Diner Reviews
  • "Even better than Peter Lugers !!! The steak was heavenly delicious and we even make new friends while dining in this fantastic restaurant!"

  • "Perhaps as good as a steakhouse can get. Service is excellent, steaks are as good, and perfectly cooked as steaks can get, sides are great and if you get the spinach or broccoli it completely (COMPLETELY) cancels all the calories you are getting from the steaks, and the ambiance is as good as any other steakhouse in NY."

  • "We were impressed with the service (outstanding!) and the food (incredible). 2 of us had fish (salmon and Sea Bass) and one had a petit filet. Everything was perfect, and the taste was great. My daughter thought the mashed potatoes were the best she has ever had. I loved the broccoli sauteed with garlic too. Did not try deserts, but they looked wonderful. Definitely going back for a good meal or a special occasion."

  • "The food was great as always a was the service. But we had to wait for 50 minutes before getting our table (and we were only two people), without access to the bar which was packed with people waiting for a table. The staff was really not helpful during this waiting period, as we asked several times if we should come back a bit later to save us the trouble of waiting. Very disappointing from Benjamin's..."

  • "If you are looking for NY style steak in NYC especially trying to impress visitors from outside the US, this is it !! Look no further. They have everything you need, nothing you don't. Great service, carefully prepared food, just a well run restaurant."

  • "Saw ad in travel nagazine and thought might be typical tourist place ... high priced, low quality! Wow, was I wrong! Started with Benjamin Salad for 2 which was delish! And tthe steaks here can ' t be beat! Enjoyed every tender bite!"

  • "I took my fiancé here for Father's Day and found a surprisingly delightful price fixe menu that was such a great value AND the same portion size as on the regular menu! Johnny the manager was very accommodating and so was our waiter. We have been to every steakhouse in the neighborhood except Benjamin's because of a few bad reviews.... Glad we didn't listen! The food was delicious, prepared exactly how we asked, the service was attentive yet not overbearing. We will definitely be back and take future out of town guests here as well. Thanks Benjamin's for a great Father's Day!"

  • "Steak and eggs were perfect -- great way to start the day. And, a great place to begin a Sunday walk (to walk-off the steak for breakfast)."

  • "The porterhouse here is better than Peter Lugers - plus you don't have to leave manhattan. Better than Quality Meats too - although families with kids may find Quality Meats more appealing. Ambience wise Benjamin's is a quintessential old school steakhouse so be prepared for lots of testosterone and noise. Canadian bacon and crab cakes are also heavenly. Finally the service here is excellent too. Incredible dining and culinary experience for any meat lover. "

  • "I try not to eat red meat that much, but when I do, the Benjamin is on the top of the list of places to eat. The porterhouse is amazing, the wine list is great, the salads are excellent, and the bar pours nice heavy top shelf liquors. Even the fish is excellent... The wait staff is very attentive and management walks around checking on folks. Get to know them. "

  • "Everything about this experience was great except for our steak for two. The flavor of the grill seasoning was wonderful and cooked perfectly but there was so much grissel running through the steak, very difficult to chew. I just expected better quality of meat. Hopefully this was just our steak because the flavor is really nice. "

  • "Noisy is what first comes to mind….certainly not a romantic find…good service and good food, even if prices a bit outrageous. We came the year they opened, not sure how long ago, and are pleased they are making it and have recommended to friends going to NY…food is good, portions are above average, but really pricey. I am sure most folks in there were on an expense account. The noise is incredible, we were upstairs this time, not sure which is worse, but we had to lean in to hear ourselves talk. "

  • "Great service and with a smile. Restaurant honored my seating request, precisely. Server was friendly and authentic. Steak was just terrific. Exactly as ordered. Sides were heavenly. Busboy was magical. Produced "take away" bones for three dogs belonging to my guests!! Just outstanding. No problem serving our large party. Recommending to all of my steak lover friends. Oh and the raw bar choices were great. Fantastic clams, oysters and crabmeat(cooked of course)."

  • "Took a business client for dinner on Thursday night: 7:30 reservation for four. We were seated at a table large enough for two at best in the middle of the room where I had to sit with my back against a column. Service was great although could not accommodate our request for a better table. Steak is decent, but comes out in a pool of drippings and butter. I get it, that's their style, but to me when I order a steak I WANT TO TASTE STEAK... not drippings and butter. Sorry for the disappointing review, but if I'm going to spend $1,000 on a steak dinner there are better places to dine in the Big Apple! Cheers."

  • "We started with the tomato and onion salad--beautiful beefsteak tomatoes and mild sweet Vidalia onions. This went surprisingly well with Benjamin's proprietary steak sauce, which has a touch of sweetness and vinegar both. The Porterhouse steak we had for two was perfectly cooked and tender. The waiter was great. We had traveled all day, and were ready to be looked after with courtesy and style, and we found it!"

  • "Like all typical NY Steakhouses, it is very noisy and the service is a bit rushed to turn the table. Not a place if you want quiet, relaxed and romantic."

  • "Big pieces of meat, the potatoes are delicious and the creamy spinach so good ! Perfect cooking. They have a notable wine list. Best steak house ever !!!!! You have to try !"

  • "Came here for a business dinner. Waiters were attentive and food for recommending sides on the menu. The steak was cooked to perfection and the choice of new and old world wines were reasonable. "

  • "Had a late dinner here and food was good but unfortunately not a meal we would remember. We arrived 10 mins late but we still had to wait for our table. Were initially seated at a poor table in the middle of busy aisle so asked to change. Service was very slow bearing in mind it was late and we only ordered mains. It took 15 minutes to get our wine and then another long wait to get the food. Waiter was friendly towards the end of our meal. I would have preferred to chose a smaller size of the fillet mignon as the portion was too big. The porterhouse steak was also huge. Steaks were good and cooked as requested but would probably try another steakhouse next time. "

  • "I had been there the day before for lunch... it was wonderful!!!! Unfortunately, I was not real impressed for lack of having to wait for a table 45 mins when I had a reservations and people who had to drive home out of state. I was a guest of the hotel which this restaurant sits in their lobby."

  • "The menu is mediocre for a business lunch. They have soups, salads and some sandwiches. The lobster bisque was very good, the ribeye sandwich and cheesesteak were merely decent. It was quiet, which is good for carrying on a discussion. All in, I would not break my neck to go again, but if I was in the area, it is certainly adequate."

  • "Overall very good- food was appropriately prepared and served hot and timely. The baked clams were superb! The steak was excellent. One draw back was the restaurant was VERY VERY noisy. "

  • "This was our 3 time at Benjamin's, and we were looking forward for another great meal. This was disrupted by the fact that the food came way before the wine, then cork on the wine broke into pices. And the waiter tried to remove it by filtering it thru paper towel.. When we finaly got another bottle, we were basicly finnished eating. They did gave us complementary port wine, but the hole experience was not good. But as I said. Good food. "

  • "The place was ful, we waited at the bar for a while. The drinks were very good. Dinner was very quick. The Meat was good, right in its point. Siders not as good as the meat, but were ok. They have a large wine list from all over the world. Nice! Dessert was excellent! "

  • "Considering the sheer number of times I've eaten here in the past, we were effectively treated like we didn't exist. Reservation was for 7:15 and we didn't sit until 7:45 (if diners are half an hour late OpenTable docks you for not holding up your end of the bargain, so why aren't restaurants held to the same standard?) Host staff was rude and inattentive, general "holier-than-thou" vibe. This is aside from the fact that we watched *several* parties of 2 come in after us and sit before us, so I'm rather displeased with the whole ordeal. Food was overcooked but it's steak so how bad could it be. Waiters were rude and acted like they were above everyone sitting there. Considering the glut of steakhouses I may look elsewhere in the future."

  • "It was fine and they do know how to cook a good steak. However, it's hard to tell where consciously offering a traditional steakhouse experience leaves off and being old and tired picks up. There was not a single thing on the the menu that looked interesting or fresh. "

  • "Did you eat good meat in NY without the traditional barbecue seasoning. I went on Trip Advisor and based on assessments made my reservation through OpenTable in the same cell. I highly recommend booking. I got there and it was all ok and has led me to the table. The atmosphere is fantastic. Really not many tourists. Now BEEF .... SENSATIONAL! Served at the right point. Very tasty! The Merlot served was very good! The waiters are very friendly and professional! Always attentive! Great place! The price is consistent with what we offer. Fair!"

  • "Had never been here before, told it was really good and a cool ambiance. I loved the ambiance, lots of wood, energy, sat on the balcony (Highly recommend if you go) the food, well when you pay what you do at the Lugar level steakhouses its not cheap, but worth it. In this case i was with a friend, she ordered the Filet, I ordered the Ribeye, both Medium rare. We also ordered the onion rings and steak Fries, received onion rings and cottage fries (Potato chips) , big and Good! but not what we ordered. Got the steaks and both were mediums (Barely pink) Always give a place two or three chances, first not so good, but friendly staff."

  • "With all of the choices for a terrific "steakhouse experience" in Manhattan, Benjamin's is now at the top of my list. Visited for the first time last Friday night. We were seated immediately, upstairs on the railing, and as other reviewers noted, this is where you want to sit! Intimate, without feeling stuffy or crammed. Service was superb without being ostentatious or snotty. Amazing shimp cocktail appetizer was followed by what I now consider to be the best filet I have ever had. Nice a crusty on the outside, pink (med. rare, as I like it!) on the inside and tender enough to cut with your fork. Sides were equally delicious. Save room for dessert - terrific pecan pie. "

  • "Be ready to eat A LOT, as you will receive large portions of tasty food at Benjamins. We started with an appetizer of oysters on the half shell, shrimp cocktail and their tomato and onion salad. All of it was fresh and delicious, with generous portions. For the entree, we went with "steak for 2", which was a perfectly cooked porterhouse, with sides of mushrooms and broccoli. We did not try dessert as we were more than full. I would definitely go back."

  • "New York Steak, one thing I will truly miss when I leave. Very traditional, much like Peter Lugar's, the vibe is amazing, always full house. The steak doesn't ever go wrong. Perfect for afterwork get together, old friends, sit down steak dinner. Can't get a reservation at Peter Lugar's? Heres the next one you should go to, the food and everything is pretty much the same. Go see for yourself! "

  • "Thoroughly enjoyed by all. Everyone had something different and one course was better than the last. Three of us went with the prix fix fix menu and was pleasantly surprised that the portions were so large. the steaks and lamb chops were perfectly cooked to order and the sides were enough to share. Even though we were quite full from dinner it was too hard not to try those desserts---the berry plate was so fresh and delicious, the chocolate mousse was so creamy...we'll be back!"
