Diner Reviews
  • "Although this restaurant was close to the "touristy" part of the Riverwalk, the indoor ambiance felt anything but touristy. Seating was close yet intimate. Waitstaff was exceptionally attentive and eager to explain dishes and make recommendations. The Frito Misto (fried calamari with artichoke quarters) provided an interesting and delicious alternative to the typical calamari appetizer offering. Based upon other reviewer's comments, my husband chose the pork tenderloin main course and it met all his expectations regarding tenderness and flavor. I chose that evening's Salmon special. My entree was so feather-light and moist that I barely had to chew it. We enjoyed a friendly visit with the owner and definitely plan on returning."

  • "Bella is always a hit and this was no exception. Paella was excellent, as was the Eggplant Josephine. Very nice special wine was offered as well. Service was perfect."

  • "Bella On The River was the perfect choice for our 17th wedding anniversary. Food was excellent, wait staff friendly, and the ambiance perfect. My wife and I will definitely recommend this to everyone!"

  • "Bella's was great! Great service! A little disappointed in how close together the tables were. The restuarant was unique and romantic but a little cramped. The food was awesome, but a little pricey."

  • "I can't stop talking about this restaurant! It doesn't look like much on the outside, but I LOVED the inside! It is so cute & quaint. I estimate it doesn't seat more than 50 people. It's very cozy. The owner, David, greets you at the top of the stairs. He makes an effort to talk to you. We went there for our anniversary. David was courtesious & congratulated us. The waiters are very knowledgeable about the wine & which one pairs well with your food. Our waiter was extremely helpful & knew when to suggest certain things. We were the right amount of full. The mussels are a MUST. The t-bone lamb was amazing! Everything I got was light and not heavy with cream sauce. This is a must go-to place. Definitely will go back again & recommend to all."

  • "This hidden gem is sure to exceed all your expectations from the moment you arrive. The very talented Chef offers a seasonal menu that includes the most amazing selections of appetizers, salads, entrées, and desserts. The food is not the only thing that will make this dining experience special; the wine list is another area you will enjoy exploring. Everyone at Bella is obviously very proud of their restaurant and proudly demonstrates that in every detail. I have no doubt that after one dining experience that you and your guest(s) will have Bella On The River at the top of your favorite restaurants on the San Antonio Riverwalk."

  • "everything about the restaurant ws wonderful. The ambience of an old cellar really works and is very romantic with the low level lighting and the candlelight.. The food was amazing and the service extrememly competent. The only negative is that all of the tables are crammed together so having any privacy is non existent. The tables are small and the chairs not very comfortable."

  • "Very romantic. Reasonably priced. Specials - though the waitstaff does not quote the price - are in-line with the menu prices and my special (veal short ribs and pork belly) was amazing. Wine list is not extensive but runs the gamut of regions/variety, and again is reasonably priced. Small sized restaurant so make sure to make reservations. Great find along the Riverwalk."

  • "The setting is gorgeous. You feel like you're in a wine cellar. The owner and staff are very welcoming and accessible. The bruschetta appetizer was EXCELLENT. The halibut was good. I was a little disappointed with the scallops. Only serve three. Seems skimpy for the price. We had the halibut but the side vegetable didn't get served until after my wife was finished with her fish. I wouldn't have expected that of a restaurant of this quality."

  • "We've been to Bella's a couple of times now and everytime we go it is a great experience. Small restaurant with great wait staff and hugly amazing food. The chef definately knows what he's doing in the kitchen. Not a place to take a large group however, because the dining area a very small and cramped. However, if you want to take that special someone out for an amazing meal, I would highly recommend Bella's on the River!!"

  • "This place had some outstanding reviews so I chose this spot as 1 of my dinners to take my girlfriend on our anniversary and the day of my reservation the owner called me paersonally to confirm, so I was looking forward to seeing what it was about. Upon arrival I knew this wasn't going to be good for me the place is so crowded that I couldn't hear my girlfriend talk. Then the service was horrible it took 30 min to even get my first appetizer, then when I decided this place wasn't for me I asked for my check and received a snobby attitude from my waiter , Then he tried putting a glass of wine on my bill that I never received they corrected it. In the end I found another restaurant to celebrate my anniversary."

  • "The fried green tomatoes were excellent as were the entrees and desserts. The service was a little spotty for such a nice restaurant. Our drinks were slow to be refilled, but the waiter's description of food items and recommendations were spot on."

  • "We will definitely be back. This is a quaint spot with great choices. Already spreading the word to locals."

  • "Very good food and personalized service. Thought about eating outside but only a couple of tables and not really pleasant view. Small dining room, therefore not much privacy. If close to loud people could be uncomfortable . Beer and wine only, and if you like margaritas (the drink in San Antonio), then you are out of luck. Would go back for food, but not if I wanted al fresco."

  • "Quaint little restaurant on the river walk. Great service, great food! Probably the best calamari I have ever had! I would highly recommend this restaurant :)"

  • "Great environment - excellent food. Appetizers were creative and very tasty. Off menu item of the tomahawk chop for entree was really good. Excellent meat quality and grilling was well executed. Ordered medium rare and it was perfect - not easy on a 2" thick steak."

  • "Title does not lie; this is an actual intimate restaurant with extremely excellent food, ON THE RIVERWALK. If you're looking for the antithesis of typical Riverwalk dreck, this is it."

  • "Bella's is a great restaurant for a nice intimate dinner. Even though the tables are a bit close together, the atmosphere is very Mediterranean. The food is nicely prepared and presented. It's not really designed for groups larger than six people. That's one reason to expect a more intimate dinner."

  • "We come to San Antonio every year and decided this year to go all out non-Mexican food. There are a number of fairly new restaurants that are rather upscale and vibrant. Bella is a great find (tables are really close and people are stacked up waiting). Food was excellent and service was good. David and Steven did a great job managing the floor which appears somewhat chaotic by design. This one is a keeper and we are looking forward to our next visit. "

  • "I wish I could rate this special place more highly. We were warmly welcomed by the owner/bartender and the service was attentive and personable - although the server explained just a bit too much about each item on the menu. Which gets to my critique - the restaurant tries too hard to be gourmet. It serves up some strange combinations of flavors and foods which sound better than they turn out to be. In fact, the halibut had no flavor at all, although moist and fresh. My pasta with lobster and crab should have been so much more flavorful than it was, and the pea shoots added an odd note. But this is a very special place with lots of atmosphere - perhaps we just missed the best dishes!"

  • "A good place with a very nice ambiance. Food was pretty good but have had better cooked and flavored steaks other places. A bit dry. Good service and a nice waiter. Nice ambiance. "

  • "Very good food. Extremely attentive service. It's easy to tell the owner and servers enjoy what they do and are there to make your experience the best it can be. I will be back the next time I am in the area. "

  • "Bella is by far the best restaurant on the Riverwalk. The menu is small but everything is excellent. The specials are always extra special. "

  • "The food is fabulous! Inventive combinations that taste great. The service is superb. It's a small place that smelled a little musty when we first entered - probably because of the damp from the river. However, it was unnoticeable after a few minutes. The tables are very close together because it's a small place. I don't usually like that, but the food is so spectacular that we'll go again soon. Highly recommended."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our meal at Bella. It was a nice contrast to the hustling and bustling restaurants on the Riverwalk if you want a special occasion meal."

  • "David and his staff have created the fun, comfy, delicious place to dine on the river. We have dined in San Antonio for over 20 years and keep coming back to Bella for pre-concert/show meals and when we just want a great night out. It doesn't get any better. Best to make a reservation."

  • " If you haven't found this amazing restaurant yet, take the time to look it up and make a reservation. From the moment you arrive all the way up to the time you leave, you will be amazed at how wonderful this place truly is. The service, food, wine and mixed drink options are beyond anything you will find along the river today. This comfy hidden gem can only seat around 40'ish people inside but trust me when I say you will be glad your one of the select few who are lucky enough to experience any of the offerings this young chef has to offer you. The staff is very proud of the offerings and very happy to share insights in any dish and they are ready to help you pair the perfect wine to compliment your meal. Check Bella out soon. "

  • "Great service. The food was pretty good. The service was excellent. Arrive early to beat the crowd. Our reservation was at 6:15 and the restaurant was not crowded but by the time we left, it was PACked"

  • "We were in San Antonio for a conference and heard about Bella's. It is probably the best restaurant on the River Walk. Glad we ate outside, since inside it was quite noisy (energetic!!). the food was well prepared and of good quality. The service good. We would return if we were in San Antonio again. "

  • "Bella on The River is gem. The service was excellent and they were even able to accommodate an extra guest at the last minute. Our table ordered everything from steaks to pasta to seafood and all was delicious. I enjoyed the diver scallops and look forward to going back for another round. While the restaurant is not very large, the ambience, service and food make up for any cramped quarters."

  • "This was our second experience at Bella. Once again, we were not disappointed in the least. We arrived prior to our reservation time, but were able to be seated in spite of that. The space is not large, yet the ambience and environment is such that we felt like the only people there. Patrick was an attentive and knowledgeable server. His tremendous service made our experience all the sweeter. We were celebrating my wife's birthday and the staff all took great care to bless her with sweet birthday greetings and a complementary dessert. I would recommend Bella to anyone who desires an intimate environment to enjoy with friends or loved ones. Thank you for an amazing dining experience."
