The wait staff was very courteous and helpful. The oyster stew was wonderful and the soft crabs and dessert were tasty as well. The only downside wa.s that the restaurant was noisy. We have been to Berret's several times before but not in five years. The food is consistently fresh and well prepared and presented. The dining areas are attractive and airy but the bar area is tiny and cramped. We've been seated in the bar area for dinner. It's not ideal. Ask for a booth or a table near one of the windows. In warmer months, there's a lot of outdoor dining space. Especially good: she crab soup; seafood in parchment paper; and cioppino (a special). A bit pricey but you're paying for quality food and the location. You can get to $85-100 for 2 people without wine quickly.5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent SeafoodWell prepared seafood is not easy. I find the fish in many restaurants either over cooked or under cooked and that was not the case. My rockfish in a cream sauce was perfectly prepared. Moist and hot. I hate when the food is left under a heat lamp and arrives either dry or cold. It was paired with fried oysters that were lightly breaded and crisp. Vegetables were al dente and well seasoned. The bread was served warm and was excellent for dipping in the extra virgin olive oil. Service was first rate. We ate in the restaurant and not in the outdoor area which is much more casual. There was an awkward moment as we were leaving. Another diner in Berret's restaurant asked for the Taphouse Grill menu and was told that wasn't an option. I have been to several seafood places throughout Europe and the States, and this is top 3.
I highly recommend to get te grilled catfish sandwich as it is very rich in flavor but subtle at the same time. If you do not like pickles, ask them to take them out. The Caesar Salad was the best, along with the crab cakes. My only negative about Berret's is the seating can be tight. There were two of us at a tiny table next to a group of six.
