Diner Reviews
  • "My wife and I have had two outstanding meals here in the last month. The cauliflower fritters are right up there with the best appetizers we've ever had. The pea soup was very good. And both our short rib entree and the gnocchi were excellent. I previously had the four course prix fixe, which is a terrific value. The waiters are very attentive and knowledgeable. For our money, this is one of the best restaurants in the bay area."

  • "Continues to impress, best neighborhood gem hands-down, gives Rockridge a good run for their money, in fact I don't frequent Rockridge as much since Bellanico became best in class. Thought my world collapsed when the pork shoulder confit panini fell off the menu, but discovered the home-made pastrami panini. World order has been restored."

  • "They really do an excellent job all around. Great flavors and interesting combinations that usually sound good and taste even better. Lunch service was super efficient and well staffed. I am always impressed by their wine selection. The best bet is to have your waiter tell you what to have based on what you like."

  • "My 1st time here for dinner. It was raining and it may be the reason the restaurant felt crowded (tables were pretty close) and the noise level was high. The food was great. Cauliflower fritters looked like scallops with a creamy consistency. The duck breast/duck leg confit combo had tender rare breast meat and crispy-skinned leg and with the asparagus and potato was a complete dish. I finished with the chocolate/date cake wiith almond gelato. My friend also had the duck but had the mousse-like dessert. I appreciate the corkage policy and the wines looked reasonably priced. I've already recommended it to a vegetarian couple. I will be back for the tasting menu."

  • "I can't say enough good things about Bellanico, but I'm going to try anyway. We were warmly greeted and shown to our table. I ordered the tasting menu with wine pairings, which turned out to be a great value. My courses were: a deviled egg, but stuffed with ricotta cheese, herbs, and a wafer of grana cheese; farro with arugula, olives, and cara cara oranges; risotto with oyster mushrooms and asparagus. And for dessert: a chocolate hazelnut date cake with almond gelato. The food was incredible. So well balanced and thoughtful. The wine pairings were the perfect accompaniment. And they treated us so well. I was really impressed. Everyone was attentive and kind. I know this will be one of our favorite spots for years to come."

  • "We had a marvelous dining experience for a late Sunday lunch, served by a very friendly server who knew the ins-and-outs of each dish. We had the duck confit hash and shoulder steak, both cooked to perfection. The prosecco is always just right here, and the desserts of cheesecake and panna cotta were unique, unusual and yummy. The presentation of all the dishes was perfect. We've been coming here many years now, always an enjoyable experience, cozy and warm. Kind of miss seeing the owner (also of our favorite Potrero Hill spot, Aperto) but the host in his place is equally warm and welcoming. Nice to be dining here again."

  • "We have dined here numerous times and are never disappointed. The food and service is the major reason. It is truly an inspired menu. There are enough seasonal changes in the menu to peak one's palate. Rarely do we frequent a restaurant more than a few times a year since we love to cook at home but Bellanico is the exception."

  • "The food is interesting if not a bit salty. Service was quite atrocious -- only thing that came in a timely manner was the refilling of water glasses. 10 minutes at minimum between courses which could be fine with a large group with lots to talk about -- not good for a small table. Took over 2 hours for a table of two - which I think is a bit excessive, particularly while watching other tables of 2 or more getting served and leaving within that same time period. If you are a Caucasian group of foodies who want to have time to discuss every dish between courses - you will probably enjoy this restaurant."

  • "The dou-rac pork chop was AMAZING! Once I finished it, I couldn't help but eat from the bone--so tender because they brine it. A very original dish with ligonberries on top! The meal was excellent!"

  • "It had been a long day, and we booked at Bellanico to do something different. Boy were we rewarded. The menu was different in and of itself, and every dish we tried was distinctive and delicious, from the salad to the nettle bursts to the chicken I ordered for comfort food. It was responsible and delicious. We left quite renewed."

  • "WE had a great meal. Varied menu with most items very well flavored. The duck was very tender and an ample portion. Goat raviolis in a superb sauce. We will definitely return!"

  • "We had been meaning to go for a while now, it was worth the wait. This place is a neighborhood gem. The food was outstanding, best of all the ingredients were high quality, fresh and fantastic. We will be back, this is a great find. The price was very reasonable. We went early and glad we did, it got packed really fast."

  • "I dont write reviews often but felt compelled to in this case because there are too few of these little gems around. There were four of us for brunch and we all got something different so we could share/sample from this wonderfully eclectic menu. From the house-cured salami board to the creamy, savory Frittata, French Toast topped with huckleberries and a decadent mascarpone and the hand-made Tagliatelli in a comforting, smoky red sauce of bacon, tomato and peppers, we ranked each dish at or near perfection. Great wine list with emphasis on some finer Italian wines you do see very often. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable. I see this as a new go-to spot for a lazy weekend brunch or a nice Friday night wind-down."

  • "I'm embarrassed to admit that I live in the neighborhood but, for some reason, this restaurant had escaped my attention. Probably because there's another really good Mediterranean restaurant that I frequent in the same block. I got a $50 gift voucher, so that's how and why I found it. I'll be going there a lot. The food was just excellent. The smaller appetizers were really great for when trying not to eat too much (we had the duck paté and smoked trout on endives) and, similarly, splitting a "secondi" plate and a plate of ace pasta made for a great culinary experience without leaving too full to, ermmmm, enjoy the rest of the evening !!! All washed down with a some great Italian white wine. This is going to become my new local."

  • "Twelve inches ... that would improve our dining experience. We were seated along the wall, which was fine. As indicated above, the food was outstanding and the service knowledgeable and communicative. The Tasting Menu with Wine Accompaniment was good value, and exposed my wife and I to a broad range of culinary delights. Overall an excellent dining experience. But the table was too close to our neighbor to one side. It was as if our parties were joined. This was not the case on the other side, as there was an additional 8-12 inches of space between the tables on that side. We will happily return."

  • "I took my girlfriend to Bellanico for her birthday, and the experience was wonderful. The waiter was friendly and efficient, and had a deep knowledge of the wine list and menu. The duck was superb, as was my steak - both medium rare, juicy, and delicious. The restaurant has many excellent wines to choose from, at different price levels. Our dessert, florentine donuts, was also perfect. I highly recommend this restaurant for dates, or just to splurge with friends."

  • "It's the first time that I was in the need of a good restaurant in Oakland - having lived in San Francisco the expectations towards the quality was very high. They serve very good italian influenced food that even tastes for Europeans very authentic and close to the real Italian food served in Italy far away of the touristic traps. The staff is very friendly and reads the wishes off the feices. Next time will be in Oakland I'll step back and will taste additional meals."

  • "For special occasions - since we are not rolling in money, but neither do we want to limit our tasting (including wine) options when we dine at Bellanico. Makes my honey and I feel like we're on Iron Chef and even inspires our own cooking afterwards. Always well worth it!"

  • "I have now dined three times at Bellanico after recently moving to the area. We have been seated at the same table where kitchen traffic and bathroom traffic converge and this is no coincidence. Time to find another neighborhood gem!"

  • "This place was the best food for the value of any place I have ever been. Really excellent. Warm wait staff gives excellent service. The Maitre'd knew and acknowledged our request for a table that was as quiet as possible due, tried hard and didn't flinch an eye when we asked to change tables two times before we settled in. But best of all was the food, ah, the food. Baked oysters, with leeks and prociutto, housemade ravioli in brodo, perfect crisp green salad of romaine with blood oranges, blue cheese and walnuts,...I could go on. Three of us feasted, 2 had two glasses of wine each and the total bill came to only $100. Worth the drive over the bridge from the City. This one's a keeper. Go there!"

  • "A very sophisticated menu at an excellent price--the tasting menu is a bargain. I ate at Bellanico three evenings within a three week period. The menu changes but the dishes remain consistently good and memorable. Desserts were a big hit each time. Service was attentive but not intrusive--very knowledgeable and helpful with the menu. The only thing that keeps this restaurant from perfection itself is the noise level. Too many people in a small space--you can hear every word of your neighbors" conversation."

  • "The food combines Italian and Mediterranean flavors with unexpected and delicious ingredients. All are presented well. We understand the menu is changed weekly which invites returns. The service was so helpful in suggesting menu items and describing them"

  • "This was our first experience at Bellanico and we were mightily impressed. There were four of us for dinner. The food was wonderful and the service matched it. The ambience is moderately casual, neighborhood-y, but attractive and welcoming. The food was creative and interesting, but entirely comprehensible and appealing. It was fairly loud, but the four of us, all over 60, were all able to hear and understand each other without problem. We'll be back."

  • "We enjoyed the great brunch tasting menu with excellent wine pairings ( they do the pairings very well). Our server was very helpful. The hot food was hot & cold was cold. One of us had the delightful Liberty duck confit hash and the other the baked egg over vegetables and polenta. The tasting menu leaves you satisfied but not stuffed. The only downside was the other great menu offerings we had to leave behind. We will have to go back."

  • "This restaurant just keeps getting better and better. We did the prix fix, a fantastic 4 course. Every mouthful a surprise in bursts of delicate flavors. Tgey pay attention to detail and are very gracious. Great value aswell. Wine flights fun! Fine , fine dining. My only i complaint is the noise can be deafening. Tthe restaurant should work on that."
