BergamotWorth a tripIt was a rainy Thursday night as we drove from Hingham to Somerville to celebrate our anniversary at Bergamot. After an hour and a half on the road, we were beginning to question if we had made a good decision to head into town for dinner. That question now gets a resounding "Yes". Particularly memorable were the bread pudding appetizer and the pistachio risotto, and everyone from the front door, to our waitress and the rest of the service team couldn't have been warmer or more gracious. The Elisabetta - bourbon, amare nonino, and cynar - is a favorite. Wines by the glass were good value. Crispy mushroom bread pudding followed by roast chicken for me. The birthday girl had Mango ceviche, fish with peas three ways. The appetizers and dessert were the standouts. I rarely order chicken but was really happy that I did. The pea tendrils with the fish were really interesting. Dessert was a pistacchio financier - tasty and not too sweet. I know the food is described as American but I would not restrain it with this definition since there was some French influence. The waitress told me that the menu changes everything. It was simply delicious, I had the scallops while my cousin had the risotto and we both loved it. The $39 prix fix menu is the best deal in town for such a high class restaurant. A very European fine dining experience.5/22/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food at reasonable pricesI had heard that Bergamot was a very good restaurant and the Prix Fixe menu looked interesting (appetizer, entree and dessert for a set price). A few of the items added a couple of bucks to the set price but overall it had a good to slightly high price. I was worried that we were dressed too casual, but the wait staff actually wear jeans although the place still looks upscale.
The menu had a nice range of options and it was difficult to choose as they all looked great. And they really were great.

One in our party had numerous food allergies and the staff was able to offer substitutions without sacrificing the wonderful quality of the meal. The host was very accommodating and understanding even though it was a Saturday evening. When we were sat at a table, I felt like we received a good amount of attention. The food was fabulous and the whole experience was amazing. They remembered the note I left about my boyfriend's birthday and brought out dessert with a candle. I've been to this restaurant (which for me is a local one) a dozen times, and I've never been disappointed. The dishes are consistently both imaginative and delicious. My companion and I, who had recently been to Menton, agreed that the food was less élaboré but as enjoyable on its own terms, and for 1/2 the price. The wine list is small, but full of inexpensive gems from Loire and southern France. It complements the food beautifully. Service is warm and efficient but sometimes a bit over-attentive. We had the pork tenderloin and the broiled scallops both of which were excellent. The $39 (sort of) prix fixe menu allows you to choose one appetizer, one entree and a dessert. It is available anytime; however, several of the items on the menu carry a small additional charge if ordered on the prix fixe menu. It is still a good deal though. The well-edited menu offers something for everyone, and it's all as wonderful to look at as it is to eat. This is probably in my top three restaurants in Greater Boston. For example I have booked for wife's B-Day well in advance of date, and requested one of these tables only to show up and be told that they are reserved for other parties. On other occassions I have showed up with a party of 4 after advance booking and saw two of these open, and was told that others had reserved. The meal was more than outstanding for every course for every one of the five of us. Each morsel was just beautiful both to the eye and the palate. Very well presented and prepared. Who would've thought of Dessert with black olives but mine stole the prize.
