Diner Reviews
  • "While we eat at Benoit often, yesterday was special even by Benoit's standards. I enjoyed a daily-special appetizer (a tomato confit and anchovy flat bread) and main course (a steamed fish dish called Aioli, for the sauce it was eaten with) . . . even the simple steamed vegetables that accompanied the fish were noteworthy. My wife and the other couple with us were equally pleased."

  • "I had the tomatoes terrier for a app...it was the only part that was delicious...had the duck as entree...could not cut even with my broken tip knife let alone it was impossible to chew...spinach was marginally good and my date got the cassoulet and it was full of fat..gross."

  • "The staff were welcoming and attentive. We ordered from the pre-theater menu and loved every bite!"

  • "We went on a Saturday night, July 4th weekend and it was a quiet night. The decor and service is authentically French/Parisian. The food was very good."

  • "Perfect for dinner in very way. Was with three guests. Service was impeccable, food was delicioius and ambiance was perfect. This is an elegant place where one can enjoy good food and pleasant conversation. It is blessingly free of the noise and frenetic quality of most restaurants today."

  • "Two generations of our (partially French) family came together from Manhattan, NJ and Tampa and we could not have picked a more special place for the special occasion. The cassoulet will transport you back to Paris (or Lyon). Can't wait to return."

  • "Authentic French food, and service that was polite, not snooty, and attentive. Quiet as we were there for brunch, so can't comment on noise or vibrancy at other times. Good French wine selection."

  • "We had eight for dinner to celebrate a graduation. The food and service were excellent. We generally eat in Benoit during our trips to NYC. Looking forward to next trip and dinner here."

  • "We very much enjoyed the food and service. They were sensitive to our schedule and very accommodating. It has a great location relative to Carnegie Hall and is very welcoming. The entire restaurant staff greets you and serves you with a smile. I like the idea that a glass of wine is delivered to your table first for a taste and then to be poured from the Boyle in front of you - a very nice touch and way to serve. Keep up the good work! We'll be back."

  • "Benoit is one of my favorite restaurantes. Its cassoulet is the best I have ever had in France or in the US."

  • "We dine at Benoit whenever we have the opportunity to be in New York City for a few days. It is always a good meal with fine service and ambiance. It has never disappointed us."

  • "I was very disappointed with my experience at Benoit. The restaurant seemed more fit for the tourist/theater crowd than the local New Yorker who knows good food. The ambience was horrible and only filled with tourists and the food and service were equally dull. After our dinner came out very late, the waiter tried to make it up for us with some macaroons. I am a huge fan of macaroons but Benoit's version tasted like they were made the week earlier and stored in a refrigerator. All in all my experience was disappointing and I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants good French food."

  • " It's a wonder I never went to Benoit before but late is better than never. The hostess could not have been nicer. The wine had some very good choices, food was very good, the waiter very professional and friendly. We enjoyed the whole experience and would go back again."

  • "We first went to Benoit as a family with two kids then returned with a group 10. Both times were wonderful experiences for food and atmosphere. Highly recommended. "

  • "We went to Benoit after attending a comedy show. It was still plenty lively at 9:45. The service was great, the food very good and I felt like I could be in Paris. I had put a note on the reservation that it was a special occasion. Not only did they bring over a delicious chocolate cake with a candle, but the poured us all a glass of champagne as well. I will certainly go again."

  • "What a wonderful, authentic French Bistro dining experience! From the furnishings to the plates to the menu; this was a submissive french experience. if everyone around me were smoking i would have thought i was on Saint-Germain Blvd. (it helped that the staff as well as other clientele were speaking french.)"

  • "Food is really good. Seating of the guests really bad. Around 20guests in the restaurant all seated in the same area packed like sardines. Expected better service and more attention for such level restaurant. "

  • "The food was below our expectations, once based in a famous name(Ducasse) . And overpriced, considering the flavour and quqlity"

  • "I never fail to be transported back to a Paris bistrot every time I dine here. And....I never fail to be impressed with the food and the service. It was, once again, a beautiful evening and a wonderful experience. What more can I say???"

  • "I booked Benoit as a special surprise for my wife's 30th birthday last weekend, as it was her first time in New York and I was looking for somewhere special for a brunch, some cake and champagne. When we first arrived the maitre d just ignored us and was aloof and grumpy when she finally did acknowledge our existence, despite us waiting patiently and having a reservation. We should have walked away then. The brunch and especially the deserts were superb but the whole date was ruined by the staff, who treated us like we shouldn't be there, weren't good enough for the cafe, and were quite unfriendly, aloof, and inattentive. It completely ruined a date that I had planned for 6 months, - thanks Benoit, we won't be rushing back!"

  • "this was worst mother's day brunch I have ever had. from the start with warm bloody Mary to waiting 15 minutes for each item. two times for three drinks. first course took 30 minutes off of a special menu with very few choices. between the service and food I will spend my money somewhere else. BTW wasn't cheap. maybe being in that area they cater to tourist. "

  • "Chose to do brunch with my family of five for Mother's Day. Service was attentive and food was delicious. Children had great choices as well. So happy we tried Benoit and can't wait to go back for dinner!!"

  • "Walked past Benoit's on a visit to NY in 2010. Made a mental note. Went on line a couple of weeks ago when I noticed it would be Mothers Day when I wanted to have lunch on 11 May. So booked a table for two. The website is great for booking - very efficient and flexible. It was very busy at 12:00 but great atmosphere. Service was outstanding - so efficient and "sympatique" and the food was as expected - PERFECT! So next time we visit NY (from Aberdeen, Scotland) we will back (for dinner next time)."

  • "this is one of my favorite restaurants in NYC, I visit it every time I go there. The food is very good. I usually get the theater pre-fix for only $39 .. this time I got it and my appetizer was the twice baked cheese souffle (always amazing and really almost enough for a meal), then I got a grilled fish which was amazing, with a nice sauce and side. The dessert was a delightful chocolate cake. My companion got the cheese plate for dessert and it was very large -- too much food. I also like the cheese puffs they serve - although this time they were not hot enough. I am not overly impressed with the bread so tend to ignore that. My husband loves the chatruterie plate - very large and filled with meats and pates. And the caseloulet is good."

  • "I was brought for my birthday one year and had been back several times since. I decided I would bring a friend for her birthday, a real foodie and she just loved it. We had a lovely and not rushed evening. The staff and food are still wonderful."

  • "We were told by a friend about this restaurant and have been twice within the last year. That's a lot, because with all of NYC restaurants and us living 4 hrs. away it's something for me to want to visit the same restaurant twice in such a short amount of time! I do admit, tho, that the food on our first visit was a little better. A MUST is the cheese casserole as an appetizer!!! YUMMY!!!"

  • "This was a first time dining at Benoit. We were a party of 6. I chose it because there are so few really French restaurants in NY. It is very pretty and comfortable. We were given a lovely booth. Unfortunately, the waitress oversold the "pig", so 4 of us ordered it as a once in a lifetime opportunity. I thought it was okay, others were deeply disappointed. The pork is very well done and the flavor totally eclipsed by the salt and thyme seasoning. The appetizers were excellent and the desserts delicious. I would go back again and get the quenelles that I originally wanted to get. "

  • "Spent another lovely evening at Benoit; Chef Bertineau just keeps getting better, and I asked specifically for boudin noir which arrived perfectly seasoned with the creamiest mashed potatoes on the planet. The adherence to old-time French fare is ideal when one wants to get away from fusion or cuisine minceur. Others at my table had the fish of the day; they loved it. The French fries are among the top in town. Washed everything down with some cru Beaujolais, sleected by the friendly sommelier, and which went perfectly with our selections."

  • "i combines everything I love in a restaurant. The food is excellent and beautifully presented. Service is attentive and friendly, but still on the formal side (there's no 'Hi Guys, I'm your server ….' ). One very special plus: The staff knows the ingredients of every dish. Our daughter is gluten intolerant, and she was steered to all the items she could safely eat. "

  • "Having been to the original Benoit in Paris a couple of times, my wife and I were looking forward to dining at this bistro in New York. The appetizers were very good (charcouterie, escargots, etc.), and were tempted to make a full dinner out of the appetizer menu, but were lured into ordering the roasted chicken by memories of the juicy, tasty, tender birds for which French bistros are so well known for. We were disappointed; the chicken was overcooked, dry and tough. We may return because we don't believe this is the normal standard for a Ducasse restaurant, and, in any case, the appetizers were very good."

  • "Benoit is an excellent place to go for the feel of a Parisian Bistro. The staff is attentive and welcoming. The tables are far enough apart where you can hold a conversation. The food is always excellent. There is also a great little bar where you can order cocktails and tapas. I have been at Benoit several times and it has never disappointed. If you are driving to the restaurant, there is a garage directly across the street, which is reasonably priced in the evening."
