed by Michelin and Zagat, it will be difficult to get a reservation and likely priced like the other very top Midtowns. We absolutely loved it."

  • "Here's a three-star restaurant (New York Times) that lives up to its rating. The short ribs were heavenly, best I've had in a very long time. The side dish of creamy mashed potatoes was irresistible. I had a glass of pinot noir, which like the rest of the by-the-glass wine selection, was very good though pricey. The service was nearly impeccable and the atmosphere elegant but casual. I'd go back."

  • "We were really looking forward to dining at Betony, but were very disappointed in our meal. The lobster rolls were tasteless and the hot foie gras was just OK. The lobster entree and skate entree were both mediocre. We were first ushered upstairs to eat, where it was deadly, so we asked for a table downstairs (lots of empty ones). Our server was nice and we shared a good bottle of wine. The best dish was the bread and butter. Betony made the list of best new restaurants in NYC, but it did not live up to the hype."

  • "Betony is a character fine dining restaurant - brick walls and limed carved wood interior. The menu is 3 to 4 courses (depending on desert) and the food is both interesting and exquisite, full of flavour and beautifully executed. The staff are knowledgeable, efficient and incredibly polite. We had a thoroughly enjoyable evening, and will certainly be back with foodie friends who enjoy a good dining experience and civilised conversation without being drowned out by your neighbours or thumping muzak! I really don't understand how anyone could leave feeling hungry as the portions were perfect - just don't expect mountains of carbs with your mains! It would also be a good place to pop in for a nice cocktail at the bar in elegant surroundings."

  • "My wife and I were in New York City for one day and chose Betony--unfortunately, it was a Sunday evening. We chose Betony because of the NY Times article. We were greeted by a very formal host---his first comment was "...are the two of you able to walk up steps as we have a quiet table on the second floor."Neither of us had a cane or a visible physical imparement and, initially, we thought the comment was a joke. Our waiter asked us if we had any dietary restrictions-ten minutes later he returned and asked the very same question.I asked if the lamb was from Colorado; waiter response: "I will ask the chef."30 minutes later-no response.Water glass was not refilled nor was the terrific butter-yogurt replaced. Huge disappointment!"

  • "My wife and I had our 15th wedding anniversary supper at Betony. Our experience was great and we enjoyed ourselves. We had chosen this restaurant as we were in New York for the weekend and did not regret our choice. Service was especially amazing with just enough attention to satisfy our needs without being too much to be disturbing. Thank-you for this wonderful evening!"

  • "Incongruent is the best word to describe the experience. The combination of ingredients (excellent quality), and menu plate titles seemed to focus more on pushing whimsical than balance within originality. The service attempted to reach high caliber though robotic and failure of the basics. If they "pull it together" could be a sure bet."

  • "A little disappointed - the chefs are from Eleven Madison Park and I thought the food didn't deliver. The crackers and bread and super salty. Ambiance is nice, but the food was a bust."

  • "Very nice experience, brought down by its location in (corporate) mid-town. Not the fault of the restaurant of course!"

  • "This restaurant is amazing! The food is terrific, the service impeccable, and the drinks creative (try the milk punch-it's a sin not to)! The decor of the restaurant is the best I have seen in a long time-I loved everything about it. So why then did the owners/investors/designers choose such unbearably uncomfortable seating? The banquette and the velvet chairs are too deep and too soft- really uncomfortable. It is easy to overlook these little details for the sake of the perfect"look" but they really affect the diner's experience and detract from otherwise amazing food."

  • "Betony fully deserves all the great press they have been getting. This is an outstanding restaurant. Don't miss the foie gras, the hot version with kale leaves. Also, definitely try the lobster roll. The food is innovative, tasty and beautifully presented. The service is impeccable, with the perfect balance of professionalism and warmth. The sommelier that helped us was wonderful. I brought my friend for her birthday and every single person we came in contact with wished her a happy birthday. Details like this matter a great deal. Very importantly, you can actually have a conversation in this place as they understand that conviviality is part of the dining experience. It takes guts these days to keep the noise level down! Go now!"

  • "I am sorry but this did live up to the hype. Strictly for the adventurous foodie. Meager portions at best and flavors that left a lot to be desired. I don't mind the prices but I don't want to leave starving and disappointed. I loved 11 Madison Park pre-circus menu. Not sure what happened when they left and came uptown to 57th St."
