Diner Reviews
  • "Had an early lunch with a friend. Waiter kept us waiting while he folded napkins by the bar. The manager came to take our order instead when my friend asked if there was anyone who could take our order. Overall, the food was quite good, albeit slightly overpriced for lunch. No wonder very few diners when we were there."

  • "In the past Belga has been a pleasant place for dinner. At our latest outing, the restaurant was very hot and humid (apparently Belga has no air conditioning). The noise level was very high. The waiter was curt and inattentive. And we were overcharged -- items appeared on the bill that were not ours."

  • "I have eaten there a number of times and the food is always good. Although this time i was less impressed with the Frites. They were not bad but not as memorable as in the past. Otherwise, we went with the Executive (steak) salad and it was good."

  • "I purposely skipped lunch when I went to Belgacafe for dinner. I was ready for a hearty Belgian meal to complement my tasty Belgian beer. For the prices listed on the menu, I expected a generous portion of pasta. Too bad I couldn't afford to stay and enjoy another beer after dinner!"

  • "Went here for Sunday brunch and had poached eggs. The dish was delicious, and my friend seemed to enjoy his dish as well. The reservation got us seated immediately during a busy time, which was nice. The service was great -- until the end. Though I know the restaurant is busy, flat out telling us you need the table as I'm finishing my coffee is rude. We didn't stay for more than an hour in total, and we just wanted to sit and chat for a little bit after we finished our meal. However, all of our dishes and water were taken right away after we paid, and it left a bad taste in my mouth. Unfortunately, while I enjoyed the food, I will not be going back."

  • "This Sunday when I met some friends for brunch, I was less than satisfied. We made a reservation. I arrived early to ensure the reservation would be ready when my fellow diners arrived. We were seated 10 minutes late, which I could forgive had there been a line, but there wasn't. The waiter acted bothered that he had to be there, when we actually saw him at our table, which was rare. The food was even less than delicious. I am still not sure that mine was even cooked properly. The waiter had to be all but begged for water and coffee refills. We were there no more than an hour total and the reason for most of our stay was waiting for service. What should have been a nice leisurely brunch was annoying and the food didn't meet the price tag."

  • "My wife and I met another couple on a Friday night. We all enjoyed the prix fixe meals offered for restaurant week. Belga offers a nice selection of wines to complement the meal. The restaurant was busy on a Friday night but the service was good."

  • "The Belga is a great spot with a creative cook and menu for most tastes."

  • "Despite very good food and service, our evening at Belga Cafe was disappointing due to the uncomfortably hot conditions in the dining room. The air conditioning system could definitely use an upgrade. We'll go back when the weather is cooler. We especially liked the cold avocado soup and the South African Sea bass."

  • "I was very glad I made a reservation in advance of our Sunday brunch. Once we were seated our server didn't introduce himself, and only recommended anything after we asked. We were given three menus for a table of six. They seemed to be a little overwhelmed because of how busy it was. Regardless, the food was amazing and I would definitely go back."

  • "One should have a reservation if planning to come after 10 am; otherwise, be prepared to wait. The food is pricey and the portions are large. You can probably choose between the appetizer or the entree."

  • "I don't know how many times I've eaten here. Over the years the neighborhood has blossomed with new and very good restaurants. But still Belga is our go to place."

  • "I was looking for a nice brunch spot in DC with my family. Never heard or have been to Belga Cafe but after doing some research, it seemed like a nice place. We were about 10 minutes late to our reservation because of D.C. traffic but I communicated with the front desk and they were extremely professional and accommodating. Will go back again."

  • "I will never understand restaurants that take reservations, yet have no interest in abiding by them. The whole situation at this restaurant last Sunday morning was chaos. Zero organization and little to no help from the staff. We were finally seated 40 minutes after our reservation time. Our server was friendly enough, but not attentive. The food was - and I hate to say this about any restaurant - terrible. The frites were limp and underseasoned. The Croque Monsieur could hardly qualify as a grilled cheese, and the Mais Waffles were soggy, bland, and altogether unpleasant. Combine that with a hugely overpriced $7.50 bottle of Oberon and the whole experience was just one big disappointment."

  • "The Waffles here are amazing. The whipped cream is real. The bacon comes in a bucket. A BUCKET OF BACON!!!! What more can you want?"

  • "The food is absolutely wonderful for brunch. Their waffles are second to none and they have very unique options compared to most Barracks Row establishments. The coffee is delectable as well. I recommend making a reservation as the word is out and quite a crowd forms on the weekends for brunch. The food service is excellent as well. Our server, Eduardo, promptly handled our every need despite juggling many tables on a crowded Sunday morning. However, their entrance bottle necks when it is crowded and their host can become overwelmed. Overall, a fantastic place. I will definitely be going back!"

  • "Typical DC brunch - vibrant crowd, good drinks, packed tight with people, covered, outdoor space and overpriced, yet delicious food. I went on a Sunday early afternoon and with my reservation was able to get my party of 4 seated right away. It was good food, but the portions were a little small so I was hungry not too long after. The service was very fast though!"

  • "Dined here to watch Belgium world cup match. Waffles were delicious. The service was top notch."

  • "Ça se delaisse. Food quickly, too quickly prepared, client treated as ignorant. They lost track of the good quality-price balance they had a few years ago. Not coming back anytime soon. Bread was good, even great. Not enough of a reason to go back, though."

  • "Their brunch had more variety than most places; portions moderate but really delicious. Highly recommend."

  • "Love the wafles!!! They have so many different options.. I had savory and a sweet one! Both were perfect!!"

  • "Dined with our young grandson whose palate is limited but the menu offered a simple burger and (delicious) fries. Grandson gave burger high marks. My husband and I shared the mussels with frites, and Salade Roulade. The Salade was creative and flavorful. Even our grandson asked to return on this trip."

  • "Slow service for a set menu dinner was a surprise. Food was fine and the different beers were interesting (even though the glasses were never more than half full). The night didn't seem very special. We're they prepared for us?"
    Dined on 6/24/2014
  • "This is our third time at Belga, and we ate outside this time around. All three of us enjoyed the different dishes. However, be prepared to spend a lot. The wine is extremely expensive--$12-15 per glass, and the main entrees are in the high $20's. The fries are usually the highlight, but this go around I would say they were ok--seemed a bit tired like they had been sitting for too long."
    Dined on 6/22/2014
  • "Waffles are the best we've had in DC. The mussels are really good too. Beer menu is extensive, which is a huge plus for us. The Beglium FIFA watch party was awesome, there and at B-Too!"

  • "I love the food at this restaurant, and always look forward to dining here. On Friday my friend and I once again enjoyed fantastic meals, but I was surprised that the service missed the finesse that the quality of food there, and the ambiance, would encourage. Water was poured rather sloppily, getting plates and the tablecloth wet. I finished my meal first, and 3 times someone tried to remove my plate even though my friend was clearly still eating. Please, let your staff know, do NOT clear anyone's plate until everyone is finished! Then the bill was brought immediately after clearing both of our plates. I wanted dessert and coffee, but was not asked, and so the opportunity for additional revenue was missed."

  • "Came here during a World Cup match, which made the restaurant more lively. Belga Cafe serves authentic beers and wines, and even more authentic food. The meal was a pleasure, from the warm bread basket to the amazing steak frites (medium rare), washed down with a good Tremens. Barracks Row is a great street for foodies too."

  • "If you are looking for a quick European fix, the food at Belga Cafe will make you think you are in Brussels. Loved the selection of mussel dishes and the frites are fabulous. The escargot fritters would have been good if they'd been hot -- a real disappointment. But if you want to hear your dining companion, wait until the World Cup is over!"

  • "I asked the server for two courses, chef's choice. The first was a delicious steak tartre, served with gherkins and lightly dressed bitter greens. The main course, a braised rabbit was served with root vegetables in a beautiful red wine reduction. Wine pairings were spot on. Dessert was a simple, yet tasty hot fudge sundae with Belgian chocolate and whipped cream. Service was friendly and attentive. Belga is one of those restaurants I always visit when I'm in DC."

  • "Went here for Father's Day. Had to wait almost an hour despite having a reservation. Most of the dishes were subpar. Had a decent experience in the past. Was hoping for a similar or better experience this time around, but was sorely disappointed. Don't know if I will be returning to Belga."

  • "Fantastic mussels, omelettes, and the waffles are amazing!"

  • "We got seated around 12:30 & the crowd was starting to form. The host said they'd wipe off our table. They did not. I tried to order the belgian hot chocolate on the menu, the waiter said we don't have it in the summer & I don't write the menu. My entree (the quiche) was FABULOUS. I would order that a million times again. My dessert, the Triple Crown of Mousses, was just ok. I would have just have preferred a bowl of the plain Belgian chocolate mousse, which is divine by itself. The other 2 mousses had gross looking & tasting shaved fruit strips covered in some sort of sauce on top. The worst part about the meal was the crowd of people waiting for tables standing all around the tables outside & watching us eat. Creepy & annoying."
    Dined on 6/15/2014
  • "I loved the waffles with fruit and enjoyed dining outside. However, it's hard to recommend the place when we had to wait almost half an hour with a reservation."
    Dined on 6/15/2014
  • "Went for Brunch and really was surprised that the food and service was just mediocre. The several orders of eggs were not well cook (too soft) and service attention from our primary server was just ok. Wouldn't visit this spot again..."

  • "Great food, but we were rush. We had the table for 90 minutes before someone came over and said someone else was waiting for our table. I know we were there a while, but it kind of left a bad taste in my mouth."
    Dined on 6/14/2014
  • "I was really excited to have dinner here after looking at their menu online. I was surpised when they gave me different menu then what I had just seen online because I was really excited for a couple of items and they were no longer on the menu. I understand changing the menu but then update the website. The Appetizers we had were very good and Octopus and Foie gras but the entrees Lamb and Fish I shared were nothing special fish and Lamb both over cooked. I would recommend this place if you enjoy good beer the have a beer/wine list 37 pages long."
    Dined on 6/12/2014
  • "I was very disappointed after all the good things I had heard. From the mediocre ambiance to the arrogant waiter, my initial impression was not good. The prices are ridiculous, the beer is in bottles with a poor selection on tap and food prices were too expensive for normal patrons. Oh well, I won't be back"

  • "As we were from Belgium, I wanted to know if the food and beer was as good as back home. I was not dissapointed. They had a lot of Belgian beers on the menu list. I can recommend the Leffe."

  • "The waffles with brunch were AMAZING. Great little spot on Barracks Row with a view of the street. The issue we had was with our wait for the reservation. We didn't get seated until 30 minutes after our scheduled time, and it seemed as though we were forgotten while other parties took our table. Not a good start to brunch, but at least the food delivered."
