I gathered my closest friends for
a birthday dinner on a Friday night. Reservation was a breeze. The food was fantastic and drinks were strong and tasty! I was nostalgic to the times when I use to go over my best friends house for dinner. The taste of the food was fabulous and as close to an authentic Indian meal. Ravi and the rest of the restaurant crew were very attentive, offering recommendations, and altered the spiciness according to my guests liking. It will be my go to Indian restaurant. Can't wait to come back!"

I went to this restaurant & the
service & food was outstanding. Just one caution. The food is served family style so if, like me, you're a single, stick to appetizers."

Hospitality was great and at very
short notice the staff were able to accommodate 5 extra people without an issue given 14 was booked for initially. Food portions were big - I had to take home 1/2 of mine given the appetisers alone were almost enough. Food itself was very tasty and well cooked. Staff were on hand all the time. I never had to call twice to get attention. Very well recommended!"
Dined on 4/4/2014
The service was friendly and
attentive, and helpful. Our waiter actually advised us we were ordering too much food because the portions were generous - unless we planned to take food home. The food was delicious and enjoyable and presented in an attractive fashion. Prices were reasonable. We'll return."

The reviews made me think this was
worth going to as a fan of good Indian food looking for a place to dine en route to a midtown event at 9:45 on a Tuesday evening. The food disappointing at best, the ambience poor, the service" forced to me interested" by our sincere inquiries as to what was good. I rarely write a review but I was embarrassed to have brought my friend, another fan of Indian food, to this restaurant."

I am visiting NY with my husband
who is here for business and the first thing I wanted to do is find ethnic food. Why else would you come to NY? I was craving Indian and googled restaurants from our hotel (Dream Hotel on W. 5th) and Benares popped up. It had great reviews, was a quick two minute walk and we were in heaven. Everyone was so nice and the food speaks for itself. We started with the assorted naan basket which was overflowing with assorted breads. The two dips they give you are amazing. One's spicy and the other is minty. All around us we heard patrons praising the waiters and staff for the meals and ours were just as amazing. Cheese dumplings for me, curry chicken for my husband. Loved everything!"

It is difficult to find
budget-friendly dining options with great food & a great location, but Benares does it all right. Enjoyed the Benares martini & both dishes. The service was excellent and very attentive. We will be back!"

Excellent food, attentive staff
and most accommodating service. Have been twice recently. They are always open to accommodating off the menu requests like Chana saag and bharta (which is outstanding). The grilled shrimp with mango is by far the standout item but everything has been consistently good. Portions are quite large but the leftovers are always delicious. For a midtown reasonably priced excellent meal, Benares can't be beat."

Our party had an enjoyable time
and a very good eating experience at Benares West. I enjoyed the ambiance and our servers took good care of us. The only thing is that the food came with only one level of spiciness which was a little challenging for my companions. But we were directed by our server to the lesser spicy dishes for them. But for me, it was excellent. My daughter ate my takehome portion and she agreed also that it was excellent. She works in Manhattan and she would bring her friends there. I certainly would return."

I took my wife here for a dinner
date and the food was very good. The staff was very friendly and the waiter gave me good information on the main course I was about to choose. He explained that the one I picked is a dry dish and recommended for me another shrimp dish which had a spicy sauce. I took him up on his recommendation and it was excellent. Our scallops appetizer though was a bit overcooked (on the chewy side). The garlic naan was very tasty. The only one thing which I didn't love about the restaurant is the long bench seat the runs along the wall. Couples are seated along here and it makes the experience feel less romantic / personal. Other than that, I did like this restaurant very much and will go back here again."
Dined on 3/22/2014
food was good and would return for
that alone. However the "tequila" martini was made with watered down tequila, a first for me. Being a tequila drinker I am sure it was watered"
Dined on 3/20/2014
The food is delicious, entrees
cooked to order, spicing not dumbed-down for American palates. There is a bang-up take-out business, always a good sigh. Service terrific. Wine list very limited. The California Gruner Veltliner was a pleasant surprise and went very will with the food. We'll return."

Good food in the theater district?
Is that possible? Yes at Benares. My group of three were beyond pleased with the food, service and beautiful room offered to us. Highlights of our meal was the Lamb Roganjosh which was done to perfection with tender meat and spices that did not dominate. Also of note is' the attentive service offered by the entire staff. I will be going back to Benares."

Great environment, courteous
staff, and absolutely delicious food."

Best Indian in our
neighborhood. Imaginative and fresh."

Our experience was so great and so
was the food that we decided to return to this restaurant even though we are here last week. We were craving the butter chicken and lamb chops that we had. The food was just as good. I have to say however that our experience wasn't as magical as the last time because our waiter wasn't the same and he didn't give us the amazing service that the other had. What makes a good outing is the whole package. I would recommend trying this restaurant."
Dined on 3/12/2014
My two friends and I each enjoyed
different dishes and we shared the fruit-and-nut rice, the cucumber raita and the naan. We loved everything , and the rice pudding for dessert, too."
Dined on 3/10/2014
We were three people and shared
two appetizers and three entrees. Everything we tasted was amazingly flavored and well-prepared. Both the chicken and the lamb were tender. You'll recognize the names of dishes from other Indian menus, but you won't recognized the flavors. You'll go: I didn't know that dish could taste so good! We even had well-made martinis. The room looks good and has extremely comfortable seating. We went to talk and the noise level was low so we could actually hear each other (although it was on a frigid Mon. night). The service was nice and unhurried. All in all, I can't wait to go back and taste something else."
Dined on 3/3/2014
Not only was the good really good
the service was outstanding! The server made our children (15 year old) feel very special as well offering them a complimentary drink. We will definitely go back!"
Dined on 3/1/2014
Benares has never let me down! The
good is always excellent and the comfortable & caring service kicks it up a notch! The Amritsari fish & Saag Paneer are my favorites here!"

Needed a casual yet delicious
midtown west option for dinner with friends and stumbled into Benares having read the pretty much unanimous great reviews and hearing that their downtown branch is fabulous. It did not disappoint. The staff was incredibly accommodating - made us favorite dishes, not necessarily on the menu, and guiding this gluten-free diner to safety. Excellent food, amazing staff and a generally upbeat atmosphere. HIghly recommend, particularly the tandoori shrimp with mango and the chicken tikka masala."
Dined on 2/25/2014
We've been chasing the dragon
trying to find creamy chicken tikka masala sauce...this came close. Warm naan, crab appetizer is a MUST! Unfortunately, I want REALLY spicy...as in SPICY for indian food spicy....they couldn't deliver. Veggie Vindaloo-not spicy enough, even though I ate a bowl of green chilis, and a bowl of vindaloo sauce with the appetizers. The food was good-fresh-fast, now our new fave indian in the hood. They kept switching waiters on us...wierd."
Dined on 2/23/2014
I went in with moderate
expectations, but the food and service were both superb. I asked for recommendations from the waiter, and he was spot on about the sumptuous crab curry. Portions are very generous."
Dined on 2/14/2014
My girlfriend and I came here for
Valentine's Day and we were very impressed with the menu - both the quality of the food and the value. We ordered chicken tikka masala, saag paneer, some rice and naan, and a few glasses of wine. All of this after tip was ~$75. The service was fine - their waiting staff seems to work as a team, with a few different employees checking on us throughout the meal. Only negative comment pertains to space, which is a common issue in NYC. We were right on top of the two couples on either side of our table. A bit cumbersome to get up and sit back down. Not a huge issue in my opinion as the food/service were great. Definitely recommended for a small group of no more than 5 or 6. Great for couples."
Dined on 2/14/2014
We were - and I had the best Saag
Paneer ever, my favorite vegetarian Indian dish for years. Spiced perfectly, smooth, good cheese, and nice rice. Plentiful too; I took the rest along and had it again the next evening! My wife had the chicken korma and while very good, she's used to seeing more fruit & nuts in it. That said, we both thought the naranga kheer dessert was very tasty, and the staff was super-nice, welcoming the guests from the windy and snow-blown into this pleasant restaurant."

I hit their great lunch buffet
monthly. Nuff said."
Dined on 2/12/2014
My coworkers and I enjoyed a very
nice buffet for a great price. It was 5 of us and we were seated right away. A very nice gentleman was nearby and was kind and patient enough to explain the food choices to us as Indian cuisine is very new to me. I later found out that he was the manager of the restaurant. The food was very flavorful and delicious. My colleagues and I enjoyed it so much we had them cater an office luncheon the following week. The food was delivered on time and set up promptly and Nick, the manager called me to make sure everything went well. I highly recommend this place for those who want to try some good Indian food."

Wonderful , delicious food.
Attentive service. We had a wonderful time and can't wait to return."
Dined on 2/8/2014
Food was OK - but plates were ice
cold and the food was not really hot. Service was awful. Had to ask for silverware and water and everything came in their time and the place was not full. Appetizers better than mains."
Dined on 2/7/2014
Finding restaurants in the Theater
District where the food that is served is not all prepared offsite and just warmed up and served as "made in house" is nearly impossible these days. We found that many of the dishes we were served here were most probably made on site and if not, they sure tasted like it, which amounts to something that is the same thing or near enough. We actually wanted to try more dishes but the server warned us it would be too much food and he was right. Very honest and attentive service , though I admit , due to the game the restaurant was slow. I don't say this easily or often but we can't wait to go back and try the dishes we were too full to experience the first time. Looking forward to it."
Dined on 2/2/2014
Benares is a small Indian
restaurant that did not disappoint. The wonderful service started immediately as we walked in the front doors. The manager (possibly owner) and hosts greeting us to take our jackets and make us comfortable. All the recommendations from the menu were amazing and a complimentary dessert item was even included! Tremendous hospitality - we will definitely be visiting again :)"

This is my favorite go-to spot for
Indian dinner because it is close by, has great food and also consistently delivers fast. Chicken tikka, yellow dal, chicken biryani, chicken shahi korma and their mango lassi have been my favorites of late. It tends to get crowded in the evenings, especially on weekends, and at such times I find the neighboring tables to be close enough to prevent private conversation (their music is quiet). Not kid- or date-friendly. The service isn't the most attentive, but it's very easy to get hold of them and they are good with suggestions when you need them. Overall, a great place in midtown to dine in or order from!"
Dined on 1/29/2014
I would definitely go back. Some
of the best Indian food we have ever eaten. The lamb was cooked perfectly. Staff very attentive and friendly. We loved it."
Dined on 1/26/2014
Took a chance on this restaurant
because of its location, and wanted great Indian cuisine for my guest. Experience was great; food was very delicious and well-presented; place had a nice cozy environment. Space is well designed and has very nice decor--loved the golden-fabric chairs."
Dined on 1/20/2014
We went for a dinner on a Friday
evening - it wasn't crowded. The food was mediocre, and the service was bad. The waiter chatted with people at another table and took a long to to bring the food we ordered. We then asked for 1 meal to be wrapped up for home - another waiter came by (because ours was never around), and he said sure - but he never brought us our wrapped up food! Also our waiter took a very long time to bring our check even after asking for it. On top of all this, they put in an 18% gruitity on the bill - no option to pay whatever you may want. That's probably a reason for the bad service. There is another Indian place called Saphire in Columbus Circle with much better service and food. We will not be returning."

Restaurant” We have dined at this restaurant by ourselves, with friends and with our kids from NYC and it is consistently excellent and enjoyed by everyone of all ages. From the street it doesn't look like much but once inside the atmosphere is contemporary, sophisticated and comfortable, the menu items are creative and appropriately priced, the service is always attentive and friendly, seating is always prompt and they encourage BYOB for a small corkage fee of $10. Appetizer, entree and dessert items we have ordered has been nicely presented, portions are ample and delicious! This is now our favorite, "Go To," restaurant"
Dined on 1/13/2014
Terrific and really convenient
location. Super value - under $50 for two. Kozhi Varutha curry is a standout. Gobji Jaipuri was delish. Mixed pakora is just OK. Excellent, non-pushy service. Would definitely come back."
Dined on 1/10/2014
Food and drinks were tasty as
expected. Less than 1/2 the tables were taken, but somehow it took over 15 mins to get 2 drinks, and about 1/2 hour to get main courses. prices were high for what you get. had to buy the rice for the main courses."
Dined on 1/9/2014
We had Palak Paneer and Paneer
Tikka. The palak paneer was exquisite. I really mean it when I say 'exquisite'. I have never tasted palak paneer outside in a restaurant. I myself make it at home, and everyone says it is very good; this palak paneer was really something."
Dined on 1/10/2014
Took my girlfriend to dinner in
her first visit to New York City. The servers were great and extremely helpful and kind. My girlfriend loves Indian food and she says this was the best she's had. So we ordered a bunch to go. Overall a great experience. I would recommend it definitely."
