Diner Reviews
  • "Bernard O's continues as one of the best all around fine dining experiences in all of San Diego. Bernard is always pleasant and cordial as he greets you when you enter the establishment and he has chosen well for his serving staff. The Chef always has local produce surprises and the quality and consistency of the meal planning is always a cut above."

  • "We eat at Bernardo's quite often. They have amazing mussels at happy hour and wonderful dishes during dinner also. It's an elegant yet casual atmosphere and Bernard always welcomes you to his wonderful restaurant."

  • "A very nice place for dinner. It is a little expensive If you have more than one or two courses and wine. The food is excellent, especially the fillet mignon. The French Onion soup needs to be reviewed by the owner but he will be doing that. We hope to find it back to excellent the next time we visit. The ambiance is excellent and is a very comfortable place."

  • "The food was over priced, portions were extremely small and food arrived cold."

  • "We went for a special occasion fairly early on a Thursday night. This is obviously a place that is frequented by the rancho Bernardo locals. Good food and friendly wait staff."

  • "Never made the trip to eat here until this week. What a great find! Good French food, great service, and a beautifully serene atmosphere. I will return to sample some of the other entrees soon. Enjoyed the escargot and the daily crepe too. Looking forward to the next trip to Bernard - O's"

  • "The food was excellent, and the atmosphere friendly. The service sincere and well-intentioned, but our waiter was a bit absent-minded. He gave me a Manhattan without vermouth (?), but wisely did not charge us for it. The scene is a small neighborhood restaurant for couples and families, with white table cloths, lively little bar area for a more elderly crowd. Those who live in this more senior living area know to come here for well-prepared dishes, delicious deserts, and drinks, at prices that fit the higher quality of the food. I wouldn't necessarily travel for miles to dine here, but since we live in the area, it is definitely one of our favorites."

  • "Appetizers were beautifully presented. My husband and I had two appetizers and two main entrees. We were fulled and had to skip the desert. Well price."

  • "Bernard'O sets a consistently high standard. This was a first visit for lunch - previously only had dinner there. The patio was not in use which was disappointing, however we had a very pleasant table with good service and excellent food. First visit for accompanying friends. Every discerning neighborhood deserves a similar restaurant."

  • "Outstanding. Wonderful. Terrific. We thought it would be nice, but, because of the location in a shopping center in Rancho Bernardo, we weren't prepared for such a very fine establishment. We certainly didn't know it would be spectacular. Waiting at the bar was a treat and Bernard himself being the maitre d was charming. Every person on staff was excellent. Each of the courses: bibb salad, seabass, scallops, cranberry tart were absoutely superb. The pinot grigio wine was terrific. We have dined in many fine restaurants in the San Diego area and nationally and Bernard'O is absolutely one of the best we've experienced."

  • "We've been eating at Bernard'O for two decades; it has been, and continues to be, reliably good. This menu doesn't change to reflect the latest trend; it simply provides very good French-inspired food at a reasonable price. This time we were with friends. Two of us had the beef bourguignon, and two of us had sea bass. The fish preparation was also available with cod that day if one preferred. We shared the Belgian endive starter, and our friends had the French onion soup and the soup du jour which was zucchini fennel. For dessert we had profiteroles and the sampler plate. Everyone really liked everything! Service was and attentive, and Bernard stopped by the table to be sure all was well. We'll likely be back for decades to come!"

  • "We really enjoyed the food here. The three of us all got different entrees and shared bites and it was all delicious. The wait staff was pleasant and attentive. I would highly recommend to anyone."

  • "We had a lovely lunch here -- the atmosphere was wonderful -- very pretty inside the restaurant and excellent for a lunchtime visit without a lot of confusion and noise. The food was delicious and the service was first class."

  • "We took our infant here for the first time and our server even asked if we needed warm water for heating/making a bottle. Wow - that guy must be a dad! Food was very good, except for the hard little canneloni served with the short ribs. Unfortunately, I noticed toward the end of our meal that my glass had lipstick on it from a previous diner. Won't keep us from returning, but I'll have to try to remember to check the glass at the start of the meal next time."

  • "Found this gem when we were trying to find a high end restaurant that was not all the way downtown. This place does not disappoint! If you like Mr A's food, you will love this too. A bit pricey but the food makes it worth it. It has a nice atmosphere in the main area, but the side area is nothing special. The service has always been top notch every time we have gone. Give it a try!"

  • "We enjoyed our main courses, and the ingredients were fresh and tasty. Mixed drinks were also good and reasonably priced. Deserts were okay, but they were out of one and a bit pricey. Overall good experience."

  • "Creative menu, attentive service, nice wine selection, pleasant decor. Have outside tables but never sat there. This is a repeat experience for me so that speaks well of the place. A back room can accommodate groups. Worth a visit . "

  • "With regret I have to say that Bernard'O's turned out to be what others had warned me about... We arrived early, seated early, waited for an hour to receive our first course - then 30 more minutes to receive the main course - the entire brunch was approximately 3 hours, with no apologies from the management. Cearly this was a tragic experience that resulted in the worst Mother's Day brunch we have ever experienced. Next year its back to Denny's."

  • "Food was pretty good overall but they were out of a few things by 6:45pm on a Saturday night which was very disappointing and left a bad first impression. The waitress, while not exactly rude, was standoffish and came across a little snooty. Hoped for better service during our Anniversary dinner. While not bad, probably will try another restaurant for French cuisine next time."

  • "the experience was good overall. Service could be better, I have to try a few times to get attention of our waitress to get something. but it was a good experience overall. The food was good, not exceptional."

  • "Our 8 person group enjoyed our dinner. Two guests are vegan, so asked for special meal. They were very pleased with their meals. I had beef burgundy and meat was tender and flavorful. Others enjoyed their various dinners. Service was excellent and restaurant quiet. Only surprise was that owner didn't come by to greet us like he seemed to do with other tables. "

  • "I travel from Monarch Beach weekly to visit my Mother and Brother. My Brother and I have dined four times at Bernardos and it is consistently outstanding. The food is delicious and plated beautifully. The lunch server, Jeff, is professional, informed and delightful. I dine frequently all over the world; and Bernardos is in a league to compete with the world's best. I look forward to each dining experience at Bernardos. Rancho Bernardo is so fortunate to have such an outstanding dining establishment in its community."

  • "I have frequented this retaurant for at least 20 years and it only gets better over time. Bernard is a gracious host! He has retained his wait staff for many years as well and they are all a pleasure to get to know. The chef has created an outstanding menu and every item we have tried was prepared to perfection. Bernard offers a great selection of wines that are excellent values and of the highest qualities. Thursday nights are always special since they have an outstanding jazz guitarist. The pastry chef is always creating amazing desserts and it is hard to choose a favorite. Bernard offers special wine dinners.ber They even have a special wine banquet room for groups. Bernardo's is consistently one of San Diego's finest restaurants."

  • "Amazing French-Californian cuisine with fantastic service. We were the youngest in the restaurant by about 30 years, but were not treated any worse. Would go again for a special occasion!"

  • "The food was delightful! The service was superb. The neighboring table was a little loud, but can't blame the staff for that! Overall it was the perfect place to celebrate my husband’s birthday! Oh yes the "Happy Birthday" crème brule.... to die for!"

  • "This was our first visit, but certainly not our last. We loved the décor and background music, and the food was outstanding. I had beef bourguignon and my husband had the flatiron steak. Both dishes are ones we'd order again. It was a perfect evening."

  • "We have been dining at Bernardo's for several years now, and always found it to be very good. I started with the Mushroom Ravioli, always my favorite, came with sauteed wild mushrooms, port wine, white truffle oil sauce..excellent. I then had the White Sea Bass with Fregola pasta, English peas, pea vines, and excellent as well, I specially liked the slightly burned crust while tender inside. My wife opted for the Grilled Flat Iron Steak Potato & fennel gratin in a green peppercorn sauce and sshe raved about it. It was cooked as ordered, medium rare, and the meat was tender so it was perfect and delicious. We skipped dessert this time, but maybe on our next visit, as we will surely return."

  • "Great fine dining option if you are in the area. Not necessarily worth driving out of your way to it though. They seem to have a great happy hour with generous hours. We had a party of 11 and service was attentive although not overall welcoming or friendly. Not sure if it is the owner that sets the vibe for that - not much smiling or warming emanating from any of the staff. Winning entrees seemed to be the filet mignon, hangar steak and braised short ribs. Prices are about what you would expect for this type of establishment."
    Dined on 3/22/2014
  • "Although the food was tasty, the entrees were expensive for the portion sizes. I got the seabass and my husband the salmon. They were about 2-3 oz portions and price was around $26."
