Diner Reviews
  • "My favorite go-to place for entertaining friends when they come to town - large portions to share and easier on the budget as a result. Finally had the grilled gorgonzola salad and it did not disappoint! I would highly recommend this as an appetizer."

  • "Worst service I have ever had! Sadly, food was tasty but hard to enjoy when service was so awful. Tables too close together so had to hear our neighbors the entire time, service from waitress was almost nonexistent, took hour+ to get apps and when we complained to manager was confronted with obnoxious, condescending attitude - basically saying that "everyone had to wait tonight, you should have noticed it was a busy night." On positive side, after an email, owner was gracious & apologetic. However, I wont recommend C'ville location to anyone any time soon. Good food can only gets you so far in restaurant biz, offensive service will sink you and, if C'ville location doesn't change some staffing, I'm afraid that will be their fate."

  • "Amazing dining experience from start to finish... Dinner began with the caprese salad, followed by maincourse pasta Al Forna and lastly finishing up with a liimoncello poundcake. Looking forward to my next visit"

  • "Our whole table was pleased with Bella's and even ordering conservatively, we had plenty of leftovers to take home. Food was excellent and service was terrific."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our meal, were pleased with our service and liked the ambience. Despite the generous portions, we devoured almost everything we ordered. No doubt we were hungry, but the food was excellent. Our only complaint was that the noise level was quite high, making it difficult to hear conversation. Then again we were a big group ourselves and probably contributed to the noise level. We will be back!"

  • "Nearly everything about house salad and dinner special of pan-seared chicken over penne, sun-dried tomatoes, and mushrooms in cheese sauce was perfect. The server was outstanding. We tipped 25%."

  • "We've eaten at Bella's twice and love to take our guests from out of town. They are always impressed with the fabulous food and fun dining experience. Most people are in groups; large or small and everyone is having a good time. We always eat too much because the food is amazing traditional Italian cooking and the wine is wonderful."

  • "The food is mostly excellent, the service friendly, and the atmosphere pleasing except for the incredible noise level we encountered at our past visit."

  • "I took my father here for fathers day and was so disappointed. There was one server for the full restaurant who was running around like crazy, but under-serving everyone. The hostess helped here and there, but we rarely had our glasses refilled, no one checked to see if we needed anything after we got the meal, and it took ages for our table to be cleared. It's too pricey for the lack of service."

  • "Bella's never disappoints! It was the first restaurant that my husband and I ever ate together at in Charlottesville before we moved here over a year ago. We continue to go back because the service is impeccable, the ambiance is supreme and the food is the best Italian you can get in Central Virginia. Remember to share your entrees and always come especially hungry. The sausage and peppers is the best dish on the menu and you have to try the grilled salad with Gorgonzola, Pancetta and balsamic. It's always great to know this place is right around the corner when you're craving amazing Italian in a great atmosphere."

  • "Pleasently surpised by the "family style" menu. A good value. The food was excellent!"

  • "I didn't know what to order when most of the appetizers, pastas, and entrees were labeled "serve 2" and "serve 4" since I was. I wanted the minestrone soup but also wanted something a little more substantial. The waiter Michael was very helpful and suggested me to consider the "contourni" which was probably a better size for one person. I ordered the broccoli rabe and loved it. The minestrone soup was delicious as well. I will go back again to try other contourni items. "

  • "I have been to Bella's many, many, many times. The food on this occasion was, as always, yummy (grilled gorgonzola, veal marsala and tiramisu), but service was not as attentive as it has been. Neither the owner nor the manager was present, so perhaps the staff was not on peak, but water did not get refilled, needed silverware had to be requested, no milk served with coffee...the little things that make a difference. I'll go back, and I hope that service will return to its former level."

  • "Bella is the best dining experience that my wife and I have had in the Charlottesville area. The staff were very attentive and helpful, and the food was incredible. The atmosphere is nice, but subdued, decor is not particularly fancy, but it is clear that the focus is the food. Bella is not cheap, but whatever you pay will seem worth the money."

  • "Bella's is a must visit restaurant on Historic West Main between the University of Virginia and the Downtown mall. From the moment you step inside Bella's front door you will be treated with great service and food. Delicious and fairly priced. The staff is excellent, attentive and has great knowledge of the food and wines Bella's is serving. Great for a romantic meal for two or a feast for your entire family. The old building that houses Bella's adds to the great experience....great décor...old black and white photos of Bella's family...white table linens....wait staff in black. Class act. "

  • "We went early with my parents and 3 young kids. We booked on Open Table and the table was all ready for us when we arrived. The wait staff was very nice and accommodating. The food was very good although even the "small" entrees--meant for 1-2 people--and salads were very big so we definitely could've ordered less. We had chicken Parmesan and sausage and peppers both of which were quite good but needed a bit of salt (easily remedied.) The menu is completely family style so the only issue might be if you had a small party and couldn't agree on what to order. We would definitely go again. "

  • "Easily one of the best Italian restaurants in Charlotteville. Large portion sizes, served family style. Tables are close together and therefore can be a little too loud at times. "

  • "If you are seated in the front of the restaurant the air conditioning is so powerful it cools off your food, So ask for plates to cover what you are waiting to consume."

  • "I've been there 3 times and each time the service was poor and the noise level too loud to talk to people at your own table."

  • "We always dine a Bella's when in town Great good very large portions sharing is a must. Owner always there with friendly conversation. Delicious food "

  • "I took my 4th-year son there for dinner because we heard that it was very good. Didn't know that it's "family style" only; the prices are for two or for four. But it's priced reasonably and we had no trouble on deciding on something we both wanted to eat. What a concept! It was fun and different. We had the grilled romaine gorgonzola salad and it was SO amazing and different than anything either of us had ever had. Then we had the aioli pasta with shrimp. Terrific! We got to meet the owner and he is an amazing guy, so open and friendly and funny! I drove all the way up from Williamsburg just to take my son out for a belated birthday dinner and I was not sorry at all for the effort. What a night! Just loved it."

  • "I had someone highly recommend Bella's so was thrilled when my husband took me there for my birthday. It was fabulous! We had a wonderful waiter who gave us good recommendations on selection of our meals. The garlic bread was to die for and their pasta was excellent. We paired it with a lovely chianti and shared a tiramisu for dessert. I highly recommend Bella's. I t is a must try."

  • "The food was plentiful and amazing, the waitstaff were attentive, but not noticeable, the atmosphere reminded me of a New York city mom and pop elegant gem, and my favorite was the price. VERY AFFORDABLE!!!"

  • "A couple friends and I had a good time at Bella's last Friday. It was our first visit and we will go back. The food was very good, though the lasagna much more traditional (old-world-Italy) than I expected. That's not a bad comment, it was just different! The mixed fish over noodles was excellent (can't recall the Italian words). Pay attention when they tell you "serves two." We had three good appetites for two plates and had leftovers. The wine selection is good and the desert menu very good. "

  • "Food was really good for the most part. The calamari was cooked right so that is a plus. However, the red sauce in general was meh. The lamb lasagna was amazingly good though. Our server was ok.. He was nice and knowledgable about everything and really sold us on the special of the day. He called me boss on the way out though, that rubbed me the wrong way. Other than that petty complaint, we had a great evening and will go back again for sure."

  • "Unusual in that the entrees are either for two or four people. We had delicious eggplant & lasgana. The Gorgonzola salad was a perfect starter. The waiter was very knowledge. We were in Charlottesville at a quiet time during final exams. But there were some UVA students out & about. This is a great place which gets very busy at graduation time & when the school year is in full motion!"

  • "Nice bar ,very clean, enjoyed our dinner but did not like that everything on the menu was for tow or four and that on weekends you only get dinner at lunch time they do into offer a lunch menu on the weekends "

  • "Waiter overzealous and in your face. Pasta with clams/shrimp for 2 had 6 clams, about 4 shrimp and not enough really for 2 people."
    Dined on 4/26/2014
  • "The food is good and the portions are large. Four adults shared 2 small, very fresh, salads and two small entrees. Rigatoni was very tasty but the veal, especially with the upcharge, was tough. Even though it was very loud, we had a fun evening. Our waitress was attentive but it bordered on the "hurry up and order/finish, I want to turn this table" feeling. The food was good enough to try again."

The food is so good, my girlfriend and I have promised to order a new dish each time we visit... we want to experience the whole menu! Great quality of food and large portions, at an unbeatable price. Cant wait to go back..."
