Bertrand at Mister A'sPerfect Anniversary DinnerWe were celebrating our anniversary and this was the perfect place to do it. Valet your car in rye garage and the elevator goes right up to the restaurant. We had an 8pm reservation and it was a perfect time to watch the city change from day to night. We were seated about 10 minutes after we arrived at a fabulous corner window table with an amazing view of downtown. Staff are well versed in fine dining service and we never needed to ask for anything. Started off with delicious cocktails and dinner was just wonderful. The duck is perfectly cooked, and the truffled Mac and cheese was to die for! Staff brought a special dessert for our anniversary. There were families there with young children celebrating graduation and yet a window table was reserved for a man and a woman who was scantly clad and spent most of her time making sure her breasts were tucked in . There were no handrails or safety features of any kind anywhere. I was exhausted by the time I got there. Once there, you will see the best view of anywhere in San Diego. The food merited the prices. Did I mention the view? The host was very attentive helping me get around. The meal met our expectations, but what I'll remember is the Bataan walk between 5th Avenue to the elevator. Scallops were amazing, seasoned perfectly and cooked just right. Everyone at our table was smiling and clapping every time the waiter poured wine or brought more food.
One of my biggest pleasures in life is good, yummy food; freshly made with care and respect for the food and the person who will be enjoying it.

Besides being an institution of fine dining, Mr. A's is also known for having the best view of any restaurant in the city. The menu is always varied but somewhat concise. Everything I and my guests have ordered was prepared excellently, as described on the menu. The dishes are presented attractively and the service is above average. Although it is a somewhat 'old school' establishment, it is appropriate to show up at Mr. A's in anything from casual to formal dress. Bertrand at Mister A's definitely qualifies as a top dollar spot - I spent a little over $200 after tip for the two of us (4 drinks, 2 apps, 2 entrees). But the service was spectacular, the view was amazing, the atmosphere was romantic, and the food was good.
The food should be the cornerpiece of every restaurant and I have been to similarly priced places that present flavors which blew my mind. The items we had didn't quite do that, but the food was fresh, hot, delicious, and packed with flavor. Consistently excellent quality but nothing that put it over the top to "I have never had anything this good before."
