Betony, named after an herb in the mint family known for its healing qualities, is a Modern American restaurant overseen by Executive Chef Bryce Shuman (the former Executive Sous Chef of Eleven Madison Park) and General Manager Eamon Rockey (formerly of Eleven Madison Park, Atera, and Aska ). The restaurant, which is located a block off of Fifth Avenue, features soaring ceilings, contemporary photos of New York City street scenes, a 35-seat bar and lounge and 85-seat dining room.   • "The service at Betony needs to spped up. It was as if there was no communication between the waiter, the bar or the kitchen. Food is very good but I would not go back if they have not improved the service. "

  • "It's interesting that after the noon meeting on the menu, our server answered zero questions about the menu for us and other tables. When I told him I didn't eat fish prepared with meat and asked if the 4 fish dishes were ok he said "they're all fish!" And told me the lobster was a 10$ supplement (clear on menu). Nearby table asked about lettuces and he said "lettuces with dressing." He was so overwhelmed that 15-20 min went by before we ordered dessert from the server who fills water. Thankfully we did because upon exclaiming how delicious he amaranth/maple/banana was he told us a story about its origin. That guy should be the server! People who brought good to table didn't know all the dishes either - new menu? Lunch service?"

  • "A perfect evening at a perfect restaurant. John Mariani of the Virtual Gourmet said this was the best restaurant in NYC and he was right. We had a marvelous dinner of lobster rolls and liver pate for appetizers, a grain salad and fois gras for a starter and lobster for our entree. All were unbelievable. The amuse bouche, which was a carrot soup, was to die for.... What more can we say?"

  • "The early accolades have convinced the staff of this midtown newbie that they are the new stars in town,hardly the case.We were directed to the bar when we arrived on time for our 10:15 reservation and could see a dwindling dining room. Seated 10 minutes later.Restaurant's closing time of 10:30. We were suggested to order from all three columns of the menu. Ordered from two. Lobster rolls, a crunchy, hollow stick, overwhelmed by cream cheese.Same crunchy base for the scallops, sweet,smothered in lemon. Dinner was adequate (lobster, short ribs) but lacked any acidic or vegetable components. Manager looked over his shoulder as we left without a thank you or even a nod. Awkward service bar where the staff wispered and stared at customers."

  • "The food at Betony is undeniably some of the best in the city. We ordered an extra plate for almost every course and were in heaven. Highlights included the Chicken Liver Mousse, Scallop appetizer, Roasted Chicken, and Ravioli. Dessert was a special treat with the most memorable being the sweets sampling plate. The root beer macaroon was jaw dropping. The ambiance was fun and hip with a high class flare. It had an active bar for a restaurant whose centerpiece, to my mind, is the food. It was a lively room, but by no means did one have to speak especially loudly. The service was great. Our waiter was attentive, seemed very with the times, and was excellent at giving insightful recommendations. High praise for Betony!"

  • "For this second visit to Betony, I brought three of my colleagues for lunch as a treat to thank them for their contributions. Every dish was spectacular (especially the 'buttery pillows' and the skate) and the service was excellent--well-informed about the food but very friendly, down-to-earth, charming and even humorous. Needless to say, my colleagues were very impressed (and they are not easily impressed!). Thank you again, Betony."

  • "Betony is a wonderful addition to the restaurant scene around Carnegie Hall. The staff is warm and accommodating and tries to accommodate all your needs. The service is attentive and impeccable. The food is interesting, tasty and beautifully plated. The selections from the hors d'ourves and the appetizers are great for sharing and sampling. The tables are nicely spaced and the dining room is beautiful with its woods and decor. It is quiet enough to easily have a conversation. Quiet jazz was heard from the bar area which was relaxing without being overbearing. Desrves the 3 stars it was awarded."

  • "We had a fantastic experience at Betony. From the Maitre d'hotel to the waiters everybody is incredibly nice and professional. We also appreciated the interior design of the restaurant, a mix of old brick walls and modern sleek black furniture at the bar. We ordered the poached monkfish and cruciferous salad for appetizers, followed by the excellent duck breast and the grilled skate with cauliflower purée. For dessert, we shared the butterscotch biscuit with ice-cream."

  • "Food is overall salty, even table bread.. We ordered robster roll and a kind of salad as a appetizer and chicken and duck as an entree. I could not enjoy their lobster roll. It was my big mistake... Service was bad. They dont know what to do. Just moving like a robot. They ask us a question as usual," what do you like?" Then we reply and they don't answer/suggest any.. It was kind a funny. So its okay. But if they charge that much, I feel like they need to improve.. Cacktails are very good."

  • "Betony's dining room is stunning; definitely one of the top two or three restaursnt's I have been to in terms of aesthetics. While the food was not mind blowing, it was quite delicious and enjoyable. The beef tenderloin melted in my mouth and I loved the accompaniments (various types and preparations of onions and potatoes). The ginger/passion fruit dessert was excellent as well with the cilantro panna cotta lending a nice savory balance. Service was attentive but just a bit stiff; definitely more Per Se than EMP despite Chef Shuman and the manager hailing from the later."

My only problem with the restaurant is the wine list. There are many wonderful bottles of wine that come at a reasonable price, but Betony seemed to have none."

The foie gras bonbons leave you wondering "how do they do that"--yield to the temptation-order another round. The lobster rolls: Maine-meets-Thailand-meets-the-south-of-France. The salads, entrees, and desserts orchestrate 3 main ingredients that harmonize most creatively, tastily, and perfectly presented. The 1/2 glass of wine option with each course satiates (not gorges) the dining experience. The staff is open to questions. Suggestions are made to safely shepherd you to a new and safe culinary level if you are willing to try. The interaction is genuine and heartfelt yet authentically NYC!"

  • "We researched this restaurant prior to our visit to NY from Toronto. It was our 30th anniversary, which I mentioned in my reservation. Being two women, I was unsure of the reaction. They couldn't have been nicer or more respectful. They brought a lovely little dessert for us on top of the one that we had already ordered. The food was probably the best that either of us have tasted! I had a scallop appetizer and we both had a carrot soup that was out of this world. The service was fabulous...can't think of a criticism."

  • "My expectations were high. I had read all the reviews and everyone loved it. Having been to 11 Madison, was excited to see how they ported their experience here. We has 9pm reservations and were seated on time, but were basically ignored for 35 min. We didn't place our order till 9:40. This was not because we were indecisive, our waitress never paid us any mind. Only after flagging down staff did we get service. Not a good way to start. Unfortunately, service never got much better. The food was good. We had 4 courses and enjoyed them, but I was underwhelmed by the flavors. The best dish was the carrot broth that they served as a palate cleanser before appetizers. I will come back again when the menu changes and hope for better."

  • "I chose this restaurant thinking that the New Yorker magazine was reliable. My experience was so-so compared to the frequent and excellent restaurants I visit in San Francisco and New York (Maialino, Jean Georges, Cafe Sabarsky, the old 11 Madison). The decor upstairs seemed conflicted and the service help seemed hesitant and unsure. I had 2 appetizers which limit the experience and they were the faro and sprouts and boiled monkfish in beet sauce. Both were different but unexciting. The glass of rose I had to turn back - the first time in all of my lifetime experience."

  • "Went for lunch with high expectations but we were underwhelmed. Place is beautiful but back dining room is too dark and feels a bit gloomy for lunch - I am sure it works better at night. Food was fairly good but it did not impress us; portions were small and prix fixe price (only available option for lunch) did not include dessert. I found our main waiter stuffy and inpatient and more interested in waiting on the business people seated next to us. The rest of the staff was very nice and attentive but they seem to be in training. Expensive, even with just one glass of wine each. I don't think I will be going back, it was fine, but I don't do fine for $210."

  • "The menu embraces comforting food, an elegant spin on the most "ordinary" fare; starting with an amuse of foamy carrot soup that barely grazed your palate as it went down, silky and wonderful with a warmed poppy seed roll, the perfect accompaniment. We shared the grain salad, a faux omelet on top of greens which the most sensuous tastes; pickled fennel was amazing, a yogurt and spice dipping sauce, it was lightly battered and fried, not heavy or greasy, and finally the ricotta gnudi which tasted nothing like ricotta but rather like gnocchi. We had the chicken dish which was divine, nothing peasant like about this dish with the most delicious vegetables. The one dish which was missing were the ribs, too marbled and inedible."

  • "The food was good. Atmosphere was nice. Service was lacking. The waites were not friendly. Treated us hastily. My brother and I are in our mid-twenties and they did not seem keen in serving uscompared to other older patrons. We sat without service or remark for long periods in between our meals. After main course we sat for more than 30 minutes without acknowledgement from anyone even though about 6 waiters passed us. We finally ask for dessert menu which did not arrive for about 10 more minutes and was practically thrown at us. We waited another 20 minutes and kept trying to grab someone to take our order. Finally gave up and ask for check. They were fast at that. Very disappointed. Many better restaurants - e.g. One Madison Park"

  • "I waited AGES for a 7:00 PM Saturday night reservation at the NYT Three Star hot spot of 2014. In all, the experience was pretty good, but not great. I think I hyped myself up a little too much, and had set the bar a bit too high. The portions are small, and the wine list only starts around $60 per bottle - not bad, until the bill comes and you've paid $300 for two people after tip. That said, there's a price to pay for having the pleasure of dining at one of the most fabulous new restaurants in the city, and especially with the service received both from the bar when waiting as well as from our waiter and the sommelier, it was well worth the cost!"

  • "Lovely restaurant! We went for our anniversary. The check in area had some issues. They did not take our coats, it was crowded and felt awkward. We were seated in the bar area and asked to move further into the restaurant. We were given a table for 4 for the 2 of us 1 table further from the bar. Chickpea dish and chicken liver mousse was fantastic. The chicken dish was disappointing and the short ribs were salty. Dessert was great. We would definitely recommend it to others yet not sure we would return due to the limited menu."

  • "Exquisite were the grilled fois gras and grilled short ribs. Also excellent was the roasted chicken breast. It is rare to find a restaurant that doesn't peak at the appetizer course. Betony held its own, and my admiration from fried pickles and lobster rolls, through gnudi and grilled fois gras, to roast chicken and grilled shortribs to the deserts: chocolate olive oil bergamot and passion fruit ginger cilantro. Service was uneven but attentive. All in all a very enjoyable evening."

  • "Welcoming, friendly, and professional service from reception to waiter, servers and bar staff (and we are 'nobodies.') Table ready at the booked time. We trusted the menu (scant descriptions) and everything was creative, tasty, unusual, beautiful, satisfying, and created via very sophisticated and complex techniques. Not everything is recognizable on the plate, but this is not a bad thing in the hands of a kitchen like this. Monkfish, foie chaud, short rib, chocolate were outstanding. Cocktails solid, wine list superb. Highly recommended for sophisticated international restaurant patrons…this is cuisine Americaine, version raffinée, haute. Serious food, and thankfully without any atmosphere of a pretentious temple."
