Diner Reviews
  • "The calamari served with ginger soy sauce is a must every time we lunch here. This time we followed up with some of Tommy Leggett's oysters. The entire lunch was perfect, as always."

  • "Keeping in mind that this is defintely a tourist town, we still felt that the prices were high relative to the quality of the restaurant. The food was good, but pretty basic for a seafood place, and the service was friendly but a bit slow. Good local oysters, and really good crab cakes. We spend a good amount of time in Williamsburg, but had never been to Berrets. For the money, we would probably choose the Trellis or one of the colonial taverns in the future."

  • "Maybe because it followed some truly fantastic meals at Fat Canary and Second St but this food was uninspiring to say the least. Crab cake mediocre. She crab soup OK. Nothing special and not worth the money"

  • "You can judge a seafood restuarant by how it smells when you enter. It smelled wonderful! Berrets is famous for their crabcakes and justly so. The other seafood entree (salmon) was also excellent. It was a busy Saturday night, but we were seated in a room of 5 tables, making conversation easy. The service was attentive and prompt. Don't forget to save room for dessert, we shared and still couldn't finish it. We will make it a stop on our next return to Williamsburg."

  • "we enjoyed a pleasant cool evening outdoors, under a heater and the food was excellent and well presented"

  • "Make this restaurant a stop on your visit to Williamsburg. Absolutely the best calamari (appetizer) I have had - tender, sweet and cooked perfectly. The flounder/scallops baked in paper was terrific. Certainly a place I will visit again."

  • "We can always count on Berret's for a nice meal, nicely served in a setting where it's possible to enjoy good food and conversation. High quality and moderate prices make this a great place for a business lunch or getting together with an old friend. Berret's has been one of our favorites for years."

  • "The food was actually quite good and portions will satisfy, but deficiencies in the bar items and spotty service degraded the overall experience."

  • "There is no better restaurant in Williamsburg, just different styles. Great for adults."

  • "This is the 4th or 5th time our group of four has met there for lunch over a period of years and each time it is dependably good. Pleasant service and atmosphere, both outside dining and inside. Good variety of menu choices."

  • "A Colonial Williamsburg staple for as long as I can remember. Great place for seafood! Wonderful staff."

  • "this was the first time that we've been to Barrett's seafood restaurant enjoyed every minute very good service excellent food would recommend this restaurant anyone"

  • "We had a very nice meal here. The food is excellent and the young servers pleasant although in need of more training. But Jaime the wine steward is really terrific. She found the last bottle of our favorite wine from a previous visit and took the time to write down some other suggestions for us. We will make this one of our frequent dinner destinations. Sal and Judith Williamsburg"

  • "No privacy for the diner but the food was great. Everyone is sitting on top of each other. Go there for the food and not the atmosphere."

  • "This was our first time at Berrett's and we took out of town guests because it was close to their final venue of the day. We had a reservation and arrived early - the restaurant nicely accommodated us. However, once seated there was a long pause before anyone came to the table with menus or water. Maybe we threw their wait staff off schedule. All four of us had different entrees - lamb shank, flounder/scallops, tuna/oysters and crab cake. They were all good, but not the best we've ever had. Presentation needs some work. We will return since it is close by, easy to get to from many Colonial Williamsburg venues and we like seafood."

  • "The restaurant is very close to the admissions office for the college. We ate here with my son, who is looking at colleges, and a current sophomore at William and Mary after a very cold rainy tour March 18th. There was a fireplace in the main dining room with a comfortable blaze burning, and the food was very good -- both boys had burgers as they are not seafood fans, and seemed to like them just fine. Good spot for a lunch near the campus."

  • "First we were stuck with a table near the servers station in the back with an unparalleled view of the stack of kiddie seats. The server was energetic and OK. The crab cake (this is a seafood place) was pasty and tasteless (hey gang ol bay seasoning helps here), there were scraps of food on the carpet and there was no parking to be had outside. This place is touted by the locals as a great seafood place but I would warn open table folks to avoid this one."

  • "The food was fantastic but the service we received was terrible, in fact the worst I've ever had. We were seated in a back room, that may have once been a porch when there were several available tables in the main dining area. The waitress spoke very soft and very fast, it was near impossible to understand her, we actually had to get her attention midway through our meal to ask for more beverages. Towards the end of our meal my husband on his way to the men's room overheard a young man, maybe a busboy, tell the bar tender there was a two top in the back room that's been there foreeevvvveeerrrrr.....the truth is we had 3 courses and were only there for and hour and 10 minutes....it's such a shame, the food was good."

  • "Berret's continues to be one of our favorite restaurants in Williamsburg. On this visit my wife and I both ordered the She Crap bisque which is always good. We also had two of the specials with fresh seafood which were fabulous as well. 25% off for Virginia wines was a surprise and paired very well with our seafood entrees. The service was excellent as we have always come to expect as well. All in all a fantastic dinner followed by an after dinner stroll through Colonial Williamsburg."

  • "I took my sister to Berret's for an out-of-town getaway luncheon. Neither of us had been there before. The food was exceptional, the atmosphere quite nice....all in all, an excellent experience. I look forward to taking my husband there for a special dinner."

  • "We had high expectations for this restaurant because of past experiences. In fact we drove in from Virginia Beach and our client drove in from Richmond to have dinner together. The Filet that two of the three of us ordered was tougher than shoe leather. It was by far the worst Filet I have ever had Anyway, it was a disappointing/off night for the price we paid, however, I have had very good food here in the past."

  • "..and the crab cakes remain the best in town! It is nice they continue to offer the fifteen dollar discount coupon....a "win-win" situation for all in the non tourist months! Parking spots are available!"

  • "We've talked about eating here during previous visits, finally decided to go based on reviews. Delightful experience with excellent waiter. It can get a little noisy, but the food was so good, we're going again during our visit to Williamsburg."

  • "Delicious food. Always look forward to the she-crab soup and seafood."

  • "A great place to meet friends. However, I found the food average. My Caesar salad was mostly "white core" Romaine and I had to ask for more salad dressing. I ordered the appetizer Shrimp with Brie in Pastry with a vegetable topping. The veggies had no seasoning in them. It was a very bland meal with the exception of a great dessert. We asked for a quiet spot so we could visit with friends and that was honored.....but we ate early. I can find more interesting places with better food in Wmsburg."

  • "My family was vacationing at Great Wolf Lodge, we found this restaurant online. We couldn't of made a better choice , food was wonderful and it was kid friendly, waitstaff was attentive . We will definetly return."

  • "Have eaten here many times and looked forward to a wonderful meal. For our 5 pm Valentine's dinner we had a good seafood combo appetizer. Our Entree's were not up to par. My husband's steak had to be sent back because the steak was not cooked to his specification. Meanwhile the waitress still had not opened our red wine to have with the dinner. My filet mignon was miniscule and the grilled shrimp (4) were not grilled (crispy on the outside) as expected."

  • "My wife and I went for a romantic dinner and we were not disappointed. The service and the food was first class, and the wine was a good value. We will definite recommend this restaurant to our friends."

  • "Menu advertised whole stuffed lobster. Imagine our surprise when lobster was presented at table without claws. How can you order a whole lobster and then have it plated without approx 1/3 of its lobster meat. When this was mentioned to manager - all he said was I'm sorry - didnt offer to try to make it right."

  • "Entrees mid 20s EXCLUDING a salad. Wine selection very good but for a good oaky chardonnay you'll spend $12. For two of us having birthday dinner including side salads, 3 glasses of wine, crab dip appetizer, splitting an entree, and a piece of cake, ended up at $105. Now add tip and a 10% food tax and its quite a lot for dinner. I'd only go there for a special occasion. We've been there for their Thanksgiving dinners they have which are quite reasonable in pricing. For Thanksgiving dinner I would never consider going anywhere else. We love this restaurant. Great service, excellent food and great atmosphere. Just make sure you have some extra money in your budget for eating at Berrets!"

  • "Our search for a new favorite in Williamsburg is over...Berret's was cozy with various seating areas throughout and the food was wonderful. We can't wait until warmer weather to enjoy the Taphouse outside."

  • "Varied selections on the menu; good seafood and ample portions. Waiter was friendly and attentive. Attractively decorated and festive for the holidays."

  • "Over 30 years we have eaten here on numerous occasions, lunch and dinner, and have always enjoyed. The menu is broad and they also offer great specials. The food is well prepared and the presentation is very well done and the serving portions are generous. The staff is always friendly and gracious. The dining areas are well suited for intimate dinning for two but also can handle large parties in the main dining room where there is a wonderful fire place. Management seems to not over-book so that there is not a wait for getting in when you have reservations. There is a nice size area in which they have a pub which has seating for eating. Finally, the prices are more than fair for this kind of dinning experience."

  • "Right in the heart of Colonial Williamsburg, and therefore a tourist destination, this restaurant still has a great neighborhood feel to it. The food was great and the service was exceptional. Highly recommend the Bloody Mary, it's phenomenal."
