Diner Reviews
  • "I have frequented this retaurant for at least 20 years and it only gets better over time. Bernard is a gracious host! He has retained his wait staff for many years as well and they are all a pleasure to get to know. The chef has created an outstanding menu and every item we have tried was prepared to perfection. Bernard offers a great selection of wines that are excellent values and of the highest qualities. Thursday nights are always special since they have an outstanding jazz guitarist. The pastry chef is always creating amazing desserts and it is hard to choose a favorite. Bernard offers special wine dinners.ber They even have a special wine banquet room for groups. Bernardo's is consistently one of San Diego's finest restaurants."

  • "Amazing French-Californian cuisine with fantastic service. We were the youngest in the restaurant by about 30 years, but were not treated any worse. Would go again for a special occasion!"

  • "The food was delightful! The service was superb. The neighboring table was a little loud, but can't blame the staff for that! Overall it was the perfect place to celebrate my husband’s birthday! Oh yes the "Happy Birthday" crème brule.... to die for!"

  • "Owners and staff are on top little details. French bistro menu with U.S. leanings."

  • "This was our first visit, but certainly not our last. We loved the décor and background music, and the food was outstanding. I had beef bourguignon and my husband had the flatiron steak. Both dishes are ones we'd order again. It was a perfect evening."

  • "We have been dining at Bernardo's for several years now, and always found it to be very good. I started with the Mushroom Ravioli, always my favorite, came with sauteed wild mushrooms, port wine, white truffle oil sauce..excellent. I then had the White Sea Bass with Fregola pasta, English peas, pea vines, and excellent as well, I specially liked the slightly burned crust while tender inside. My wife opted for the Grilled Flat Iron Steak Potato & fennel gratin in a green peppercorn sauce and sshe raved about it. It was cooked as ordered, medium rare, and the meat was tender so it was perfect and delicious. We skipped dessert this time, but maybe on our next visit, as we will surely return."

  • "Great fine dining option if you are in the area. Not necessarily worth driving out of your way to it though. They seem to have a great happy hour with generous hours. We had a party of 11 and service was attentive although not overall welcoming or friendly. Not sure if it is the owner that sets the vibe for that - not much smiling or warming emanating from any of the staff. Winning entrees seemed to be the filet mignon, hangar steak and braised short ribs. Prices are about what you would expect for this type of establishment."

  • "We have gone to this restaurant for sixteen years and the food just gets better. Service and ambiance the best. Priced right. A bargain for a great meal. JWM"

  • "Love this place for certain dishes, but the prime rib was too fatty and too rare even when we asked for a better cooked meat. We had a great staff experience and will visit again."

  • "Although the food was tasty, the entrees were expensive for the portion sizes. I got the seabass and my husband the salmon. They were about 2-3 oz portions and price was around $26."

  • "Arrived early and left late. (Table was pre-set and we were accommodated very nicely.) It was a true "Dining Experience", as usual. The food is always excellent, but the management attitude and quality of service are absolutely superb! The noise level was quiet enough for a group of hard of hearing men to be able to carry on a conversation very comfortably."

  • "We chose this restaurant because we had tickets for a performance at the Poway Center for Performing Arts. Was close enough to the theatre and the menu looked pretty good. We took our own bottle of wine, which we do very often to most restaurants. No problem there. The French onion soup was delicious. Very light and tasty. I opted for the salmon - it was cooked perfectly and was quite good. My husband had the chicken, sausage and white bean stew and he thought it was a bit dry. We passed on dessertt - too full! Our waitress was very nice and attentive, knowing we were on a timeline to make the show. I think we would return to this restaurant."

  • "Great food and service in a white table cloth atmosphere. A little noisier than I would have preferred, but quitter than most restaurants."

  • "The tartar appetizer was the melt-in-my-mouth promise this sashimi-lover dreams of. The bass was moist and flakey with a crisp scaleless skin added for texture. The corn polenta was a good note, but it looked as if it had been cooked or braised too long. Perhaps it was caramelized but it didn't taste that way. I ordered the sorbet, but there was only one tiny icy scoop. The remaining desert tasted too much like pure whipped cream to finish. Even though the portions were small, all together they were perfect, so I don't see the need for a highly caloric desert. It would have been better to provide two or three icy scoops of translucent sorbet (maybe different flavors) rather than that multilayer, rectilinear cream-laden accompaniment."

  • "We spent the Thursday before Valentine's Day dining at Bernardo's in RB. The service was very good and the food was outstanding as usual. We had the scallops appetizer (great with wonderful sauces) followed by the Sea Bass (small portion, but really good) and the filet (very nicely sized portion--near 8 oz). Dessert was a very well prepared molten lava chocolate cake. Overall, a very nice night at this consistently good restaurant."

  • "We have dined here before. The quality seems to be consistent. We have always enjoyed ourselves. My husband had their Ceasar's Salad and the venison pate. I had the restaurant week menu. We both really enjoyed the dessert together. Their bread was warm, right out of the oven. We will go back"

  • "We've dined here several times before and always enjoy it. Although we went on New Year's Eve, the server was able to be attentive without rushing us. Each course was served with sufficient time before the next course. The Black Sea Bass my wife had was the best she has ever had. She just couldn't stop complimenting it. So perfectly cooked and seasoned. I had the veal duo: veal tenderloin and veal short ribs. Both were very flavorful and tender, though I favored the short ribs over the tenderloin just slightly. The portion size of each course was just right. This was the second time we've dined here since transitioning to their current Executive Chef, Vincent Viale. Clearly Bernard O's is in capable hands."

  • "Food is excellent, certainly a french touch. With that comes a service that allows you to enjoy your meal, time between courses. Cheeses excellent as were desserts. 2nd time we eat there, and the quality is consistent."

  • "The food and ambiance was superb as were the waitstaff. I had the fettuccine pasta and I couldn't believe the detail they put into this simple dish, from a foamy sauce to the tiny garlic croutons on top! I asked the busboy about the preparation of my meal and he was very knowledgeable and so pleasant. Even the butter is extraordinary!"

  • "We've been to Bernard'O a few times and both food and service have been consistently good. This time, we were seated next to a cute older couple who are there every week (we overheard some of the staff talking with them). Has to be good for someone to want to go every weekend."

  • "Greeted at door, serving staff was very attentive, special Thanksgiving meal was delicious, esp butternut squash soup and nicely presented. Prime rib serving was large and cooked medium as requested.Restaurant was very clean, booth we sat in was roomy and table was nicely set. Well lit, fireplace was nice touch."

  • "This was our first time at Bernard'O restaurant. The atmosphere is warm and inviting. The fireplace lends a comfortable ambience to the place. Servers were very friendly and helpful. The food was fantastic and the bartender knows how to make a great martini! Overall, I would highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "Took my sister here for her birthday and truly enjoyed ourselves. Our server was excellent and very knowledgeable. The food was lovely and we enjoyed our wine selections as well. There are not a lot of great restaurants to choose from in the area as far as fine dining is concerned, but Bernard'O is in the top five for sure. And the price was quite reasonable as well. I will return again!"

  • "I was a bit disappointed & unimpressed. The beef in my beef bourguignon was fall apart tender, but the flavor was just ok. My husband said the seafood pasta at Sammy's was better than the pasta he had here. They were out of the creme brulee so the waiter suggested the creme brulee trio. The coffee flavored had the most flavor but was runny enough to be coffee. The persimmon was ok, but too thick. The lemon was ok. I think one of the more disturbing things was listenng to the manager try to figure out whether or not he was going to honor the coupon for the table next to us and then complain about honoring it to another table. Really ought not bad mouth customers to other customers for using a coupon you put in the paper."

  • "The place was a lot smaller than we expected and not sure why we didn't get a booth since we requested it when we made the reservation and there were empty booths the whole time we were there. They only had 1 person taking orders for the entire restaurant, 1 person cleaning the table and 1 person bringing out the food, so we had to wait for a really long time for anything... Our glasses were empty several times for a while and had to ask for a refill... The food was great though and that's the only good thing about this restaurant. Although it's a requirement for a restaurant to have good food, I believe that customer service is equally important. For that reason, I doubt that I would go back again."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch at Bernardo's, especially the gracious service that made us feel appreciated. We celebrated a special "0" birthday and the staff could not have been nicer. The food was very good, well prepared and with many interesting ingredients. It was hard to choose which dish to order - guess we will just have to return again, very soon!"

  • "Yes, the food was great but as a restaurant this one failed in every other category. The waiter was too new, not knowledgeable and poured the wine dregs and all. The tables are too close together for private conversation. The kitchen was very slow. We were seated for 20 minutes before our salads arrived and another 30 minutes before our dinner arrived. The dessert we ordered came burnt but it was neither replaced or comp'd. All in all there are other restaurants close by that may give up a little in food quality but provide a better dining experience."

  • "Food was tremendous. Service excellent. Quieter dinners can be had in the room behind the greeter's desk. Very good wine list with (at least as to Chardonnay) extremely reasonable prices for a restaurant."

  • "The appetizers were superb. We had both the pork bellies and mushroom soup. The entree was also outstanding. My wife and I both had the scallop dish which was cooked to perfection. The atmosphere was romantic and the service was great, unlike some of the reviews I had read before making my reservation."
