There wasn't much on the menu he could eat, due to his religion, however the chef took the time to speak with us about what he could and couldn't eat. They ended up custom making sushi for my friend. I feel like they have minimal parking just so you are forced to pay the valet $5. Which isn't a big deal it's just unnecessary. But other than that the food was exceptional, I ordered the salmon with avo tartar sauce. Our waiter was great, quick and friendly. The cook was not that great though . I think her 4 year old daughter had more fun watching Erick? Eddy?, the chef putting on the show. Our reservation was at the San Diego location April 13th, 2013 @ 12pm. We were seated and served promptly. Staff was friendly and courteous. I have been here millions of times over the past million years... lol I will say that it is due for a make-over. It is the same setting with the same decor and the same experience. I do notice that they have opened up the bar area into an actual seating area, that is a bit crowed on weekends, and awkwardly set so that there is a teeny tiny bar now, with absolutely no standing room, or sitting at the small bar. It could have been thought out better but always fun there, great energetic atmosphere. Wish it were a bit more modernized with the times though. The teppan chef was exceptional preparing a wonderful meal at Our table that was tasty, delicious and fresh. The service was good and the wait staff was courteous. The ambience was fitting for a Japanese restaurant with ample parking with both off-street and on-street available.
If You want an enjoyable dining experience in nice surrounds prepared at Your table with fresh, high quality food and ingredients, then Benehana's is the restaurant to go to.

The quality of the food is always very good and the taste is great. Depending on which chef your table gets, their energy level can vary from slightly monotone to very energetic. I understand they do their "song&dance" all day everyday so it can wear on the chef. The taste of the food makes up for it though. Also, sometime you can get chatty with the strangers next to you and have a great time, other times, everyone keeps to themselves and that's ok too. Drinks are always tasty! The only note I have is that make sure the chef deveins (removes intestinal tract) the shrimp. This happened to our table. No skimping just as if you bought that dinner for full price. The chef was very entertianing. We were 2 and the other party was 6. The chef was hispanic and the party of 6 was also hispanic. They spoke spanish to each other alot which is their language and the chef always explained what he was doing in English but it still made us feel like we were outsiders.
The other little problem was our waiter that took our order was subbing for the waiter on break so there was a continuity problem. The second waiter was no where attentive as the first one.
