This was one of the few times I wished I had eaten elsewhere. My white fish was over salted and off tasting. The corned beef sandwich only had cheese and sauce on one half. The service was good. The coffee was good. The German potato salad was good, but not as good as home made.

Stopped here for dinner after seeing the Halloween Haunts on Saturday 10/26/14. We were about 45 minutes early for our reservation, but they seated us right away. I had the Pinot Grigio and my sister had coffee. We ordered the Roasted Beet salad to share and not only was it excellent, they plated it separate and was more than enough for the two of us. I ordered the Salmon salad nicoise, and was little disappointed, but the salmon was excellent. My sister had the stuffed sole and it also was excellent. The bread was very good and the waiter was polite, but only checked back with us to see if we were enjoying the salad. Could not get his attention and had to wait until dinner was served to get another glass of wine. Overall good service.

I called to confirm our reservation & advise that we would have 7 dining. The host asked if we were celebrating anything and, I told her we were celebrating a birthday. She stated that the guest of honor would receive a treat. It took 10 minutes before our server came to take drink orders. Overall, service was slow considering the dining room was only 1/2 full. Also, when he took our lunch order I mentioned that we had a guest celebrating a birthday but the "celebration dessert" was never delivered. We also had to ask another server to ask our waiter to bring the check this was 10 minutes after another staff member had brought to go boxes and cleared plates away. Poor service made the mandatory 18% gratuity a little hard to swallow.

The Berghoff is a Chicago institution. I try to go there whenever I return to Chicago. The fin-de-sciel decor, historical photographs, warm and welcoming atmosphere make it a wonderful restaurant with reliably great food and service. Long may it continue to be so.

Berghoff is a Chicago landmark--and we hope it remains so for decades to come: to us, the go-to place for terrific German cuisine, and just the right beer to accompany it all. I had the pork shank this evening, and it was done perfectly; slid right off the bones, yet still moist and tender. Our out-of-town guest enjoyed the sausage medley, which he pronounced tasty in all respects. My wife enjoyed the simple (in its way) chicken schnitzel, done just right.

First time diner and had a client for lunch. Fantastic! It was different and good, which is tough to find when you dine out 5-7 times a week! The food was great and the service was wonderful. The setting is very open, like and old German beer hall without the benches, but with cool architecture and art. It could become loud when full and making conversation difficult later in the evening however.

The large dining room was closed, due to a function, I think. We sat in the smaller dining room area and due mostly to the proximity to the bar, it was painfully noisy. The food and service were good.

We went for dinner and I most likely would ask to not sit in the giant open room (Century) again. We were next to a group that just got off a bus. I believe that area may be more for the senior crowd. We were with our two sons, 17 and 22. Our waiter was good and the food was okay. It was not a place I would recommend to visit. Although it looks like sitting either in the bar area or near that area would have offered a different experience.

It's always nice to find a good restaurant that makes it easy to be gluten-free. Their menu has a good selection of gluten-free options and clearly mark which ones they are, so you don't have to be obvious and "difficult" about it. Unless you need to follow this diet, you can't imagine how much we appreciate that!

Went here on the recommendation of our hotel. Service was great. The house beers (we tried two) were excellent, as was the humongous pretzel. Sausages were good as well as the weinerschnitzel. The only disappointment was the potato salad - the potatoes were still crunchy. I'm not an expert on German food, but I don't think that's the way it's supposed to be. Desserts looked wonderful but we were too stuffed to try any. I liked the historic aspect, too.

Took my 5 year old here for a late lunch on Saturday at 3 PM. Chose this time since I knew it'd be less busy and we could enjoy a quieter meal. In our section about half the tables were occupied. We were seated immediately and wonderful bread and water was brought out within a minute. Waiter appeared within moments. Hostess has given my son crayons and an activity sheet that contained a kids menu. My son loved looking at all the decor while looked over the menu. We opted to split from the regular menu. We had the Sauerbraten, followed by their root beer and Black Forest Cake. Everything tasted great but the cake was the highlight if our meal. I am a big fan of Black Forest cake and it was extremely good. Would definitely go back.

The food was very good, not the best German food I have had but good. The totally unacceptable part of the meal was when the appetizers came out (after some time after ordering) and within 30 seconds the entrees were brought out. i don't fault the waiter entirely as I had the feeling the restaurant works at their pace not the customers. I would not go back there.

Our office went to lunch at the Berghoff Restaurant and like most Loop office workers, want to get a good meal as efficiently as possible. The service here is always good, meals are served without delay, and the German fare is varied and well prepared. Prices are reasonable for a sit-down restaurant in the Loop. We've been here many times before and will be back again. I'm particularly fond of the Berghoff root beer, which is sweet and mildly effervescent.

Berghoffs has great food (I love their sauerbraten), very friendly service that really knows the menu, and is the last of the real old school german beer halls. Cannot wait to go back. I took a first date there for dinner as it is close to both of our offices. I told the waitress we were going to be her slow table tonight (getting to know each other, talking, laughing). The waitress suggested a beer to help the conversation (Oktoberfest!) and told us to take our time and just let her know when we were ready. The waitress was very sweet and checked up on us from time to time.

The food at Berghoff is always good. The portions are very large. The salads are fresh and delicious. The noise can ramp up when the bar is full so perhaps the other room is better. We always eat here when in Chicago. They always accommodate and the food doesn't disappoint. Very good beer list and wine list is acceptable. Very affordable.

I was very disappointed with my recent dining experience. My wife is a native Chicagoan and had many found memories of Berfoffs. I decided to surprise her and booked a reservation. The food is cafeteria quality, which is fine, I ordered a burger and my wife ordered the taste of Berfoff, which comes with samples of most popular dishes and a dessert. She wanted to switch out the apple strudel dessert for another option. I was surprised when after the waiteress checked with her manager she informed us she could not. I clearly understand there may be a cost difference and would have gladly paided the difference but not to give your customers options is simply poor management. I can not recommend this restaurant.

If you like unpretentious, traditional German Gasthaus fare, The Berghoff is the place! Excellent schnitzel, spaetzle, saurbraten and sausage. The creamed spinach is my favorite anywhere, including that served at the high-end steak joints. The decor is very Old World Bavarian. Delightful place, and a real Chicago landmark for well over a hundred years. Check it out.

Our server was so great. Friendly, attentive and very good with my mother who can be rather difficult. I really, really, really wanted to love the place. My mother was in town and has many fond memories of what it was three decades ago. It's just not the same. The food tasted almost cafeteria like. My jaeger schnitzel was underwhelming with no trace of sour cream or tomato in the sauce. It really just tasted like a brown gravy. My husband ordered the brats were made from different types of game. The sauce was grotesquely sweet and very odd and there was no explanation as to which was which. My mother ordered the shank that tasted like it was slathered in tomato paste. But it was cooked really well and was falling off the bone.

So sad to see this Chicago landmark that I finally got to dine in slip so low. Our waitress seemed barely interested in our presence. The food was delivered almost immediately all blobbed on a plate almost reminding me of cafeteria food. Even the European style décor/ambience couldn't save this experience. There must be better options in Chicago for German food.

My colleague had the white fish. It was okay. Meat on my steak salad was inedible -- cubed round steak at best. I could not cut it. Sent it back and changed to the Cajun chicken salad. My colleague was finished eating when it finally arrived from the kitchen. It was fair at best. Mango was so green that it was crunchy like a cucumber. No management followed up to ensure things were resolved and that we were satisfied. Before we paid, we asked for the manager and asked him to remove the salad. He did. He agreed that the cut of meat on the steak salad is inferior. What happened to an institution that we both loved?!

We chose this restaurant for a group of us with the hope that there would be a little bit of something for everyone all within a reasonable price point in downtown Chicago. Our group had variety of needs - vegetarian, food allergies, etc. - and our server was able to recommend or check on dishes to find something for everyone. The German-inspired cuisine was great - sausages, seasoned roast chicken, German dumplings, etc. The drink menu had great options as well - we tried some of the beers, and their specialty Manhattan was delicious (and strong!). I would not recommend getting drinks if you are trying to dine on a budget - but the food prices can definitely be budget friendly if you want delicious, unique dishes.

As a historic Chicago restaurant, this is a great place for business meals especially with the older generation who may have fond memories of the restaurant. Delicious food and fast service. Noise level is good and tables are spaced apart far enough to have more private conversations. My only disappointment is that I placed a request for a special sign for my guest on a dessert plate and it didn't come out. I was happy to pay for it but I wanted her to be surprised. Neither the host nor the server spoke to me about it so when it was time to order dessert, I wasn't sure if I should let her or if my request was coming out. I'm guessing that the restaurant did not see the note. Or if they read it, I wish they informed me that they can't do it.
