A word from Beatrix
Beatrix is a neighborhood restaurant, coffeehouse and meeting place located in Chicago’s River North. Our chef partners Susan Weaver, Rita Dever and John Chiakulas have created a menu inspired by food made in Lettuce’s test kitchen.

Beatrix is open daily for breakfast, lunch, dinner and late night offerings.

All pastries, breads and sweets are baked in house daily. Some of our favorites include Seeded Rye English Muffins, Honey Butter Cinnamon Buns and Thin & Crispy Chocolate Chip Cookies. Our coffee and tea program will showcase two iconic Chicago roasters, Intelligensia and Metropolis.

Diner Reviews
  • "The food is amazing and lots of healthy choices, different twist on appetizers, and entrees. The deserts are excellent just a great place for dates business lunch and dinners. I have experienced Brunch, lunch and dinner, each experience was better than the last. Go with friends and share multiple entrees, Great American wines, and great fresh juices that can be turned into fun drinks."

  • "Really loud loft space, lacking wine list, food just so-so."

  • "Ok, we skipped the pastries, so I should have made this a 4. In total, the food was just average for all the entrees, and definitely a step below some of the other peers in the area. Prices are good, and I'd love to dine here if I was staying at the aloft."

  • "We went for breakfast...an event we rarely do. Guests from out of town wanted breakfast. We went for hotel proximity. We waited 30' for a the buffet plate (no prep required), the oatmeal (no prep required), the salad (no prep required), the omelet (minimal prep required)....& never saw the waiter again to get a coffee refill until he presented the bill. The cooks were not idle, as I saw dish after dish leaving the open kitchen but no one around US was eating...it must have all gone outside. The chicken salad could have used more chicken & less arugula, the oatmeal would have been nicer hotter with more accoutrements than a few paltry dried cherries & a few grains of brown sugar & milk. & THAT'S WHY I DON'T GO OUT FOR BREAKFAST."

  • "We loved Beatrix! We went early with our 16 month old and they were very accommodating. The food was delicious and they had the walls down so you had the outdoor feel while still inside. I'd definitely go again."

  • "We went for a light dinner before attending a lecture, and it was perfect. The dishes are very creative and delicious. The chocolate chip cookies for dessert were perfect - chewy and tasty! Look forward to trying more entrees. Enthusiastically recommend."

  • "Beatrix Is one of our favorite places to eat out. The menu has a healthy bend and everything I've ever had there was delicious. It's especially amazing for brunch. The steak and eggs, egg white sandwich and chilaquiles bar are all delicious. Definitely try this place."

  • "We ate at Beatrix for lunch upon recommendation from OpenTable. We were not disappointed. There were unique offerings on the lunch menu. The service was outstanding. Even my 12 year old grandson was pleased. The five of us were heading to the Wendella Boat tour and Beatrix was within easy walking distance of the boat."

  • "With the closing of Scoozi we've been looking for a new place to go for a relaxed, casual, spur-of-the-moment meal in the River North area with a gluten free menu. Actually, there are several choices, but this one rises to the top of the list when considering food, service and ambiance. It's a little bit quirky - intentionally so - but the simplicity of the menu and the unusual offerings transforms quirky into both inviting and interesting. We recommend the juices..."

  • "The space was beautiful, the food was good, but the waiter was pretty poor. The service was so bad that I can't imagine recommending this restaurant. I asked repeatedly about dairy in the various dishes. In all fairness I didn't say I have a dairy allergy - but usually the servers clue in when I ask repeated questions about the ingredients. He then served me by main covered in cheese. When we explained that I couldn't eat the dish as is - he got very defensive and instead of apologizing asked if it was really necessary to remake the dish. It may be a better place for a drink than a meal."

  • "Took my parents here for brunch when they were in town because it's one of the few places that actually takes a reservation at brunch time. They even were able to change our reservation at the last minute when we were running late. It was a little loud inside but not terrible, and the food/service more than made up for it. The different flavored mimosas were great, and the lemon ricotta pancakes are to die for!"

  • "We really enjoyed our food. The restaurant is rather casual and noisy."

  • "The lemon pancakes were out of this world and the deep dish baked french toast was divine. The savory options were okay, but nothing to write home about though. The juices were also fresh and delicious."

  • "Met a friend for dinner. First time at Beatrix. Nice atmosphere and decor. The menu is a simple, updated American comfort food menu. Appealing. However, the waiter was annoying. He imposed his personality onto our conversation, believing he was more clever than he was. I am not looking for 'entertainment' from my waiter. Otherwise, it was fine. Not sure if I would go back, though. Nothing unique about the food or experience. Tasty enough and tasteful, but not distinctive."

  • "The food was all prepared very well, but lacked any interesting flavor."

  • "We were enjoying a small celebration. The food was excellent, with interesting choices. There were four of us and we all were happy with our meals, all the way from our salad and appetizer through our shared desserts. Conversation was somewhat difficult, however, due to the noise level. I would certainly not go here for a romantic dinner!"

  • "I love the simplicity of the food at Beatrix and the healthy preparation. Then, after you've felt good about your health-conscious choice entree, you can enjoy one of the fabulous desserts. Note: The caramel pie is beyond wonderful and I don't even love caramel. Same for the bakery cookies. Get a couple for the table to share. And then walk home. A perfect evening and 80% healthy, too."

  • "I think Beatrix is one of my new fav restos! Great food and service. The inside is architecturally nice as well. The only negative is that you cannot hear the person (or persons) you are talking to at your table. It's very loud and it would've been nice had they addressed that when putting the resto together."

  • "After our first visit I was super impressed. Since I have limited dietary restrictions and try to eat very clean this place is perfect! I had the arugula salad and tried some of the pea soup. Both full of flavor and I wanted to lick my plate. For dinner I ordered their special...the crab cake. It wasn't full of breading like most restaurants do. There was tons of fresh crab meat and the sauce that accompanied it was delish! I will definitely be back to try out their other dishes and am already making a reservation this weekend for brunch. Awesome find."

  • "This was my first dining experience at Beatrix. I meet a friend for dinner -- great location and service! My friend thoroughly enjoyed her halibut and wine. As a vegan I had very limited choices. The server offered several options-- he was great but it would have been nice to have more options Many places now offer an alternative menu. Just a suggestion!"

  • "Food is good, fun trendy place But not very impressive wines on the list We tasted 4 and opted for no wine with dinner The Viognier at the bar was good if you like a buttery taste"

  • "We were visiting Chicago for the weekend and went to Beatrix based on their reviews and I agree with the good reviews. The food was very tasty. I had the chimichurri steak and my husband had the pot roast. They were able to make us a side dish of asparagus which wasn't on the menu because our 4 year old needed some veggies which was great. We also had two of their juices which were quite good."

  • "Tried Beatrix for dinner this weekend with a business colleague, and we very much enjoyed our meal. Service was on-point and prompt without being suffocating. The food was simple and delicious, and for a very reasonable price. The kale salad was great, as was the skirt steak and the chocolate dessert. Will definitely be returning!"

  • "The staff is so friendly and quick to serve. I don't think I ever had an empty glass until we left. Atmosphere is very trendy but comfortable with couch seating at many tables. On nice temperature days, they even open up the front windows/walls to create a beautiful open air atmosphere. And the food is simply delightful. My wife and I went to dinner. I had the pork shank and my wife had the salmon. We were both stunned by the flavors. The chef knows what she's doing! We liked it so much we brought our friends back for brunch the very next morning. Fresh fruit juices/cocktails and coffee options were amazing. The lemon pancakes were quite light and refreshing while the praline French toast was sweet and savory. Definitely going back!"

  • "My mom was in town and we wanted to try something new and fun. Our server was very helpful and we tried the corn quest dip. I had the pork shank, which is huge and very filling. The sauce was delicious. My mom had the crab cake and we complemented the meal with a very reasonably priced malbec. Good ambience and services. Would definitely go back!"

  • "I made a dinner reservation here for a special occasion after reading all of the positive reviews. The menu looked creative, so I was excited for the food. Upon arriving, I found the service to be surprisingly sub-par and unwelcoming. The food was lackluster and simply mediocre, and not worth the prices you'll pay here. Everyone in my party was disappointed in the quality in the food. While Beatrix has great ambiance and decor, and a nice bar/lounging area, if you want high quality food and service (and especially food deserving of the prices), I would recommend going elsewhere. There are many, many excellent restaurants in Chicago and Beatrix is not in the crowd."

  • "Beatrix is located just off the lobby of the Aloft Chicago City Center hotel...which initially seems kind of odd, but it works. There are comfy couches, as well as, tables. The atmosphere is fun and laid back. Chicago is known for their brunch and Beatrix doesn't disappoint!"

  • "The ratings above to do not reflect my expereince at Beatrix as I did not dine here. Open Table would not allow me to post my comments unless I made a rating. My friend and I arrived at Beatrix to find that a radio station was holding an event in the bar area wshich is not separate from the dining area. The music was so loud we could barely hear the hostess. We cancelled our reservation and went elsewhere."

  • "Love that they open at 8 for brunch. Server was friendly and made a great recommendation. Nice atmosphere--trendy but not pretentious. Casual. The juices are really fresh and delicious. Chicken tinga, lemon pancakes and bacon were standouts."
