A word from Bent
Superstar chef Susur Lee designed the menu and still oversees the kitchen but hands over the reins to his sons Kai & Levi Bent-Lee. In this up and coming Dundas west neighborhood the boys have chosen a laid back vibe emphasis on great food and imaginative drinks. The decor also a family affair designed by the boys mother Brenda Bent and her partner Karen Gable.
Critics agree Susur Lee has done it again! Favorites include Tuna and Watermelon Ceviche, Chicken Dumplings, Slow Braised Five Spice Short Ribs, Kale and Tofu Salad, a decidedly Asian flare with house brewed sake. A lively environment with great service

Hilary called to confirm our dining reservation which was great. I mentioned that I was celebrating my friends birthday and that we are both working as Chef Concierge's in Toronto. Hilary noted that there was a possibility that Susur would be working. If he was then she would send him over to our table as we are both fans! Unfortunately there was no mention of my friends birthday until we were paying the bill and no Susur (that we understand). Considering that both of Susur's son's were working it would have been a nice touch to have them come by the table to introduce themselves. Especially because BENT is a new restaurant and building relationships with Concierge's should be a priority.

I went with two other women and we had a great time. We went with the Susurlicious menu and had some very interesting and wonderful things. I had the tuna and watermelon ceviche and my partners in crime had the kale and tofu salad. Both were AWESOME. The ceviche had a nice kick and the Chinese doughnut fritter was great - I would have never paired them, but fabulous combo. Then two of us had the Char Sui Duck and the other had the braised spiced short ribs. I think a better description for the duck is Moo Shu Duck. It was wonderfully flavorful and light. The short ribs were great. Finally the one miss was with dessert. The bread pudding which was great, but the sesame ball with chocolate and peanut butter was wasn't as good.

After having heard some not so great reviews I was a little skeptical about what to expect. But the food really is very good and the service was as well. They were very attentive and offered alternatives for gluten and dairy allergies (not all restaurants will do that!) and they paid attention when we said we were there for a birthday and they actually brought out an extra dish with dessert that said Happy Birthday written in chocolate - a very nice touch to end a really great evening. Don't believe the bad reviews - try it for yourself and decide.

Use of Asian elements is pulling its limit, matching in texture and flavours does not mean suitable emotions. Absurd overall decoration, nightmarish washroom walls. Where is Susur's superlative culinary genius? I can only taste it in the duck sauce out of all elements in six different courses.

We went for Susurlicious and were very impressed by both the food and the service. Original food parings made each bite a gastronomical delight! Loved the tuna and watermelon ceviche. The options for vegetarians were original and tasty. My only disappointment was the over priced wine list

Went for Susurlicious for $35 for 3 courses. Lee is much better. The Duck with foie gras and Asian slaw was the best dish. Braised beef was also moist and tender. We didn't like the chicken and shrimp tempura dish and barely touched it - too oily. Happily the server took it off our bill. Coconut shrimp curry soup had a nice hint of spice but not too much. Not much on the menu if you don't like sushi, sashimi, ceviche. All in all, I'm not in a hurry to return - Toronto has many other resto to try.

The food was a real disappointment. Crispy chicken/shrimp was anything but. Sashimi sampler was barely that. Susur himself was busy walking around the place. He should have been in back degreasing the dumplings and seasoning the food. Staff was friendly but they are rushed to turn over the tables and throw all the food at you in one lump.

Excellent raw fish dishes and some great cooked classics too (like Susur Lee's famous braised short ribs) make this a stellar choice. Great service too a good selection of sake. Only weak spot in my opinion was the desert which could use an upgrade in choices.

Food is amazing, drinks are fabulous , the interior decor of this restaurant is subtil and impressive at the same time. Only complaint.... Just to make one.... The wait for the first service, a little too long, but we were so hungry, that it seems worst!!! Overall...... Near perfection.....

Service - very poor!! Had to wait 40 mins before they took our order. Also, I ordered a glass of wine and had to ask 3 times for it because they forgot! They didn't even apologize. They overcharged me on the bill. Food - it is good, but the portions are REALLY small. For 2 people we ordered 4 dishes, the waiter said this would be enough. We were starving after! The taste is decent, nothing spectacular! Lee's is much much better. The 4 dishes were: -Sashimi Tasting (nice taste, but again very small servings) -oysters (tasted horribly) -special (red snapped and seared scallop - good dish) -seared tuna (best dish from what we got that night, a little too much wasabi in it though) Ambience - very trendy and nice atmoshphere.

The tables are very close together and long. Because they are long, people shout and its hard to hear the person you are with It looks like the specific food item is made in batches so that everyone around you gets the same item at the same time. However, this sometimes means a lot of you did comes at once. There is no order to the items that are brought and spacing doesn't seem to be considered. Food was good though, fun atmosphere and it was a good time!

It’s all tapas style, and we had 2 dishes that were superlative – the foie gras pate on olive brioche, and unexpectedly the tofu custard tempura, both were classic Susar deliciousness! The 2 least favourite, were the sashimi and the ceviche, not bad at all, just common and likely better at a Japanese restaurant. The other 3 we tried were all good as well, but not ‘wow’. The space is amazing though, and Susar was there cooking in the open kitchen all night, and came and talked to us twice, so that was really nice. We also spoke to one of the sons.

I was at Bent with friends on New Year's Eve. The prix-fix was tiny, and considering it was NYE and people were drinking, you would think they'd accomodate us with a bowl of rice when we asked for it, but they did not. Also, we called to say we might be 5-10 minutes late and the restaurant told us we would still have to give up our table 2 hours later. We ended up arriving on time (cabs were easier to find than anticipated), yet our table wasn't ready for 25 minutes (which they neglected to tell me when I called shortly before reservation time). In that time, nobody offered to take our jackets, or offered us a drink. My experience was horrible, I will never go back.

Spent NYE 2012 at Bent. I think they are operating with new or holiday staff, I dealt with a particularly stressed hostess over the phone, also received three calls to confirm my reservation, each emphasizing my credit card would be charged if I cancelled. It was a little exhausting. After arriving we felt a little pushed to get moving, started receiving food (as it was a set menu) 2 min after we sat down and before we had ordered drinks. We were also seated at a table in the walkway to the kitchen so asked to move. Despite all that the food was quite delicious and the service significantly improved once we asked to move. Our lovely Aussie waiter saved the day!

We were at Bent for my birthday. I am giving a poor rating for the service and overall experience, meanwhile the food was good. The staff was not very friendly nor were the owners - everyone lacked energy. We were a party of 8 and went with the Chef's Menu but I was highly disappointed with what was served to us for the amount of money we were spending - the portions simply did not make sense and if we add up the dishes individually, it should only come to $400 max including the small bottle of sake that we had. Throughout the night, I was apologizing for the bad experience. I regret choosing the Chef's Menu, it came to $750 for a party of 8 and my friends were still hungry.

Underwhelmed. I went here once soon after it opened and loved it! This time, 6 months after opening, I can't say I felt the same way. The food seemed rather bland and not like it had been made fresh for our order, the portions were miniscule and the service was a tad overbearing. After 2 less than wonderful experiences at the former Sasur's restaurant, I was skeptical about dining at Bent. I was also wrong. Bent is excellent. I've now had 2 great evenings here. Absolutely delicious. Surprising combinations of flavours and textures that made each tapas/shared dish uniquely enjoyable. Presented beautifully, and 'announced' as a party arrival might be, the plates were brought to the table (as they were ready) by attentive, professional - but warmly human - staff. Would recommend to anyone looking for a rich taste bud experience.

Unfoutunately this was a smaller, louder version of Lee. The food was sub par, the service was just ok and the restaurant was so loud I couldn't hear what my friend was saying across the table. The soup was was great but neither of us enjoyed anything else (except th chorizo with the dumplings-not the dumpling themselves) until dessert. Unfortunately everything just seemed bland.
