The service and the food were great. The atmosphere was nice but the dining area is compact and noisy when full. It would be a great place when sitting next to one person but speaking across the table and hearing one another proved a bit difficult.

Our favourite restaurant in San Antonio. We liked it so much we went back a second time and we never do that. Make a reservation though, tough to get in. Patrick, our waiter, was the best we have run into and we have dined at some of the top pretty outstanding restaurants all over the world. kb

I was finally able to use a 2013 Gift Certificate...the service was lacking, customer service was poor with the waiter who waited on us....the environment was "clausterphobic" for me and my dining partner....tables were close, food was barely warm when served, prices were over the top for the quality....I can only recommend it for a tourist, but not local diners....sorry.

Wife and I went to Bella during the coldest days of the season, at least 40 degrees colder than normal. Why is that important? Because we were seated right next to the door. We can't blame Bella for the weather but if you're asking me about my experience then I needed to mention it. Every time someone entered we felt the chill (and our food felt it too). As for ambiance, we were disappointed that the room was neither romantic nor comfortable. The tables are small and plain, like the rest of the decor. They pack you in tight. Again the weather made it impossible to sit outside which might have changed my perspective. I have to admit that I struggled with the Mediterranean cuisine, as it was different from my American sensibilities. I had wolf fish, the special of the night, and wish I had the Halibut. My wife enjoyed her steak which was prepared rare but lost it's heat because of the constant door opening. For this reason I cannot say if it was great, but it was good. I'll leave that to the experts.

Think really cold--think hurrying along the tropically planted River Walk hoping you are headed in the right direction--think happy when the Bella sign appears followed by a warm welcome from a young lady at the bottom of the entrance stairs--think even happier when reaching the very cozy small stone walled dining room at the top of the indoor stairs, filled with lots of very happy and chatty (and warm) looking diners all sitting pretty close together--think wonderful smells of treats to come all being delivered by hustling, professional waiters in winter black--think reasonably good pours of decent wines at somewhat reasonable cost--and then think---- Fabulous Food! Oh, sooooo good. I had the duck and hubby had scallops. Shared antipasto before and in-house gelato-like ice-cream after. We were sated but not uncomfortably full. Just right everything about this place. This is a grown-up dining establishment for those who enjoy finely prepared food at prices to match. A terrific experience with which to end a fun week in lovely, interesting San Antonio. -

This place was really darling. It's underneath the street and it seems to be very old, but in a historic way, not an outdated way. Lots of stone on the walls, rustic. The food was very good and the staff very friendly and appreciative of their guests. I would recommend.

The food was fantastic and service was great, but this is a very small restaurant with century-old stone walls that echo all of the noise made in the room. The first part of our meal was wonderful, but about halfway through our main course a very loud group appeared at the bar (which is in the same room as the dining tables) and made it impossible to enjoy the rest of our meal. The staff did what they could to accommodate everyone, but the space was just too small.

The restaurant is warm, friendly with an intimate environment. It is very small and quaint. The owner is hands on and seems to really enjoy meeting his guests. The food is excellent. The eggplant appetizer is sooo good and so are the sea scallops as an entree. Roasted beet salad was also memorable. The wine special was impressive but inexpensive. We highly recommend this restaurant.

We celebrated our wedding anniversary in San Antonio and started with dinner at Bella on the River. It was a wonderful experience. It is a small, intimate restaurant with a lot of charm and history to the riverwalk. Due to the rain we were seated inside, the outdoor seating looked beautiful. The indoor seating was good, but very warm. Everything else about our experience was fantastic. The service was great, they even wished us a happy anniversary. I got the pork tenderloin and polenta. DELICIOUS! My husband got the pasta dish. His serving size was a bit too much, especially following his carpaccio appetizer. My soup was a great starter. Loved this place and would highly recommend.

Bella offers a very unique dining experience because it offers all the things that make for a wonderful evening. Great ambience, outstanding food, wine and very helpful service. Our server was very helpful explaining the menu and wine list. He gave us two wine samples to taste before our final choice. The wine list is good and very well priced. I had the scallops as my entree and it was delicious. I look forward to a return trip and like the idea that the chef changes the menu with the season. We will recommend this restaurant to friends.

In a cellar below an historic building, so a difficult room for a restauranteur. On the Riverwalk, so the location can attract traffic. We liked the vibe, even though tables are crammed in there so close together to give the place enough covers to survive. This was the case with the previous occupant. The food and service were excellent, and they have a good wine list. But I could make most of this food at home, so why pay the prices they charge when there are so many places here now that are way above that level and charge less? Too crowded to be "romantic" and justify the prices with the ambiance.

We were told they did not have a children's menu but that the chef could make pasta or chicken for the kids. Both items were excellent! The corn soup was tasty! Scallops perfect. Mussels were some of the best we have had. Amanda was our server. She made sure everything was just right even though the place was packed. My husband and I went to this restaurant to have a quiet evening because we had heard it was a nice romantic restaurant. It was one of the noisiest, jam-packed (too many tables in a small space) restaurants that I have ever been to. I had to scream to to talk my husband and that really ruined the dining experience. The food was very good but it took almost 45 minutes to receive our entrees after the salads. I'm not sure that I would go back.
