A word from Beast
BEAST offers a six-course prix-fixe dinner five nights a week. The menu changes Wednesday and remains the same for the rest of the week based upon the ingredients of the season. A four-course prix-fixe brunch is offered every Sunday.

Wine pairings are available for dinner and brunch. As our menu changes weekly, so do they.

Because of our small kitchen and a set menu, we don't have the staff and resources to tailor each course to individual dining restrictions. We are able to make an exception for allergies if given advance notice.

A credit card is required to secure all reservations. We have a 24-hour cancellation policy for parties up to five people and a 48-hour cancellation policy for parties of six or more. Any cancellations within the aforementioned timeframes will result in a $75 charge per person.

Diner Reviews
  • "The food was good but I'm not sure of the value from what you get. Good place to go with friends who want a different experience and are not on a budget"

  • "Naomi Pomeroy and her team are simply brilliant. We had an extraordinary weeknight meal for a party of 13 which was flawless. And Expatriate, just across the street, is a great and sexy post-dinner digestif hangout. Thank you Kyle for making space for our after-party!"

  • "The food was outstanding, communal seating creates a friendly atmosphere, and watching the staff prepare the food was great fun! I have only two minor complaints: the chairs are uncomfortable, and every course was extremely rich food, which was a bit much. But it was a wonderful experience!"

  • "Since the ambiance is rather cozy with sharing of the table, it is definitely not for everyone, but great if you usually spend about 2- 3 hours for dinner. Service tends to be relaxing to slow, so expect to get really full by the time you reach the third dish. Food, on the other hand, is on a high level, and I think it is one of the better places Portland has to offer. It does lack a surprise element for me, and all the dishes are explained in detail to a point that leaves no room for judgement. As a die-hard fanatic of food, and I can safely say that this restaurant offers good food, and satisfies my personal expectation point but no further. Lower your expectation before you go and you'll be in for a good surprise."

  • "So much about my dinner was memorable, but the first course knocked my socks off. Spring asparagus veloute, levain bread and Oregon walnut pistou, and herbed creme fraiche mousse. I could have eaten an entire bowl of the pistou alone, but that wouldn't leave room for the mousse and veloute. An amazing blend of tastes and unami. One of the best things I have ever tasted."

  • "Hands down the best restaurant in Portland, and maybe all of the Pacific Northwest. The feeling of eating a multi-course meal in an environment akin to a home dinner party is great. The food is amazingly good and while flavors are complex, the concepts are simple and amenable for all palates."

  • "Excellent staff, attentive but not hovering. Brunch was excellent and the wine pairings with each course were expertly done. Staff was accommodating and flexible when our party went from four to two. I normally hate communal seating, but those next to us were pleasant to be around. Strong, intelligent, beautiful women in the kitchen! I loved being able to watch the food prepared and plated for us - fun for foodies!"

  • "We went to celebrate a graduation/new job it was amazing. We did the wine pairing, which was an extra touch for every course. Worth every penny!"

  • "Food and service are impeccable, and the chef makes a point of chatting with each guest. Be aware that you will be sitting at a communal table, so bring your a-game conversation skills to have the best experience. Rubbing elbows with your fellow diners is part of the fun, so if you want an intimate quiet setting, this isn't the spot."

  • "The Beast is a wonderful setting for a special occasion. Seating is limited so you don't get the hustle and bustle or places like the Portland Grill. In true French style, there aren't substitutions in a meal, which truly is divine. My wife and I met a group of wonderful people, with great conversation that added to the intimate ambiance. The Beast is now my place of choice when considering a special place to relax, look into each other's eyes, and feast."

  • "Went for the 4-course brunch and had the optional wine pairing with each course. Was a superb meal all the way through, very filling, and awesome to watch the staff put the plates together. Was a great experience and would definitely go back for dinner."

  • "One of the best food dining experiences in Portland...and that's hard to say in a town like Portland. I've been there a few times and can't wait to go back again."

  • "We went to Beast on Valentine's Day to celebrate a notable birthday and the day itself. Not realizing the seating is family style, we were surprised to find ourselves closely surrounded by fellow diners. This added an unexpected amount of interaction with other guests that ended up adding to the evening. The food and wine pairings were as unique and delicious as expected from the recommendations, research, and reviews. If the Oregon Tourism Director recommends a restaurant it has to be good, right?"

  • "Our first brunch at Beast was less than we expected. One waitperson in particular was very haughty and no one was particularly welcoming. The menu wasn't well thought out in that the first course was too sweet and the dessert was better suited for a dinner. In fact my generally iron stomach wasn't very happy although I ate less than half of the dessert. While you don't expect big portions for a multi-course meal, perhaps they could have served a whole piece of bacon and of toast, rather than 1.2 of each. I won't be back."

  • "Prepare yourself to experience unexpected combinations of ingredients and flavors that you'll simply swoon over. The restaurant provides a wonderfully intimate atmosphere making it feel like you're a special guest at a dinner party. You'll meet other diners at the communal tables which just makes the evening all the more memorable."

  • "Once a month on a Tuesday, they serve a 6 course dinner with a mandatory wine pairing. This dinner is more expensive than the regular menus. I personally appreciate the regular menus more, but my companion liked this one better. To each their own"

  • "One of the best restaurants I have ever been to. Everything was top notch. I have been to many restaurants with tasting menus and this one was by far the best and affordable for that matter. You will not be disappointed with this "little" gem. Each plate was delicious and beautiful. To bad I live in New York. Just to pre-warn anyone who is shy and or doesn't do well with strangers, this restaurant uses only communal tables, so unless you book your reservation with a large group, you will have to converse with strangers. It worked out for us because we sat with some nice couples around the same age, some of them from New York. Overall, a great experience."

  • "Excellent food and service. However, plates were over produced. Too many items on charcouterie plate and main course. I would have preferred simpler cleaner dishes with fewer flavors. We chose the wine flight with each course (6) and the pours were minimal. The meal was 3 1/2 hours from start to finish and it would have been much better if it had been 2 hours!"

  • "My wife and I recently had an outstanding Valentine's dinner at Beast. The meal was 5 courses with wine pairings. All the courses were creative and perfectly prepared; the wine pairings were spot on, too! This restaurant is an excellent choice for foodies or anyone comfortable with a dining experience where you are served set menus. The seating is all communal so it wouldn't be everyone's choice for a romantic dinner but it worked out great for us. This restaurant celebrates good food and the customers can get celebratory, too, so it can be a little noisy - but not offputting unless you prefer to eat your meals in a hushed environment. We will certainly be back again!"

  • "Have been here several times but this was our first brunch. the four course meal was great and I am always impressed by the wine pairings. Beast is simply the beast restaurant in Portland."

  • "While visiting my daughter in Portland (from the LA area), we went to a brunch at Beast, and it was fabulous! Four delicious and imaginative courses were served, each with a wine pairing (optional; they also have beer pairings and single-order beer and wine). Diners sit at long wooden tables, and can watch some of the food preparation taking place in front of them. When we were there, there were only a few parties, due to a snow/ice storm; I imagine when the room is full, the ambience would be a little more lively."

  • "Like many Portland foodies, I have been lusting after a night at Beast for years. Anytime a friend went I made them recount the whole meal course by course. For my 10th anniversary last week, I finally got my chance. I was not disappointed! Veloute with a lightness that brought fresh dill and bright salmon roe to pop to the surface of the rich potato leek base. A main course of lamb and winter greens was a perfect exercise in the elegance of simple, true to the ingredient preparation. The highlight though, for me was the charcuterie plate. The luscious liver mousse and composed flavors of the country pate even made a liver lover of my husband. Beast lives up to the hype with every bite that comes out of it's bafflingly calm kitchen."

  • "145 per person is too expensive. The wines used we're food friendly but also value wines and the pours were way too tight. No joy coming out of the kitchen and this tension lingered into the dining room. At the end of the day we felt fleased!!"

  • "Make sure you don't eat all day before you go-- you'll want to have room for so much amazing food!! Get there a little early and they let you choose your spot at the table. Only expensive beer and wine- my only complaint."

  • "Beast has moved into my top 3 favorite restaurants. I don't feel like Beast is for everyone, but if you are a foodie you should defiantly give it try. It might seem expensive to some, but I believe you get what you pay for. Beast has a good thing going on and I will be dining again for sure."

  • "The food was exquisitly flavourful to the point where it distracted me from the lovely wine pairings! If I had to come up with a criticism it would be that the chairs are quite uncomfortable."

  • "We had talked about going to Beast ever since we moved to Portland and we finally went. The service was excellent and the staff was very knowledgeable about the menu and wine. Watching the plates being prepared was enjoyable as we could see the precision and timing that goes into each course. I would highly recommend Beast especially for anyone who wants a unique dinning experience. I regret not eating here before now."

  • "Food prep / presentation was fabulous. Family dining tables may not be for the one looking for a romantic, private evening but we enjoyed the table of "new friends". Wine list could use some Cab selections from Sonoma, Napa, Alexander Valley or eastern Washington besides the current list of two Pinot's from Oregon and a few French Bordeaux's that few would recongnize."

  • "As always a wonderful dinning experience. Oh and the duck was amazing!!!!!"

  • "The food here is so good, and the staff so knowledgable, that it would be impossible not to have a wonderful experience. Unlike most places where tables are communal, you are not elbow to rib age with your neighbours, and the tables are also much wider. Th noise level is low enough so that you can converse in normal tones, but sufficient that you don't hear everyone's conversations. Overall, one of the best experiences we have ever had."

  • "Cannot find ANY criticism on the food or service. Absolutely fantastic. Noise level is tough especially if you at in a large group. Eat here before you die!"

  • "Took our two sons here as a belated 2012 Christmas gift as they both enjoy good food and good experiences. Had both here. They offer a high end, multi-course varied selection of foods, but it is not a "select from the menu" type of place. The menu is pre-determined for each meal, so what they offer is what you get. But it is good, and it is a chance to try some things you may not otherwise find yourself selecting off a menu."

  • "Not cheap but they do a fantastic job of making you feel like a special guest, giving you interesting complex foods that are delicious. It's a fun dining experience and one of the best meals I've had in a long time. Just be willing to accept that you'll be there for a while to enjoy everything."

  • "I've dined on Naomi's food for over 10 years; always loved it; and, after that time, she has the family style down pat. The family style service is great with minimal staff. The trouble with the dining experience is that (a) there is too much food for the set menu and (b) the food choices are always from cheaper selections of food that, in my judgment, require Naomi to hide that fact with too much clutter on the plates. The wine choices follow the same pattern. The "paired wines" are all wines that are of the same type as the food, cheap and are never of the type that allow the diner to really savor the wine itself. It works for her but for my palate, a once a year visit would satisfy my culinary yens."

  • "What a very cool little restaurant and definitely an experience to remember. The food was great although it was outside of my normal food-comfort zone. I still tried it all and am very glad I did for the experience of it. The restaurant itself is small and that gives the diners a very private connected feeling with the entire experience. I would very much recommend others to give Beast a try."

  • "Given the hype around Beast, we had high expectations. Liked the cozy ambiance and the prix fixe menu approach. Staff was friendly and attentive. But, as to the food, we were underwhelmed. Nothing bad, but also nothing that would really entice us back (in honesty, I'm already having trouble remembering the menu, 5 days out). And, there were a couple of small things that seemed little off -- like duck froie gras served on a peanut butter cookie, ouch! I love to try creative new flavor combinations -- this one just didn't work. We were also disappointed that the wine pairings provided for the tasting menu often seemed a poor match for the food. Sadness, given our anticipation. For the money, I'll go somewhere else next time."

  • "Our second time for Sunday brunch at Beast in NE Portland in two months and it was delicious with attentive service again. My only wish is that they had changed the menu a little more since the last time, but I am guessing that the prix fix four course Sunday brunch menu may change seasonally. We took my daughter and her boyfriend this time, and he has cooked professionally in catering. They both loved it. Highly recommend the wine pairings and beer pairings with brunch too."
