A word from Bearnaise
Béarnaise transports the flavors of Paris to Capitol Hill. Located at 3rd and Pennsylvania Ave. Southeast, Béarnaise serves bistro fare in a humble, but chic, atmosphere describes as "A French Revelation" by The Washington Post.

Inspired by their childhood memories in Montreal and years of training and living around France Chef Spike Mendelsohn and his sister, Micheline Mendelsohn Luhn, opened the bistro to rave reviews.

In the lively dining room, guests dine on classic French dishes with a twist in comfty leather booths surrounded by antique mirrors and vibrant original artwork from Parisian galleries. Pair your meal with a bottle of wine and indulge in decadent desserts to make any meal feel like an escape to France.

We had a coupon that made our lunch an especially good deal. On a lovely (i.e., not hot and not humid) late summer day we chose to eat at one of the outdoor tables. Since vehicular traffic is not too heavy in that particular block, it was pleasant to sit out and watch the Capitol Hill folks walk by and enjoy our delicious 3-course lunch. Waiter was very good. Can't speak to what noise level might be indoors since we ate outside.

I was in from out of town and wanted to try Top Chef's spike Mendelson's latest place. I was not disappointed. I had the Steak Friettes. It was cooked perfectly. The prices were surprisingly reasonable for DC. I sat at the bar and got fabulous service. If you're in DC you should give this place a try

We loved our pre-Shakespeare dinner at Bernaise. The food was delicious! The corner table for the five of us was great for conversation and sharing food. The pigs feet was a yummy surprise and the duck confit was wonderful. We are looking forward to visiting again during the Shakespeare season.

We were very impressed. Before a show at the Folger we were looking for a quality kitchen within walking distance. Having eaten at another French Restaurant only two weeks before on 14th Street, we ordered the same food to compare. Bernaise won hands down! Also, the service, often criticized in the reviews, couldn't have been better. The place is not fancy, but the price is right and the food was good. The wine list is sparse but well selected. We'll return.

It was a nice lunch, service was very slow, orders took a while to be taken and then arrive. Server did not come around and check on us often. Perhaps it was because we erect seated upstairs? Usually they are very quick. Based on previous experiences I would go back, but if this was my only visit I wouldn't.

I actually found this restaurant through a TravelZoo promotion. So we got 2 entrees, bottomless mimosas, and a bread basket(which was delicious) for the table. The food was really great! However, I felt like our service was slightly different because we had the coupon (i.e., getting refills on our "bottomless mimosas" felt like pulling teeth). In the end, it still didn't take away from our dining experience too much. Great food! Great atmosphere!

  • By Far the Best Restaurant in DC

Bearnaise is the single best restaurant in DC. You can get their amazing cheese board, two glasses of wine, two delicious soups, two of the best steaks you'll ever have with perfect fries, two spectacular desserts, and two lattes all for less than $120 plus tip. At this quality, half of that food is worth that much. Bearnaise is the restaurant I use to compare every other restaurant to see how it matches up, half a bearnaise, three-quarters of a bearnaise, etc. I know I might sound like I work there, I don't, but I do one day hope to have enough money to buy this restaurant so I can eat there every night.

bistro-esque place with really good food. simple and good wine list at $10 glass for almost everything. menu is mostly steaks and moules, but a pear and potato soup app was special. french fries were a little soggy but taste was good. I love bone marrow and they did a super job of seasoning with absolutely perfect crusty bread full of holes for the marrow to seep into. missed the brussel sprouts which I've heard are good-though any veg with aioli is bound to be a favorite! atmosphere is pretty high energy. lots of younger rather than older clients. the wait staff was helpful, friendly and VERY professional.

We went for Saturday brunch. I had a burger and bottomless mimosas, my boyfriend had steak and eggs and bottomless bloodies, and we shared a bread basket. The food was absolutely delicious. Our waiter was great, though he forgot the bread basket until we reminded him a second time. The restaurant is beautiful, it's a nice mix of DC and French.

We come to Bearnaise about once a month and two of the waiters know us by sight -- that was the only thing that saved an otherwise poorly serviced dinner. It was sometimes difficult to get our assigned waiter's attention and he was very soft-spoken. Luckily first one then another waiter who recognized us went out of their way to help us with water, bread, and delivering our dessert to us. Things that our assigned waiter neglected to do even though we were the only people in the section. Food was very good as always.

Overall the food was good. The french fries were the best. The service was good just seem like the waiter had too many tables to do all at once, and bust boy was able to get things quicker than the waiter. The only problem was that we were seating by the trash area which really smell, and all the tables outside were taken that we could not move.

I live on the hill and enjoy the mix of restaurants available for families. This is my second time at Bernaise and I was so unimpressed by the service. Our waiter paid ZERO attention to us. We had to ask for everything and he did not check in on us for long amounts of time. We even had to ask for refills on the water and drinks. We really felt like checking in on us was a nuisance for him, when the restaurant was only moderately busy. It took us about a half hour just to settle up the check. The nicest person on staff was the bus person, so I'll have to give credit where it's due. We enjoy the food...a good plate of steak frites for the money. But, the service will stop us from coming back.

Excellent cuisine, coupled with a relaxing, friendly atmosphere and great service, make this our favorite spot for brunch. When the weather is nice and you are lucky enough to get a seat outside (or have time to wait for one), life doesn't get much better than brunch at Bearnaise. Outdoor seating is on a fairly busy sidewalk on Capitol Hill, so it's great for people-watching, but if you don't like eating on the sidewalk while strangers walk by, you can always eat indoors. Excellent bloody mary's!! The creme brulee French toast is superb, as is everything we've tried on the menu.

I purchased a voucher from LivingSocial for brunch for two and it was marvelous! I took my BFF who is a frequent diner there, but had never done their brunch. The mimosas were terrific and the hollandaise sauce was the best she and I had ever had. Perfectly poached eggs, too. The only downside was the noise level. It was very high. However, I would not let this stop me from going back for brunch again! It was a delightful time with excellent food and service.

I love Bearnaise - the first time I went I was absolutely blown away by the service. However this last time I was really disappointed. Not only did we wait for 10-15 minutes for our drinks to arrive, our server was so disinterested in us he would walk away before I could ask for anything. He was slow, not particularly friendly, and all and all just didn't seem like he wanted to be there. It was really disappointing for such a yummy restaurant!

We had a 9:15pm reservation on Saturday however we decided to go much earlier and see if they had room. The host was nice and was able to move our reservation to 6:30 which was significantly early but the place was empty. Online it showed tables were all booked however even when we left before 8pm they were maybe 75% full. The French Onion soup (even in August) was well worth it. Couldn't have tasted better, stock was perfect and the flavor was just right. I had the Mussels and my finance had the Steak Frits.. Nice to know the Mussles came with re-fills on the fries.. Overall a great dinner..

I went to Bearnaise with my friend during restaurant week- we started with a delicious baby greens salad, then had mussels in a sauce that was so good I wanted to take a bath in it. I seriously could have just had a piping hot mug of sauce and been happy as a queen. The french fries served with them were also delectable. Finally, we can a pastry sliced in half with homemade vanilla ice cream and --- get this--- homemade chocolate sauce. This sauce wasn't too sweet was was chocolaty enough to taste like sweet sin. Believe me, I will be back.

The food might be good, but who cares. We have waited for over an hour here and still no food. This is completely ridiculous. Same for like literally everyone here. How difficult is it to make a French toast and a steak? When we arrived every waiter ignored us. No water, no drinks, nobody cared to take our order. Finally a waiter came by, clearly bothered by the presence of any guest. This is one of the worst service experience we have ever had. Period. Anywhere in the world. Spike - this is an embarrassment for you. I wish I could give 0 stars.

I arrived after my husband, and we moved from one table to another (patio was empty.) Waiter Alex barely hid his frustration (though nothing but a glass of water had been brought to the table.) We used a voucher, and since we had already ordered Montreal Caesars, we asked to sub the Caesars for the mimosas...they are exactly the same price on the menu. Flat out "no", and when I asked if I could see a manager, we got rolling eyes and heavy sighs out of Alex. The manager did damage control nicely, and we loved the food and our new waiter. And we noticed that after that, Alex's demeanor became a whole lot friendlier to the other diners who were on the patio by that time. We will be back for the food.

This was a first trip to Bearnaise for me. We were there during Washington's restaurant week, but chose not to do the special. The restaurant feels like a bistro should feel -- tables close enough, but not too close, and noise-level somewhere between moderate and energetic. The Vietnamese mussels were outrageously good, and all of us ordered steak and frittes, which comes with choices of sauces. My wine reduction sauce was fine, but really nothing too special. Fries were great! OK selection of wines by the glass. Service was excellent. One of our party was 45 minutes late, staff didn't seem to get annoyed and we never felt rushed. Fun area and the pizza place and diner next door were hopping. I'll definitely go back.

Great location, plenty of space, good sidewalk seating, & beautiful. Good range of menu options & the wine list. Staff could use a smile - it seemed to pain them to be friendly. We had to ask for everything. 2 people at a time carry only 2 plates each - why they don't have staff carry more, or give them trays so they won't have to make 6 trips is beyond me. Food is hit or miss - the cucumber gazpacho & profiteroles are delicious. Crème Brule is boring - chocolate chips strewn on top. Chicken paillard w/Dijon sauce & frites is 2 breasts pounded out & grilled with dark grill lines with a greenish oil over it - is overcooked & dry, oily, needed salt. Sauce is bland, tastes nothing like mustard, & I would classify as more of a hollandaise.

I thought the poor service was due to the TZ deal, but having read through these reviews I am seeing that it may be the plight of Bearnaise itself. Our server barely said 10 words to us for the 90 minutes we were there. He was rude and never once asked us if we wanted refills on our drinks or if we were doing ok with the food. We were given no service. Every single thing that was brought to our table was asked for by us specifically. He even walked by at one point after bringing the check he took our mimosa glasses without saying a word. Eventually another waiter came by and asked if we wanted more and indeed brought us more drinks. This place is a huge waste of time and money. We couldn't be paid to go back.

This was our first visit to Bearnaise. We arrived on time for our 10:30AM brunch reservation. We were seated promptly and given very prompt attention from our waitor, Marcello. We used a certificate from TravelZoo which included a bread basket, entree and endless mimosas or bloody marys. The bread basket was very good; our favorite was the coconut topped coffee cake. We ordered mimosas all around and they kept coming as advertised. They seemed to be a bit heavy on the orange or grapefruit juice and light on the the sparkling wine, but they tasted good. Our brunch entrees arrived shortly after the bread basket emptied, perfectly timed really. I ordered the croque madame with frites and my wife had the steak and egg with frites. It was good.

This was my fourth time at the restaurant and each succeeding time has been a little less impressive. I'll be taking a break for a while, at least. The food didn't have a lot of taste, the steak I had was wrongly prepared to order and not much better when re-done. The cocktail which promised to contain a number of different ingredients tasted pretty much like whiskey on the rocks. I love the atmosphere and the waiters and want to like this place more.
