All 3 of our dinners tasted so good we gobbled them up, no doggie bags here. It is excellent German food with fantastic sides. We need more restaurants like this one, food served so good without all the fuss. We have been dinning here for 30 years, I hope they always stay open.

We had an attentive waiter but the whole service felt rushed. As for the food, the breadbasket was lackluster--no traditional dense German breads but garden-variety rye and pumpernickel. The rest of food was okay but not great. Overall a disappointment.

We looked forward to going to the "legendary" Berghoff restaurant but were sadly disappointed. The service was slow even though they were not busy on a Monday night. Our waitress while friendly was ineffective. She forgot our drink order and we ended up not getting our beer until mid-way thru our appetizer. Then the main entrees came out way before we were finished. Terrible timing. The food was ok and there was not one beer on the sampler that we enjoyed. Terribly disappointed and will not go back.

We love the Berghoff, so, as usual we found the Schnitzel and Creamed Spinach to be outstanding. We were with another couple and asked for separate checks. Our server told us "no problem". However, when he brought our credit card bills to sign, he told us there was a 20% gratuity added because of the separate checks. Really? Maybe you should tell folks before you say "no problem". Not a problem for us and he actually came up short, because 20% is pretty standard for me and I do not compute it before tax as he did.

Nice ambiance with the warmth of wood booths and tables adequately spaced apart so despite being large and full, conversations could be held easily. Large selection of items are available, we choose standards, ox-tail and sauerbraten - both good. Service was efficient. A likeable restaurant, we'd certainly return.

I had not been to Berghoff's for a decade and revisited last week when I was in Chicago. It was as if I had been there yesterday. The food was still solid, the ambience had not changed a dust speck, and the staff was still very attentive. This is a charming place for sure.

I have to say I was really looking forward to dining here after people kept telling me this was the best German food in the city. Sadly we were disappointed. It had the standards for German food. We started off with the Mini Brat and Knockwurst plate. The sausages were good. We should have just stuck to them and had them for dinner. The potato salad was like no potato salad I've ever had both in Germany and the US and I wouldn't get it again. We had Jäger Schnitzel and while the pork was tender, the sauce wasn't like any sauce I've had in Germany on Jäger Schnitzel. Perhaps it is the regions I've been to. Overall: stick with the sausages and beer and you'll be fine.

This was one of the few times I wished I had eaten elsewhere. My white fish was over salted and off tasting. The corned beef sandwich only had cheese and sauce on one half. The service was good. The coffee was good. The German potato salad was good, but not as good as home made.

Stopped here for dinner after seeing the Halloween Haunts on Saturday 10/26/14. We were about 45 minutes early for our reservation, but they seated us right away. I had the Pinot Grigio and my sister had coffee. We ordered the Roasted Beet salad to share and not only was it excellent, they plated it separate and was more than enough for the two of us. I ordered the Salmon salad nicoise, and was little disappointed, but the salmon was excellent. My sister had the stuffed sole and it also was excellent. The bread was very good and the waiter was polite, but only checked back with us to see if we were enjoying the salad. Could not get his attention and had to wait until dinner was served to get another glass of wine. Overall good service.

I called to confirm our reservation & advise that we would have 7 dining. The host asked if we were celebrating anything and, I told her we were celebrating a birthday. She stated that the guest of honor would receive a treat. It took 10 minutes before our server came to take drink orders. Overall, service was slow considering the dining room was only 1/2 full. Also, when he took our lunch order I mentioned that we had a guest celebrating a birthday but the "celebration dessert" was never delivered. We also had to ask another server to ask our waiter to bring the check this was 10 minutes after another staff member had brought to go boxes and cleared plates away. Poor service made the mandatory 18% gratuity a little hard to swallow.

Berghoff is a Chicago landmark--and we hope it remains so for decades to come: to us, the go-to place for terrific German cuisine, and just the right beer to accompany it all. I had the pork shank this evening, and it was done perfectly; slid right off the bones, yet still moist and tender. Our out-of-town guest enjoyed the sausage medley, which he pronounced tasty in all respects. My wife enjoyed the simple (in its way) chicken schnitzel, done just right.

First time diner and had a client for lunch. Fantastic! It was different and good, which is tough to find when you dine out 5-7 times a week! The food was great and the service was wonderful. The setting is very open, like and old German beer hall without the benches, but with cool architecture and art. It could become loud when full and making conversation difficult later in the evening however.

We went for dinner and I most likely would ask to not sit in the giant open room (Century) again. We were next to a group that just got off a bus. I believe that area may be more for the senior crowd. We were with our two sons, 17 and 22. Our waiter was good and the food was okay. It was not a place I would recommend to visit. Although it looks like sitting either in the bar area or near that area would have offered a different experience.

It's always nice to find a good restaurant that makes it easy to be gluten-free. Their menu has a good selection of gluten-free options and clearly mark which ones they are, so you don't have to be obvious and "difficult" about it. Went here on the recommendation of our hotel. Service was great. The house beers (we tried two) were excellent, as was the humongous pretzel. Sausages were good as well as the weinerschnitzel. The only disappointment was the potato salad - the potatoes were still crunchy. I'm not an expert on German food, but I don't think that's the way it's supposed to be. Desserts looked wonderful but we were too stuffed to try any. I liked the historic aspect, too.

Took my 5 year old here for a late lunch on Saturday at 3 PM. Chose this time since I knew it'd be less busy and we could enjoy a quieter meal. In our section about half the tables were occupied. We were seated immediately and wonderful bread and water was brought out within a minute. Waiter appeared within moments. Hostess has given my son crayons and an activity sheet that contained a kids menu. My son loved looking at all the decor while looked over the menu. We opted to split from the regular menu. We had the Sauerbraten, followed by their root beer and Black Forest Cake. Everything tasted great but the cake was the highlight if our meal. I am a big fan of Black Forest cake and it was extremely good. Would definitely go back.

Our office went to lunch at the Berghoff Restaurant and like most Loop office workers, want to get a good meal as efficiently as possible. The service here is always good, meals are served without delay, and the German fare is varied and well prepared. Prices are reasonable for a sit-down restaurant in the Loop. We've been here many times before and will be back again. I'm particularly fond of the Berghoff root beer, which is sweet and mildly effervescent.

Berghoffs has great food (I love their sauerbraten), very friendly service that really knows the menu, and is the last of the real old school german beer halls. Cannot wait to go back. I took a first date there for dinner as it is close to both of our offices. I told the waitress we were going to be her slow table tonight (getting to know each other, talking, laughing). The waitress suggested a beer to help the conversation (Oktoberfest!) and told us to take our time and just let her know when we were ready. The waitress was very sweet and checked up on us from time to time.

I was very disappointed with my recent dining experience. My wife is a native Chicagoan and had many found memories of Berfoffs. I decided to surprise her and booked a reservation. The food is cafeteria quality, which is fine, I ordered a burger and my wife ordered the taste of Berfoff, which comes with samples of most popular dishes and a dessert. She wanted to switch out the apple strudel dessert for another option. I was surprised when after the waiteress checked with her manager she informed us she could not. I clearly understand there may be a cost difference and would have gladly paided the difference but not to give your customers options is simply poor management. I can not recommend this restaurant.
