Diner Reviews
  • "Service was attentive, though the reservation was post-theater for a restaurant that caters to the theater crowd. Food was tasty but not outstanding. Good place in the neighborhood for pre-theater, lunch, brunch, a shopping break."

  • "The recommendation I read before booking cited the roast chicken as terrific, but I had one of the fish dishes which was exquisite. The fish was fresh and perfectly cooked. The sauce that accompanied the dish enhanced it further. The best fish filet I have EVER eaten. Must try the chocolate soufflé! Perfect!"

  • "The restaurant is really beautifully done, and you feel like you are in a real french brasserie. The food was really good, even if portions were not big though. My lamb was delicious and vegetables tasted incredible. We had 2 desserts each (!) Go without hesitation, nice spot, good food and friendly staff"

  • "Their prix fixe menu (until 6:30PM) offers a nice variety of mussels, skirt steak and scallops. Our party enjoyed the steak and scallops, cheese souffle appetizer and chocolate cake for dessert, all of which were excellent. Wines by the glass offered many nice and affordable choices."

  • "Our experience was not good. The service was poor. The staff was unable to understand my simple request, one that was easily accommodated. It was to serve my half of chicken I ordered as a whole piece and not cut it up. I made the request several times The food when finally brought to the table almost as I ordered it was only mediocre. Unfortunately, we must conclude the restaurant is not worth another visit from us. Nor can we in good conscience recommend it to others."

  • "Wonderful for French classics, cassoulet, quenelles. escargots, etc. Nice wine list by the glass or carafe. Perfect for before or after the theater."

  • "Great French food. Service is amazing. I had fresh trout that was amazing, deboned ! My husband had luppe de mare also delicious Get the profetiroles for dessert"

  • "Very good standard french. Feel as if you are in Paris at a cafe"

  • "I asked, "is this what a restaurant in Paris looks like?" and the person I was with said, "yes! In fact there's a place I eat at regularly that looks a lot like this.""

  • "Service and pacing very slow though server nice, seated 20 minutes before offered drink and resturant was not very crowded"

  • "Well-priced prix fixe. Very good gougeres. Succulent cheese souffle. Excellent asparagus soup. Steak a little tough, but cooked perfectly. Shallot sauce very good, but mustards and mayonnaise a bit of overkill. Potato gratin tasty and tender. Mussels and frites good but ordinary bistro dish. Lemon tart had excellent curd and crispy crust. Cheese plate (surcharged) was lackluster: camembert was too cold and rather tasteless. Wines a bit pricey, but wines by the glass and carafe available. Seating tight. Total bill about $150."

  • "Attentive service, good bread (baguettes and gougeres), real French hors d'oeuvres, excellent sauces at a medium-high cost and with only medium background noise."

  • "Benoit is "a must" for anyone wanting to experience a special culinary occasion in a special New York setting. It is one of my favorites!"

  • "Lovely bistro. Super service from all the staff, many of whom were obviously French, adding to the Parisian style experience. Great 'by the glass or carafe' wines, for when you want variety, without having to purchase full bottles."

  • "My group of 10 ladies really enjoyed this beautiful restaurant. We felt as if we were in PARIS. Portions were very generous and priced reasonably. The service was spectacular. We had a 530pm reservation and they had us out by 7pm for the show and we did not feel rushed. Perfect!"

  • "Hostess was unable to understand English, couldn't understand simple drink orders. Waiter returned three times to take lunch orders before we were ready. Subsequent delivery of main course was slow."

  • "Planned a BDay party it went very well. Staff was attentive. Food was great. Drinks were well made."

  • "Pleasant food and service. The daily special split pea & ham soup was tasteless and uninteresting, but the cheese soufflé was one of the best I have had. Entrees were decent size, rack of lamb perfectly prepared and presented, as was the duck l'orange. Would return if I was in the area, but the restaurant was pretty dead for a Friday night, which in itself is a little worrying."

  • "I have eaten at Benoit 6 times and have ordered everything on the menu so far. And I still will return. The food is always good to excellent, the service great. From the time you enter the restaurant, you feel welcomed as an old friend. I do not know why we had to wait 15 minutes to get our desserts, but we did not mind."

  • "Went here for the first time. Totally enjoyed the service and the food. Best soufflé I have ever had. The chicken was moist and flavorful. Further the small patisserie for dessert was just the right amount of sinfulness to compliment the meal. Will definitely go again."

  • "Took my friend here for her birthday. I have been here several times, and it has always been good, but for whatever reason, the service food and ambiance were exceptional on the evening we went. Friendly, professional and eager to please - flawless service. The food was deliccious and the bread was quintessential French baguette. We had the cassoulet which was perfection. I will definitely return - soon I hope!"

  • "Step into a Parisienne bistro and savor the experience at this great midtown location. The poached fish with vegetable steamed in a savory broth was delicious. My wife ordered the beef bourguignon which she loved. Suggest you end with the poached pear smothered in a bitter sweet chocolate sauce sprinkled with toasted shaved almonds. The wait staff is attentive but not over bearing."

  • "This place is not cheap for a bistro, and the food just doesn't measure up to the expense. The atmosphere is charming and the service was attentive and well-mannered, but folks looking for an authentic French bistro experience should look elsewhere. The duck confit, offered on the pre-theatre menu, was not crisp but rather soaked in fat and sitting on a bed of soggy overcooked potatoes. A freind's steak was tough. And the moules main course was really skimpy. Everything else was just ok. Not a terrible dinner, but definitely not worth the money."

  • "Alain Ducasse never disappoints, and this charming brasserie is delicious and affordable. We started with the table's choice of 5 bite size appetizers, the perfect teasers. iiThe loup de mer was outstanding, the Chatham cod and salmon very good. We ordered from the regular menu but there's a nice pre- and post-theater menu of either 2 or 3 courses. No time for dessert but they were tempting."

  • "The food is good but the service is slow and inefficient. At this level of price we can expect more."

  • "Alain Benoit's French bistro is truly like taking a trip to Paris! From the excellent French menu to the delightful French accents of the staff, you will truly feel transported. The decor, attention to detail, and delectable gourmet treats are as French as it gets in New York."

  • "I went to Benoit last year (so winter of 2013) for restaurant week with my friend and I absolutely loved this place. The waiter was very enthusiastic and joked around us, which made me happier compared to early that day with snowstorm. This time I went with my sister and my cousin because they asked for a great restaurant for NYC restaurant week. The food was great though the salad was bit salty and the dessert (pear, caramel ice cream) was bit too sweet for me. The main course (duck leg) was wonderful as well as my sister's trout was great too. Though the restaurant week is over, I would recommend this restaurant if you are willing to spend higher price for good French cuisine. It is filled with French styled interior and posters."

  • "We attended a performance at City Center and this was a very convenient restaurant. We were four and we all agreed it was a pleasant surprise. The service was efficient and the food outstanding. The best was a sweet treat we received on our way out. My husband and I shared it the next day and it was yummy. We will return even if not going to the theater."

  • "The food and service at Benoit are incredible. The staff is gracious, friendly, well-informed, and welcoming. The food is divine -- from the little gougeres and fresh bread that arrive at your table minutes after you arrive to the savory appetizers, entrees, delectable desserts, and finally, to the meringues they give you as you leave the restaurant . This restaurant is a sparkling, bright gem."

  • "I expected more because it is an Alain Ducasse place, but we may have ordered wrong. Service was very good even though we didn't order much and split everything except wine - we aren't cheap, just light eaters. We ordered 5 of the hors d'oeuvres and the duck breast entree to share. The hors d'oeuvres were unimpressive - I have had better, similar things other places. The duck breast was delicious - perfectly cooked - and the vegetables that came with it were divine. I suspect that we would have been happier with traditional appetizers and entrees, as this seems to be where the kitchen cares the most. I would give it another try, ordering more conventionally next time, but I would not recommend the restaurant to anyone until I go back."

  • "Suggested it as place to meet two long-time friends that I had not seen in a long time. The food starting with the bread immediately won them as fans. It is a grown-up place where you can talk and enjoy fine food. The wait staff were friendly and professional. Visually it is subtle, old-world charming and welcoming. Definitely it is a place deserving repeat dining.."

  • "During Restaurant Week when most restaurants have a fixed menu for a fixed price, Benoit was most accomodating in celebrating my birthday and made a special dessert. The service was great."

  • "Went with a friend during restaurant week for their prix fixed lunch. An excellent find among all of the tourist traps of the theater district. Delicious, melt-in-your mouth dishes. The service was perfection, not rushing us but delivering the next course right on time. Probably a bit expensive for us if it weren't restaurant week, but worth the treat in my opinion."
