Diner Reviews
  • "I was very disappointed with my recent dining experience. My wife is a native Chicagoan and had many found memories of Berfoffs. I decided to surprise her and booked a reservation. The food is cafeteria quality, which is fine, I ordered a burger and my wife ordered the taste of Berfoff, which comes with samples of most popular dishes and a dessert. She wanted to switch out the apple strudel dessert for another option. I was surprised when after the waiteress checked with her manager she informed us she could not. I clearly understand there may be a cost difference and would have gladly paided the difference but not to give your customers options is simply poor management. I can not recommend this restaurant."

  • "The Berghoff has something for everyone on the menu and the food is consistently good. We had the sausages and dark beer this time for a change of pace and enjoyed the meal."

  • "If you like unpretentious, traditional German Gasthaus fare, The Berghoff is the place! Excellent schnitzel, spaetzle, saurbraten and sausage. The creamed spinach is my favorite anywhere, including that served at the high-end steak joints. The decor is very Old World Bavarian. Delightful place, and a real Chicago landmark for well over a hundred years. Check it out."

  • "Our server was so great. Friendly, attentive and very good with my mother who can be rather difficult. I really, really, really wanted to love the place. My mother was in town and has many fond memories of what it was three decades ago. It's just not the same. The food tasted almost cafeteria like. My jaeger schnitzel was underwhelming with no trace of sour cream or tomato in the sauce. It really just tasted like a brown gravy. My husband ordered the brats were made from different types of game. The sauce was grotesquely sweet and very odd and there was no explanation as to which was which. My mother ordered the shank that tasted like it was slathered in tomato paste. But it was cooked really well and was falling off the bone."

  • "Everything was very good at this 100+year old restaurant. While nothing was great it was the total experience was greater than the sum of its parts."

  • "So sad to see this Chicago landmark that I finally got to dine in slip so low. Our waitress seemed barely interested in our presence. The food was delivered almost immediately all blobbed on a plate almost reminding me of cafeteria food. Even the European style décor/ambience couldn't save this experience. There must be better options in Chicago for German food."

  • "A little different from the old days but still worth a trip."

  • "My colleague had the white fish. It was okay. Meat on my steak salad was inedible -- cubed round steak at best. I could not cut it. Sent it back and changed to the Cajun chicken salad. My colleague was finished eating when it finally arrived from the kitchen. It was fair at best. Mango was so green that it was crunchy like a cucumber. No management followed up to ensure things were resolved and that we were satisfied. Before we paid, we asked for the manager and asked him to remove the salad. He did. He agreed that the cut of meat on the steak salad is inferior. What happened to an institution that we both loved?!"

  • "We chose this restaurant for a group of us with the hope that there would be a little bit of something for everyone all within a reasonable price point in downtown Chicago. Our group had variety of needs - vegetarian, food allergies, etc. - and our server was able to recommend or check on dishes to find something for everyone. The German-inspired cuisine was great - sausages, seasoned roast chicken, German dumplings, etc. The drink menu had great options as well - we tried some of the beers, and their specialty Manhattan was delicious (and strong!). I would not recommend getting drinks if you are trying to dine on a budget - but the food prices can definitely be budget friendly if you want delicious, unique dishes."

  • "This place is an amazing piece of history with wonderful German fare and killer drinks. Get the shot-n-a-wash, you won't regret it = ) Looking for great sauerkraut and German potato salad? THIS is the place for both, I'm reluctant to say this, but, both may have been better than my mother's (but please don't tell her!!!)."

  • "My wife made this reservation and it was great. I've eaten several times at the Berghoff Cafe in O'Hare Airport but this was the first time eating at the resteraunt. One of the things that drew us to this place was the gluten free options, the servers were very knowledgeable about the options and what everything made. It was great food and we would come back"

  • "Was still pleased with the food and service. Used to come here as kids and it has not changed. Food comes out a little fast though would like a little more time to get food after ordering."

  • "As a historic Chicago restaurant, this is a great place for business meals especially with the older generation who may have fond memories of the restaurant. Delicious food and fast service. Noise level is good and tables are spaced apart far enough to have more private conversations. My only disappointment is that I placed a request for a special sign for my guest on a dessert plate and it didn't come out. I was happy to pay for it but I wanted her to be surprised. Neither the host nor the server spoke to me about it so when it was time to order dessert, I wasn't sure if I should let her or if my request was coming out. I'm guessing that the restaurant did not see the note. Or if they read it, I wish they informed me that they can't do it."

  • "I had my first meal in Chicago at the Berghoff--in 1978--and have returned often for lunch. I love the basement cafe, but on this special occasion, I booked a table in the restaurant. While I miss many things about the old Berghoff (including the abrupt waiters), it's still a place to get a quality meal and decent service in the Loop. I only wish they would bring back the blue plate special lunches, but realize that they probably weren't good for the revenue stream. Sometimes, however, they were exactly what I wanted for lunch."

  • "I love German food, and Berghoff's did a great job of making my Old World dish. Since I am gluten-free I was thrilled to have multiple options for entrees. I had the mussels with risotto. The flavors blended nicely and the texture was perfect. I would definitely go back to Berghoff's when I visit Chicago!"

  • "I was very excited about revisiting Berghoff's but I was a little disappointed in the taste. It just didn't seem the same as years ago."

  • "A friend recommended this place to us. We are always interested in trying to new places and breaking out of the burger rut. Great food that my German Grandmother would love!"

  • "Went to this restaurant prior to theatre performance - did not expect lack of ambience and I attentive service. Food was decent for a reasonable price, but had more expectation for historic restaurant. It is geared more for quick lunch/dinner and looks more like a cafeteria inside."

  • "Still good but the food quality is not what it used to be."

  • "Having lived and worked in Germany, we always go to the Berghof when in Chicago as it gives us the closest to authentic German food as we've found in the US."

  • "Did not know what to expect, but the lamb burger was awesome. The server was very helpful and everyone was friendly. Will definitely return when I am in the Chicago."

  • "Our food was delicious - a Wiener Schnitzel was perfectly prepared, and a second platter of wurst was delicious, as well. The Berghoff is a family favorite, but with reservations early on a Friday evening, I do not appreciate being seated in the center dining room with the empty buffet serving table. It is a dead area, and the Berghoff needs to find some way to enliven this spot to make diners feel like they are more a part of the rest of the restaurant's ambiance."

  • "I was pleased to have my 20 something niece and nephew join me at my old Chicago favorite for dinner. They enjoyed the ambiance, the tradition and history of the space - AND the food and beers! I'm happy to have shared this Chicago classic with them and know they will re-visit it in future."

  • "Our waiter was very attentive to the wants and needs of our granddaughter. She was very happy with what she got and how it was prepared."

  • "A few minor items needed attention; the wall that our table was up against was dirty. I have made this observation to my waiters before but nothing ever gets done about it. Also , the coffee is very bitter. If I was not on lunch from work, a beer would have been a better choice."

  • "Great German food in a wonderful environment to eat! The menu is kid-friendly and the choices are outstanding!!!! My kids love to eat here very time we are in Chicago!!!!"

  • "great stop for good food and good prices when on a schedule. Service is relatively dependable. Our server took our orders for ala carte salads without saying that the lamb chops ordered by my husband comes with a full salad. We miss the old time waiters who knew the menu, the food and were always efficient and direct. The menu has been updated, has a full range of offering both traditional and new, and the food is well prepared and flavorful. Always a great place before theater or concert in the loop."

  • "everything was great...only issue, and a SMALL one... it took too long for the Strudel.... otherwise, it was fantastic!!"

  • "I eat here several times a year for lunch and am more than satisfied with the food and the service. This visit for a pre-theatre dinner was most disappointing. While the staff was friendly, they were inattentive. No one offered to refill our beverages or water. The food we ordered was overcooked, the potatoes dry and lumpy, the carrots were raw. Dessert, the apple strudel, saved the meal from total disappointment. It will be along time before we consider returning. Berghoff is a Chicago institution that my husband and I have eaten at since we were kids. Seems to be living on their reputation, catering to the tourists, focusing on the beer and not the quality of the food or service. Too bad. It could be so much more"

  • "I don't mind paying for really good food. Frankly the Wiener Schnitzel was very tough and full of gristle."

  • "We were so excited to see that Berghoffs had opened their restuarant and kept the German favorites on the menu. We went to dinner in late May on a Friday night and all of their specials were fish or shellfish. We both had the sauerbraten, which was just as good as we remembered it from years ago. Wait Staff was friendly and attentive and the other patrons were talking moderately. VERY Good if you like German food."
