Diner Reviews
  • "As a historic Chicago restaurant, this is a great place for business meals especially with the older generation who may have fond memories of the restaurant. Delicious food and fast service. Noise level is good and tables are spaced apart far enough to have more private conversations. My only disappointment is that I placed a request for a special sign for my guest on a dessert plate and it didn't come out. I was happy to pay for it but I wanted her to be surprised. Neither the host nor the server spoke to me about it so when it was time to order dessert, I wasn't sure if I should let her or if my request was coming out. I'm guessing that the restaurant did not see the note. Or if they read it, I wish they informed me that they can't do it."

  • "Came here on a trip to Chicago. Excellent food, huge menu, microbrew beer, and fantastic service."

  • "I had my first meal in Chicago at the Berghoff--in 1978--and have returned often for lunch. I love the basement cafe, but on this special occasion, I booked a table in the restaurant. While I miss many things about the old Berghoff (including the abrupt waiters), it's still a place to get a quality meal and decent service in the Loop. I only wish they would bring back the blue plate special lunches, but realize that they probably weren't good for the revenue stream. Sometimes, however, they were exactly what I wanted for lunch."

  • "I love German food, and Berghoff's did a great job of making my Old World dish. Since I am gluten-free I was thrilled to have multiple options for entrees. I had the mussels with risotto. The flavors blended nicely and the texture was perfect. I would definitely go back to Berghoff's when I visit Chicago!"

  • "I was very excited about revisiting Berghoff's but I was a little disappointed in the taste. It just didn't seem the same as years ago."

  • "A friend recommended this place to us. We are always interested in trying to new places and breaking out of the burger rut. Great food that my German Grandmother would love!"

  • "Went to this restaurant prior to theatre performance - did not expect lack of ambience and I attentive service. Food was decent for a reasonable price, but had more expectation for historic restaurant. It is geared more for quick lunch/dinner and looks more like a cafeteria inside."

  • "Still good but the food quality is not what it used to be."

  • "Having lived and worked in Germany, we always go to the Berghof when in Chicago as it gives us the closest to authentic German food as we've found in the US."

  • "Did not know what to expect, but the lamb burger was awesome. The server was very helpful and everyone was friendly. Will definitely return when I am in the Chicago."

  • "Our food was delicious - a Wiener Schnitzel was perfectly prepared, and a second platter of wurst was delicious, as well. The Berghoff is a family favorite, but with reservations early on a Friday evening, I do not appreciate being seated in the center dining room with the empty buffet serving table. It is a dead area, and the Berghoff needs to find some way to enliven this spot to make diners feel like they are more a part of the rest of the restaurant's ambiance."

  • "I was pleased to have my 20 something niece and nephew join me at my old Chicago favorite for dinner. They enjoyed the ambiance, the tradition and history of the space - AND the food and beers! I'm happy to have shared this Chicago classic with them and know they will re-visit it in future."

  • "Our waiter was very attentive to the wants and needs of our granddaughter. She was very happy with what she got and how it was prepared."

  • "A few minor items needed attention; the wall that our table was up against was dirty. I have made this observation to my waiters before but nothing ever gets done about it. Also , the coffee is very bitter. If I was not on lunch from work, a beer would have been a better choice."

  • "Great German food in a wonderful environment to eat! The menu is kid-friendly and the choices are outstanding!!!! My kids love to eat here very time we are in Chicago!!!!"

  • "great stop for good food and good prices when on a schedule. Service is relatively dependable. Our server took our orders for ala carte salads without saying that the lamb chops ordered by my husband comes with a full salad. We miss the old time waiters who knew the menu, the food and were always efficient and direct. The menu has been updated, has a full range of offering both traditional and new, and the food is well prepared and flavorful. Always a great place before theater or concert in the loop."

  • "I eat here several times a year for lunch and am more than satisfied with the food and the service. This visit for a pre-theatre dinner was most disappointing. While the staff was friendly, they were inattentive. No one offered to refill our beverages or water. The food we ordered was overcooked, the potatoes dry and lumpy, the carrots were raw. Dessert, the apple strudel, saved the meal from total disappointment. It will be along time before we consider returning. Berghoff is a Chicago institution that my husband and I have eaten at since we were kids. Seems to be living on their reputation, catering to the tourists, focusing on the beer and not the quality of the food or service. Too bad. It could be so much more"

  • "I don't mind paying for really good food. Frankly the Wiener Schnitzel was very tough and full of gristle."

  • "We were so excited to see that Berghoffs had opened their restuarant and kept the German favorites on the menu. We went to dinner in late May on a Friday night and all of their specials were fish or shellfish. We both had the sauerbraten, which was just as good as we remembered it from years ago. Wait Staff was friendly and attentive and the other patrons were talking moderately. VERY Good if you like German food."

  • "Beautiful woodwork. Nice atmosphere. Slim vegetarian selections. The German menu item I wanted was out. Settled for the mushroom panini. It was very good though.. Wonderful sea salt caramel cheesecake. "

  • "Haven't been here for 30 years. Miss the grumpy old men. I think the food is more flavorful now. We went here just for the nostalgia and the rye bread. We miss it so much that we took some back to the hotel. Much more friendly waiters these days. Great beers."

  • "As always a great place to bring out of town guests as it provides a great sense of historic Chicago. The ambiance, especially the bar, is terrific and the food is good with something for everyone, including my gluten, dairy, meat free guest, available."

  • "Went to the berghoff after sound of music at lyric opera matinee. It capped offagiod day. Seemed others around us has thesame idea and no one was diss appointed. Sauerbraten was the highlight for us. Also the strudel. Yum And hope it is here for years to come. Will be back with the members of our family with celiac disease."

  • "We actually didn't expect the NUMBER of choices for GF in this classic German restaurant. The stuffed sole was awesome. Also, beer choices, Schnitzels, Apple Strudel, GREAT. "

  • "The food was quite good except for the potato salad, which was underwhelming, not creamy and a tiny portion. "

  • "We've been dining at the Berghoff for years, and seafood rarely disappoints, but this visit, the skate wing, while properly prepared and presented, was simply disappointing. I suppose when one eats fresh seafood, one sometimes gets a poorly flavored serving, and this was clearly the case. OTOH - the salmon special was quite good."

  • "The food was great....Service frendly.. could't ask fir more"

  • "For the first time since I've eaten here, the service was well below average. We waited at least 15 minutes before the waitress appeared. They were not that busy. "
    Dined on 5/3/2014
  • "The food (with the exception of the desserts) was very good. You could skip the desserts as they are not as notable as the rest of the food. The service was not consistent. We were seated promptly and orders taken but never offered refills on our root beer. Perhaps for $3, there is no refill, I don't know. The other caveat is to verify which parking garbage is validated as it can make a significant difference in the cost of parking. We had called 5 times to ask and no one answered the phone any of the times, so we ended up just parking at one of the garages close. It was the wrong one and had to pay $30 rather than $12 for the parking."

  • "Was in town for a meeting and looked for a historic dining spot near the Loop. Was very pleased with our evening! Staff attentive and kind. We ordered soup, salads, and the 'old world' entrees. Very pleased with the quality of our meals- great flavor and well prepared. Would go back next trip to Chicago. "

  • "Great location to eat before attending any of the theatrical productions in the Loop. You can find classic and updated German dishes or standard "American" dishes. They are all good and very reasonably priced. Let them know you are attending a show and they'll get you out on time!"

  • "nice family outing before seeing the sound of music at lyric opera. thoughtful waitress suggested items particularly suited to our son, so he had a fun and happy experience. lots of old german standards food and drink wise, feels like you are part of the cultural heritage of the city. check out the bar for authenticity and to see the first liquor license issued in chicago after prohibition."

  • "We look forward to a Berghoff meal whenever in Chicago & especially enjoy their famous homemade root beer. Unfortunately, the quality declines with each visit. Perhaps the management is trying too hard to diversify, rather than focusing on the food that made them famous. My generous serving of calves liver was so thin, it was overcooked/dry; & topped with a gigantic amount of bacon. Fresh vegetables are served al dente, which is fine, expect in the case of my undercooked German potato salad. The root beer no longer tastes homemade, although our server said it is. Berghoff is fine if you are looking for a Loop area family-friendly diner serving large portions, & if you want to feel a sense of old Chicago. It is not for foodies."
