Great food and presentation. Portion size appropriate and beer choices excellent. The Problem is the atmosphere (tired and dirty), the layout (hodgepodge), and the chairs were uncomfortable and right out of your local public library. I would not return with much better choices within a short walk.

Berret's is a dining experience. The wine list is short, but varied - with wines labelled with their country of origin. The food presentation is beautiful and professional. The ingredients are fresh and well-prepared. And delicious. Obvious pride is taken by the chef. This restaurant is a treasure.

We ate outside - there was quite a bit of street noise - as we were seated at the corner. The food was good but it took forever to get it. The food was warm for two of us, like it had been sitting out for a while, either waiting for the food for the others in our party to be done - or waiting for our waitress to pick it up. The she crab soup was worth the price of admission - some of the best I've ever had...

Since the early 1980s, on every trip to Williamsburg, we try to eat at Berrett's at least once and we have recommended it many times to others over the years. Some meals are better than others, but always good. The meal my husband and I had recently was excellent! The parchment paper dish of the day consisting fish, scallops, peppers and rice was very flavorful and tasty. Oysters Rockefeller and tuna appetizer were also excellent! Always a favorite stop in Williamsburg!

Eaten here many times and had never been disappointed until now. My dish, the most expensive on the menu, had to be sent back since it was not cooked. No excuse for that! My husband's seafood was over cold rice, which he didn't like. We will go back, just wouldn't get the same dishes.

i googled best restaurants in williamsburg and this was the spot. appetizer not so good, the calamari was under cooked, the she crab soup had no flavor. The air conditioner was dripping had to be moved. The main course was good but by that time we had had enough and took it home. I will say it was good but the best, hardly!

The food was very good as was the service. Décor left a lot to be desired and on a 91 degree evening so did the AC. Crab cakes excellent and sautéed veggies some of the best I've ever had. Desserts too large for one person after a rich dinner.

I say 'pleasantly surprised' because I found that restaurants in truly touristy locations are rarely gems unless you seek out the $$$s symbol. The food here was very very good. We had the tomato basil crab bisque followed by a fish plate that included a crab cake, fried shrimp and oysters. It was excellent and I would def recommend. Unfortunately for us, we were there for the G&G Taste Tradition and walked in for dinner with a full stomach or would have eaten more. (BTW, great pours on the drinks).

We have eaten here several times in the last year and enjoyed each outing. The food is always delicious, the service impeccable, and the attention to our food allergy and gluten-free requirements are always observed with grace and elegance! The Waterman's Special (?) scallops, crab imperial, oysters, shrimp, crab cake, vegetables is my husband's favorite and he always groans with delight when the meal is over! YUMMEEE!

Once again a lovely lunch! Food was good, love the surroundings, but the highlight of our visit was the delightful server that provided us with not only our meal but he (Paul) was a bright light studying to lead our world in the future! Kudos to the management for hiring the young, energetic young people from William and Mary. Did I mention how delicious the Key Lime tart was for dessert?

We enjoyed the patio. The food was very good, but the waiter continuously made inappropriate remarks like "still snackin' on your salad?" when we stopped him from taking our plates away before we had finished. He almost succeeded in ruining the experience, but the little girls running around were very entertaining. Probably a better experience for lunch than for dinner.

Although the service is still top notch at Berret's, the food is not as good as it used to be. We were somewhat disappointed with the Seafood Blue Plate Special, which we have had many times before. The crab cakes in particular are not what they used to be.

Service was attentive and pleasant. Unfortunately, my meal was uneatable. I ordered the Blue Plate Special and it was anything but. The crab portions were fried and full of filling with a poor taste and worse yet, no crab. The oysters were just plain awful if it is possible to ruin fried oysters. I will say that my wife enjoyed the fish special in parchment paper. Maybe I should have avoided the fried entrees. Nice atmosphere in the heart of Colonial Williamsburg but came up disappointing.

Lunch selections were plentiful with a large variety of seafood and some enticing specials. The food was well-prepared. We scaled back on our entrees, since the dessert menu looked too good to pass up, but still couldn't finish our dessert choices. The large portions were rich and delicious, although I would have been fine with a smaller portion. The fruit cobbler was especially good.

The ambience was wonderful, and my anticipation for great food was high based on numbers of people in the bar and patio, and based on their write up in local guide. However the fish dish was a bit disappointing ( perhaps the fish had been frozen or frozen too long). The service was just frustrating. The waitstaff member was pleasant, but not well trained and quite forgetful and inefficient. Perhaps we should have eaten in the bar/patio.

A delicious option near Colonial Williamsburg. Berret's is known for its seafood and also has a kids' menu. They have a more casual taproom next door, but don't think the restaurant is stuffy. The service is good. We enjoyed the mixed grill and the special in parchment (it was salmon and scallops cooked perfectly with white wine, orzo, tomatoes, herbs). Our second time here and we'll be back.

We ate at Barrets two evenings. The first night we had a special occasion and ate in. We had swordfish, which was delicious and well prepared. It is only available certain times of the year. We also had the mahi-mahi which was well prepared and very good. The bar selection of craft beers was interesting. We had a great time. On the next night we ate out on the patio and had the BBQ dinner and shrimp po-boy. They split the BBQ and fries and you couldn't tell they were split. What a feed.

This charming dining establishment in the Merchant's Square area of Colonial Williamsburg is a real gem. Although the menu may be limited and a bit pricey, the quality of food and ambiance more than make up for the expense. The food was excellent, as was the service and attention to service details. You may find this a welcome option outside of the overcrowded, overbooked, and noisy taverns on the main street of the historic area. This would an exceptional location for a special occasion. I highly recommend this restaurant.
