Benjamin is a lovely and modern space, not too loud, especially if seated upstairs. The service is attentive. I've dined there several times, and I always think the food is ok. i don't find the menu or the preparation to be any thing out of the ordinary. Having said that, I will go back again because we are very low on fine dining options on the North Shore.

This was my first time at Benjamin I heard they had a new menu and wanted to try it out. We were seated right at our reservation time. The wait staff was very friendly and attendant. The food was outstanding! The Beet salad was excellent, as was our friend's grilled cesar salad - and the portions were very generous. My Moroccan Stew had rich flavors and lots of seafood while my husband's beef ribs were tender and perfect. The dinner was priced right where we would expect for a Saturday evening out. We will definitely go back.

Went there last Saturday night, after purchasing a Groupon. What a wonderful surprise. We were seated upstairs and for a time had the upstairs to ourselves. The food was wonderful, especially the caesar salad with white anchovies, the tuna and shrimp special, in a very flavorable broth. Who would have thought that coconut crusted tuna could be so delicious. The dessert that we shared--bananas with caramel sauce in an open crepe, with ice cream on the side, was to die for. Some slight negatives--the chicken was a little dry and the wine by the glass selection somewhat limited.

I felt that $14.95 was extreme from gnocci with butter and cheese. Also, the server was more attentive to the larger parties. Otherwise, I enjoyed the dining experience.

What a surprise! Fresh decor, excellent food- the use of in-season ingredients means the menu changes with the season and you may not find your signature favorite- but the chef is up to the task and keeps the menu fresh (pun intended). A good wine selection and an attentive staff tops off a lovely evening.

Wonderful Valentine dinner. The dinner was a set five course meal with two options for each course. My husband and I decided it would be fun to order each offering for each course and taste everything. It was the right thing to do. We loved all the food. We were amazed that this was only $50 each. It would have been a bargain at $60.

  • Food was good. Pretzels instead
    OpenTable Diner Since 2007
    Dined on 2/9/2013
Food was good. Pretzels instead of bread was interesting although the cheese/mustard sauce served with them was nothing special. We have eaten at several other similar type of places where the food was just as good or better and the prices were a little lower. Also, all wines by the glass were listed as house wines instead of by the winery and vintage. You had to order a bottle to get a named wine. That drove my husband crazy as he is a bit of of wine junkie. The house wines might have been good but we didn't order. Nice atmosphere. We would go back again but not necessarily at the top of our list.

The reastaurant is nice. Some of the food we tried was very good some was average. My main issue is the wine list was horrible. They have only a few house wines by the glass and the bottle list was below par. The only wines worth ordering were over $100 which wasn't what we were looking for.

What a find! We were going to the Renaissance Theatre, in Highland Park, and looked on Open Table for a Highland Park restaurant. We got so lucky! Benjamin has superb food, service and ambiance. Every staff member knows and understands the interesting, varied ingredients masterfully used in each dish. We chose the mushroom soup, shaved winter salad, (don't miss!) buffalo skewers, salmon purse, and scallops for our entree. Each dish was more interesting, more flavorful, more delicious than the last...oh, did I mention the chocolate cake??? We can't wait to return! (Excellent cocktail, too! ;))

  • Best Restaurant in Northern Suburb
    OpenTable Diner Since 2009
    Dined on 1/3/2013
Consistently the best dining experience in northern suburb of Chicago. What we love about Benjamin is that it elevates every dish, even the most basic, to the realm of fine dining, but without the pretensions or special occasion prices. So whether you just want a wagyu burger and a cold beer or something more exquisite like the gnocchi with lamb shoulder ragu (my wife's been talking about it for days) or the shrimp, chorizo, calamari & mussel paella (each element perfectly cooked and fragrant), it will have you wondering if you've ever had one that was better than Benjamin's.

It was a cold evening in early January and we were hungry - and did we eat! I would recommend the vegetable salad to all vegetarians and am looking forward to returning for another helping. The other stand out was the chocolate bread pudding which is so good that it is worth the trip to Highland Park just for this.

Wonderful small neighborhood gem. Fabulous food. The upstairs area is my favorite. Book the "curtained" table for extra ambiance. Wait staff is absolutely outstanding. Bartender was a little snippy that night but all in all everyone is terrific. Not my first time there and will defintely go back.
