Diner Reviews
  • "Overall the experience was OK. The food was OK. The ambiance was OK, and actually very noisy. The prices were high with small portions. The flavors aren't what you would come to expect from an Asian Fusion restaurant, needed more of a punch. Our service was good. I personally wouldn't return."

  • "Attentive service- didn't realize that there were two types of service menu within the same restaurant and the hostess made no effort to share - it was only when we left an inquired were we told - food was nice but didn't wow us"

  • "A friend and I dined at BellyQ sharing a variety of dishes (thereby creating our own version of a tasting menu). Every dish was wonderful - from the duck to the roast beef to the fried chicken to the variety of salads, each dish and bite had a unique and flavor filled note to it! Our approach necessitated taking our left overs which made for enjoyable snacking the next day. Yummy!!!"

  • "Food was just not good. Tried 4 items all recommended by server and was disappointed. Stick to your fast food concept. Much better."

  • "Chef Bill Kim can do no wrong and BellyQ, his third Chicago restaurant, proves it. A must-visit for locals and out-of-towners!"

  • "Upbeat, energetic restaurant specializing in Asian inspired BBQ. Some tables with individual grills, but skip the Waygu beef - fatty. Great salmon, interesting sides and slaws. Service was terrific."

  • "The food was very good. Lots of strong flavors. We enjoyed the goat feta cheese pancake and kale and papaya salad. The ribs were good not great. All of the sauces were robust. Most of them sweet and spicy at the same time. Maybe we should have done the prix fixe meal so that we could do our own cooking on our table hibachi."

  • "The restaurant is cool with a lot of funk. The food was very good and menu was short but great. I recommend the pb&j dessert!"

  • "Third visit to BellyQ and I am more impressed each time. Service is attentive and casual. Food is top notch and unique. The Red Blossm cocktail might be my favorite in the city. And my favorite part their soft serve ice cream!"

  • "So excited to try BellyQ. Arrived and was seated right away. Once we were seated and our waiter brought us our waters, it was 20 minutes until he returned to take our order. The restaurant was pretty empty. Our waiter Brett was more interested talking to his coworkers than attending to us. We constantly needed to ask the other waiter for thing. Too bad the service made us think twice about going back for dinner another time."

  • "I found this spot through some extensive research before a weekend trip to Chicago, and could not be happier with the experience. The space itself is huge and well-designed. The menu is interesting and diverse, from apps to drinks. Among other things, we ordered the lamb buns and short loin, and they were honestly some of the best foods I've ever tasted. The vinegar were unexpected and different, and our waitress was super knowledgeable and personable. I cannot say a single bad thing about BellyQ other than I can't go to it unless I'm back in town. It was truly an amazing meal that will not be forgotten any time soon. Side perk: KARAOKE IN THE RESTAURANT. What?!"

  • "I have heard many great things about this place, so I decided to try it... Being vegetarian, I expect my menu options to be limited at a meat-heavy restaurant like this one, but my options were even more limited than I expected!! My friend and I basically shared two small plate salads, which were good but not memorable, and then one vegetarian entree, which was basically a fancy pancake with more SALAD on top. We also got the vegetarian rolls, which were essentially plain bread. When I told the server I was vegetarian, he kind of gave me a look like, "oh wow, that's gonna be tough here..." I was surprised to have this kind of experience in Chicago. I would have tried the vegetarian soup if it were not 80 degrees outside."

  • "If you do not have the fried tofu your life will be less fulfilled. We shared some starters including the fried tofu and the rib ends. Rib ends=meat candy. We also ordered several sides and one main dish. We did not order too much food, we did not have enough people. Everything was terrific including the staff and the drinks. This was our first trip to Chicago. We will be back."

  • "Small portions and overpriced. Also noisy and hard to hear."

  • "The concept behind Belly Q is exciting however the execution on that concept leaves much to be desired. If you're a fortified foodie, this place will fall well below the expectation set. If you just like to eat different things, then you may be excited, but not if you've actually tasted contemporary Asian fusion meals or had actual Korean BBQ. The thing that was surprisingly good was the sticky rice, which is a take on Korean jambalaya & fried rice. We had the grill feast, which consists of really great cuts of meat that serve as the only gem of the dining experience, except that the contemporary fusion is reliant on your use of your own seasoning of the meat with seasonings that are to put it simple, ok."

  • "We had a terrific dinner at BellyQ Saturday night. We had reservations for 8:30, got there early and were seated just about the time of our reservation. We had a wonderful server named Selina. She took very good care of our party which consisted of myself, my wife and our 2 teenage sons. She fully explained the menu, answered our questions and coursed our meal for us. Lots to share, plenty to go around. It was a wonderful way to end our week long visit to Chicago, we will definitely be back!"

  • "This place is fantastic! So many different flavors and such a great time! I would recommend this place to anyone."

  • "Innovative menu with unexpected but awesome combinations of flavor. Both the presentation and taste of food was excellent. The most memorable dish was the special watermelon and tomato salad with pesto, Parmesan. Cilantro and lime - fresh and delicious. Our waiter was extremely knowledgeable friendly and helpful, making it a very memorable evening."

  • "Imaginative, creative, well-prepared food. On paper some of the combinations sound strange but they work, with a good blend of flavors that complement each other. My nephew is in the restaurant business in Chicago and he recommended Belly Q when I was visiting; I definitely would return on my next trip to Chicago."

  • "I almost didnt book a table because of a lot of negative reviews regarding service. I am delighted that I took a chance. Our waiter Zane was just great, with excellent recommendations and attention to us. Everything we had was fantastic...the potatoes even merit a special mention..from an Irish person...lamb satay was delicious. Wine delectable. Make sure to leave room for dessert...donuts with house made soft serve...PB+J sundae?!!! I cant wait to go back!"

  • "The food was boring, all of the same flavor profile and overwhelmingly disappointing."

  • "My wife and I went to BellyQ for her birthday. We sat at a grill table and did the $60 prix fixe menu. I was a little nervous about grilling the food ourselves but our server was terrific about letting us know how to prepare everything. The food was outstanding; the only reason I didn't give it all 5 stars is because the service was a little slow."

  • "I loved the food at BellyQ. It was tasty, inventive, and high quality. The presentation was excellent and the food came out quickly. The service was OK but something seemed off - example: our food started coming before our wine arrived. The restaurant is extremely noisy which affected our experience. They definitely need to invest in some noise reduction panels hung in the ceiling. I loved every dish we had: Korean short ribs, BBQ baby backs, bacon pancake and the Thai fried chicken. They were wonderful."

  • "Sticky lamb buns and smoked bacon pancake appetizers were pretty good - I would have them again. Entrees were very average. Wagyu beef shortribs were tough and not very juicy. Duck breast was tough and hard to cut or chew. Mushroom posole (soup) tasted overwhelmingly of lemongrass, and contained fewer ingredients than we had expected. Lemongrass salmon was average. Warm doughnuts were an okay dessert, but not great. Service was good. Parents found it noisy but I thought it was normal for Friday dinner service. Overall, we did not think food was worth the price. Would not go back again."

  • "The food here is outstanding. I brought out of town guests and they totally loved it. The Salmon, the Duck, the Rack of ribs... all fantastic. Great appetizers as well."
    Dined on 6/10/2014
  • "It was good, but did not live up to all the hype that I'd heard. I liked the food options; however the rib tips were had too much fat, not enough eatable meat. The drinks were fantastice (I had the Passionrita). The entrees portions were good, especially if you wanted to share."

  • "I have been here 2x and this was the 1st time my workmates joined. They were in awe of the flavors, each dish is better than the next. We had the fried tofu, edamame, kimchi and Hamachi to start. I had the steak w/ kimchi potato salad for my entree...I will be craving this for a long time! The flavors were beautiful and the presentation was amazing. I love the Red Lotus drink...very unique. I will be sure to come here again when I am in Chicago!"

  • "Food and service were both outstanding. Don't miss out on the Thai fried chicken appetizer. Delicious cocktails too. Also very cool that Urban Belly is attached for takeout."

  • "Food is really terrific, though the sweet potatoes were greasy on this visit. Love, love the atmosphere and decor! We did the Korean BBQ grill 5-course meal to celebrate my son's bday. It was pricey, but I really appreciate BellyQ's mission for sustainable food and supporting local farms, so the price was worth it."

  • "The food was good, and the menu had a few unique items. However, the menu and the overall experience can't beat Belly shack or Urban Belly, which are both just (or more!) flavorful for half the price. Our service was absolutely terrible. Our waiter was unhelpful with questions about the menu, was dismissive, and once we places our order, we never saw him again, not even to bring us our check. The staff at the host stand and the runners, bussers, etc. all did an excellent job."
    Dined on 6/7/2014
  • "We skipped the apps and ordered entrees and sides. Duck breast, pork spare ribs, sticky rice, grilled Chinese broccoli. We enjoyed the all vibrant flavors. Try the donuts for desert."
    Dined on 6/6/2014
  • "I expected a better quality of food and preparation than we received. Particularly poor was the hot pot I ordered which was loaded with gummy rice cakes, but had little tofu or other interesting items in the greasy broth."
    Dined on 6/4/2014
  • "My husband and I have been exploring Korean BBQ options after moving to Chicago. The wagyu beef and pork ribs were a total bit, and so were the lamb buns. I wish he had room leftover for the soft serve dessert or donuts, but will have to do those next time. Attentive, knowledgable service. Want to try the BBQ tables next!"

  • "The menu featured a variety of interesting and tasty asian dishes. Many ingredients were uncommon but exciting to try. "

  • "the rib tips had a crispy skin to them which is quite different although created a 'chewiness.' The fish and udon was pretty good. It was a special that night. One of the main courses for our party, the chicken was not delivered as requested and then the return plate wasn't cleared of the items that shouldn't have been there. Two dishes of lamb came with cold beans and had to be sent back. The server andd manager were good about getting the items fixed. overall for us not a great experience but they did their best to compensate and said there was a cook training."

  • "The food gets better and better every time we go to bellyq. Love this place!!"
    Dined on 5/18/2014
  • "between my 8-10 visits to bellyQ, I've tried literally every item on the menu(s) and I have to say that the best dishes have been taken off the menu, most notable: bellyQ beef and the cold eggplant side, and replaced with dishes far below their standard, and the usually amazing fried tofu was just drab this time around. the only newish menu item that really satisfied taste buds is the sticky lamb buns (even without the strange mint jelly). while the service and ambience continue to be stellar and drinks nice and stiff, the food is starting to lose the balance and depth it once had. "

  • "Overall, great food as always... beware though...walk-ins are 2nd class citizens; put behind all reservations. We were told 1 hour, and had to wait for 2.5 hours."

  • "Highly recommend this restaurant, especially for foodies. Great cocktails and the food is outstanding. Don't miss the Pork Ribs, Edamame and Duck. Also they sell their four sauces to take home-the Belly Fire was our favorite!"
