We were looking for a special night out for our teenage daughter's birthday and, having thoroughly enjoyed Teppanyaki before, we through we'd try Benihana at the Royal York. Expectations were high, we knew it would be an expensive night out and had hoped for a memorable evening of fun entertainment along with great food. The people in our group ate the filet mignon, chicken teriyaki and veggie dinner - all of it was very good, though not exceptional. However, we had hoped for an exceptional show. Our server was friendly and a decent cook but he did not wow us with any sort of culinary acrobatics we'd seen before. About the only thing we got was a tap of the salt shaker on the hibachi and then a fake throw of shaker towards one of our faces which startled us more than it wowed us. For $350.00 for an hour's worth of dining, we expect more. Nothing about it was memorable other than spending time with my family at dinner.

This us my 2nd time in Benihana. Food was okay, on the pricey side but it's in downtown so it is what it is. Quick service though I only saw 2 ladies working the waiting area & the teppan tables both sides! They were amazing women!

Service and the chefs were great. Food was prepared in an entertaining and fun manner. Quality of the food was excellent. The shared table creates a downside risk which has serious potential to ruin the dinner.

The staff at Benihana's were more than accommodating to our son with allergies. We traveled from Burlington to celebrate my son's 19th birthday. We were a bit late due to traffic, but they greeted us with a smile. Our meal was great, and portions generous. But what stood out, was dessert. We avoid ordering desserts at restaurants everywhere due to my son's severe PEANUT ALLERGY. We had cake waiting at home. But upon discovering it was my son's birthday, our server had the pastry chef "upstairs" (I am assuming the Royal York) whip up a special nut-free dessert for my son, without our knowledge, and while we were eating our meal. It was unexpected... and yummy, safe, and beautifully presented. It was much appreciated by all of us!

My wife and I used to live in Japan and we were up for an authentic Japanese experience. The staff (and especially our own personal chef) were outstanding. The food was delicious and we left full and satisfied. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a great night of authentic Japanese dining.

My boyfriend and I had another fabulous night at Benihana celebrating a year since we started dating at the same restaurant we met. We had asked to see Toto, the chef we had the first time and although he was working sushi that night he came over to say hi. Then to our surprise he ended up cooking for us! We were very spoiled by our friends at Benihana, and as usual the food was FANTASTIC. This is really dinner and a show if you choose to try the tepanaki tables. We had such a blast, and Toto, Eiko, and the employees at Benihana have truly made customers for life.

Went here for six year wedding anniversary with my husband and we were treated awful embarrassed by staff about questioning charges that were unexplainable on my bill. I wouldn't recommend to anyone and the food was also flavorless.

For those familiar with the Benihana in the USA, its the same in terms of atmosphere and food, however it is double the price (or triple in regards to the fried rice- $9 a bowl seems pricy for it...not sure why, probably due to its location inside the Royal York. The food was good, and the highlight is the cooking tables. I would go back, but due to its price, only on a special occasion.

I have been to Benihana in the past, and quite enjoyed it .. Not this time .. The food was good, but not spectacular .. I have been to a number of other teppanyaki restaurants (including one here in Kitchener) .. The 'show' is what we came for, and that is what was lacking .. The chef we had was lack-lustre .. It looked like he was going through the motions, but there was no enthusiasm .. He did what he had to do, and left .. Another table had a far more 'active' or 'motivated' chef, and they got the full treatment, which is what we were hoping for .. Our bill came to over $450 for five people, and we left disappointed .. I don't mind spending money for a good meal, but this meal was lacking .. on several levels ..

Benihana's food is still great. Unfortunately the service and the acrobatics of the cooks have really gone down. In that sense, Benihana is no longer special compared to other Japanese restaurants. Taking that into account they are overpriced. Only distinguishing fact is the mustard sauce. That is still the best.

I am from out of town, and have had teppanyaki before but never at Benihana. In Waterloo I get a better show from the chefs and just as good food at a lower price. Also based on what I had, seafood, vegetables, and rice there didn't seem to be anything costly enough to justify the price.

We decided to go to Benihana for our 9th Wedding Anniversary dinner. We were staying the night at the Fairmont Royal York. My husband had never been. I have fond memories of Benihana from when I was young, and my parents taking us as children on a Special Occassion. We LOVED it then! We had a GREAT time on our Anniversary. My Husband LOVED it!!! We will definitely be back. Service and atmosphere was AWESOME. Food was AMAZING too. Thank you

The food was delicious but our waitress seemed confused and didn't pay much attention to us- we waited a very long time for the bill and we were her only table. She was also almost whispering. None of us could hear what she was saying. Now the chef who cooked our meal at the table was great and charismatic. However, when I think of teppanyaki I think of a show. The only thing he did besides cook our food was make a little onion volcano. The food was delicious in the end. I just expected a lot more.

Benihana is my favourite restaurant and I have to been to several all over the world. This was by far the most disappointing experience I have had there... The chef was underwhelming, the food was under seasoned and lack any flavour, the vegetables were under cooked and the chicken was over cooked, and they tried to charge me $51 for 5 prawns... Not happy! The only saving grace was Connie, our server... Lovely!

I LOVE Benihana's! The teppanyaki table is an excellent dining experience - watching the food being cooked at the table and eyeing the chef perform with precision skills (flipping those knives and cutlery!) is entertaining. The food is delicious, the atmosphere is filled with ambiance, and the company of other diners around the table is a pleasure while small-talk abounds. When I come to Toronto, I LOVE dining at Benihana!

The service insofar as the taking of the orders was completely disorganized. The server took some of the table's orders, went off and took care of them and then 20 minutes later came back and took some of the remaining orders... the other guests actually had drinks and appetizers before we even had our dinner orders taken.. the server never actually took our drink order. The chef, while a good cook, was completely non-communicative...

We felt the people working we're rushing us to leave. The salad was berry small and was not good at all but we were not able to choose as it was the only one yet we're offering. It was well over priced for the type of food and service they provided. The way they cooked the food was cool but it only lasted 4 minutes total. We had a table of 13. All and all I will not be back and I would not recomend this restaurant to anybody who likes good service and good food.

We went there for the summerlicious event. $45 prix fixe include an apetizer, a main course and dessert. We ordered some california rolls for apetizer, which were average. And we ordered Hibachi steak, and the chef put on a show for us, which was great and the beef tasted very lean and juicy. And then we had some chocolate cake for dessert, which tasted really good too. I would say that the food and the ambiance were worth the money but it would be a little bit pricy if eating at regular price.

I was a little disappointed with the quality of the food - the soup was just clear broth with some dried onions, the salad had a dressing that was unpalatable. The sir-fried vega were ok- they was no real flavour. The teriyaki chicken was good ; however the two accompanying sauces were a disappointment as well- the ginger sauce /mustard sauce both had a distinct pungent flavour and in my opinion did nothing to enhance the flavour of the food. The biggest surprise of the evening were the desserts- loved the mango mousse and the chocolate cake - they were presented beautifully and I literally ate mine in one gulp- it was so good ! Our dining experience was made memorable by our dinner companions whom we met by pure chance. !

Should ask if first time and do you need help understanding how to order on the menu.... We had to get up from our seat and go find someone to ask. Overall, was good but was just a little pricy for what we received. Would go more often if it was a little less expensive. Maybe understanding the menu more would help get what you want and be affordable.
