Diner Reviews
  • "Because we are belgians we were excited to go, but disappointed at the end. The staff was not that great and food average. After only 50 minutes our dining was finished (apero, starter, main course and coffee). Even for American standards quickly. A 20% tip was already included in the final bill, not even the choise."

  • "It was mostly great. I've been here for brunch a few times and it has been excellent all around. First time going for dinner, the food and drinks were great! However, although the server was very kind, the server interrupted me and my friend a lot (a bit too frequently too) in a nice but somehow creepy way. At first we were just thinking he likes to talk, but by the end of the meal we were both somewhat annoyed. "

  • "Went to Sunday brunch and really loved the Mais waffles. My companions liked, but didn't love their selections- French toast and quiche (too salty). Hostess was great, waiter was so-so, but part of that was because the place was so busy. We were lucky, though, and didn't have to wait for a table. I would definitely return."

  • "Not being too familiar with the Capitol Hill neighborhood, we did some research and found this highly rated little Belgian restaurant in "Barracks Row". We met some friends and were seated at the highly attended restaurant for an 11:30 brunch reservation. We placed our orders- I had the Mango Waffles: super light and fluffy, served with fresh and delicious peaches, raspberries, mangoes and more. My friend had the quiche which she and her husband both agreed was flavorful and very well done. My husband enjoyed his spinach eggs and bacon. He said the bloody mary was 'ok'. I would definitely recommend this to others looking for a great brunch spot and fun neighborhood to explore. We visited the Eastern Market- not too far and a lot to see!"

  • "We sat outside at a small table and enjoyed wonderful food and beautiful weather. Belga's dishes are all beautifully presented and what I've sampled has been delicious. It gets very crowded so I recommend reservations. Indoors the seating is pretty tight, but enjoy the food and atmosphere!"

  • "I love this place. But it has a terrible service. So so rude the waiter."

  • "Brunch, cocktails after work, or just sipping wine or beer and people watching. Belga has plenty of interesting menu items, and of course, Belgian beers. But relaxing outside on a nice day with a few friends and making your way through the array of offerings featuring mussels is probably the best way to get a feel for what's special about this place. Good food, very good service, and a neighborhood vibe."

  • "hesitate to tell the truth-- for selfish reasons (want seats available for me)"

  • "Excellent brunch for the money. Delicious waffles. Service could be better as they seem quite understaffed, but I guess it's adequate for the type of establishment."

  • "I went here for brunch and really enjoyed my steak and eggs and my bloody mary. The bloody mary had a celery foam on top which is different and tasted great."

  • "We usually have a great time at Belga Cafe, unfortunately the service this time was horrible. It seemed like there was only one competent waiter out of many. We made reservations for 5:00pm, arrived early and seated at the bar to wait for an outside table. Apparently there was miscommunication between waiters. Somehow people who arrived with no reservations were seated before us and a few other's also waiting for an outside table. 5:30p came around and asked about our table which we were finally seated. Unfortunately had an incompetent waiter that apparently had too many tables to wait on and bad service overall. We were never welcomed, rushed to order food and threatened to move us if we didn't order food AFTER we had ordered appetizers"

  • "It was a perfect place for a brunch on a Saturday am. And with a tight schedule I was a bit worried. But the food was presented promptly and was delicious. And we got finished with time to spare!"

  • "We arrived on time for our 830 open table reservation. Though the reservation was in the book it was there in name only and it quickly became apparent that all it got us was a place on a waiting list. After 20 minutes dodging waiters standing at the bar, we were offered a sidewalk table on a cool night. We took it and were seated ten minutes later. Then the real wait began. No waiter for about 20 more minutes. Drinks were reasonably prompt but another 20 minutes to give our order and then about 35-40 minutes until the food arrived. The food was excellent and the staff was very nice but I would recommend only for Mondays and Tuesdays in August - they do not have their administrative act together."

  • "We went back to Belga Cafe with visiting friends from Cambridge, MA and were impressed by how much the food, already very good, had improved since our last visit. We ordered a wide range of dishes, including smoked duck, sea bass, short ribs, and the ever-popular mussels, and nobody was disappointed. The nebbiolo wine was a tad pricey but worth it. And the pear vodka martini -- fabulous! Two stars as the designated price seems over-optimistic: 3 is more like it, at least if you're going to drink wine. We will certainly return to Belga for future festivities."

  • "Belga's servoce has really declined since all the focus has shifted to the new venue on14th Street. The food is still good."

  • "I visit her about 4-5 times a year, and wish it were more often. My friend loves the roast vegetables; I love the steak frites (thanks for cooking them the way I like). The variety of dishes with their Belgian touches is always fun to explore, too. Great wine and beer selection."

  • "This was my second time at Belga Cafe and I loved it even more than the first time. It's a small restaurant, so I would recommend reservations, but the food is incredible and the service is on point. I took my boyfriend for his birthday and we had a blast, and he was blown away by the food (which was the whole point of taking him there...he's such a foodie!)."

  • "We had dinner at Belga for the first time and are eager to return. It was comfortable, everything smelled fantastic and our food was terrific. If only we could eat more!"

  • "cheese plate left much to be desired. mussels were good- the reviews were legit on that. Lamb meal portion is super small, even for a gourmet plate. lots of spinach and mushrooms took up most of the plate. not well proportioned. angus beef steak was very good. frites very good. lots of mayo on salad and to dip frites in. beer selection was pretty sweet. expensive, but cool to have so many options. would come again for beers."

  • "My fiancé and I came here. For a romantic celebration of my birthday. Although there was a little wait before we were able to place our order, our waiter was very attentive. The crab and chicken cigars were delicious and a perfect appetizer to share. We both orders mussels and frites, and were not disappointed. The mussels were plump and the sauce had many layers of flavor. We told our friends about Belga and then ended up returning there for brunch a couple days later!"

  • "Four of us went on a Thursday night. The restaurant was completely filled, and very noisy. Staff was hard to find, and not attentive. We all ordered mussels; shortly after the waiter returned and said there were only enough mussels for two orders. I am amazed. This was at 7:15 in the evening and mussels are one of the restaurant's specialities."

  • "Make reservations here. It just makes sense. It was pouring outside and people still came. Anyway i overheard that there was a 1 hr wait. I had reservations and was seated pretty quickly. I had waffles and fruit. My husband had the mussels. Everything was delicious. I cant wait to return the next time im in dc"

  • "What an amazing menu, and a delicious brunch. However, the place was packed and the wait was long, so I'm glad I had reserved a table. I had the smoked salmon benedict with asparagus, and my friend had the ham & cheese omelet. We started by splitting the onion tart, and finished with an apple-cinnamon waffle with fruit. It was all so good. Everything was properly prepared, you could taste all the flavors and the food was well-balanced. For such a small place with such good quality, I was surprised that there was a large variety on the menu. They are open late some nights, and I bet you could still get a waffle at 10 pm! I know I'll be back."

  • "Went here for brunch, and the food was amazing. I tried a couple of their waffles, and frankly wanted to order the entire menu. We had lovely service from the hostess and bartender, but our waiter was abysmal. Barely spoke to us, didn't offer coffee refills, and dropped the check so fast you'd think it was on fire. Overall I had a great brunch, but disappointed to be so rushed at a table."

  • "We were on vacation visiting DC and my best friend invited us here for Sunday Brunch. We had a reservation thank goodness as the wait list was over an hour. Place was packed wall-wall but staff and patrons were all in a good mood. The brunch was served in a timely manner and was SUPERB! My husband is from Belgium and was impressed as was I with their traditional Belgian dishes. Food was so good that we went back on Wednesday night for dinner and again mussels, stews and croquettes were fantastic. We wished we had a place like this is California was very very good!"

  • "I went on a Wednesday at 6p. I don't know if this was a server or cooki mistake, but my biggest complaint is that my medium rare NY strip came out medium well and my fries didn't quite live up to twice fried standards. The meat was very tender and the pepper sauce was very good, peppery without being overpowering. My B Too visit was better, so I suspect food prep can easily improve. Though I was flying solo, the service was spot on. Extensive single malt list."

  • "Love this place. The Maître d is great and wants everyone's experience to be great. We also Have our favorite waiter. Nice wine list. The steak frites is hard to beat!"

  • "I came to this restaurant with high expectations from the rave reviews that were on Yelp but to say the least it was sub-par. For the most part the staff was friendly except the waiter. I don't feel like he attended to our needs. I asked for an omelette with spinach and onions. He brought eggs and spinach sauteed with onions on the side. He brought my friends omelette without cheese. The food was just okay. I don't think I will be visiting here again."

  • "I love Belga, which is why I put up with the ridiculous waits, even when I have reservations. I went this weekend with a group of 3 and they didn't seat us until 45 minutes after our reservation. There is very little space inside the restaurant to wait and the weather was bad, so we were squished up against a wall for that entire time. Like I said, I love the food, though, which is why I still keep on coming back. They should figure out a better way to predict wait times or not allow so many people to make reservations at the same time, though, because this is not the first time I have had this issue."

  • "Not often you find a place that makes both Liege and Brussels Waffles!! What a treat. Reservations were perfect because the restaurant fills up fast on a Sunday!"

  • "Good food. Happy we had reservations. Very busy and space is tight."

  • "Very popular neighborhood cafe but it scarcely lives up to its "Best Of ..." hype -- at least for brunch. Portions were small and unremarkable, eggs and hash browns greasy. Tables are closely packed giving it a bustling vibe, but it makes it hard to hold a decent conversation, despite measures to soften the sound. Instead it feels as if they care more about packing people in than providing a good experience. Service was efficient and friendly. This is my second time here for brunch, and overall I would rate it as disappointing. I don't understand the long lines to eat in a sub-par place."

  • "Great authentic Belgian food with an amazing tap list and bottle collection! Warm european feel to this place with a fantastic staff of Belgian beer lovers. This is a must do while in DC."

  • "Having seen the lines at brunch-time, my daughters recommended this restaurant. The menu was interesting, but most entrees seemed too much -- too big, too complicated. One daughter got the Belgian waffle with apples, which, given the price, actually was a smallish portion. The other got green eggs with spinach and pesto, which she said were good -- but an enormous portion. Seeing green eggs was off-putting but amusing. I ended up ordering sides -- two eggs and hash browns. They were fine and about the right amount of food, although the hash browns were greasy. I would like to have had toast or English muffin as a side option. Two of us had Belgian hot chocolate, which was OK, but not the rich chocolate experience we expected."

  • "We had reservations for Brunch on a Sunday. We arrived 10 min early and checked in. We had to wait over 40 min. past our reservation time to get a table. This is our second such experience with this restaurant group (we waited over an hour at B Too on a Sunday reservation). Unless you enjoy waiting, we suggest you go elsewhere. Also, they forgot one of our orders, but took it off the bill when we pointed it out."

  • "Belga cafe will definitely not disappoint in the realm of its cuisine. My medium rare steak WAS medium rare. and every dish scored points on presentation (without excessiveness), taste, and timeliness. I can not recommend one specific dish as everything I have tried has been on equal footing. It is a crowded space, and unless you are near the front door it should be fine. Do not allow yourself to be seated near the door when it is cold out. The rush of air is immensely unpleasant and the place is very busy(rightfully so!)"

  • "I love Belga - the location, food, drinks... But every time I go there I swear I will never go again because even with a reservation you are always seated at least 30 minutes late. I went for brunch on Sunday and was seated 40 minutes after our reservation time after I begged and told them I had to catch a train. For customers this is really frustrating. In that wait time, I could have gone across the street to one of the other restaurants that do not take reservations and gotten a table there."
