We were three people and shared
two appetizers and three entrees. Everything we tasted was amazingly flavored and well-prepared. Both the chicken and the lamb were tender. You'll recognize the names of dishes from other Indian menus, but you won't recognized the flavors. You'll go: I didn't know that dish could taste so good! We even had well-made martinis. The room looks good and has extremely comfortable seating. We went to talk and the noise level was low so we could actually hear each other (although it was on a frigid Mon. night). The service was nice and unhurried. All in all, I can't wait to go back and taste something else."

Not only was the good really good
the service was outstanding! The server made our children (15 year old) feel very special as well offering them a complimentary drink. We will definitely go back!"

Benares has never let me down! The
good is always excellent and the comfortable & caring service kicks it up a notch! The Amritsari fish & Saag Paneer are my favorites here!"

Needed a casual yet delicious
midtown west option for dinner with friends and stumbled into Benares having read the pretty much unanimous great reviews and hearing that their downtown branch is fabulous. It did not disappoint. The staff was incredibly accommodating - made us favorite dishes, not necessarily on the menu, and guiding this gluten-free diner to safety. Excellent food, amazing staff and a generally upbeat atmosphere. HIghly recommend, particularly the tandoori shrimp with mango and the chicken tikka masala."

We've been chasing the dragon
trying to find creamy chicken tikka masala sauce...this came close. Warm naan, crab appetizer is a MUST! Unfortunately, I want REALLY spicy...as in SPICY for indian food spicy....they couldn't deliver. Veggie Vindaloo-not spicy enough, even though I ate a bowl of green chilis, and a bowl of vindaloo sauce with the appetizers. The food was good-fresh-fast, now our new fave indian in the hood. They kept switching waiters on us...wierd."
Dined on 2/23/2014
I went in with moderate
expectations, but the food and service were both superb. I asked for recommendations from the waiter, and he was spot on about the sumptuous crab curry. Portions are very generous."

My girlfriend and I came here for
Valentine's Day and we were very impressed with the menu - both the quality of the food and the value. We ordered chicken tikka masala, saag paneer, some rice and naan, and a few glasses of wine. All of this after tip was ~$75. The service was fine - their waiting staff seems to work as a team, with a few different employees checking on us throughout the meal. Only negative comment pertains to space, which is a common issue in NYC. We were right on top of the two couples on either side of our table. A bit cumbersome to get up and sit back down. Not a huge issue in my opinion as the food/service were great. Definitely recommended for a small group of no more than 5 or 6. Great for couples."
Dined on 2/14/2014
We were - and I had the best Saag
Paneer ever, my favorite vegetarian Indian dish for years. Spiced perfectly, smooth, good cheese, and nice rice. Plentiful too; I took the rest along and had it again the next evening! My wife had the chicken korma and while very good, she's used to seeing more fruit & nuts in it. That said, we both thought the naranga kheer dessert was very tasty, and the staff was super-nice, welcoming the guests from the windy and snow-blown into this pleasant restaurant."

I hit their great lunch buffet
monthly. Nuff said."

My coworkers and I enjoyed a very
nice buffet for a great price. It was 5 of us and we were seated right away. A very nice gentleman was nearby and was kind and patient enough to explain the food choices to us as Indian cuisine is very new to me. I later found out that he was the manager of the restaurant. The food was very flavorful and delicious. My colleagues and I enjoyed it so much we had them cater an office luncheon the following week. The food was delivered on time and set up promptly and Nick, the manager called me to make sure everything went well. I highly recommend this place for those who want to try some good Indian food."

Wonderful , delicious food.
Attentive service. We had a wonderful time and can't wait to return."
Dined on 2/8/2014
Food was OK - but plates were ice
cold and the food was not really hot. Service was awful. Had to ask for silverware and water and everything came in their time and the place was not full. Appetizers better than mains."

Finding restaurants in the Theater
District where the food that is served is not all prepared offsite and just warmed up and served as "made in house" is nearly impossible these days. We found that many of the dishes we were served here were most probably made on site and if not, they sure tasted like it, which amounts to something that is the same thing or near enough. We actually wanted to try more dishes but the server warned us it would be too much food and he was right. Very honest and attentive service , though I admit , due to the game the restaurant was slow. I don't say this easily or often but we can't wait to go back and try the dishes we were too full to experience the first time. Looking forward to it."

Benares is a small Indian
restaurant that did not disappoint. The wonderful service started immediately as we walked in the front doors. The manager (possibly owner) and hosts greeting us to take our jackets and make us comfortable. All the recommendations from the menu were amazing and a complimentary dessert item was even included! Tremendous hospitality - we will definitely be visiting again :)"

This is my favorite go-to spot for
Indian dinner because it is close by, has great food and also consistently delivers fast. Chicken tikka, yellow dal, chicken biryani, chicken shahi korma and their mango lassi have been my favorites of late. It tends to get crowded in the evenings, especially on weekends, and at such times I find the neighboring tables to be close enough to prevent private conversation (their music is quiet). Not kid- or date-friendly. The service isn't the most attentive, but it's very easy to get hold of them and they are good with suggestions when you need them. Overall, a great place in midtown to dine in or order from!"
Dined on 1/29/2014
I would definitely go back. Some
of the best Indian food we have ever eaten. The lamb was cooked perfectly. Staff very attentive and friendly. We loved it."

Took a chance on this restaurant
because of its location, and wanted great Indian cuisine for my guest. Experience was great; food was very delicious and well-presented; place had a nice cozy environment. Space is well designed and has very nice decor--loved the golden-fabric chairs."
Dined on 1/20/2014
We went for a dinner on a Friday
evening - it wasn't crowded. The food was mediocre, and the service was bad. The waiter chatted with people at another table and took a long to to bring the food we ordered. We then asked for 1 meal to be wrapped up for home - another waiter came by (because ours was never around), and he said sure - but he never brought us our wrapped up food! Also our waiter took a very long time to bring our check even after asking for it. On top of all this, they put in an 18% gruitity on the bill - no option to pay whatever you may want. That's probably a reason for the bad service. There is another Indian place called Saphire in Columbus Circle with much better service and food. We will not be returning."

Restaurant” We have dined at this restaurant by ourselves, with friends and with our kids from NYC and it is consistently excellent and enjoyed by everyone of all ages. From the street it doesn't look like much but once inside the atmosphere is contemporary, sophisticated and comfortable, the menu items are creative and appropriately priced, the service is always attentive and friendly, seating is always prompt and they encourage BYOB for a small corkage fee of $10. Appetizer, entree and dessert items we have ordered has been nicely presented, portions are ample and delicious! This is now our favorite, "Go To," restaurant"

Terrific and really convenient
location. Super value - under $50 for two. Kozhi Varutha curry is a standout. Gobji Jaipuri was delish. Mixed pakora is just OK. Excellent, non-pushy service. Would definitely come back."
Dined on 1/10/2014
Food and drinks were tasty as
expected. Less than 1/2 the tables were taken, but somehow it took over 15 mins to get 2 drinks, and about 1/2 hour to get main courses. prices were high for what you get. had to buy the rice for the main courses."
Dined on 1/9/2014
We had Palak Paneer and Paneer
Tikka. The palak paneer was exquisite. I really mean it when I say 'exquisite'. I have never tasted palak paneer outside in a restaurant. I myself make it at home, and everyone says it is very good; this palak paneer was really something."

Took my girlfriend to dinner in
her first visit to New York City. The servers were great and extremely helpful and kind. My girlfriend loves Indian food and she says this was the best she's had. So we ordered a bunch to go. Overall a great experience. I would recommend it definitely."
Dined on 1/10/2014
Great food. Very dim light. Hard
to see vibrant food colors. Server was confused by request to have several appetizers as main course. Large portion size. Order less or take home leftovers for second feast. Nice staff. Would go again."
Dined on 1/4/2014
Solid Indian food with servers who
were friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. The food was nicely portioned and was delicious. I think I will come back for lunch next time. Comfortable with beautiful colors and an attentive staff, the chef took exciting liberties with spices that we had not experienced with your average Indian fare. Lovely presentation as well. Highly recommended."
Dined on 12/30/2013
With the exception of the crab
appetizr, the food we ordered was mediocre. Both meat dishes we ordered (chicken and lamb) were overcooked, with the meat tough and stringy. The saag paneer was average. The service our waiter provided was abysmal. After delivering all the dishes, he disappeared for the next half hour. While other diners had their glasses refilled, etc, we tried to make eye contact with any waiter in the area for help. It wasnt happening. I finally complained, which resulted in a token half hearted apology, but nothing else. There's no way we will ever eat here again when so many great Indian restaurants exist in NYC."

The food was delicious and the
service outstanding. If you are looking for great indian food, I highly recommend this restsurant."
Dined on 12/27/2013
We're from the sticks (OK, upstate
New York) and have never been comfortable in noisy NYC restaurants. Especially when we're meeting old friends and want to talk, which was the case with our visit to Benares. The food was excellent, the service was very attentive, and they also did a great job with the large Indian family that was sitting near us, complete with several children. I wouldn't hesitate to go back."

If you love Indian food, this is
the perfect place for you!"

Terrific spot pre or post theater.
So happy I found it! Will definitely return."

While the business objective over
Dinner was well achieved, the Food was too bland ("American") for us ethnically Indian people. I selected this restaurant to entertain a business colleague travelling from India. I am not sure if he appreciated the food as much."
Dined on 12/17/2013
I come back here every time I want
Indian food in NY"
Dined on 12/5/2013
I have eaten here at least a
handful to times and on every occasion I have walked away greatly impressed with the quality of the food. It is fresh, perfectly cooked and tasty. I recently took a work colleague here - he is from India and a cook himself. He commented on how you could distinguish each curry and that you could tell the food was individually prepared to order. The wait staff is high caliber and very professional. Finally, I am vegan and have found Benares to have many options for me. I highly recommend it here."
Dined on 11/20/2013
Though the menu was limited and
not nearly as expansive as many other Indian restaurants in which I have dined, the food was very good. They have some unconventional items, like duck, and some interesting fish dishes, but many standard dishes were absent. The naan was perfect, and the two lamb dishes we ordered, lamb vindaloo, and a lamb shank, were excellent. The lamb tasted fresh and wasn't tough, sinewy or gamy. We reserved seats for after a show, at 10:00, and it clearly was too late. I knew it was their last seating, but expected many patrons to be finishing up from earlier seatings. They gave the appearance of being poised to close, so we were a bit rushed, but it didn't diminish the quality of the food at all."
Dined on 11/17/2013
This restaurant is a gem, tucked
away off Broadway in the '50s, and easy walk to the theatre. We love the freshly prepared Indian food and the ambiance. The Classic Samosa and Bhel Puri are among the best I've ever tasted. My favorite is Saag Paneer, perfectly prepared! And a plus! We are an omnivore, and a vegan, and because the cooking of Benares is noted for its vegetarian fare, we always find just what we like on the menu -- no fuss about specially prepared dishes."
Dined on 11/8/2013
Benares turns out some remarkable
vegetable dishes. Excellent variety with agressive spicing. Watch out for the whole spices which show that this kitchen really knows how to do it."
Dined on 11/5/2013
Just as the reviews on "Open
Table" stated, this was an excellent choice, very glad we went with Benares. Great selection of meat-free entrees for one in our party."

Good choice near City Center
Theater. What the restaurant lacks in atmosphere it makes up in good food. However drinks, specifically wine overpriced"

Robbie the sever was very kind.
The owner greeted our table. I highly recommend to diners who want great Indian food."
