Diner Reviews
  • "This was our first visit. The waitress was very aware that we were going to a show and kept us on schedule. We will definitely be back."

  • "Small in a good way, very romantic, the food was great, service could be better( our server had only 2 other tables)"

  • "Service was fair a little slow. The food was great especially the scallops appetizer and the venison."

  • "I've eaten at this restaurant before and enjoyed the Filet Mignon very much. That's why I chose to go there again when there was an event at the Knight Theater. I had calamari as an appetizer. It came with a couple of sauces, both of them spicy, and one of them with a hint of horseradish. Phenomenal way to start a meal! The salmon was perfectly cooked and the chocolate torte was to die for. I left the establishment very pleased as I waddled my way to my event across the street. Convenient parking in The Green on 1st Street. Always a favorite restaurant of mine when I am uptown attending an event within walking distance."

  • "We like Bernardin's for dinner because of their excellent food, fine atmosphere and perfect service. Our dinner night” is the first Friday of each month when we leave from dinner for the Bechtler Jazz night across the street. It makes for a perfect evening. We recommend it for any dinner out in Charlotte. It goes beyond “dinner and a show” to just enjoying a dinner out in town."

  • "My fiance and I had an amazing experiance at Bernardin's. It was our first time there and I had booked the reservation as a surprise for our Anniversary. And it was a great suprise not only for my fiance but myself as well. I had added a special request for since it was our Anniversary and they made it so special. We had the best table in the place and started out with complimentary champagne. Our server Megan was perfection. I'd give this place 10 stars if I could."

  • "the food is fantastic, really unique ambiance - not your traditional steakhouse. Only complaint is there was a large party of 20-30 in the room with us & it felt as though our table was not important. Our server was late to greet us & then jumped into the specials without really greeting us or asking for our drink order. She said she would bring us bread and it was clear she forgot because we had to wait about 15 minutes for the bread which came out just a few minutes before our entree. She never stopped by to check on us. Everything was very delicious but it felt our server neglected us and/or rushed us. Would definitely recommend the restaurant but would suggest you find out if there are other large parties scheduled at your same time."

  • "We love this restaurant, one of our favorites in Charlotte."

  • "My husband and I thought the service was great. For me the food was just so-so. I had the Lobster Ravioli. While I liked it I found the lobster to be a bit tough. Maybe it's supposed to be that way...I'm not sure. I don't order it often. And I expected more raviolis. I only received 5 of them and they were pretty small. For the price I don't think it was worth it. My husband enjoyed his meal. He ordered a steak dish."

  • "We wanted to try a restaurant that we'd never been to before . This was a true delight start to finish. Great waitress.. Warm and friendly. Very helpful and knowledgeable. Food came beautifully presented after we made our choices from a varied yet interesting menu. We'll definitely tell our friends and return soon !"

  • "We love trying the not-usual choices - the Kangaroo was prepared "India" style and was perfect. The service was spot on, separating out shared dishes and assuring we had time for tea before leaving for a concert."

  • "Dessert was awesome and rest of food was solid, but not great."

  • "Excellent service, good list of adult beverages, and a wide variety of unique entrees, including steaks, seafood, venison, bison, kangaroo and other more traditional American fine dining (pasta, chicken). Decent selection of appetizers and salads, daily che's special entrees and soup. Attentive staff. Good, unique, close. If you're looking for fine dining unique to Charlotte (not one of the chains-Morton's, Flemings, M & S, Ruth Chris), this is a great choice"

  • "This space has a long history in downtown Charlotte. Once a beaux art florist shoppe, Bernadin's has re-created that colorful whimsy in the decor and in the menu. Everyone in our company loved their meal and the service was excellent. Try the lobster ravioli. It is over the top."

  • "The seared tuna was excellent and the duck was very good. Very nice décor."

  • "Bernardin's needs improvement nearly everywhere. From the oddly dressed, unprofessional, Bohemian hostess who referred to us as "you guys" when seating us to the standoffish waitress who had to read the night's specials from a list to my wife's undercooked filet mignon with an overcooked, rubbery lobster tail, things weren't looking good. My duck was covered in a delicious fig and honey sauce, but the duck itself was chewy. The accompanying mascarpone polenta cakes sounded good but were fried, which didn't work when paired with duck. While they did the right thing and comped my wife's meal, they did so many things wrong we won't likely return. For that price, I expect professional staff and excellent food. We got neither."

  • "Tables were too close; I could have eaten off the table next to me. The food was scares. I ordered scallops for dinner and got 4. That's not even a good appetizer. I got the feeling they think they are upscale but they are actually want-to-bes. That was my first and last time dining there."

  • "This was my 3rd visit. First two were fantastic. Great food and service. Beautiful space. This last trip was around 915 pm and they were not very busy. Three of the four entrees were sent back. Shrimp were cold and both Grouper plates were over cooked. Waiter was pretty much apathetic. Came to the table reeking of cigarette smoke. No real apology and we did not hear from any manager as to the poor quality of our first round of food. Lots of noise, pots and pans slamming, coming from the kitchen at the end of the meal. Had special guests with us and it was embarrassing."

  • "I found the restaurant good, but room for improvements. The dining room is visually appealing, but it is noisy. The slate floor and domed ceilings amplify the noise, so I had a hard time hearing the servers. We ordered the Escargot, garden salad with champagne vinaigrette, venison, Scallops, flan, and chocolate torte. The escargot, however, is exceptionally good. The venison dish is nice and well cooked, but the au gratin potatoes are messy and unappealing. My wife ordered the scallops, which we nicely done. The coconut flan was a highlight of the meal, as was my wife's chocolate tort. My only criticism of the food is the champagne vinaigrette -- acidic, tart, and unpalatable (I had to send the salad back)."

  • "My girlfriend and I chose Bernardin's for this year's Valentine's Day date night, and we were blown away. The level of service and quality of the food was remarkable. The menu offerings were inspired and intriguing, with features like Tandoori Grilled Kangaroo Loin and Bison Steaks. I couldn't pass up the opportunity to try kangaroo, and it was immediately clear that this was not just a clever gimmick. The meat was cooked to a perfect medium rare and the seasoning and presentation were stunning. My better half ordered the Lobster Ravioli, which came topped with a whole 1.25 pound Maine lobster. The portion was the perfect size, but the amount of lobster meat therein was very impressive. Best dining experience in Charlotte, reasonable price."

  • "Everything about the meal was nice and certainly upscale. However, in the end, no one raved about their meal. It was all good, but somehow didn't blow our socks off. We were disappointed to come the day after Valentine's and find a limited menu, but I understand why restaurants choose to do that. I had venison, which was quite good, except I didn't like the loganberry topping - in my opinion it wasn't the right flavor profile with the meat. I brought home leftovers, scraped that off and substituted a more savory rub before reheating, and it was delicious. My husband's sea bass was quite good, but also too much on the sweet side, in my opinion. Very good service."

  • "The restaurant was beautiful and the service was great. The owner or manager came by the table a couple of times to ask if everything was OK. The price of the food was quite reasonable for very good quality. The wine list was a bit pricey but they had a few bottles of reasonably priced good wine. It was nice to enjoy great food in a restaurant that was quiet enough so that you could still carry on a conversation."

  • "We happened upon an open reservation at Bernadin's on Valentines Day. We were very pleased with the restaurant, the staff and the menu selection. The menu featured several interesting entrees that I had never seen including the kangaroo which I thoroughly enjoyed. Great Spot, a definite recommendation."

  • "We will certainly not return to this restaurant. We dined on Valentines day and we were seated so close to another couple that we felt that we were eating with them. The waitress was strange and the food mediocre.."

  • "Tired of the same ole steakhouse? The Palm, Ruth's Chris, Del Friscos - the're all great, but at some point enough is enough. Bernadin's has great atmosphere, cordial and efficient servers and an unusual inventive menu. Kangaroo? Bison? A lot of mainstream entrees too - but all prepared in a signature way. $150.00 including tip for two. Very reasonable for this level of quality."

  • "Though this was our first dinner, our meals were just as outstanding as our numerous lunches. Clam chowder and fried oyster salad were lovely, the bison and duck breast superb. Only flaw: we had to eat very early, at 6 pm, and when the lights were lowered at 6:30 it made us wish they had been lowered from the start."

  • "I love everything about this restaurant the only thing that surpasses the food and service is the amazing decor - picture your self at a classy restaurant anywhere in the world."

  • "We dined on a Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. and were seated immediately for our reservation. The theater crowd was just finishing up and by 7:30 the place was much less noisy. We had an appetizer of foie gras which was wonderful. I had a filet and my husband had kangaroo. Both were preceded by terrific salads. The meals were perfectly cooked and delicious. The only issue we had was pacing. Our appetizer came out at 7:20, but salads didn't come until almost 7:45...then dinner didn't get served until 8:15. So we ended up having at least 15 minutes between each course and we had to pick our son up at the movies at 9:00. Our server was very good. Just make sure you have two full hours for dinner if you are going to have 3-4 courses."

  • "We really enjoyed the food. The restaurant is nice inside once you get through the narrow entrance and bar. The food was delicious and the waitress really attentive and professional. It was a bit noisy. There were tow large tables across from us and we could barely hear each other. They have a nice romantic table separate from the restaurant main room that could be reserved for special occasions."

  • "My husband and I ate here Saturday night for the first time. We found the food to be pretty good, but nothing particularly outstanding. The portions are fairly large for this type restaurant. The worse thing I got was the wedge salad, I've had much better. The best thing was the chocolate torte, which was the only outstanding thing we had. The lobster ravioli dish and lobster that came with the steak were very good. I agree that the filet is just OK, and I wasn't impressed with the potato cake others have raved about. The presentations were lovely, though. The unusual game dishes might have been the way to go. For the $200 we spent, I would try a different restaurant next time."

  • "Our appetizers were excellent. My course good, my wife's course good, but cold. Not cool -- cold. The waiter had to be asked for bread and to take a drink order."

  • "We tried Bernardin's for the first time during restaurant week. The interior of the dining space was totally my style, so I immediately loved the ambiance! The food was outstanding and our server was attentive without rushing us; which sometimes happens during restaurant week. We will be back!!"

  • "We went for Charlotte Restaurant Week, which tends to be busier. They had a steady flow throughout the night. The CAB Filet was wonderful, along with the tuna and finished with the chocolate torte- all a treat!"
