Diner Reviews
  • "We had a delicious dinner dining outdoors. The food was, as usual, fantastic and the service the best. I love being able to swap out salmon for tilapia in the Tilapia Mediterranean."

  • "Overall, this was a nice restaurant that needed to get things straightened out in the kitchen. One appetizer was cold and had to be sent back. Then a shrimp pasta dish only had one piece of shrimp. To make matters worse, both my wife and I felt ill later on. The good news from the kitchen is that the pizza was good. Another piece of good news was the service was great and very apologetic for the kitchen issues. I wouldn't go back. Too many other Italian restaurants with great food."

  • "Great food, consistent quality, not too noisy, nice outdoor seating, a great go to place with a guaranteed excellent experience!"

  • "Bella Via, in downtown Highland Park, is an excellent spot for an early dinner before attending a concert at nearby Ravinia. We booked a 4:30 reservation, which gave us plenty of time before the 8 p.m. concert. Since it was early, the dining room was quite quiet (when it began to fill up later, the noise level increased somewhat, but was still quite acceptable). Service was attentive, but not annoying, and the food was excellent. I ordered a seafood risotto; my wife had veal piccata: both were well-presented and delicious. One minor negative: even thought it was early and not busy, the entrees were somewhat slow coming out of the kitchen. We have dined here a number of times in recent years, and have never been disappointed."

  • "Food is consistently top quality. Out door patio is one of the best."

  • "Unfortunately, I was a little disappointed! I remembered enjoying Bella Via very much in the past but haven't been there in a long time. While our waiter was very kind, he was not very good. He didn't check back with us, water glasses were not filled, and he brought out beer bottles without glasses (at a bar you expect to drink from the bottle but not at a nice restaurant). And, the food took forever to come out of the kitchen. Thankfully we were with good company but we were getting very hungry! My husbands fish was heavily covered with sauce - and wasn't that tasty. I was glad I got a simple pasta instead of fish… I would go back and hope for a better experience. If that doesn't go so well, that will be the end of it for me..."

  • "Food SUPERB! Ambiance GREAT! Service most OUTSTANDING!"

  • "This was our second visit to Bella Via in recent weeks, and it was consistent and tasty. My only comment was that the food was not as hot as it should be served. I think that this was an issue in the kitchen rather than the server. Now that the pleasant surprise is gone from our first return visit, the restaurant must do more than be average. We are hopeful that it will."

  • "we had a very nice evening there. The service was good. Our waiter was very kind. Food was delicious."

  • "The food was good, but after being initially attentive, the service was very slow and inattentive the rest of the meal. Staff were friendly once we called their attention, but we shouldn't have to do that repeatedly! We were a party of 10, with children, for a special birthday. Dinner and dessert should not take 3 hours! We were disappointed overall."

  • "Salmon, and Tuscan style fish sp0ecial (forgot what) OK, like one of your co workers wife who uses good recipes. Nice wine list. Convenient for the movies."

  • "This is the best Italian Restaurant in Highland Park and as good or better than any in Highwood. Try the veal meatballs ! Daily specials are always good. Food is fresh and well prepared . Waiter was very knowledgeable and attentive."

  • "Too small of a table was given for party of six. Great service by waiter"

  • "The food was good, but the wait staff was great. Very friendly and speedy and efficient. There were six of us and everything came as we ordered. We definitly will return in the near future. Especially enjoyed eating out side! The noise level was ok."

  • "The food was really excellent. I had veal marsala, others in our party had ciopino de pesce, salmon and chicken zingata (a special), all of which were delicious. The service was really outstanding with the waiter and busboy very attentive and polite. We couldn't give them five stars for this reason. First, it is a very noisy place. The front isn't too bad, but the back is quite noisy. Also, they ran out of bread- which is sort of ridiculous for a restaurant, but they did have a very large party in the back room, so I wouldn't think this was a usual occurrence. We would definitely go back here again (have been before to parties and individual dining). All in all, fine dining, not too expensive."

  • "As always, a wonderful dining experience. This last time we went, though, I had the Veal Saltimbocca which was the most delicious Saltimbocca I've ever had. Simply exquisite. We've never had a bad meal, everything has always been delicious. However, what really is amazing is how they handle huge crowds with ease and friendliness. We will be back again and again!"

  • "What happened to the work ethic? If you enjoy spending money at a restaurant with a wait staff that clearly doesn't serve the customer, then dine at Bella Via. After waiting patiently for 20 minutes to be recognized, I had to call a server over to ask for service. He then delegated this to 2 other folks before 1 responded. The waiter approached our table to ask if we wanted a drink & as soon as he took the 1st order, he walked away without asking the other 5 people for their requests. When he brought our drinks he spilled the glass of wine on the table, & walked away for us to clean up. When I asked him to help, he threw a napkin on the table. He failed to give us the right appetizer and never asked if we wanted dessert or coffee."

  • "We had not been to Bella Via in several years because it was just average. We are pleased that we decided to try it anew. The food was very good, portions, ample, and entrees are served with soup or salad. The kitchen was accommodating in preparing the dishes without some ingredients, and some things on the side. Service was OK, nothing special, but they did get the order correct. I recommend that you try it on nights when the restaurant does not have a private party, because that does slow the kitchen and service down significantly. We will be going back relatively soon."

  • "We created our reservation late in the day but were able to book a 7:30 PM table on a Saturday night. My suggestion wait until 8 PM, when everyone leaves, as the restaurant caters to a senior older crowd. There was a Bar Mitzvah booked in the private dining area in the rear creating sound bleed/thumping in the main dining room when the party cranked up. The Food was good (my husband and I both enjoyed different tender flavorful Veal Dishes) and Servers were attentive. Wine selection was fair - a decent bottle to fit every price point. But notably the Glassware and silver were old - not the charming type of old. The restaurant needs to update/upgrade to draw in the younger affluent town crowd - the next generation of loyal diners. "

  • "We go here a lot, because the food is very good. However, they invariably screw up our reservation. Every single time we end up sitting at the cramped bar for over half an hour while we wait on our table. This despite always having a reservation. This past Saturday was the worst ever. We sat in the bar for 45 minutes waiting on our table to open up. Several other parties were seated while we waited. An open table was visible, but apparently not intended for us. A waiter who recognized us told the hostess to sit us at the open table. She refused. After 45 minutes we left and had a lovely dinner at Nietos. We will not soon be back to Bella Via. "

  • "Menu has wide variety of well-prepared Italian dishes, served attentively in a friendly atmosphere. We're lucky to have them as a neighborhood restaurant."

  • "Had 6:30 reservations on a Saturday night.; seated right away. Waiter came frequently early on, but once he got the idea we were not in a hurry he adjusted his pace to ours. Everyone loved their meal; all 4 plates went back empty. Portions are nice: not at all skimpy/not gargantuan . Most entrees with meat or fish were around $25-$30. A cannoli connoisseur at our table gave the cannoli high marks, and I had a fantastic gelato. The dining room was busy the whole evening, but noise never interfered with our ability to comfortably carry on a conversation. We left at nine, and at no point felt rushed along. I have taken kids as young as 6 here when they have their outdoor tables set up on the sidewalk. Have never left disappointed."

  • "Great restaurant for dinner before or after a movie at the Renaissance theatre across the street."

  • "There is usually a good crowd at Bella Via by 7:00 PM; if you like a quieter spot, be sure to finish you meal by about 6:45 PM. The food is very good; however, as the restaurant fills up, the service seems to slow down. We enjoyed our salads, minestrone soup, chicken vesuvio, salmon, and pasta dishes. The coffee was delicious, we were too full to order dessert."

  • "This was our 2d visit to Bella Villa. 1st visit was wonderful - our waiter was the best we've ever had during our 23 years of marriage and the food was superb. On Valentine's Day, the hostess took us to our table on time - to a part of the restaurant we didn't know existed. In the back, there are 2 brightly lit party rooms with large tables. Our waiter was the same - but his service this time was suspect. Appetizer came quickly, water was filled only after being empty for a long time. Pasta failed to arrive with dinner, found out our waiter was bar-tending and also trying to service tables in the front. Just poor service and horrible ambience. If you don't get in a table in the front - wait until one becomes available."

  • "Bella has a nice setting and good menu selection. Unfortunately, our particular server was overly shy and/or poorly trained. She didn't introduce herself, didn't ask about any questions on the menu, didn't give a taste of the wine before pouring full glasses, never asked how the food was and never said thank you when we were done. She seemed nice enough, but just not well suited for this job. I could hear other servers doing a much better job. That aside, the food was only average. While certainly better than Olive Garden, it did not rise to the level of many other local Italian options. Considering other places we could have gone, it was just a disappointment."
