Diner Reviews
  • "When I travel I enjoy going to places my home city doesn't offer, so in the Windy City there are many choices for ethnic food. Berghoff was recommended and didn't disappoint. The sausages and veal dishes were authentic , well done, served promptly and at a very reasonable price. Plenty of beer selections to accompany your meal!"

  • "We are so happy they reopened since our last trip to Chicago. A little disappointed in the sourbraten this trip- usually very tender, but not so much this time. Great beer - both root beer and the beer flight! Perogi's were wonderful! A definate must for history buffs too."

  • "Wonderful traditional and historic German restaurant with great food and service to match it. A fun divergence from the usual scene."

  • "Great food, reasonable price, wonderful locally brewed beer."

  • "I have been going to the Berghoff for decades, and brought some friends for their first visit. We had time constraints due to theater tickets, and the entire staff was attentive to giving great service and getting us out on time. Very pleasing, as usual. Love the historic aspects of the restaurant."

  • "My wife and I have a subscription to the CSO and prior to Saturday's program we stopped for an early dinner at the Berghoff. We have enjoyed the Berghoff on multiple other visits, but Saturday night was the most enjoyable one yet. The food was excellent. I had a traditional German meal my wife selected a halibut entree. Both were outstanding. Yet even as good as the food tasted, it was overshadowed by the exceptional service."

  • "We enjoyed the food, but there are better german food choices out there. It's the historical part of the experience that drew us there. Portion sizes are exactly the same for lunch & dinner, but are higher priced for dinner."

  • "We reserved a day ahead and our table was ready when we arrived. The appetizer was delicious as were the entrees. Our table ordered sole, chicken, and beef. Each was prepared well and was hot when served. The seasonings and sauces were very tasty and the service was excellent. Water and coffee refills were plentiful. It was a special lunch prior to attending the theater for us. We were in and out in good time. HIghly recommended."

  • "WE ORDERED DINNER BEFORE OUR SHOW AT THE CSO. WE ORDERED SALADS AT $4.95 EACH WITH OUR DINNER. WE DID NOT ENJOY OUR SIDE SALADS AT ALL. FOR $4.95 WE RECEIVED 3 SMALL TOMATOES CUT IN HALF AND A PLATE OF 'GARDEN GREENS'. NO CARROTS, NO CROUTONS, NO CUCUMBER, NO BABY LETTUCE, NO ROMAINE LETTUCE. THE ONLY GOOD PART OF THE DINNER WAS WE GOT A DISCOUNT CARD FOR OUR PARKING."

  • "The Berghoff is a favorite restauant whether we are going to the theatre or shopping. Great German menu. The restaurnat has changed hands within the family a few times and today's Berghoff is not on par with the Berghoff of twenty or thirty years ago. The wait staff has a lot to do with this. The current waitstaff is good, but not exceptional. The food is good but not exceptional as well. You must have their red cabbage and creamed spinach...both very good sides. We continue to return to The Berghoff more from tradition than for the exceptional food or service. It is part of the downtown Chicago experience and the price is very reasonable."

  • "Berghoff's is always a great place to dine and enjoy some great classic German food, excellent beer, and friendly/efficient service. Prices are very reasonable considering what other restaurants in downtown Chicago are asking. I always look forward to the next time visiting Berghoff's and I am never disappointed."

  • "Excellent food and very plentiful in this historic restaurant which, happily is still an Old Chicago gem. Prices very reasonable too!"

  • "Went here prior to seeing A performance at CSO, which is just a few blocks walk around the corner. Parking is convenient. Server was very attentive and friendly! Duck breast was cooked very well despite the skin being a little on the soggy side. Wife's scallop entree was wonderful! Very energetic atmosphere!"

  • "My husband and I were looking for a new place to try. I need a restaurant with gluten free options. Berghoff offered something for each of us. A delicious appetizer that we both shared and then fabulous dinners. The cheesecake dessert was to die for! I was able to eat it because they make the crust out of pecans!!!! Yum! On top of all that, the beer and cider were awesome as well. We will definitely be back! We loved it!"

  • "Great food, with very fast and friendly service. It's a big place and can get a little loud when it's full. They brew their own beer and root beer (it was delicious). It's close to the Art Institute and the CSO. I would go there again."

  • "I have been going to Berghoff's for 50 years and have always listed it as one of my favorite restaurants for its food and ambiance. However, on my last visit to Berghoffs I was quiet disappointed with the service and the attentiveness of the wait staff. We ordered a bottle of wine with our dinner (and was not offered their advertised half off on wines on Wednesday night) . . . Although the wiener schnitzel was excellent the side vegetables were not well prepared and "cheap" Overall the price of the dinner was much higher than it should had been . . . I was quite surprised to be served water with no ice prior to dinner . . . it seems Berghoffs is in a cost cutting process and not sure I will go back although I have life long memories."

  • "Being from Germany - we are always disappointed in "German" restaurants."

  • "Nothing beats The Berghoff for lunch or pre-theater dining. If you don't dawdle, you can easily be paying your bill in 45 minutes, and still have had a fabulous meal and not feel rushed. Their efficiency is not to take away from the great food--always superb, from German classics to fresh fish. Don't miss the rye bread or their own beer or root beer."

  • "The food items were hit and miss, some very good, some so-so (like my dry, flavorless duck.) The service, however, was excellent."

  • "If you want The taste of real Chicago you must go to Berghoffs"

  • "This is my first time to dine in Berghoff Restaurant. I had lunch with my friends there. The overall experience is just fine... nothing impressive. Maybe next time I should try their beer"

  • "The restaurant was wonderful. The atmosphere was very elegant, but not stifling. I made a reservation at 4:30pm, since we were planning on being there on a Saturday evening. A previous attraction ran us behind getting to our reservation, so I called to notify them and there were no issues. We arrived and the place was quiet (something that could be attributed to the weather), but I was still pleasantly surprised. Decor around us was an elegant wood and gold, but the reservation said casual dress and I did not feel out of place. Their Berghoff's root beer was outstanding, and their food was excellent as well. One of the waiters generously recommended dishes and brought a side of creamed spinach, which was amazing! Recommend for fine diners."

  • "We went out with friends who required a gluten free restaurant. Everything about our evening was wonderful. The food and service were excellent, and all of the wait staff were extremely helpful."

  • "The evening was great, but it was made really special because of Ester our server. She had great recommendations and was exceedingly pleasant. We will make sure to ask for her when we come back..."

  • "I had been to Bergoffs about 10-12 years ago and the food was great. Our recent experience was not so good. We found the menu lacking variety, the food was mediocre at best and the spaetzle was the worst I ever had as it was too small, overcooked and too salty. The entrees were not the great food as we remembered....What a disappointment..."

  • "My wife and I had high expectations as we booked a reservation. Upon arrival, we were not let down, as we liked the old-world dining space with Columbia Exposition murals. The beer and menu expanded our expectations. When the food arrived, it was bland. Not only was the food bland, it was way too fast. For the prices, we expected a higher standard. We felt rushed to finish our food and leave--not enjoy the food or restaurant. Probably would have had more drinks if we weren't rushed."
    Dined on 1/23/2014
  • "The Berghoff is still a wonderful, classic Chicago restaurant, when you feel like good German food. The menu has expanded, but we stayed with the German favorites--sauerbraten, wiener schnitzel, breaded pork cutlets. The strudel was great for dessert."
    Dined on 1/23/2014
  • "Great find! Food was pretty good, and excellent selection."

  • "I don't visit Chicago often, but when I'm here, Berghoff is always on the 'must do' list. No better German restaurant in the States. (Plus great bourbon and beer.)"
    Dined on 1/8/2014
  • "I'd never been to Berghoffs and didn't know the menu was based around traditional German food but handsome Eric answered all my questions and kept us laughing. I had the gnocchi and it was wonderful. I will go back and try the cafe in the future."
    Dined on 1/14/2014
  • "Stop making customers feel unwelcome just because the staff want to leave as soon as possible. This was nowhere near closing time. If you're not short of tables and a couple on a date want to drink and talk, let them."
    Dined on 1/13/2014
  • "Berghoff is one of the best known German restaurants in Chicago. It is a place to visit. It is not gret food, but standard German food. The interest of the place is mostly in its interior decor."
    Dined on 1/10/2014
  • "Berghoff has always been a favorite restaurant of mine. However, the waiter was pleasant but I got the feeling that he thought the three of us were college students who didn't really want to spend much money. TThen there was a bit of confusion when ordering--one friend ordered for the other friend and instead of asking if they wanted to share the order he assumed. The confusion was cleared up and he gave us a dessert on him, which was very kind, but it reconfirmed in my mind that the restaurant is more of a family restaurant meant for special occasions with parents who are willing to drop dough rather than people who are interested in dining and enjoying a piece of Chicago history that serves excellent German food and brews its own beer."
