Diner Reviews
  • "great service, food options and preparation was superb, overall a delightful experience."

  • "I've dined at Bernardin's on several occasions before. I have never been disappointed. I took my daughter on a dinner date since she didn't want to attend her high school's prom. The food was incredible - great variety of choices and outstanding preparation. I'm sure she will remember the kangaroo steak more than she would have an evening with her classmates."

  • "We really enjoyed our dining experience at Bernardin's Restaurant at the Zevely House. This was our first time eating there since Bernardin's changed locations. The atmosphere was quaint and cozy. There was a small group there but they didn't overwhelm the space. Our waitperson was very friendly and helpful with our menu selection. We both ordered the clam chowder and the kangaroo. The chowder was very good and the kangaroo was excellent. We will definitely be back."

  • "This was our first visit to Bernardin's and it will not be our last. It was a wonderful experience. Bottle of winde delivered upon arrival and we were able to enjoy a glass of wine and martini while reviewing the menu. We ordered a Heirloom tomato salad appetizer. The salad had a basil sherry vinagrette and was light and crispy. Very refreshing. One of the specials was a 1 1/4 lobster with lobster ravioli with a creme sauce and shrimp and the dish looked absolutely delightful. My husband said it was outstanding. I ordered the Surf & Turf with a potato cake, spinach, horseradish cream, and lemon wine. I asked for it med rare and it was perferctly done. Everything was tastefully done!"

  • "We celebrated our first year wedding anniversary here and we may continue the tradition every year! Their lobster ravioli was the special and it was to die for! An absolute must if they have it on the menu! Great service, beautiful atmosphere and a definite favorite on our dining card!"

  • "Great food and service. This place never disappoints and can be counted on to deliver on expectations. Yes, its pricey, but worth every penny."

  • "I took my wife here for her birthday. It was wonderful. From the food to the wine everything came together perfectly."

  • "Really good food. For apps.. I enjoyed the Tuna Tartar in sweet chili and wasabi sauce with a nice Sauv Blanc from Loire. My wife enjoyed the gulf fried oysters with a amazing Cali Chard. Entrees included the smoked ribeye and Muscovy Duck breast. with a Grand Cru Bordeaux. Creme Brûlée awaited my wife and a nice Port for me topped off a wonderful meal. The wine list is not huge but has something that everyone will like. One would expect to pay Lots of money but not the case at all... definitely worth the trip"

  • "At a "5-star" restaurant, paying top dollar, I would not expect to be sitting at a folding card-table situated in the middle of the dining room, in the path of every server going to their tables. And the quality of the food did not come near making up for the seating issue; average food at best."

  • "We have gone to Bernardins a few times, but found this time the staek was too rare."

  • "Food was outstanding. Service was "occupied" but it was Valentine's weekend so it was understandable. A larger table near by of about 7 or 8 people was very loud and using inappropriate language. I will definitely be back. The chef does a great job with combining flavors and making the meal very enjoyable."

  • "My wife and I enjoy fine dining. In Winston-Salem, this list is limited to fewer than 10 options. Bernardins should be one of them. In previous visits to Bernardins, we sat outside and enjoyed the eclectic seating and pleasant atmosphere. Eating inside, on a special holiday weekend, the ambience felt more like sitting at the mall food court. Lighting was bright and tables were crushed in to maximize seating capacity. The waiter was friendly but not knowledgeable about the menu ("oh that is very good"). Additionally, she could not even attempt to recommend a wine pairing for particularly dissimilar menu items, nor did she offer to find someone who could. No more space to comment on the food. For $200+ (for 2), we expected much more."

  • "My wife and I had valentines dinner here at Bernardins, it was great. The steak and lobster was to die for. We will go back."

  • "I really enjoyed the original feel of the restaurant. The food was great, especially the sides. The beer list could be a bit better, but everything else made up for that. The bathrooms and the journey thereto was adventurous, but not suitable for older folk."

  • "My boyfriend and I were very disappointed with Bernardin's. We had heard great things and were really looking forward to it. Instead, the Valentine's Day atmosphere was very uptight and we were rushed out of there. The Valentine's Day menu had printed below to please not take more than an hour and a half, which is rather rude, and our server dropped our $85 bill before my boyfriend had finished eating or drinking his wine (I had completed my meal). We were there for a total of one hour. I had made reservations two weeks ahead of time, and at no point during our dinner was the room we were dining in filled. We are young professionals with doctoral degrees, and were dressed very well. We highly doubt we will ever return."

  • "This is one of the best restaurants in Winston Salem. The service is outstanding and the food superb. If you haven't been for lunch you are missing a real treat. Keep up the good work!"

  • "Great location in the West End. Beautiful old historic building. Parking lot available so don't worry about street parking. This is a "dressy" place (suits for men, nice dress for the ladies). You can get away with business causal. Service was excellent and the kitchen was spot on with the timing of the food. Decent wine list, great appetizers, and decent entrees. Tuna Tuna (tuna tartare and sliced seared tuna) was great but, it is a small appetizer. Calamari is pretty good. The ribeye was large and nicely seasoned. Note, If you are expecting Morton's then you better order something else. The Ahi Tuna was very good and comes with a strong wasabi mustard. If you don't like strong sauces then you might want to ask for it on the side."

  • "Exceptional food. We had the surf and turf. The lobster was great the crab cakes wonderful and the filet melted in your mouth. There were alot of tables crammed in the room so the noise level was high. The atmosphere was good but crowded and the wait staff was very attentive. Wish they carried more local wines. We have such great wineries in the area and most of the wine list was not local. This place is high on my list and I will go back!"

  • "I went here with my family for a birthday dinner, and it was a great choice. The menu had a great selection of food options with locally caught fish, locally raised meat and also some unique dishes such as kangaroo and bison. When we received our food, it was absolutely delicious! I don't think anyone left a scrap on his or her plate! If you are looking for a great place to have well prepared, interesting food with good company, I would definitely recommend this restaurant."

  • "The venison was the best I have ever had...tender, perfectly cooked, great sauce. Wasabi Shrimp Coctail was also excellent. My wife had the foigras appetizer (sp?) and it was perfect. Her entree was also excellent."

  • "Service was excellent. All courses & drinks were prepared very quickly. They even hold the door open for u on the way out. Decor was sufficient & offered a peaceful atmosphere. Me & my fiance both had their special for the evening. Some type of seafood dish containing lobster, lobster ravioli, shrimp, etc. It was very good except that the lobster was very tough. We both had a tough time cutting it, although it did have a good flavor. And the creme brulee was average. It wasn't that it was bad but not wonderful like creme brulee should be. Overall the experience was more than satisfactory & we will visit again. Love all the restaurants down in that area"

  • "Went out with a larger group to participate in the Big Eat! Bernardins is always a favorite of mine! Always great food and drinks. And a half price entree means I can splurge on an appetizer and some extra drinks ;) the restaurant itself is unique and beautiful. The staff is always on their game. Satisfied as always!"

  • "I wish there were more affordable wines by the glass on the menu. Or maybe some kind of nightly drink special, the food is already expensive it could be nice to feel like I'm winning somewhere. Lastly... SOUFLEE!!!! If only there were a SOUFLEE... I would've never left!!! Also good add on would be profiteroles"

  • "Food was OK but service was lacking. No one checked back to see how we were doing. Wine ordered when food came was not delivered until we had finished eating. Tables way to close together to have a private conversation. Quest next to us were seated before table was set with clean serviceware."

  • "Had a great meal, great service, wonderful environment....as usual. Their Lobster special is amazing, and everything else I have tried here is top rate cusine. Price is reasonable for the type of meal you receive, usually averages $50+ per person."

  • "The Zevely house was owned by Van Neman Zevely, who happens to be my GGGGGrandfather. As a genealogy and history buff, this was a great discovery. As a foodie, I cannot recommend Bernardin's enough. My Girlfriend and I had appetizers and salads....Mussels, Warm Goat Cheese Tart, Escargot, and the Heirloom Tomato Buffalo Mozzarella Salad. Next time we will get entrees which look to be tremendous. Simply one of the best meals I have ever had. Our waitress Amy was exceptional. The owners have maintained the building's architectural integrity yet have it modernized and tastefully decorated as well. If you are in Winston-Salem or the Triad area this restaurant is not to be missed."

  • "Great date night spot. The food is delicious, and I actually prefer this location over the one in Charlotte because the ambiance is more intimate and romantic."

  • "Despite having a limited menu and very attentive service, we did not feel rushed dining here on New Year's Eve. The kitchen was humming and the food was prepared very quickly. An appetizer, two entrees, a desert and coffee, and we were out in just about an hour. We started with the escargot and then had the venison and lobster for entrees. Everything was perfectly cooked and delicious. I really enjoy this restaurant and it is my top choice in the area for special occasions."

  • "Bernardin's has a relaxed friendly feel despite the fact that the food is exquisite (and pretty). My companion and I shared a goat cheese tart appetizer and had wasabi/mustard tuna and scallops with risotto. Everything was delicious. Helpings were adequate for any appetite. We also shared dessert though we didn't need to. The wait staff was very attentive. Really like this restaurant."

  • "Out-of-the-ordinary food choices you would not normally expect. The kangaroo was totally unexpected but an excellent entree. The Surf and Turf offered a very tender filet mignon and the spinach was wonderful. The desserts were excellent and of a generous size. Remember to leave room when ordering your entree!"

  • "I always think of Bernardin's as the best restaurant in Winston-Salem, and tonight's visit was everything I always expect. The food and service were perfect. It is expensive, but you get what you pay for. I hope to return many times."

  • "uncomfortable, Tables crowded together. Too much sauces covering the taste of the dishes................."

  • "Dinner was very good -- the food was well prepared, the service was excellent and the ambiance was refined. I had the lamb chops and my husband had the lobster special. Both dishes were cooked to order with the lobster being tender and not overcooked. The wine list is fairly extensive and the prices were reasonable (well, for wine in a restaurant). I would go there again and bring my family."

  • "Surf and Turf was delicious. Gluten free options available including a wonderful butternut squash soup. Cute setting. Server disappeared for 30 minutes right when we were ready for our check. It then took her 15 more minutes to get it to us because her disappearance made her so delayed in other tables too. So...I guess we just got to pay the babysitter for 45 more minutes...."
